神の救いの約束
6 主はモーセに言いました。「わたしがしようとしていることは、そのうちわかる。王はどうにもならなくなってから、ようやくわたしの民を行かせるだろう。その時には、行くのを許すというより、むしろ国から追い出さないわけにはいかなくなるのだ。 2-3 わたしはアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに現れた全能の神、主である。もっとも、彼らには主という名ではわたしを知らせていなかったが……。 4 わたしは彼らと聖なる契約を結んだ。彼らと子孫とに、彼らが当時住んでいたカナンの地を与えると約束した。 5 今、イスラエル人がエジプト人の奴隷となってうめき苦しんでいるのが、よくわかった。そして、昔の約束を思い起こした。 6 だから人々に、主が必ず救い出すと伝えなさい。見ているがいい。わたしは大きな力をふるい、みわざを行う。彼らを奴隷の鎖から解き放ち、自由にする。 7 彼らはわたしの民となり、わたしは彼らの神となる。彼らは、エジプトから救い出したのがわたしであることを知る。 8-9 アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに与えると約束した地に、わたしは彼らを連れて行く。その地はわたしの民のものとなるのだ。」
モーセは、主から聞いたとおり人々に伝えました。しかし、もうだれも耳を傾けようとしませんでした。彼の言うことを聞いてひどい目に会ったため落胆していたのです。
10-11 主はまた、モーセに語りかけました。「さあもう一度、ファラオのもとへ行き、イスラエル人を行かせるように言いなさい。」
12 しかし、モーセは素直に従えません。「主よ、同胞のイスラエル人でさえ、もう私の言うことを聞こうとしないのです。まして、ファラオが聞くはずがありません。それにだいいち、私は口べたなのです。」
13 主はモーセとアロンに再び、イスラエルの民とファラオにもう一度話し、イスラエル人の出国を要求しなさいと命じました。
モーセとアロンの系図
14 彼らの家系の長は次のとおりです。
イスラエルの長男ルベンの子は、エノク、パル、ヘツロン、カルミ。
15 シメオンの子は、エムエル、ヤミン、オハデ、ヤキン、ツォハル、サウル〔母親はカナン人〕。
16 レビの子の家系は、ゲルション、ケハテ、メラリ。レビは百三十七歳で死にました。
17 ゲルションの子は、リブニ、シムイの氏族。
18 ケハテの子は、アムラム、イツハル、ヘブロン、ウジエル。ケハテは百三十三歳で死にました。
19 メラリの子は、マフリ、ムシ。
以上がレビの一族の家系です。
20 アムラムは父親の妹ヨケベデと結婚しました。その子がアロンとモーセです。アムラムは百三十七歳で死にました。
21 イツハルの子は、コラ、ネフェグ、ジクリ。
22 ウジエルの子は、ミシャエル、エルツァファン、シテリ。
23 アロンは、アミナダブの娘でナフションの妹エリシェバと結婚しました。彼らの子は、ナダブ、アビフ、エルアザル、イタマル。
24 コラの子は、アシル、エルカナ、アビアサフ。これがコラの一族です。
25 アロンの子エルアザルは、プティエルの娘と結婚しました。その子の一人がピネハスです。
以上がレビ族の長とその氏族に属する家族の名です。
26 この中のアロンとモーセの二人が、「イスラエル人を一人残らずエジプトから救い出せ」と、主から命令を受けたのです。 27 彼らはファラオのところへ行き、イスラエル人をエジプトから去らせるようにと要求しました。 28-29 二人はまた、「わたしが主である。行って、わたしの言うことをみなファラオに伝えよ」という命令も受けました。 30 その際モーセは、「私にはできません。口べたなのです。どうして彼が、私などの言うことを聞くでしょう」と答えました。
7 主はモーセに言いました。「あなたをわたしの使者として、エジプトの王ファラオのもとへ遣わす。兄アロンがあなたの代わりに話す。 2 あなたはわたしから聞いたとおりをアロンに話し、それを彼がファラオに伝えればよい。イスラエル人をエジプトから行かせるように要求するのだ。 3 ファラオは簡単には承知しないので、わたしはエジプトで数々の奇跡を行う。 4 それでも、彼はなかなか言うことを聞かないだろう。そこで最後に、大きな災いを送って痛めつけ、そのあとで、わたしの民を救い出す。 5 その力を目の当たりにする時、エジプト人は、わたしがほんとうに主であることをはっきりと知るだろう。」
アロンの杖
6 モーセとアロンは、主の命令どおりにしました。 7 その時、モーセは八十歳、アロンは八十三歳でした。
8 主はさらにモーセとアロンに言いました。 9 「ファラオは、神から遣わされた証拠に奇跡を見せろと要求するだろう。その時、アロンはこの杖を投げるのだ。それはすぐさま蛇に変わる。」
10 モーセとアロンは宮殿に出かけて行ってファラオと面会し、奇跡を行いました。主に教えられたとおり、ファラオをはじめ居並ぶ家臣たちの前でアロンが杖を投げると、たちまち蛇になったのです。 11 王も負けじと、魔術を行う呪術師を呼び寄せ、彼らも魔法で同じことをしました。 12 彼らの杖も蛇に変わりましたが、その蛇はアロンの蛇にのみ込まれてしまいました。 13 それでもファラオは、頑としてモーセの言うことを聞こうとしません。 14 彼は強情で、イスラエル人の出国はあくまで許さないだろうと、主が言ったとおりでした。
