المَجمَعُ المَسِيحيُّ الأوَّل

15 وَجَاءَ بَعْضُ الرِّجَالِ مِنْ إقْلِيمِ اليَهُودِيَّةِ، وَكَانُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ المُؤمِنِينَ مَا يَلِي: «إنْ لَمْ تُختَتَنُوا حَسَبَ تَقْلِيدِ مُوسَى، فَلَا خَلَاصَ لَكُمْ.» 2 فَاختَلَفَ بَرنَابَا وشَاوُلُ مَعَهُمْ، وَحَدَثَ بَيْنَهُمْ جَدَلٌ كَبِيرٌ. فَوَقَعَ الاخْتِيَارُ عَلَى بُولُسَ وَبَرنَابَا وَبَعْضِ المُؤمِنِينَ لِلذَّهَابِ إلَى الرُّسُلِ وَالشُّيُوخِ فِي القُدْسِ لِبَحثِ هَذِهِ المَسألَةِ.

3 وَبَعْدَ أنْ وَدَّعَتْهُمُ الكَنِيسَةُ، انطَلَقُوا وَاجتَازُوا فِي فِينِيقِيَّةَ وَالسَّامِرَةِ، مُخبِرِينَ عَنِ اهتِدَاءِ غَيْرِ اليَهُودِ إلَى الإيمَانِ. وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ يُسَبِّبُ فَرَحًا عَظِيمًا لِكُلِّ الإخوَةِ. 4 وَعِنْدَمَا وَصَلُوا إلَى القُدْسِ، رَحَّبَتْ بِهِمُ الكَنِيسَةُ وَالرُّسُلُ وَالشُّيُوخُ.[a] فَأخبَرُوهُمْ بِكُلِّ مَا فَعَلَهُ اللهُ مَعَهُمْ. 5 فَوَقَفَ بَعْضُ المُؤمِنِينَ المُنتَمِينَ إلَى جَمَاعَةِ الفِرِّيسِيِّينَ وَقَالُوا: «يَنْبَغِي أنْ يُختَتَنَ غَيْرُ اليَهُودِ وَيُؤمَرُوا بِاتِّبَاعِ شَرِيعَةِ مُوسَى.»

6 فَاجتَمَعَ الرُّسُلُ وَالشُّيُوخُ لِدِرَاسَةِ هَذِهِ المَسألَةِ. 7 وَبَعْدَ مُبَاحَثَةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ، وَقَفَ بُطرُسُ وَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «أيُّهَا الإخْوَةُ، أنْتُمْ تَعْرِفُونَ أنَّ اللهَ قَدِ اخْتَارَنِي مِنْ بَينِكُمْ مُنْذُ الأيَّامِ الأُولَى، لِكَي يَسْمَعَ غَيْرُ اليَهُودِ رِسَالَةَ البِشَارَةِ عَلَى فَمِي وَيُؤمِنُوا. 8 فَاللهُ الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ مَا فِي القُلُوبِ، أظْهَرَ قُبُولَهُ لَهُمْ بِأنْ أعطَاهُمُ الرُّوحَ القُدُسَ[b] كَمَا فَعَلَ مَعَنَا نَحْنُ.[c] 9 فَلَمْ يُمَيِّزْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ، بَلْ طَهَّرَ بِالإيمَانِ قُلُوبَهُمْ. 10 فَلِمَاذَا تُحَاوِلونَ أنْ تُغْضِبُوا اللهَ بِوَضْعِ أثْقَالٍ عَلَى المُؤمِنِينَ لَمْ نَسْتَطِعْ نَحْنُ وَلَا آبَاؤُنَا أنْ نَحمِلَهَا؟ 11 لَكِنَّنَا نُؤمِنُ أنَّنَا نَخلُصُ بِنِعْمَةِ الرَّبِّ يَسُوعَ، وَنُؤمِنُ أنَّهُمْ سَيَخْلُصُونَ هَكَذَا أيْضًا.»

12 فَصَمَتُوا جَمِيعًا، ثُمَّ استَمَعُوا إلَى بَرنَابَا وَشَاوُلَ وَهُمَا يَتَحَدَّثَانِ عَنْ كُلِّ المُعجِزَاتِ وَالعَجَائِبِ الَّتِي صَنَعَهَا اللهُ بِوَاسِطَتِهِمَا بَيْنَ غَيْرِ اليَهُودِ.

