بُطرُسُ وَكَرنِيليُوس
10 وَكَانَ فِي مَدِينَةِ قَيصَرِيَّةَ رَجُلٌ اسْمُهُ كَرنِيليُوسُ، وَهُوَ ضَابِطٌ رومَانِيٌّ[a] فِي كَتِيبَةٍ يُطلَقُ عَلَيْهَا الكَتِيبَةَ الإيطَالِيَّةَ. 2 كَانَ كَرنِيليُوسُ تَقِيًّا يَخَافُ اللهَ هُوَ وَعَائِلَتُهُ كُلُّهَا، وَكَانَ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِسَخَاءٍ عَلَى الفُقَرَاءِ، وَيُصَلِّي إلَى اللهِ دَائِمًا. 3 وَنَحْوَ السَّاعَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ مِنْ بَعدِ الظُّهرِ، رَأى كَرنِيليُوسُ فِي رُؤيَا مَلَاكًا مِنْ عِندِ اللهِ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَقُولُ لَهُ: «يَا كَرنِيليُوسُ!»
4 فَحَدَّقَ كَرنِيليُوسُ فِيهِ بِخَوفٍ وَقَالَ: «مَا الأمْرُ يَا سَيِّدُ؟» فَقَالَ لَهُ المَلَاكُ: «صَلَوَاتُكَ وَصَدَقَاتُكَ لَيْسَتْ خَافِيَةً عَنِ اللهِ. 5 وَالْآنَ أرسِلْ رِجَالًا إلَى بَلْدَةِ يَافَا وَاسْتَدْعِ رَجُلًا اسْمُهُ سِمْعَانُ، وَيُدْعَى أيْضًا بُطْرُسَ. 6 إنَّهُ ضَيفٌ عَلَى دَبَّاغٍ اسْمُهُ سِمْعَانُ، بَيتُهُ عِنْدَ البَحْرِ.»
7 فَلَمَّا مَضَى المَلَاكُ الَّذِي كَلَّمَهُ، استَدْعَى اثْنَيْنِ مِنْ خُدَّامِهِ وَجُندِيًّا تَقِيًّا[b] مِنْ مُرَافِقِيهِ، 8 وَشَرَحَ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَا حَصَلَ، وَأرسَلَهُمَا إلَى يَافَا.
9 وَفِي اليَوْمِ التَّالِي، وَبَيْنَمَا كَانُوا يَقْتَرِبُونَ مِنَ البَلدَةِ، صَعِدَ بُطرُسُ إلَى السَّطحِ عِنْدَ الظُّهرِ تَقْرِيبًا لِيُصَلِّيَ. 10 فَأحَسَّ بِالجُوعِ وَأرَادَ أنْ يَأْكُلَ. وَبَيْنَمَا كَانُوا يُعِدُّونَ الطَّعَامَ، رَاحَ فِي حَالَةِ سُبَاتٍ. 11 وَرَأى السَّمَاءَ مَفتُوحَةً، وَرَأى شَيْئًا يُشْبِهُ قِطْعَةَ قُمَاشٍ كَبِيرَةً مُدَلَّاةً مِنْ أطرَافِهَا الأرْبَعَةِ إلَى الأرْضِ. 12 وَكَانَ فِيهَا كُلُّ أنْوَاعِ بَهَائِمِ الأرْضِ وَزَوَاحِفِهَا وَطُيُورِ السَّمَاءِ. 13 ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ صَوْتٌ: «هَيَّا يَا بُطرُسُ، اذبَحْ وَكُلْ!»
14 فَقَالَ بُطرُسُ: «لَنْ أفعَلَ هَذَا يَا رَبُّ! فَأنَا لَمْ آكُلْ يَومًا شَيْئًا مُحَرَّمًا أوْ نَجِسًا.»
