The Lord’s Message to Baruch

45 This is the word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah(A) when he wrote these words on a scroll at Jeremiah’s dictation[a](B) in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:(C) “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: ‘You have said, “Woe is me, because the Lord has added misery to my pain! I am worn out with[b] groaning and have found no rest.”’(D)

“This is what you are to say to him: ‘This is what the Lord says: “What I have built I am about to demolish, and what I have planted I am about to uproot(E)—the whole land! But as for you, do you pursue great things for yourself? Stop pursuing! For I am about to bring disaster on all humanity”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war(F) wherever you go.”’”

Prophecies against the Nations

46 This is the word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah about the nations:(G)

Prophecies against Egypt

About Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt’s king,(H) which was defeated at Carchemish(I) on the Euphrates River by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim son of Josiah:(J)

Deploy small shields(K) and large;
approach for battle!
Harness the horses;
mount the steeds;[c]
take your positions with helmets on!
Polish the lances;
put on armor!(L)
Why have I seen this?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are crushed,
they flee headlong,
they never look back,
terror is on every side!(M)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
The swift cannot flee,
and the warrior cannot escape!(N)
In the north by the bank of the Euphrates River,
they stumble and fall.(O)
Who is this, rising like the Nile,(P)
with waters that churn like rivers?
Egypt rises like the Nile,(Q)
and its waters churn like rivers.
He boasts, “I will go up, I will cover the earth;
I will destroy cities with their residents.”
Rise up, you cavalry!
Race furiously, you chariots!
Let the warriors march out—
Cush and Put,(R)
who are able to handle shields,
and the men of Lud,(S)
who are able to handle and string the bow.(T)
10 That day belongs to the Lord, the God of Armies,
a day of vengeance to avenge himself
against his adversaries.
The sword will devour and be satisfied;
it will drink its fill of their blood,
because it will be a sacrifice(U) to the Lord, the God of Armies,
in the northern land by the Euphrates River.(V)
11 Go up to Gilead and get balm,(W)
Virgin Daughter Egypt!
You have multiplied remedies in vain;
there is no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your dishonor,(X)
and your cries fill the earth,
because warrior stumbles against warrior
and together both of them have fallen.

13 This is the word the Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah about the coming of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to defeat the land of Egypt:(Y)

14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol!(Z)
Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!
Say, “Take positions! Prepare yourself,
for the sword devours all around you.”(AA)
15 Why have your strong ones been swept away?
Each has not stood,
for the Lord has thrust him down.
16 He continues to stumble.(AB)
Indeed, each falls over the other.
They say, “Get up! Let’s return to our people
and to our native land,
away from the oppressor’s sword.”(AC)
17 There they will cry out,
“Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;
he let the opportune moment pass.”
18 As I live—
this is the King’s declaration;
the Lord of Armies is his name(AD)
the king of Babylon[d] will come like Tabor among the mountains
and like Carmel by the sea.
19 Get your bags ready for exile,
inhabitant of Daughter Egypt!(AE)
For Memphis will become a desolation,
uninhabited ruins.
20 Egypt is a beautiful young cow,(AF)
but a horsefly from the north is coming against her.[e](AG)
21 Even her mercenaries among her
are like stall-fed calves.
They too will turn back;
together they will flee;
they will not take their stand,
for the day of their calamity is coming on them,
the time of their punishment.(AH)
22 Egypt will hiss like a slithering snake,[f]
for the enemy will come with an army;
with axes they will come against her
like those who cut trees.(AI)
23 They will cut down her forest—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
though it is dense,
for they are more numerous than locusts;
they cannot be counted.(AJ)
24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,
handed over to a northern people.(AK)

25 The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says, “I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes,(AL) along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings—Pharaoh and those trusting in him. 26 I will hand them over to those who intend to take their lives(AM)—to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his officers. But after this,(AN) Egypt[g] will be inhabited again as in ancient times.”

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Reassurance for Israel

27 But you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid,(AO)
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away,
and your descendants from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.
28 And you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
for I will be with you.(AP)
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have banished you,
but I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you with justice,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.(AQ)

Christ in Your Home

18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.(A) 19 Husbands,(B) love your wives(C) and don’t be bitter(D) toward them. 20 Children,(E) obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers,(F) do not exasperate(G) your children, so that they won’t become discouraged. 22 Slaves, obey your human(H) masters in everything. Don’t work only while being watched, as people-pleasers, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord.(I) 23 Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people,(J) 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer(K) will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favoritism.

Masters,(L) deal with your slaves justly and fairly, since you know that you too have a Master in heaven.

Speaking to God and Others

Devote yourselves(M) to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us that God may open a door(N) to us for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ,(O) for which I am in chains,(P) so that I may make it known as I should. Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.(Q) Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,(R) so that you may know how you should answer each person.(S)

Final Greetings

Tychicus,(T) our dearly loved brother, faithful(U) minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are[a] and so that he may encourage(V) your hearts.(W) He is coming with Onesimus,(X) a faithful and dearly loved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, sends you greetings, as does Mark,(Y) Barnabas’s(Z) cousin (concerning whom you have received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and so does Jesus who is called Justus. These alone of the circumcised are my coworkers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras,(AA) who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. He is always wrestling(AB) for you in his prayers, so that you can stand mature and fully assured[b] in everything God wills.(AC) 13 For I testify about him that he works hard[c](AD) for you, for those in Laodicea,(AE) and for those in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the dearly loved physician, and Demas(AF) send you greetings. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers and sisters in Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her home.(AG) 16 After this letter has been read at your gathering, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 And tell Archippus,(AH) “Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord, so that you can accomplish it.”(AI)

18 I, Paul, am writing this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains.(AJ) Grace be with you.[d](AK)

ג Gimel

17 Deal generously with your servant(A)
so that I might live;
then I will keep your word.
18 Open my eyes so that I may contemplate
wondrous things from your instruction.
19 I am a resident alien on earth;(B)
do not hide your commands from me.
20 I am continually overcome
with longing for your judgments.(C)
21 You rebuke the arrogant,
the ones under a curse,(D)
who wander from your commands.(E)
22 Take insult and contempt away from me,(F)
for I have kept your decrees.
23 Though princes sit together speaking against me,(G)
your servant will think about your statutes;(H)
24 your decrees are my delight
and my counselors.(I)