13 وَبَعْدَ أنِ انتَهَيَا مِنَ الحَدِيثِ، قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ: «أيُّهَا الإخْوَةُ، اسْمَعُونِي. 14 لَقَدْ تَحَدَّثَ سِمْعَانُ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ أظْهَرَ اللهُ أوَّلًا نِعْمَةً لِغَيرِ اليَهُودِ بِأنِ اخْتَارَ مِنْهُمْ شَعْبًا لَهُ. 15 وَكَلَامُ الأنْبِيَاءِ يُوافِقُ كَلَامَهُ. فَكَمَا هُوَ مَكْتُوبٌ:

16 ‹بَعْدَ هَذَا سَأعُودُ،
وَسَأُعِيدُ بِنَاءَ بَيْتِ دَاوُدَ الَّذِي سَقَطَ.
سَأُعَيدُ بِنَاءَ خَرَائِبِهِ، وَسَأُقِيمُهُ.
17 لِكَي يَسْعَى إلَى الرَّبِّ بَقِيَّةُ البَشَرِ
وَجَمِيعُ الأُمَمِ الَّذِينَ دُعِيَ اسْمِي عَلَيْهِمْ.
يَقولُ الرَّبُّ
الَّذِي سَيُحَقِّقُ هَذَا كُلَّهُ.›[d]

18 ‹وَالرَّبُّ يَعْرِفُ هَذَا مُنْذُ الأزَلِ.›[e]

19 لِهَذَا فَإنِّي أرَى أنَّنَا لَا يَنْبَغِي أنْ نُزعِجَ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَلْتَفِتُونَ إلَى اللهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ اليَهُودِ. 20 بَلْ يَنْبَغِي أنْ نَكتُبَ إلَيْهِمْ طَالِبِينَ مِنْهُمْ أنْ يَمْتَنِعُوا عَنْ تَنَاوُلِ الطَّعَامِ الَّذِي تُنُجِّسَ بِتَقْديمِهِ لِلأصْنَامِ، وَعَنِ الزِّنَا، وَعَنْ أكلِ لَحْمِ الحَيَوَانَاتِ المَخنُوقَةِ وَالدَّمِ. 21 فَلِمُوسَى جَمَاعَتُهُ الَّتِي تَعِظُ بِشَرِيعَتِهِ فِي كُلِّ بَلدَةٍ مُنْذُ القَدِيمِ، وَشَريعَتُهُ تُقرَأُ فِي المَجَامِعِ كُلَّ سَبْتٍ.»

الرِّسَالَةُ إلَى المُؤمِنِينَ مِنْ غَيْرِ اليَهُود

22 فَقَرَّرَ الرُّسُلُ وَالشُّيُوخُ[f] مَعَ كُلِّ الكَنِيسَةِ أنْ يَختَارُوا بَعْضَ الرِّجَالِ مِنْ بَينِهِمْ، وَأنْ يُرسِلُوهُمْ إلَى أنطَاكِيَةَ مَعَ بُولُسَ وَبَرنَابَا. فَاختَارُوا يَهُوذَا الَّذِي يُدْعَى بَرْسَابَا، وَسِيلَا. وَهُمَا مِنَ القَادَةِ بَيْنَ الإخوَةِ. 23 وَأرسَلُوا الرِّسَالَةَ التَّالِيَةَ مَعَهُمْ:

تَحِيَّةٌ مِنَّا نَحْنُ الرُّسُلَ وَالشُّيُوخَ إخْوَتَكُمْ،

وَتَحِيَّاتُنَا إلَى الإخوَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ اليَهُودِ فِي أنطَاكِيَةَ وَسُورِيَّةَ وَكِيلِيكِيَّةَ.