15 فَقَالَ لَهُ الصَّوْتُ مَرَّةً ثَانِيَةً: «مَا طّهَّرَهُ اللهُ، لَا تُحَرِّمْهُ أنْتَ!» 16 وَحَدَثَ هَذَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ. وَفِي الحَالِ رُفِعَ ذَلِكَ الشِّيءُ إلَى السَّمَاءِ.
17 فَرَاحَ بُطرُسُ يُفَكِّرُ تَفْكِيرًا عَمِيقًا فِي مَعنَى الرُّؤيَا الَّتِي رَآهَا. وَفِي هَذِهِ الأثنَاءِ، كَانَ الرِّجَالُ الَّذِينَ أرسَلَهُمْ كَرنِيليُوسُ يَسألُونَ عَنْ بِيتِ سِمعَانَ، وَصَارُوا وَاقِفِينَ بِالبَابِ. 18 فَنَادُوا يَسألُونَ إنْ كَانَ سِمْعَانُ الَّذِي يُدْعَىْ بُطْرُسَ ضَيفًا هُنَاكَ.
19 وَبَيْنَمَا كَانَ بُطرُسُ مَا يَزَالُ يُفَكِّرُ فِي الرُّؤيَا، قَالَ لَهُ الرُّوحُ: «هَا إنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ رِجَالٍ يَبْحَثُونَ عَنْكَ، 20 فَانْهَضْ وَانزِلْ إلَى الطَّابِقِ السُّفلِيِّ، وَاذْهَبْ مَعَهُم دُونَ أيِّ تَرَدُّدٍ، لِأنِّي أنَا أرسَلْتُهُمْ.» 21 فَنَزَلَ بُطرُسُ وَقَالَ لِلرِّجَالِ: «أنَا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي تَبْحَثُونَ عَنْهُ. فَلِمَاذَا جِئتُمْ؟»
22 قَالُوا: «أرسَلَنَا الضَّابِطُ كَرنِيليُوسُ. وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ يَخَافُ اللهَ، وَيَحْتَرِمُهُ كُلُّ اليَهُودِ. وَقَدْ أمَرَهُ مَلَاكٌ مُقَدَّسٌ أنْ يَدْعُوَكَ إلَى بَيْتِهِ، وَيَسْمَعَ مَا لَدَيكَ مِنْ كَلَامٍ.»
23 فَدَعَاهُمْ بُطرُسُ لِلدُّخُولِ وَاسْتَضَافَهُمْ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيلَةِ. وَفِي اليَوْمِ التَّالِي استَعَدَّ وَذَهَبَ مَعَهُمْ. وَذَهَبَ مَعَهُ بَعْضُ الإخوَةِ مِنْ بَلْدَةِ يَافَا. 24 وَفِي اليَوْمِ التَّالِي، وَصَلَ إلَى مَدِينَةِ قَيصَرِيَّةَ. وَكَانَ كَرنِيليُوسُ فِي انتِظَارِهِمْ وَقَدْ جَمَعَ أقَارِبَهُ وَأصدِقَاءَهُ المُقَرَّبِينَ.