第一の災い 血
15 しかし、主はなおも命じます。「がっかりしてはいけない。朝になったら、またファラオのところへ行きなさい。彼は川へ水浴びに行くから、この前、蛇に変わった杖を持って、岸で待っているのだ。 16 彼に会ったなら、こう言いなさい。『ヘブル人の神、主が私を遣わして、「荒野で神を礼拝できるように民を行かせなさい」と言われました。しかしこの前は、私の言うことを聞こうともしませんでした。 17 今、主はこう言われます。「今度こそ、わたしが神であることを必ず思い知ろう。モーセに杖でナイル川の水を打てと命じると、川は血に変わるからだ。 18 魚は死に、水は臭くなり、エジプト人はナイルの水を飲めなくなる」と。』」
19 主のことばはさらに続きます。「エジプト中のあらゆる水を杖で指すよう、アロンに言いなさい。そうすれば、川、運河、沼地、池から、家の中の鉢や水差しにくんだ水まで、みな血に変わる。」
20 そこで、モーセとアロンは命じられたとおりにしました。ファラオと家臣たちの目の前で、アロンが杖でナイル川の水面を打ちました。と、どうでしょう。ナイルの水はみるみる真っ赤な血に変わったのです。 21 魚は死に、水は臭くなって、とても飲むことはできません。国中が血であふれました。 22 しかしエジプトの魔術師たちも、秘術を用いて水を血に変えて見せたので、ファラオはかたくなな心を変えず、モーセとアロンには耳を貸そうとしませんでした。やはり主が言ったとおりです。 23 ファラオは何事もなかったように、平然と宮殿へ帰りました。 24 エジプト人は飲み水を手に入れるため、川岸に沿って井戸を掘りました。ナイル川の水が飲めなかったからです。
25 さて次の週のことです。
第二の災い かえる
8 主はモーセに言いました。「もう一度、ファラオのところへ行って警告しなさい。『主はこう言われます。「わたしの民が行ってわたしを礼拝するのを拒んではならない。 2 もし行かせないなら、かえるの大群を発生させて国の端から端まで、かえるだらけにする。 3-4 ナイル川はかえるであふれ、家の中まで跳び込んで来る。寝室もベッドも、家中かえるで足の踏み場もなくなる。かまどや粉をこねる鉢にまで入り込む。エジプトはかえるで埋め尽くされるだろう。」』」
5 そして、こう続けました。「杖をエジプト中の川や水たまりに向けるよう、アロンに命じなさい。この国の隅々までかえるであふれる。」 6 アロンが言われたとおりにすると、エジプトはかえるであふれ返りました。 7 しかし、魔術師たちも手をこまねいてはいません。秘術を使って、同じようにかえるを生じさせました。
8 困り果てたファラオは、モーセとアロンを呼びました。「かえるを何とかしてくれ。もうたくさんだ。おまえたちの神に頼んでくれ。かえるさえいなくなったら、おまえたちをこの国から出してやろう。神でも主でも、好きなように拝みに行くがよい。」
9 「ありがたいことです。それで、いつ出発できますか。その日が決まりしだい、さっそく祈りましょう。お望みの時に、ナイル川のかえるを残して、かえるは一匹残らず死にます。」
10 「よしわかった。明日にでも。」
「けっこうです。おっしゃるとおりにしましょう。その時、私たちの神、主のような方はほかにいないことが、よくおわかりになるでしょう。 11 ナイル川にいるかえるのほかは、みな死にます。」
12 モーセとアロンはファラオの前から下がりました。モーセがかえるのことを主にお願いすると、 13 そのとおりになりました。田舎といわず町といわず、家の中までもいたかえるは死に絶えて、死骸でいっぱいになりました。 14 あちこちに山と積み上げられた死骸から、吐き気をもよおすような悪臭がぷんぷんにおってきます。 15 ところが、かえるが死んでしまうと、ファラオはまた強情になり、約束を破って、イスラエル人を行かせないことにしました。主が予告したとおりでした。
第三の災い ぶよ
16 主はまた、モーセに言いました。「地面のちりを杖で打つよう、アロンに命じなさい。エジプト中のちりは、ぶよになる。」 17 二人は命じられたとおりにしました。すると、ぶよが大発生し、エジプト人と家畜に取りつきました。 18 魔術師たちも同じことをしようとしましたが、今度は失敗しました。
19 「これはまさしく神のわざです。」魔術師たちはファラオに叫びました。しかし、ファラオはますますかたくなになるばかりで、それにも耳を傾けようとしませんでした。まさに神が予告したとおりでした。
第四の災い あぶ
20 次に主はモーセに命じました。「明日の朝早く起きなさい。王が水浴びに川へ来るから、その時こう告げなさい。『主はこう言われます。「わたしの民が礼拝しに行くのを許しなさい。 21 もし許さないなら、エジプト中にあぶの大群を発生させる。家々はあぶだらけになり、地面もあぶで見えなくなる。 22 しかし、イスラエル人が住むゴシェンの地には、そういうことはない。あぶは一匹も出ない。こうして、わたしが全地を支配する神、主であることをあなたは知る。 23 あなたの民とわたしの民とを、はっきり区別するからだ。これらのことはみな、明日起こる」』」