24 لَقَدْ سَمِعْنَا أنَّ بَعْضًا مِنَ المُؤمِنِينَ جَاءُوا مِنْ عِندِنَا إلَيكُمْ دُونَ أيِّ تَفْوِيضٍ مِنَّا. وَسَمِعنَا أنَّهُمْ أزعَجُوكُمْ بِكَلَامِهِمْ وَبَلبَلُوا عُقُولَكُمْ. 25 وَلِهَذَا اتَّفَقنَا جَمِيعًا وَقَرَّرْنَا أنْ نَختَارَ بَعْضَ الرِّجَالِ وَنُرسِلَهُمْ إلَيكُمْ مَعَ أخَوَينَا الحَبِيبَينِ بَرنَابَا وَبُولُسَ، 26 اللَّذينِ خَاطَرَا بِحَيَاتِهِمَا مِنْ أجْلِ اسْمِ رَبِّنَا يَسُوعَ المَسِيحِ. 27 فَهَا نَحْنُ نُرسِلُ يَهُوذَا وَسِيلَا اللَّذَيْنِ سَيَقُولَانِ لَكُمْ مُحتَوَىْ هَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةِ نَفْسِهَا. 28 فَقَدِ استَحْسَنَ الرُّوحُ القُدُسُ وَنَحْنُ أنْ لَا نُثقِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا هُوَ أكْثَرُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الأُمُورِ الضَّرُورِيَّةِ:

29 لَا يَنْبَغِي أنْ تَتَنَاوَلُوا الطَّعَامَ المُقَدَّمَ لِلأوْثَانِ، وَالحَيَوَانَاتِ المَخنُوقَةَ وَالدَّمَ، وَأنْ تَبْتَعِدُوا عَنِ الزِّنَا.

فَإذَا حَفِظتُمْ أنْفُسَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الأُمُورِ، تُحسِنُونَ صُنْعًا.

عَافَاكُمُ اللهُ.

30 وَهَكَذَا انطَلَقَ بَرنَابَا وَبُولُسُ وَيَهُوذَا وَسِيلَا وَذَهَبُوا إلَى أنطَاكِيَةَ. وَجَمَعُوا جَمَاعَةَ المُؤمِنِينَ هُنَاكَ، وَسَلَّمُوا الرِّسَالَةَ. 31 فَلَمَّا قَرَأهَا المُؤمِنُونَ هُنَاكَ، ابتَهَجُوا كَثِيرًا بِالتَّشجِيعِ الَّذِي فِيهَا. 32 وَكَانَ يَهُوذَا وَسِيلَا نَبِيَّينِ، فَتَحَدَّثَا إلَى الإخوَةِ مُدَّةً طَوِيلَةً يُشَجِّعَانِهِمْ وَيُقَوِّيَانِهِمْ. 33 وَبَعْدَ أنْ أمضَيَا بَعْضَ الوَقْتِ هُنَاكَ، تَمَنَّى لَهُمَا الإخْوَةُ السَّلَامَ فِي عَودَتِهِمَا إلَى الَّذِينَ أرسَلُوهُمَا. 34 إلَّا أنَّ سِيلَا قَرَّرَ أنْ يَبْقَى هُنَاكَ. 35 أمَّا بُولُسُ وَبَرنَابَا فَأمضَيَا بَعْضَ الوَقْتِ فِي أنطَاكِيَةَ. وَكَانَا، هُمَا وَكَثيرونَ مَعَهُمَا، يُعَلِّمَانِ كَلِمَةَ الرَّبِّ وَيُبَشِّرَانِ بِهَا.

افتِرَاقُ بُولُسَ وَبَرنَابَا

36 وَبَعْدَ بِضعَةِ أيَّامٍ قَالَ بُولُسُ لِبَرنَابَا: «لِنَذهَبْ وَنَزُرِ الإخوَةَ فِي كُلِّ المُدُنِ الَّتِي أذَعْنَا فِيهَا كَلِمَةَ الرَّبِّ، وَلْنَرَ أحوَالَهُمْ.» 37 فَأرَادَ بَرنَابَا أنْ يُرَافِقَهُمَا يُوحَنَّا الَّذِي يُدْعَى مَرقُسَ. 38 لَكِنَّ بُولُسَ فَضَّلَ ألَّا يَأْخُذَا مَعَهُمَا مَنْ تَخَلَّى عَنهُمَا فِي بَمفِيلِيَّةَ وَلَمْ يُرَافِقْهُمَا فِي العَمَلِ. 39 فَحَدَثَ خِلَافٌ حَادٌّ بَيْنَهُمَا، فَافتَرَقَا. فَأخَذَ بَرنَابَا مَرقُسَ وَأبحَرَا إلَى قُبرُصَ. 40 بَيْنَمَا اخْتَارَ بُولُسُ سِيلَا وَغَادَرَا، بَعْدَ أنِ استَوْدَعَهُ الإخْوَةُ فِي عِنَايَةِ الرَّبِّ. 41 فَاجتَازَ بُولُسُ فِي سُورِيَّةَ وَكِيلِيكْيَةَ، مُقَوِّيًا الكَنَائِسَ الَّتِي هُنَاكَ.

