Jesus’s Lamenting over Jerusalem

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(A) who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[a] under her wings, but you were not willing!(B) 38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(C) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[b](D)

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

24 As Jesus left and was going out of the temple,(E) his disciples(F) came up and called his attention to its buildings. He replied to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (G)

Jesus replied to them, “Watch out that no one deceives(H) you. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.(I) You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[c](J) and earthquakes in various places.(K) All these events are the beginning of labor pains.(L)

Persecutions Predicted

“Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.(M) 10 Then many will fall away, betray one another, and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets(N) will rise up and deceive many. 12 Because lawlessness(O) will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world[d] as a testimony to all nations,(P) and then the end will come.(Q)

The Great Tribulation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation,[e] spoken of by the prophet Daniel,(R) standing in the holy place”(S) (let the reader understand), 16 “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 A man on the housetop[f] must not come down to get things out of his house,(T) 18 and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat. 19 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 20 Pray that your escape may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For at that time there will be great distress,[g](U) the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again. 22 Unless those days were cut short, no one would[h] be saved. But those days will be cut short because of the elect.(V)

The Widow’s Gift

41 Sitting(A) across from the temple treasury,(B) he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich(C) people were putting in large sums. 42 Then a poor(D) widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. 43 Summoning his disciples,(E) he said to them, “Truly I tell you,(F) this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.(G) 44 For they all gave out of their surplus,(H) but she out of her poverty(I) has put in everything she had(J) —all she had to live on.”(K)

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

13 As(L) he was going out of the temple,(M) one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher,(N) look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!” (O)

Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings?(P) Not one stone will be left upon another—all will be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives(Q) across from the temple,(R) Peter,(S) James,(T) John,(U) and Andrew(V) asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name,(W) saying, ‘I am he,’(X) and they will deceive(Y) many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars,(Z) don’t be alarmed;(AA) these things must take place,(AB) but it is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(AC) There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines.[a] These are the beginning(AD) of birth pains.(AE)

Persecutions Predicted

“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,[b](AF) and you will be flogged(AG) in the synagogues.(AH) You will stand before governors and kings(AI) because of me,(AJ) as a witness(AK) to them.(AL) 10 And it is necessary that the gospel(AM) be preached to all nations. 11 So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 “Brother will betray(AN) brother to death,(AO) and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name,(AP) but the one who endures to the end will be saved.(AQ)

The Great Tribulation

14 “When you see the abomination of desolation[c](AR) standing where it should not be” (let the reader understand), “then those in Judea(AS) must flee to the mountains. 15 A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house,(AT) 16 and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat.(AU) 17 Woe (AV) to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days!

18 “Pray(AW) it[d] won’t happen in winter. 19 For those will be days of tribulation,(AX) the kind that hasn’t been from the beginning(AY) of creation(AZ) until now and never will be again. 20 If the Lord(BA) had not cut those days short,(BB) no one would be saved. But he cut those days short for the sake of the elect,(BC) whom he chose.(BD)

The Widow’s Gift

21 He(A) looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury.(B) He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.[a](C) “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all of them.(D) For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

As(E) some were talking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, “These things that you see—the days will come(F) when not one stone will be left on another that will not be thrown down.”(G)

Signs of the End of the Age

“Teacher,” they asked him, “so when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” (H)

Then he said, “Watch out that you are not deceived.(I) For many will come in my name,(J) saying, ‘I am he,’(K) and, ‘The time is near.’ Don’t follow them.(L) When you hear of wars and rebellions,[b] don’t be alarmed. Indeed, it is necessary that these things take place first, but the end won’t come right away.”

10 Then he told them, “Nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(M) 11 There will be violent earthquakes,(N) and famines and plagues(O) in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.(P) 12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you(Q) and persecute(R) you. They will hand you over to the synagogues(S) and prisons,(T) and you will be brought before kings and governors(U) because of my name. 13 This will give you an opportunity to bear witness.(V) 14 Therefore make up your minds[c] not to prepare your defense ahead of time,(W) 15 for I will give you such words(X) and a wisdom(Y) that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.(Z) 16 You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends.(AA) They will kill some of you. 17 You will be hated by everyone because of my name,(AB) 18 but not a hair of your head will be lost.(AC) 19 By your endurance, gain[d] your lives.(AD)

The Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,(AE) then recognize that its desolation(AF) has come near. 21 Then those in Judea must flee(AG) to the mountains.(AH) Those inside the city must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it, 22 because these are days of vengeance(AI) to fulfill all the things that are written. 23 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days,(AJ) for there will be great distress in the land[e] and wrath against this people. 24 They will be killed by the sword[f](AK) and be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles[g](AL) until the times of the Gentiles(AM) are fulfilled.
