23 By this time David was an old, old man, so he stepped down from the throne and appointed his son Solomon as the new king of Israel. He summoned all the political and religious leaders of Israel for the coronation ceremony. At this time a census was taken of the men of the tribe of Levi who were thirty years or older. 23 When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon(A) king over Israel.(B)

He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. The Levites thirty years old or more(C) were counted,(D) and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand.(E)