25 وَعِنْدَمَا دَخَلَ بُطرُسُ، استَقْبَلَهُ كَرنِيليُوسُ وَألقَى بِنَفْسِهِ عِنْدَ قَدَمَيهِ وَسَجَدَ لَهُ. 26 لَكِنَّ بُطْرُسَ أقَامَهُ وَقَالَ لَهُ: «انْهَضْ! مَا أنَا إلَّا بَشَرٌ!» 27 وَدَخَلَ بُطرُسُ وَهُوَ يَتَحَدَّثُ إلَيْهِ، فَوَجَدَ أشخَاصًا كَثِيرِينَ مُجتَمِعِينَ. 28 فَقَالَ لَهُمْ بُطرُسُ: «أنْتُمْ تَعْرِفُونَ أنَّهُ مُحَرَّمٌ عَلَى اليَهُودِيِّ أنْ يُخَالِطَ أوْ يَزُورَ أحَدًا غَيْرَ يَهُودِيٍّ. لَكِنَّ اللهَ أرَانِي أنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أنْ أعتَبِرَ أيَّ إنْسَانٍ نَجِسًا. 29 فَلَمَّا دَعَوتُمُونِي، جِئتُ دُونَ أيِّ اعتِرَاضٍ. وَلِهَذَا فَإنِّي أسألُكُمْ، لِمَاذَا أرْسَلْتُمْ فِي طَلَبِي؟»
30 فَقَالَ كَرنِيليُوسُ: «قَبْلَ أرْبَعَةِ أيَّامٍ كُنْتُ فِي بَيْتِي أُصَلِّي فِي مِثْلِ هَذَا الوَقْتِ، أيِ السَّاعَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ. وَفَجْأةً وَقَفَ رَجُلٌ أمَامِي بِمَلَابِسَ بَرَّاقَةٍ، 31 وَقَالَ: ‹يَا كَرنِيليُوسُ، سَمِعَ اللهُ صَلَاتَكَ، وَلَمْ تَخْفَ عَنْهُ صَدَقَاتُكَ. 32 فَأرسِلْ رِجَالًا إلَى بَلْدَةِ يَافَا، وَادعُ سِمعَانَ الَّذِي يُدْعَى بُطْرُسَ لِلمَجِيءِ إلَى هُنَا. فَهُوَ نَازِلٌ فِي بَيْتِ سِمعَانَ الدَّبَّاغِ قُرْبَ البَحْرِ.› 33 فَأرسَلْتُ فَوْرًا فِي طَلَبِكَ. وَأنْتَ تَلَطَّفتَ بِالمَجِيءِ. فَهَا نَحْنُ جَمِيعًا فِي حَضْرَةِ اللهِ لِنَسمَعَ مَا أمَرَكَ بِهِ الرَّبُّ بِأنْ تَقُولَهُ.»
بُطرُسُ يَتَحَدَّثُ فِي بَيْتِ كَرنِيليُوس
34 ثُمَّ بَدَأ بُطرُسُ يَتَحَدَّثُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «لَقَدْ فَهِمتُ الآنَ تَمَامًا أنَّ اللهَ لَا يُمَيِّزُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ، 35 بَلْ إنَّهُ يَقْبَلُ كُلَّ مَنْ يَتَّقِيهِ وَيَفْعَلُ الصَّوَابَ مِنْ أيِّ شَعْبٍ كَانَ. 36 وَهَذِهِ هِيَ الرِّسَالَةُ الَّتِي أرسَلَهَا لِبَنِي إسْرَائِيلَ، مُنَادِيًا بِبِشَارَةِ السَّلَامِ مِنْ خِلَالِ يَسُوعَ المَسِيحِ، الَّذِي هُوَ رَبُّ كُلِّ البَشَرِ.
37 «فَأنْتُمْ تَعْرِفُونَ مَا حَدَثَ فِي كُلِّ اليَهُودِيَّةِ، بَدءًا مِنَ الجَلِيلِ بَعْدَ المَعمُودِيَّةِ الَّتِي نَادَى بِهَا يُوحَنَّا. 38 وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُمْ عَنْ يَسُوعَ النَّاصِرِيِّ وَكَيْفَ أنَّ اللهَ مَسَحَهُ بِالرُّوحِ القُدُسِ وَبِقُوَّةٍ. وَتَعْرِفُونَ كَيْفَ أنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَجَوَّلُ فَاعِلًا الخَيْرَ وَشَافِيًا كُلَّ الَّذِينَ تَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ إبْلِيسُ، لِأنَّ اللهَ كَانَ مَعَهُ.
