Matthew 15:1-9

Traditions and Commandments
15 (A)Then Pharisees and (B)scribes came to Jesus (C)from Jerusalem and said, 2 (D)“Why do your disciples break (E)the tradition of the elders? (F)For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, (G)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, (H)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”[a] 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have (I)made void the word[b] of God. 7 (J)You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 (K)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as (L)doctrines the commandments of men.’”

Warning Against False Teachers
3 (A)As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not (B)to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor (C)to devote themselves to myths and endless (D)genealogies, which promote (E)speculations rather than the stewardship[a] from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love (F)that issues from a pure heart and (G)a good conscience and (H)a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by (I)swerving from these, have wandered away into (J)vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, (K)without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
8 Now we know that (L)the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the (M)law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers,[b] liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (N)sound[c] doctrine, 11 in accordance with (O)the gospel of the glory of (P)the blessed God (Q)with which I have been entrusted.
Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners
12 I thank him (R)who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, (S)appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, (T)persecutor, and insolent opponent. But (U)I received mercy (V)because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and (W)the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the (X)faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is (Y)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus (Z)came into the world to save sinners, (AA)of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To (AB)the King of the ages, (AC)immortal, (AD)invisible, (AE)the only God, (AF)be honor and glory forever and ever.[d] Amen.
18 This charge (AG)I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with (AH)the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may (AI)wage the good warfare, 19 (AJ)holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have (AK)made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are (AL)Hymenaeus and (AM)Alexander, whom I (AN)have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to (AO)blaspheme.
