Jesus hyldes som en kongesøn
2 Jesus blev født i Betlehem i Judæa, mens Herodes den Store var konge. Nogen tid efter ankom nogle stjernetydere fra Østen til Jerusalem. De spurgte: 2 „Hvor er jødernes nyfødte konge? Vi har set hans stjerne i Østen, og nu er vi kommet her for at bringe ham vores hyldest.”
3 Kong Herodes blev skrækslagen, og Jerusalem begyndte at summe af rygter. 4 Han sammenkaldte derfor ypperstepræsterne[a] og alle jødernes skriftlærde til et møde og spurgte: „Har profeterne sagt noget om, hvor Messias skal fødes?”
5 „Ja,” svarede de, „i Betlehem. For en af profeterne har skrevet:
6 ‚Du Betlehem i Judas land!
Du er langtfra den ringeste blandt Judas byer.
Fra dig skal en hersker udgå,
han skal blive leder for mit folk, Israel!’ ”[b]
7 Derefter tilkaldte Herodes i al hemmelighed stjernetyderne, og de fortalte ham det nøjagtige tidspunkt, da de første gang havde set stjernen. 8 „I skal søge efter barnet i Betlehem,” sagde han. „Når I har fundet det, skal I komme tilbage og fortælle mig, hvor han er. Så vil jeg også tage derhen og hylde ham.”
9-10 Da stjernetyderne havde talt med kongen, tog de af sted. Kort efter fik de til deres store glæde igen øje på den stjerne, de havde set i Østen. Og de fulgte den, indtil den stod stille over det sted, hvor barnet var.
11 De gik ind i huset, og der så de Jesus sammen med hans mor, Maria. De knælede ned foran ham og bøjede i ærefrygt hovedet mod jorden. Derefter åbnede de for deres medbragte kostbarheder og gav ham både guld, røgelse og myrra.
12 Senere advarede Gud dem i en drøm imod at tage tilbage til Herodes. Derfor rejste de en anden vej hjem.
Flugten til Egypten
13 Da stjernetyderne var taget af sted, viste en engel sig for Josef i en drøm. „Stå op og flygt til Egypten med barnet og dets mor,” sagde englen. „Kong Herodes leder efter barnet for at slå det ihjel. Bliv i Egypten, indtil jeg siger til.” 14 Samme nat tog Josef af sted med Maria og barnet, og de bosatte sig i Egypten, 15 indtil Herodes var død. Sådan gik det i opfyldelse, som Herren havde talt gennem en af sine profeter:
„Jeg kaldte min søn ud af Egypten.”[c]
Massakren på børnene i Betlehem
16 Herodes blev rasende, da han opdagede, at stjernetyderne havde narret ham. Han sendte straks soldater til Betlehem og omegn for at dræbe alle drengebørn på to år og derunder ud fra de oplysninger, stjernetyderne havde givet ham.
17 Med den massakre opfyldtes profeten Jeremias’ ord:
18 „I Rama høres der skrig,
jamren og højlydt gråd.
Det er Rakel, der græder over sine børn.[d]
Hun vil ikke lade sig trøste,
for børnene er borte.”
Hjemrejsen fra Egypten
19 Efter at Herodes var død, viste englen sig igen i en drøm for Josef i Egypten og sagde: 20 „Rejs tilbage til Israel sammen med barnet og hans mor. De, som ville slå barnet ihjel, er selv døde.” 21 Josef begav sig da på vej tilbage mod Israel med Jesus og Maria. 22 Men da han hørte, at Herodes’ søn, Arkelaos, var blevet konge i Judæa efter sin far, var han bange for at tage derhen. Desuden blev han advaret i endnu en drøm og besluttede derfor at tage til Galilæa, 23 hvor han bosatte sig i den by, der hedder Nazaret. På den måde opfyldtes det profetiske ord om, at Messias skulle kaldes „nazaræer”.[e]

- 2,4 Ordet „ypperstepræst” betegner den øverste eller ledende præst, som blandt andet var formand for det højeste jødiske råd, Synedriet, med 70 medlemmer blandt præsterne, de skriftlærde og øvrige jødiske ledere. Selv om der kun var én fungerende ypperstepræst på et bestemt tidspunkt, havde de tidligere ypperstepræster stadig stor indflydelse og blev taget med på råd. Derfor møder vi ofte ordet i flertal som her.

- 2,18 Rakel døde lidt uden for Betlehem under jamren og højlydt gråd, da hun fødte sønnen Benjamin, jf. 1.Mos. 35,16-20. Derfor betragtes Betlehems indbyggere som Rakels „børn”. Der står et monument over Rakels grav lidt uden for Betlehem den dag i dag. Byen Rama var en af de vigtigste byer i Benjamins stammeområde, nord for Jerusalem. Der blev et ramaskrig dengang 25.000 krigere fra Benjamins stamme blev dræbt af de øvrige israelitter og byerne nedbrændt. Kun 600 krigere fra Benjamins stamme undslap ved at flygte, jf. Dom. 20,46-48. Der blev også et ramaskrig, da det meste af befolkningen blev ført i eksil til Babylon, jf. Jer. 31,15.
- 2,23 Dette ord har intet med „naziræer” at gøre, men henviser til Es. 11,1, som taler om et rodskud fra Isajs stub. Isaj var far til kong David, og Davids kongerige sammenlignes med et træ, som er fældet med kun en stub tilbage. Fra denne stub kom der et nyt skud. Det hebraiske ord for „rodskud” er netzer, og de kristne blev fra begyndelsen på hebraisk kaldt for notzrim eller netzrim dvs. „rodskudsfolket”. Man ved nu, at ordet Nazaret egentlig på hebraisk blev stavet med tz som i „Natzaret”, og det hjælper til at klargøre forbindelsen til netzer.