24 神がそのとおりにしたので、王の宮殿にもエジプトのどの家にも、恐ろしいあぶの大群が現れました。
25 あわてたのはファラオです。急いでモーセとアロンを呼びつけました。「わかった、わかった。おまえたちの好きにするがいい。自分たちの神にいけにえをささげるのもよかろう。ただし、この国の中においてだ。荒野へ出かけることは許さない。」
26 「おことばを返すようですが、それはだめです。私たちがささげるいけにえは、エジプトではたいへん嫌われているものです。そこでいけにえをささげたら、私たちのほうが殺されかねません。 27 神様の命令どおり、三日ほど旅をして、荒野でいけにえをささげなければなりません。」
28 「もう好きにしろ。ただ、あまり遠くへ行ってはならない。それよりも、急いで、私のためにも祈ってくれ。」
29 「わかりました。あぶの大群がいなくなるよう、神様にお願いしましょう。ですが、また気が変わって約束を破るようなまねは、二度となさらないでください。」
30 モーセはファラオの前から退き、あぶがいなくなるようにしてくださいと主に願いました。 31-32 主はその願いどおりにし、あれほどのあぶの大群がすっかり姿を消し、どこにも見えなくなったのです。ところが、心配がなくなると、王はまたまた強情になり、イスラエル人を行かせようとはしませんでした。

6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand(A) he will let them go;(B) because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.”(C)
2 God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord.(D) 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty,[a](E) but by my name(F) the Lord[b](G) I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant(H) with them to give them the land(I) of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners.(J) 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning(K) of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.(L)
6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.(M) I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem(N) you with an outstretched arm(O) and with mighty acts of judgment.(P) 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.(Q) Then you will know(R) that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land(S) I swore(T) with uplifted hand(U) to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.(V) I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”(W)
9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.(X)
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go, tell(Y) Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.”(Z)
12 But Moses said to the Lord, “If the Israelites will not listen(AA) to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips[c]?”(AB)
Family Record of Moses and Aaron
13 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.(AC)
14 These were the heads of their families[d]:(AD)
The sons of Reuben(AE) the firstborn son of Israel were Hanok and Pallu, Hezron and Karmi. These were the clans of Reuben.