39 «وَنَحْنُ شُهُودٌ لِكُلِّ مَا فَعَلَهُ فِي دِيَارِ اليَهُودِ وَفِي القُدْسِ. وَقَدْ قَتَلُوهُ بِأنْ عَلَّقُوهُ عَلَى خَشَبَةٍ. 40 لَكِنَّ اللهَ أقَامَهُ وَأظْهَرَهُ فِي اليَوْمِ الثَّالِثِ. 41 وَهُوَ لَمْ يَظْهَرْ لِلْجَمِيعِ، بَلْ ظَهَرَ لِشُهُودٍ اخْتَارَهُمُ اللهُ مُسْبَقًا. فَقَدْ ظَهَرَ لَنَا نَحْنُ الَّذِينَ أكَلنَا وَشَرِبنَا مَعَهُ بَعْدَ أنْ قَامَ مِنَ المَوْتِ.
42 «وَأمَرَنَا بِأنْ نُبَشِّرَ النَّاسَ وَنَشهَدَ أنَّهُ هُوَ الَّذِي عَيَّنَهُ اللهُ لِكَي يَدِينَ الأحيَاءَ وَالأمْوَاتَ. 43 وَكُلُّ الأنْبِيَاءِ يَشْهَدُونَ بِإنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ يُؤمِنُ بِهِ يَنَالُ غُفرَانَ الخَطَايَا بِاسْمِهِ.»
الرُّوحُ القُدُسُ يَحِلُّ عَلَى غَيْرِ اليَهُود
44 وَبَيْنَمَا كَانَ بُطرُسُ مَا يَزَالُ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِهَذِهِ الأُمُورِ، حَلَّ الرُّوحُ القُدُسُ عَلَى كُلِّ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَسْمَعُونَ الرِّسَالَةَ. 45 فَدُهِشَ المُؤمِنُونَ اليَهُودُ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مَعَ بُطْرُسَ، لِأنَّ عَطِيَّةَ الرُّوحِ القُدُسِ قَدِ انسَكَبَتْ عَلَى غَيْرِ اليَهُودِ أيْضًا. 46 فَقَدْ سَمِعُوهُمْ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِلُغَاتٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ وَيُسَبِّحُونَ اللهَ. حينَئِذٍ قَالَ بُطرُسُ: 47 «أيَقْدِرُ أحَدٌ أنْ يَمْنَعَ المَاءَ عَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ النَّاسِ لِكَي يَتَعَمَّدُوا؟ فَهُمْ قَدْ قَبِلُوا الرُّوحَ القُدُسَ مِثْلَنَا.» 48 فَأمَرَهُمْ بِأنْ يَتَعَمَّدُوا بِاسْمِ يَسُوعَ المَسِيحِ، ثُمَّ طَلَبُوا مِنْهُ أنْ يَبْقَى مَعَهُمْ عِدَّةَ أيَّامٍ.

Un angelo appare a Cornelio
10 A Cesarèa viveva Cornelio, un centurione che comandava una compagnia chiamata «Italica». 2 Questʼuomo era timorato di Dio e molto pio, come tutta la sua famiglia. Faceva molte elemosine e pregava continuamente. 3 Un giorno, verso le tre del pomeriggio, Cornelio ebbe una visione: vide chiaramente un angelo di Dio venirgli incontro.
«Cornelio!» lo chiamò lʼangelo.
4 «Che vuoi, Signore?» chiese lʼaltro tutto spaventato.
Lʼangelo rispose: «Le tue preghiere e le tue elemosine non sono passate inosservate a Dio! 5-6 Ora manda qualcuno a Giaffa a chiamare un certo Simon Pietro. Alloggia presso quel tale Simone, che lavora il cuoio e ha una casa in riva al mare».
7 Non appena lʼangelo se ne fu andato Cornelio chiamò due suoi domestici e un soldato che credeva in Dio, uno della sua guardia del corpo e, 8 dopo aver raccontato loro lʼaccaduto, li mandò a Giaffa.
9-10 Il giorno dopo, mentre quelli erano in viaggio e sʼavvicinavano alla città, Pietro salì sul terrazzo di casa per pregare. Era mezzogiorno e aveva fame. Mentre preparavano il pranzo, Pietro fu rapito in estasi. 11 Vide il cielo aperto, da cui scendeva qualcosa come un grande lenzuolo che, tenuto per i quattro capi, sʼabbassava verso terra. 12 Dentro cʼerano diversi tipi di animali, di rettili e di uccelli (vietati ai Giudei come cibo).