El concilio en Jerusalén

15 Entonces algunos que venían de Judea enseñaban a los hermanos: Si no os circuncidáis conforme al rito de Moisés,(A) no podéis ser salvos. 2 Como Pablo y Bernabé tuviesen una discusión y contienda no pequeña con ellos, se dispuso que subiesen Pablo y Bernabé a Jerusalén, y algunos otros de ellos, a los apóstoles y a los ancianos, para tratar esta cuestión. 3 Ellos, pues, habiendo sido encaminados por la iglesia, pasaron por Fenicia y Samaria, contando la conversión de los gentiles; y causaban gran gozo a todos los hermanos. 4 Y llegados a Jerusalén, fueron recibidos por la iglesia y los apóstoles y los ancianos, y refirieron todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con ellos. 5 Pero algunos de la secta de los fariseos, que habían creído, se levantaron diciendo: Es necesario circuncidarlos, y mandarles que guarden la ley de Moisés.

6 Y se reunieron los apóstoles y los ancianos para conocer de este asunto. 7 Y después de mucha discusión, Pedro se levantó y les dijo: Varones hermanos, vosotros sabéis cómo ya hace algún tiempo que Dios escogió que los gentiles oyesen por mi boca la palabra del evangelio y creyesen.(B) 8 Y Dios, que conoce los corazones, les dio testimonio, dándoles el Espíritu Santo(C) lo mismo que a nosotros;(D) 9 y ninguna diferencia hizo entre nosotros y ellos, purificando por la fe sus corazones. 10 Ahora, pues, ¿por qué tentáis a Dios, poniendo sobre la cerviz de los discípulos un yugo que ni nuestros padres ni nosotros hemos podido llevar? 11 Antes creemos que por la gracia del Señor Jesús seremos salvos, de igual modo que ellos.

12 Entonces toda la multitud calló, y oyeron a Bernabé y a Pablo, que contaban cuán grandes señales y maravillas había hecho Dios por medio de ellos entre los gentiles. 13 Y cuando ellos callaron, Jacobo respondió diciendo: Varones hermanos, oídme. 14 Simón ha contado cómo Dios visitó por primera vez a los gentiles, para tomar de ellos pueblo para su nombre. 15 Y con esto concuerdan las palabras de los profetas, como está escrito:

16 Después de esto volveré

Y reedificaré el tabernáculo de David, que está caído;

Y repararé sus ruinas,

Y lo volveré a levantar,

17 Para que el resto de los hombres busque al Señor,

Y todos los gentiles, sobre los cuales es invocado mi nombre,

18 Dice el Señor, que hace conocer todo esto desde tiempos antiguos.(E)

19 Por lo cual yo juzgo que no se inquiete a los gentiles que se convierten a Dios, 20 sino que se les escriba que se aparten de las contaminaciones de los ídolos,(F) de fornicación,(G) de ahogado y de sangre.(H) 21 Porque Moisés desde tiempos antiguos tiene en cada ciudad quien lo predique en las sinagogas, donde es leído cada día de reposo.[a]

22 Entonces pareció bien a los apóstoles y a los ancianos, con toda la iglesia, elegir de entre ellos varones y enviarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé: a Judas que tenía por sobrenombre Barsabás, y a Silas, varones principales entre los hermanos; 23 y escribir por conducto de ellos: Los apóstoles y los ancianos y los hermanos, a los hermanos de entre los gentiles que están en Antioquía, en Siria y en Cilicia, salud. 24 Por cuanto hemos oído que algunos que han salido de nosotros, a los cuales no dimos orden, os han inquietado con palabras, perturbando vuestras almas, mandando circuncidaros y guardar la ley, 25 nos ha parecido bien, habiendo llegado a un acuerdo, elegir varones y enviarlos a vosotros con nuestros amados Bernabé y Pablo, 26 hombres que han expuesto su vida por el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 27 Así que enviamos a Judas y a Silas, los cuales también de palabra os harán saber lo mismo. 28 Porque ha parecido bien al Espíritu Santo, y a nosotros, no imponeros ninguna carga más que estas cosas necesarias: 29 que os abstengáis de lo sacrificado a ídolos, de sangre, de ahogado y de fornicación; de las cuales cosas si os guardareis, bien haréis. Pasadlo bien.