15 The sons of Simeon(AF) were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These were the clans of Simeon.
16 These were the names of the sons of Levi(AG) according to their records: Gershon,(AH) Kohath and Merari.(AI) Levi lived 137 years.
17 The sons of Gershon, by clans, were Libni and Shimei.(AJ)
18 The sons of Kohath(AK) were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.(AL) Kohath lived 133 years.
19 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi.(AM)
These were the clans of Levi according to their records.
20 Amram(AN) married his father’s sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses.(AO) Amram lived 137 years.
21 The sons of Izhar(AP) were Korah, Nepheg and Zikri.
22 The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan(AQ) and Sithri.
23 Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab(AR) and sister of Nahshon,(AS) and she bore him Nadab and Abihu,(AT) Eleazar(AU) and Ithamar.(AV)
24 The sons of Korah(AW) were Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph. These were the Korahite clans.
25 Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas.(AX)
These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan.
26 It was this Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring the Israelites out of Egypt(AY) by their divisions.”(AZ) 27 They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh(BA) king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt—this same Moses and Aaron.(BB)
Aaron to Speak for Moses
28 Now when the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt, 29 he said to him, “I am the Lord.(BC) Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.”
30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Since I speak with faltering lips,(BD) why would Pharaoh listen to me?”
7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God(BE) to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.(BF) 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(BG) and though I multiply my signs and wonders(BH) in Egypt, 4 he will not listen(BI) to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment(BJ) I will bring out my divisions,(BK) my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(BL) when I stretch out my hand(BM) against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”
6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded(BN) them. 7 Moses was eighty years old(BO) and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Snake
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,(BP)’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”(BQ)
10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers,(BR) and the Egyptian magicians(BS) also did the same things by their secret arts:(BT) 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart(BU) became hard and he would not listen(BV) to them, just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Blood
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;(BW) he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river.(BX) Confront him on the bank of the Nile,(BY) and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship(BZ) me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.(CA) 17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord:(CB) With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.(CC) 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink;(CD) the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’”(CE)
19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff(CF) and stretch out your hand(CG) over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[e] of wood and stone.”
20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded.(CH) He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile,(CI) and all the water was changed into blood.(CJ) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.
22 But the Egyptian magicians(CK) did the same things by their secret arts,(CL) and Pharaoh’s heart(CM) became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water(CN), because they could not drink the water of the river.
The Plague of Frogs
25 Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile. 8 1 [f]Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(CO) me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs(CP) on your whole country. 3 The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people,(CQ) and into your ovens and kneading troughs.(CR) 4 The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”
5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff(CS) over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs(CT) come up on the land of Egypt.’”
6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs(CU) came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts;(CV) they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
8 Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray(CW) to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices(CX) to the Lord.”
9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time(CY) for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”
10 “Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.
Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God.(CZ) 11 The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”
12 After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did what Moses asked.(DA) The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. 14 They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief,(DB) he hardened his heart(DC) and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Gnats
16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff(DD) and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17 They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats(DE) came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18 But when the magicians(DF) tried to produce gnats by their secret arts,(DG) they could not.
Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19 the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger(DH) of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart(DI) was hard and he would not listen,(DJ) just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning(DK) and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(DL) me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.