13 Una voce gli disse: «Pietro, àlzati, ammazza e mangia tutto quello che vuoi!»
14 «No davvero, Signore!» rispose Pietro, «In tutta la mia vita non ho mai mangiato degli animali del genere, perché è proibito dalle nostre leggi ebraiche».
15 La voce parlò di nuovo: «Non chiamare impuro ciò che Dio ha dichiarato puro!»
16 La visione si ripeté per tre volte. Poi il lenzuolo fu ritirato di nuovo in cielo. 17 Pietro era molto perplesso. Che cosa significava quella visione?
Proprio allora gli uomini, mandati da Cornelio, dopo aver chiesto della casa di Simone, si presentarono alla porta e 18 domandarono se abitava lì un certo Simon Pietro.
19 Pietro stava ancora ripensando alla visione, quando lo Spirito Santo gli disse: «Ci sono tre uomini che ti cercano. 20 Scendi e vaʼ con loro. Non farti scrupolo, perché li ho mandati io da te».
21 Così Pietro scese incontro agli uomini: «Sono io quello che cercate», disse. «Qual è la ragione della vostra visita?»
22 Allora gli parlarono del centurione romano Cornelio, uomo buono, timorato di Dio e ben visto dai Giudei.
«Un angelo gli ha ordinato di farti chiamare a casa sua», aggiunsero, «per ascoltare quello che gli dirai».
Pietro e Cornelio
23 Allora Pietro li fece entrare e li ospitò per la notte. Il giorno dopo, accompagnato da alcuni credenti di Giaffa, Pietro si mise in viaggio con gli uomini di Cornelio.
24 Lʼindomani arrivarono a Cesarèa. Cornelio li stava aspettando e aveva riunito in casa sua i parenti e gli amici più intimi. 25 Mentre Pietro stava per entrare in casa, Cornelio gli andò incontro e si gettò ai suoi piedi, in adorazione.
26 Ma Pietro lo rialzò e disse: «Àlzati, io non sono un dio, ma un uomo come te!»
27 Allora Cornelio si alzò, parlarono per un poʼ, poi entrarono insieme dove erano riuniti gli altri.
28 Pietro disse loro: «Voi ben sapete che è contro la nostra legge che un Giudeo abbia relazioni con uno straniero, e che entri in casa sua. Ma Dio mi ha insegnato a non considerare nessuno impuro o profano. 29 Perciò, quando sono stato mandato a chiamare, sono venuto senza fare storie. Ora dimmi, che cosa vuoi?»
30 «Quattro giorni fa stavo pregando, come faccio di solito a questʼora del pomeriggio», spiegò Cornelio, «quando improvvisamente è apparso davanti a me un uomo, che indossava una veste splendente. 31 Mi ha detto: Cornelio, Dio ha udito le tue preghiere e le tue elemosine non gli sono passate inosservate! 32 Manda qualcuno a Giaffa a chiamare Simon Pietro, che abita nella casa di Simone, quello che lavora il cuoio, giù sulla spiaggia. 33 Allora ti ho mandato a chiamare subito, e tu hai fatto bene a venire così in fretta! Ed ora eccoci qui, alla presenza di Dio, per ascoltare ciò che il Signore ti ha ordinato di dirci».
34 Allora Pietro rispose: «Devo riconoscere che Dio non fa distinzioni fra le persone. Non favorisce soltanto i Giudei. 35 Egli infatti è ben disposto verso tutti quelli che credono in lui e agiscono secondo la sua volontà, senza badare a che popolo appartengono. 36-37 Sono sicuro che tu hai sentito parlare del Vangelo per il popolo dʼIsraele, e cioè che cʼè pace con Dio per mezzo di Gesù, il Messia, che è il Signore di tutta la creazione. Questa notizia si è sparsa per tutta la Giudea, cominciando dalla Galilea con Giovanni Battista. 38 Senzʼaltro saprai anche che Gesù di Nazaret fu unto da Dio con lo Spirito Santo e con la sua potenza, e che andava in giro facendo del bene e risanando tutti coloro che erano sotto il potere del diavolo, perché Dio era con lui.