30 Así, pues, los que fueron enviados descendieron a Antioquía, y reuniendo a la congregación, entregaron la carta; 31 habiendo leído la cual, se regocijaron por la consolación. 32 Y Judas y Silas, como ellos también eran profetas, consolaron y confirmaron a los hermanos con abundancia de palabras. 33 Y pasando algún tiempo allí, fueron despedidos en paz por los hermanos, para volver a aquellos que los habían enviado. 34 Mas a Silas le pareció bien el quedarse allí. 35 Y Pablo y Bernabé continuaron en Antioquía, enseñando la palabra del Señor y anunciando el evangelio con otros muchos.

Pablo se separa de Bernabé, y comienza su segundo viaje misionero

36 Después de algunos días, Pablo dijo a Bernabé: Volvamos a visitar a los hermanos en todas las ciudades en que hemos anunciado la palabra del Señor, para ver cómo están. 37 Y Bernabé quería que llevasen consigo a Juan, el que tenía por sobrenombre Marcos; 38 pero a Pablo no le parecía bien llevar consigo al que se había apartado de ellos desde Panfilia,(I) y no había ido con ellos a la obra. 39 Y hubo tal desacuerdo entre ellos, que se separaron el uno del otro; Bernabé, tomando a Marcos, navegó a Chipre, 40 y Pablo, escogiendo a Silas, salió encomendado por los hermanos a la gracia del Señor, 41 y pasó por Siria y Cilicia, confirmando a las iglesias.

Una decisión bien pensada

15 Por esos días llegaron a Antioquía algunos hombres de la región de Judea. Ellos enseñaban a los seguidores de Jesús que debían circuncidarse, porque así lo ordenaba la ley de Moisés. Les enseñaban también que, si no se circuncidaban, Dios no los salvaría. 2 Pablo y Bernabé no estaban de acuerdo con eso, y discutieron con ellos. Por esa razón, los de la iglesia de Antioquía les pidieron a Pablo y a Bernabé que fueran a Jerusalén, y que trataran de resolver ese problema con los apóstoles y los líderes de la iglesia en esa ciudad. Pablo y Bernabé se pusieron en camino, y algunos otros seguidores los acompañaron.

3 En su camino a Jerusalén pasaron por las regiones de Fenicia y Samaria. Allí les contaron a los cristianos judíos que mucha gente no judía había decidido seguir a Dios. Al oír esta noticia, los cristianos judíos se alegraron mucho.

4 Pablo y Bernabé llegaron a Jerusalén. Allí fueron recibidos por los miembros de la iglesia, los apóstoles y los líderes. Luego Pablo y Bernabé les contaron todo lo que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos. 5 Pero algunos fariseos que se habían convertido en seguidores de Jesús, dijeron: «A los que han creído en Jesús, pero que no son judíos, debemos exigirles que obedezcan la ley de Moisés y se circunciden.»

6 Los apóstoles y los líderes de la iglesia se reunieron para tomar una decisión bien pensada. 7 Luego de una larga discusión, Pedro les dijo:

«Amigos míos, como ustedes saben, hace algún tiempo Dios me eligió para anunciar las buenas noticias de Jesús a los que no son judíos, para que ellos crean en él. 8 Y Dios, que conoce nuestros pensamientos, ha demostrado que también ama a los que no son judíos, pues les ha dado el Espíritu Santo lo mismo que a nosotros. 9 Dios no ha hecho ninguna diferencia entre ellos y nosotros, pues también a ellos les perdonó sus pecados cuando creyeron en Jesús.

10 »¿Por qué quieren ir en contra de lo que Dios ha hecho? ¿Por qué quieren obligar a esos seguidores de Jesús a obedecer leyes, que ni nuestros antepasados ni nosotros hemos podido obedecer? 11 Más bien, nosotros creemos que somos salvos gracias a que Jesús nos amó mucho, y también ellos lo creen.»

12 Todos se quedaron callados. Luego, escucharon también a Bernabé y a Pablo, quienes contaron las maravillas y los milagros que, por medio de ellos, Dios había hecho entre los no judíos.

13 Cuando terminaron de hablar, Santiago, el hermano de Jesús, les dijo a todos:

«Amigos míos, escúchenme. 14 Simón Pedro nos ha contado cómo Dios, desde un principio, trató bien a los que no son judíos, y los eligió para que también formaran parte de su pueblo. 15 Esto es lo mismo que Dios anunció en la Biblia por medio de los profetas:

16 “Yo soy el Señor su Dios,
y volveré de nuevo
para que vuelva a reinar
un descendiente de David.

