Israel’s Family

The sons of Israel [C another name for Jacob] were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Judah’s Family

Judah’s sons were Er, Onan, and Shelah. A Canaanite woman, ·the daughter of Shua [or Bath-shua], was their mother. Judah’s ·first son [firstborn], Er, did ·what the Lord said was wicked [L evil in the Lord’s sight/eyes], so the Lord ·put him to death [killed him]. Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah, giving Judah five sons in all [Gen. 38].

Perez’s sons were Hezron and Hamul.

Zerah had five sons: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and ·Darda [or Dara; 1 Kin. 4:31].

Carmi’s son was ·Achan [or Achar; C “disaster”; Josh. 7:1], ·who caused trouble for [the troubler of] Israel because he ·took [stole] ·things [plunder] that had been ·given to the Lord to be destroyed [set apart/devoted to the Lord; Josh. 7:16–26].

Ethan’s son was Azariah.

Hezron’s sons were Jerahmeel, Ram, and ·Caleb [Chelubai; v. 18].

10 Ram was Amminadab’s father, and Amminadab was Nahshon’s father. Nahshon was the leader of the ·people [L sons] of Judah. 11 Nahshon was the father of ·Salmon [or Salma; Ruth 4:21], who was the father of Boaz. 12 Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.

13 Jesse’s ·first son [firstborn] was Eliab. His second son was Abinadab, his third was Shimea, 14 his fourth was Nethanel, his fifth was Raddai, 15 his sixth was Ozem, and his seventh son was David. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons were ·Abishai [or Abshai; 2 Sam. 2:18], Joab, and Asahel. 17 Abigail ·was the mother of [L gave birth to] Amasa, and his father was Jether, an Ishmaelite.

Caleb’s Family

18 Caleb son of Hezron ·had [fathered] children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth [C possibly two names for the same woman]. Caleb and Azubah’s sons were Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. They ·had [L gave birth to] a son named Hur, 20 who was the father of Uri, who was the father of Bezalel.

21 Later, when Hezron was sixty years old, he married the daughter of Makir, Gilead’s father. Hezron ·had sexual relations with [L went in to] Makir’s daughter, and she ·had [L gave birth to] a son named Segub. 22 Segub was the father of Jair. Jair ·controlled [held; owned; ruled] twenty-three cities in the ·country [land; territory] of Gilead. 23 (But Geshur and Aram ·captured [took] the Towns of Jair, as well as Kenath and the ·small towns [villages] around it—sixty towns in all.) All these were descendants of Makir, the father of Gilead.

24 After Hezron died ·in Caleb Ephrathah, his wife Abijah [or Caleb had sexual relations with Ephrath, his father Hezron’s wife, and she] ·had [L gave birth to] his son, named Ashhur. Ashhur became the father of Tekoa.

Jerahmeel’s Family

25 Hezron’s ·first son [firstborn] was Jerahmeel. Jerahmeel’s sons were Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. Ram was Jerahmeel’s ·first son [firstborn]. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, named Atarah. She was the mother of Onam.

27 Jerahmeel’s ·first son [firstborn], Ram, had sons. They were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.

28 Onam’s sons were Shammai and Jada.

Shammai’s sons were Nadab and Abishur.

29 Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, and ·their sons were [L she gave birth to] Ahban and Molid.

30 Nadab’s sons were Seled and Appaim. Seled died without having children.

31 Appaim’s son was Ishi, who became the father of Sheshan.

Sheshan was the father of Ahlai.

32 Jada was Shammai’s brother, and Jada’s sons were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without having children.

33 Jonathan’s sons were Peleth and Zaza.

These were Jerahmeel’s descendants.

34 Sheshan did not have any sons, only daughters. He had a ·servant [slave] from Egypt named Jarha. 35 Sheshan let his daughter marry his ·servant [slave] Jarha, and she ·had [L gave birth to] a son named Attai.

36 Attai was the father of Nathan. Nathan was the father of Zabad. 37 Zabad was the father of Ephlal. Ephlal was the father of Obed. 38 Obed was the father of Jehu. Jehu was the father of Azariah. 39 Azariah was the father of Helez. Helez was the father of Eleasah. 40 Eleasah was the father of Sismai. Sismai was the father of Shallum. 41 Shallum was the father of Jekamiah, and Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.