22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen,(DM) where my people live;(DN) no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know(DO) that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23 I will make a distinction[g] between my people and your people.(DP) This sign will occur tomorrow.’”
24 And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.(DQ)
25 Then Pharaoh summoned(DR) Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”
26 But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians.(DS) And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must take a three-day journey(DT) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(DU) to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”
28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray(DV) for me.”
29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully(DW) again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”
30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord,(DX) 31 and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32 But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart(DY) and would not let the people go.

23 衆議一決し、全議員がそろって、イエスを総督ピラトのもとに連れて行きました。 2 そして口々に訴えました。「この男は、ローマ政府に税金を納めるなとか、自分こそメシヤだの、王だのと言って、国民を惑わした不届き者です。」 3 ピラトはイエスに問いただしました。「ほんとうに、おまえはユダヤ人のメシヤで、王なのか。」「そのとおりです。」 4 ピラトは祭司長や群衆のほうを向き、「この男には何の罪もないではないか」と言いました。 5 これを聞いて人々は、必死になって叫びました。「この男はガリラヤからエルサレムまで、ユダヤ全国で民衆をたきつけ、暴動を起こそうとしたんですよ！」 6 そこでピラトは、「では、この男はガリラヤ人なのか」と尋ね、 7 人々がそうだと答えると、イエスをヘロデ王（ヘロデ・アンテパス）のもとへ連行するように命じました。ガリラヤはヘロデの支配下にあり、その時ヘロデは、ちょうどエルサレムに滞在中だったからです。
8 イエスに会えて、ヘロデは大喜びでした。前々からイエスのうわさを耳にし、一度、イエスが行う奇跡を見てみたいと思っていたのです。 9 ヘロデはイエスを前にして、次から次へと質問をあびせました。ところがイエスは口をつぐみ、何一つ答えません。 10 祭司長や他の宗教的指導者たちは、そばに立ち、激しい口調でイエスを訴えました。 11 ヘロデと部下の兵士たちは、さんざんイエスをばかにし、あざけったあげく、王が着るようなガウンを着せて、ピラトのもとに送り返しました。 12 それまで敵対していたヘロデとピラトがたいそう親しくなったのは、この日からです。
13 ピラトは、祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たち、それに民衆もみないっしょに呼び出し、 14 判決を言い渡しました。「おまえたちは、この男を、ローマ政府への反乱を指導したかどで訴えた。それでくわしく調べてみたが、そのような容疑事実はない。この男は無罪だ。 15 ヘロデも同じ結論に達し、私のもとに送り返してきた。この男は死刑にあたるようなことは何もしていない。 16 だから、むちで打ってから釈放しようと思う。」