17 Cuando eso pase,
gente de otros países
vendrá a mí,
y serán mis elegidos.

18 Yo soy el Señor su Dios.
Yo había prometido esto
desde hace mucho tiempo.”

19 »Los que no son judíos han decidido ser seguidores de Dios. Yo creo que no debemos obligarlos a obedecer leyes innecesarias. 20 Sólo debemos escribirles una carta y pedirles que no coman ninguna comida que haya sido ofrecida a los ídolos. Que tampoco coman carne de animales que hayan muerto ahogados, ni carne que todavía tenga sangre. Además, deberán evitar las relaciones sexuales que la ley de Moisés prohíbe. 21 Hay que recordar que, desde hace mucho tiempo, en esos mismos pueblos y ciudades se ha estado enseñando y predicando la ley de Moisés. Esto pasa cada sábado en nuestras sinagogas.»

La carta

22 Los apóstoles, los líderes y todos los miembros de la iglesia, decidieron elegir a algunos de ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía, junto con Pablo y Bernabé. Eligieron a Judas, a quien la gente también llamaba Barsabás, y a Silas. Estos dos eran líderes de la iglesia. 23 Con ellos mandaron esta carta:

28 »Al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros nos ha parecido bien no obligarlos a obedecer más que las siguientes reglas, que no podemos dejar de cumplir: 29 No coman carne de animales que hayan sido sacrificados en honor a los ídolos; no coman sangre ni carne de animales que todavía tengan sangre adentro, y eviten las relaciones sexuales que la ley de Moisés prohíbe. Si cumplen con esto, harán muy bien. Reciban nuestro cariñoso saludo.»

30 Entonces Bernabé, Pablo, Judas y Silas se fueron a Antioquía. Cuando llegaron allá, se reunieron con los miembros de la iglesia y les entregaron la carta. 31 Cuando la carta se leyó, todos en la iglesia se pusieron muy alegres, pues lo que decía los tranquilizaba. 32 Además, como Judas y Silas eran profetas, hablaron con los seguidores de Jesús, y los tranquilizaron y animaron mucho.

33 Después de pasar algún tiempo con los de la iglesia en Antioquía, los que habían venido de Jerusalén fueron despedidos con mucho cariño. 34-35 Pero Silas, Pablo y Bernabé se quedaron en Antioquía y, junto con muchos otros seguidores, enseñaban y anunciaban las buenas noticias del Señor Jesucristo.[a]

36 Tiempo después, Pablo le dijo a Bernabé: «Regresemos a todos los pueblos y ciudades donde hemos anunciado las buenas noticias, para ver cómo están los seguidores de Jesús.»

37 Bernabé quería que Juan Marcos los acompañara, 38 pero Pablo no estuvo de acuerdo. Y es que hacía algún tiempo, Juan Marcos los había abandonado en la región de Panfilia, pues no quiso seguir trabajando con ellos.

39 Pablo y Bernabé no pudieron ponerse de acuerdo, así que terminaron por separarse. Bernabé y Marcos tomaron un barco y se fueron a la isla de Chipre. 40 Por su parte, Pablo eligió a Silas como compañero. Luego, los miembros de la iglesia de Antioquía los despidieron, rogándole a Dios que no dejara de amarlos y cuidarlos. Entonces Pablo y Silas salieron de allí 41 y pasaron por las regiones de Siria y Cilicia, donde animaron a los miembros de las iglesias a seguir confiando en el Señor Jesús.

The Voice

15 Their peace was disturbed, however, when certain Judeans came with this teaching: “Unless you are circumcised according to Mosaic custom, you cannot be saved.” 2 Paul and Barnabas argued against this teaching and debated with the Judeans vehemently, so the church selected several people—including Paul and Barnabas—to travel to Jerusalem to dialogue about this issue with the apostles and elders there. 3 The church sent them on their way. They passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, stopping to report to the groups of believers there that outsiders were now being converted. This brought great joy to them all. 4 Upon arrival in Jerusalem, the church, the apostles, and the elders welcomed them warmly; and they reported all they had seen God do. 5 But there were some believers present who belonged to the sect of the Pharisees. They stood up and asserted,

Pharisees: No, this is not acceptable. These people must be circumcised, and we must require them to keep the whole Mosaic law.

