John 7:32-52

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

³²The Pharisees heard the crowd ^(A)muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent ^(B)officers to arrest him. ³³Jesus then said, ^(C)“I will be with you a little longer, and then ^(D)I am going to him who sent me. ³⁴^(E)You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” ³⁵The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? ^(F)Does he intend to go to ^(G)the Dispersion among ^(H)the Greeks and teach the Greeks? ³⁶What does he mean by saying, ^(I)‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

³⁷^(J)On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ^(K)“If anyone thirsts, let him ^(L)come to me and drink. ³⁸Whoever believes in me, ^(M)as^[a] the Scripture has said, ^(N)‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of ^(O)living water.’” ³⁹Now ^(P)this he said about the Spirit, ^(Q)whom those who believed in him were to receive, ^(R)for as yet the Spirit had not been ^(S)given, ^(T)because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

⁴⁰When they heard these words, ^(U)some of the people said, “This really is ^(V)the Prophet.” ⁴¹Others said, “This is ^(W)the Christ.” But some said, ^(X)“Is the Christ to come from Galilee? ⁴²Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes ^(Y)from the offspring of David, and comes ^(Z)from Bethlehem, the village ^(AA)where David was?” ⁴³So there was ^(AB)a division among the people over him. ⁴⁴^(AC)Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

⁴⁵^(AD)The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” ⁴⁶The officers answered, ^(AE)“No one ever spoke like this man!” ⁴⁷The Pharisees answered them, ^(AF)“Have you also been deceived? ⁴⁸^(AG)Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” ⁵⁰^(AH)Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, ⁵¹^(AI)“Does our law judge a man without first ^(AJ)giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” ⁵²They replied, ^(AK)“Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that ^(AL)no prophet arises from Galilee.”

24 ^(A)The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,^[a]
the world and those who dwell therein,
²for he has ^(B)founded it upon ^(C)the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

³^(D)Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his ^(E)holy place?
⁴^(F)He who has ^(G)clean hands and ^(H)a pure heart,
    who does not ^(I)lift up his soul to ^(J)what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
⁵He will receive ^(K)blessing from the Lord
    and ^(L)righteousness from ^(M)the God of his salvation.
⁶Such is ^(N)the generation of those who seek him,
    who ^(O)seek the face of the God of Jacob.^[b] Selah

    And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that ^(Q)the King of glory may come in.
⁸Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty,