17-18 しかし、人々はいっせいに叫び立てました。「そいつを殺せ！ バラバを釈放しろ！」 19 バラバとは、エルサレムで政府転覆を図った罪と殺人罪とで投獄されていた男でした。 20 ピラトは、なんとかしてイエスを釈放しようと、なおも群衆を説得しましたが、 21 彼らは聞き入れません。「十字架だ！ 十字架につけろ！」と叫び続けるばかりです。 22 ピラトは、三度も念を押しました。「どうしてだ。この男がどんな悪事を働いたというのか。死刑を宣告する理由など見つからん。だから、むち打ってから釈放してやるつもりだ。」 23 それでも騒ぎはおさまりません。ますます大声で、イエスを十字架につけろと要求する群衆の声に、ついにピラトも負けてしまいました。 24 しかたなく彼らの要求どおりに、イエスに死刑を宣告し、 25 反逆罪と殺人罪で投獄されていたバラバを釈放しました。一方、イエスのほうは、すぐに人々の手に渡し、彼らの好きなようにさせました。
26 人々は、イエスを刑場に引いて行く途中、田舎からエルサレムに着いたばかりの、シモンというクレネ人にむりやり十字架を背負わせ、イエスのうしろから運ばせました。
27 大ぜいの民衆や、イエスのことを悲しむ女たちがあとからついて行きます。 28 イエスは女たちのほうをふり向き、とぎれとぎれに言われました。「エルサレムの娘たちよ。わたしのために泣いてはならない。自分と、自分の子どもたちのために泣きなさい。 29 なぜなら、子どもを持たない女のほうが幸いと思う日が、すぐにでも来るのです。 30 その時、人々は山に向かって、『私たちの上に倒れて、押しつぶしてくれ！』と叫び、丘に向かって、『私たちを埋めてくれ！』と頼むでしょう。 31 生木のわたしさえ、こんな目に会うとしたら、枯れ木同然の人たちには、いったい、どんなことが起こるでしょう。」
イエスの十字架の死と埋葬
32-33 イエスだけでなく、ほかに二人の犯罪人が、「どくろ」と呼ばれる場所で処刑されるために、引いて行かれました。刑場に着くと、三人は十字架につけられました。イエスが真ん中に、二人はその両側に。 34 その時、イエスはこう言われました。「父よ。彼らをお赦しください。彼らは、自分たちが何をしているのかわかっていないのです。」兵士たちがさいころを投げて、イエスの着物を分け合うのを、 35 民衆はそばに立ってながめていました。一方、ユダヤ人の指導者たちもイエスをあざけり、「他人ばかり助けて、このざまは何だ。ほんとうに神に選ばれたメシヤなら、自分を救ってみろ！」と言いました。 36 兵士たちは、酸っぱいぶどう酒を差し出しながら、 37 「ユダヤ人の王様なら、自分を救ったらどうだ！」とからかいました。 38 十字架のイエスの頭上には、「これはユダヤ人の王」と書いた罪状書きが掲げてありました。
39 イエスの横で十字架につけられていた犯罪人の一人が、「あんたはメシヤなんだってなあ。だったら、自分とおれたちを救ってもよさそうなもんだ。どうなんだ」とののしりました。 40-41 しかし、もう一人の犯罪人は、それをたしなめました。「この期に及んで、まだ神を恐れないのか！ おれたちは悪事を働いたんだから、報いを受けるのはあたりまえだ。だが、このお方は悪いことは何もしなかったのだ。」 42 そして、イエスにこう頼みました。「イエス様。御国に入る時、どうぞ私を思い出してください。」 43 イエスはお答えになりました。「あなたは今日、わたしといっしょにパラダイス（天国）に入ります。」
44 その時です。正午だというのに、突然、あたりが暗くなり、午後三時までそんな状態が続きました。 45 太陽は光を失い、神殿の幕が、なんと真っ二つに裂けたのです。 46 その時イエスは、大声で、「父よ。わたしの霊を御手におゆだねします！」と叫んで、息を引き取られました。 47 刑を執行していたローマ軍の隊長は、不思議な出来事を見て、神への恐れに打たれ、「確かに、この人は正しい方だった」と言いました。 48 また、十字架刑を見に来ていた群衆も、このイエスの最期を見て、みな深い悲しみに沈んで、家へ帰って行きました。 49 一方、ガリラヤからイエスに従って来た女たちやイエスの知人たちは、遠くからじっと様子を見守っていました。
50-52 そのころ、ユダヤの最高議会の議員で、アリマタヤ出身のヨセフという人が、ピラトのもとに行き、イエスの遺体を引き取りたいと願い出ました。彼はメシヤが来るのをひたすら待ち望んでいた神を敬う人物で、他の議員たちの決議や行動には同意していませんでした。 53 ヨセフはイエスの遺体を十字架から降ろし、長い亜麻布に包んで、まだだれも葬ったことのない、岩をくり抜いた新しい墓に納めました。
54 それは、安息日の準備の日にあたる金曜日の、午後遅いころのことでした。 55 遺体が十字架から降ろされた時、ガリラヤから従って来た女たちは、ヨセフのあとについて行き、イエスが墓に納められるのを見届けました。 56 それから家に戻り、遺体に塗る香料と香油とを用意しましたが、すぐに安息日になったので、ユダヤのおきてに従って休みました。

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)