6 The apostles and elders met privately to discuss how this issue should be resolved. 7 There was a lot of debate, and finally Peter stood up.

These debates give a glimpse of the cultural tensions present between Jewish and Gentile believers throughout the New Testament writings. The early Jewish believers still follow the traditional Jewish practices of Sabbath rest and kosher food. This is fine, until Jewish and Gentile Christians must share a table. How can they be truly unified as one church without being able to sit down together for a meal? This council affirms—under the influence of the Spirit’s work—that the outsiders may become Christians without becoming Jews first; but the outsiders should respect their Jewish brothers’ beliefs so they can fellowship together. The decision is a model for church unity: artificial hurdles should not be imposed for inclusion, but groups should willingly sacrifice their freedoms to promote unity in the church.

Peter: My brothers, you all know that in the early days of our movement, God decided that I should be the one through whom the first outsiders would hear the good news and become believers. 8 God knows the human heart, and He showed approval of their hearts by giving them the Holy Spirit just as He did for us. 9 In cleansing their hearts by faith, God has made no distinction between them and us. 10 So it makes no sense to me that some of you are testing God by burdening His disciples with a load that neither our forefathers nor we have been able to carry. 11 No, we all believe that we will be liberated through the grace of the Lord Jesus—they also will be rescued in the same way.

12 There was silence among them while Barnabas and Paul reported all the miraculous signs and wonders God had done through them among outsiders. 13 When they finished, James spoke.

James: My brothers, hear me. 14 Simon Peter reminded us how God first included outsiders in His favor, taking people from among them for His name. 15 This resonates with the words of the prophets:

16     “After this, I will return
        and rebuild the house of David, which has fallen into ruins.
    From its wreckage I will rebuild it;
17     So all the nations may seek the Eternal One—
        including every person among the outsiders who has been called by My name.”[a]
This is the word of the Lord, 18     who has been revealing these things since ancient times.[b]

19 So here is my counsel: we should not burden these outsiders who are turning to God. 20 We should instead write a letter, instructing them to abstain from four things: first, things associated with idol worship; second, sexual immorality; third, food killed by strangling; and fourth, blood. 21 My reason for these four exceptions is that in every city there are Jewish communities where, for generations, the laws of Moses have been proclaimed; and on every Sabbath, Moses is read in synagogues everywhere.

22 This seemed like a good idea to the apostles, the elders, and the entire church. They commissioned men from among them and sent them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent two prominent men among the believers, Judas (also known as Barsabbas) and Silas, 23 to deliver this letter:

The brotherhood, including the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, send greetings to the outsider believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. 24 We have heard that certain people from among us—without authorization from us—have said things that, in turn, upset you and unsettle your minds. 25 We have decided unanimously to choose and send two representatives, along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul 26 who, as you know, have risked their lives for our Lord Jesus the Anointed. 27 These representatives, Judas and Silas, will confirm verbally what you will read in this letter. 28 It has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to keep you free from all burdens except these four: 29 abstain from anything sacrificed to idols, from blood, from food killed by strangling, and from sexual immorality. Avoid these things, and you will be just fine. Farewell.

30 So the men were sent to Antioch. When they arrived, they gathered the community together and read the letter. 31 The community rejoiced at the resolution to the controversy. 32 Judas and Silas, being prophets themselves, offered lengthy encouragements to strengthen the believers. 33 After some time there, their mission was complete; so the leaders in Antioch released Judas and Silas to return to Jerusalem with a blessing of peace. [34 But after some thought, Silas decided to remain behind.][c] 35 Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, where they teamed with many others to teach and preach the message of the Lord.

36 Some days later, Paul proposed another journey to Barnabas.

Paul: Let’s return and visit the believers in each city where we preached the Lord’s message last time to see how they’re doing.

37 Barnabas agreed and wanted to bring John Mark along, 38 but Paul felt that was a mistake since John Mark had abandoned them in Pamphylia and hadn’t finished the previous mission. 39 Their difference of opinion was so heated that they decided not to work together anymore. Barnabas took John Mark and sailed to Cyprus, 40 while Paul chose Silas as his companion. The believers in Antioch commissioned him for this work, entrusting him to the grace of the Lord. 41 They traveled through Syria and Cilicia to strengthen the churches there.