智者來朝拜
2 希律王執政期間，耶穌降生在猶太的伯利恆城。
當時有幾位智者[a]從東方來到耶路撒冷， 2 問道：「那生來做猶太人之王的在哪裡呢？我們在東方看見祂的星，特來朝拜祂。」
3 希律王聽後，心裡不安，全城的人都感到不安。 4 希律王就召來祭司長和律法教師，問他們：「基督在哪裡降生呢？」
5 他們回答說：「在猶太的伯利恆，因為先知這樣記載，
6 『猶大地區的伯利恆啊！
你在猶大各城中並不是最小的，
因為有一位君王要從你那裡出來，
牧養我的以色列子民。』」
7 於是，希律暗中召見那幾位智者，仔細查問那星出現的準確時間， 8 然後派他們去伯利恆，並吩咐道：「你們去仔細尋訪那個小孩，找到了，就回來報信，我也好去朝拜祂。」
9 他們聽了王的吩咐，就去了。忽然，那顆曾在東方出現的星又出現在他們前面，引領他們來到小孩耶穌所在的地方，便停下來。 10 他們看見那顆星，喜出望外。

定居拿撒勒
19 希律死後，主的天使在夢中向在埃及的約瑟顯現，說： 20 「起來，帶著孩子和祂母親回以色列去吧！因為要殺害孩子的人已經死了。」 21 約瑟就起來，帶著孩子和祂母親返回以色列。
22 但約瑟聽聞亞基勞繼承父親希律的王位統治猶太，就不敢回猶太。這時，他在夢中得到主的指示，便前往加利利地區， 23 定居在拿撒勒鎮。這應驗了先知的話：「祂將被稱為拿撒勒人。」

2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”(F)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[d](R)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)

Los sabios de Oriente
2 Jesús nació en Belén un pueblo de Judea, durante el reinado de Herodes. Por entonces llegaron a Jerusalén, procedentes de Oriente, unos sabios, 2 que preguntaban:
— ¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos recién nacido? Nosotros hemos visto aparecer su estrella en el Oriente y venimos a adorarlo.
3 El rey Herodes se inquietó mucho cuando llegó esto a sus oídos, y lo mismo les sucedió a todos los habitantes de Jerusalén. 4 Así que ordenó que se reunieran los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley para averiguar por medio de ellos dónde había de nacer el Mesías. 5 Ellos le dieron esta respuesta:
— En Belén de Judá, porque así lo escribió el profeta:
6 Tú, Belén, en el territorio de Judá,
no eres en modo alguno la menor
entre las ciudades importantes de Judá,
pues de ti saldrá un caudillo
que guiará a mi pueblo Israel.
7 Entonces Herodes hizo llamar en secreto a los sabios para que le informaran con exactitud sobre el tiempo en que habían visto la estrella. 8 Luego los envió a Belén diciéndoles:
— Vayan allá y averigüen cuanto les sea posible acerca de ese niño. Y cuando lo hayan encontrado, háganmelo saber para que también yo vaya a adorarlo.
9 Los sabios, después de oír al rey, emprendieron de nuevo la marcha, y la estrella que habían visto en Oriente los guió hasta que se detuvo sobre el lugar donde estaba el niño. 10 Al ver la estrella, se llenaron de alegría. 11 Entraron entonces en la casa, vieron al niño con su madre María y, cayendo de rodillas, lo adoraron. Sacaron luego los tesoros que llevaban consigo y le ofrecieron oro, incienso y mirra.
12 Y advertidos por un sueño para que no volvieran adonde estaba Herodes, regresaron a su país por otro camino.
Huida a Egipto
13 Cuando se marcharon los sabios, un ángel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José y le dijo:
— Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, huye con ellos a Egipto y quédate allí hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo.
14 José se levantó, tomó al niño y a la madre en plena noche y partió con ellos camino de Egipto, 15 donde permaneció hasta la muerte de Herodes. Así se cumplió lo que el Señor había dicho por medio del profeta: De Egipto llamé a mi hijo.
Los niños asesinados en Belén
16 Al darse cuenta Herodes de que se habían burlado de él aquellos sabios, montó en cólera y mandó matar en Belén y sus alrededores a todos los niños menores de dos años, conforme al tiempo que calculó a partir de los informes de los sabios. 17 Así se cumplió lo dicho por medio del profeta Jeremías:
18 En Ramá ha resonado un clamor
de muchos llantos y lamentos.
Es Raquel, que llora por sus hijos
y no quiere que la consuelen,
porque están muertos.
Regreso de Egipto
19 Después de muerto Herodes, un ángel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José, en Egipto, 20 y le dijo:
— Ponte en camino con el niño y con su madre y regresa con ellos a Israel, porque ya han muerto los que amenazaban la vida del niño.
21 José tomó al niño y a la madre, se puso en camino y regresó con ellos a Israel. 22 Pero al enterarse de que Arquelao, hijo de Herodes, reinaba en Judea en lugar de su padre, tuvo miedo de ir allá. Así que, advertido por un sueño, se dirigió a la región de Galilea 23 y se estableció en un pueblo llamado Nazaret. De esta manera se cumplió lo dicho por medio de los profetas: que Jesús sería llamado nazareno.

7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