Caleb’s Family

42 Caleb was Jerahmeel’s brother. Caleb’s ·first son [firstborn] was Mesha. Mesha was the father of Ziph, and his son Mareshah was the father of Hebron.

43 Hebron’s sons were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44 Shema was the father of Raham, who was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai. 45 Shammai was the father of Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth Zur. 46 Caleb’s ·slave woman [concubine; C a secondary wife] was named Ephah, and she ·was the mother of [L gave birth to] Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.

47 Jahdai’s sons were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.

48 Caleb had another ·slave woman [concubine; C a secondary wife] named Maacah. She ·was the mother of [L gave birth to] Sheber, Tirhanah, 49 Shaaph, and Sheva. Shaaph was the father of Madmannah. Sheva was the father of Macbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.

These were Caleb’s descendants: Caleb’s son Hur was the ·first son [firstborn] of his mother Ephrathah [C called Ephrath in v. 19]. Hur’s sons were Shobal, Salma, and Hareph. Shobal was the father of Kiriath Jearim. Salma was the father of Bethlehem. And Hareph was the father of Beth Gader.

52 Shobal was the father of Kiriath Jearim. Shobal’s descendants were Haroeh, half the Manahathites, 53 and the ·family groups [clans] of Kiriath Jearim: the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. The Zorathites and the Eshtaolites ·came [descended; L went forth] from the Mishraite people.

54 Salma’s descendants were Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, half the Manahathites, and the Zorites. 55 His descendants included the families who lived at Jabez, who ·wrote and copied important papers [were scribes]. They were called the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites and were from the Kenite ·family group [clan] who came from Hammath. He was the father of the ·people living in [L house of] Recab.

These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah; the three were born to him by Shua’s daughter the Canaanitess. Er, Judah’s eldest, was evil in the Lord’s sight, and He put him to death. Tamar, Judah’s daughter-in-law, bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah’s sons were five in all.(A)

The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara—five in all.(B) The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who violated the ban [by taking things from Jericho that had been banned].(C) The son of Ethan: Azariah.

Genealogy of David

The sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai [that is, [a]Caleb]. 10 Ram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, leader of the sons of Judah. 11 Nahshon became the father of Salma, Salma became the father of Boaz, 12 Boaz became the father of Obed, and Obed became the father of Jesse. 13 Jesse became the father of Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, 14 Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, 15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three. 17 Abigail gave birth to Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.

18 And Caleb the son of Hezron had sons by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth. Azubah’s sons were: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19 Azubah died, and Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20 Hur became the father of Uri, and Uri became the father of Bezalel [the skillful craftsman who made the furnishings of the tabernacle].(D)

21 Later, when Hezron was sixty years old, he married the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, and she bore him Segub. 22 Segub became the father of Jair, who [later] had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. 23 But Geshur and Aram took from them Havvoth-jair, with Kenath and its villages, sixty towns in all. All these were the sons (descendants) of Machir, the father of Gilead. 24 After Hezron died in Caleb-ephrathah, Abijah, Hezron’s wife, bore him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.

25 The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron: Ram the firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, named Atarah; she was the mother of Onam. 27 The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were: Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28 The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur. 29 The name of Abishur’s wife was Abihail; she bore him Ahban and Molid. 30 The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died childless. 31 The son of Appaim: Ishi. The son of Ishi: Sheshan. The son of Sheshan: Ahlai. 32 The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. But Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha. 35 So Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant as a wife; she bore him Attai. 36 Attai became the father of Nathan, and Nathan became the father of Zabad. 37 Zabad became the father of Ephlal, and Ephlal became the father of Obed. 38 Obed became the father of Jehu, and Jehu became the father of Azariah. 39 Azariah became the father of Helez, and Helez became the father of Eleasah. 40 Eleasah became the father of Sismai, and Sismai became the father of Shallum. 41 Shallum became the father of Jekamiah, and Jekamiah became the father of Elishama.

The sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim, 51 Salma the father of Bethlehem and Hareph the father of Beth-gader. 52 Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had [other] sons (descendants): Haroeh, half of the Manahathites [in Judah], 53 and the families of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. From these came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites. 54 The sons (descendants) of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites. 55 The families of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.