39 Noi apostoli siamo testimoni di tutto ciò che Gesù ha fatto in Israele ed a Gerusalemme, dove lo hanno ucciso, mettendolo in croce. 40-41 Ma Dio lo ha risuscitato dopo tre giorni ed ha fatto in modo che apparisse, non a tutto il popolo, ma a dei testimoni che aveva scelto già da prima, cioè a noi, che abbiamo mangiato e bevuto con lui dopo la sua resurrezione. 42 Poi Gesù ci ha mandato a predicare il Vangelo dappertutto ed a testimoniare che Dio lo ha eletto giudice di tutti, sia dei morti che dei vivi. 43 Tutti i profeti hanno scritto di Gesù ed hanno detto che chiunque crede in lui riceverà il perdono dei peccati, per mezzo del suo nome».
44 Mentre Pietro stava ancora parlando, lo Spirito Santo scese sopra tutti quelli che ascoltavano. 45 Come restarono stupiti i Giudei venuti con Pietro nel constatare che il dono dello Spirito Santo era concesso ai pagani! 46-47 Ma non avevano dubbi sulla realtà della cosa, perché li udivano parlare in lingue e lodare di Dio.
Allora Pietro chiese: «Cʼè qualcuno che si oppone al battesimo di queste persone, ora che hanno ricevuto lo Spirito Santo come noi?» 48 Poi ordinò che fossero battezzati nel nome di Gesù, il Messia. Dopo di ciò, Cornelio e gli altri lo pregarono di restare con loro ancora per qualche giorno.

Cornelius Sends a Delegation
10 There was a certain man in (A)Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian [a]Regiment, 2 (B)a devout man and one who (C)feared God with all his household, who gave [b]alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. 3 About [c]the ninth hour of the day (D)he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?”
So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 5 Now (E)send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 6 He is lodging with (F)Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. (G)He[d] will tell you what you must do.” 7 And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. 8 So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.
Peter’s Vision
9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, (H)Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about [e]the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and (I)saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”
14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! (J)For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, (K)“What God has [f]cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.
Summoned to Caesarea
17 Now while Peter [g]wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate. 18 And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there.
19 While Peter thought about the vision, (L)the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you. 20 (M)Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”
21 Then Peter went down to the men [h]who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?”
22 And they said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and (N)has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.” 23 Then he invited them in and lodged them.
On the next day Peter went away with them, (O)and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
Peter Meets Cornelius
24 And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, (P)“Stand up; I myself am also a man.” 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 28 Then he said to them, “You know how (Q)unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But (R)God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 29 Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?”
30 So Cornelius said, [i]“Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, (S)a man stood before me (T)in bright clothing, 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, (U)your prayer has been heard, and (V)your [j]alms are remembered in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. [k]When he comes, he will speak to you.’ 33 So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.”
Preaching to Cornelius’ Household
34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: (W)“In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But (X)in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is (Y)accepted by Him. 36 The word which God sent to the [l]children of Israel, (Z)preaching peace through Jesus Christ—(AA)He is Lord of all— 37 that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and (AB)began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 38 how (AC)God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who (AD)went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, (AE)for God was with Him. 39 And we are (AF)witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom [m]they (AG)killed by hanging on a tree. 40 Him (AH)God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 41 (AI)not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us (AJ)who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 42 And (AK)He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify (AL)that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge (AM)of the living and the dead. 43 (AN)To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, (AO)whoever believes in Him will receive (AP)remission[n] of sins.”
The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, (AQ)the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 (AR)And [o]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, (AS)because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit (AT)just as we have?” 48 (AU)And he commanded them to be baptized (AV)in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
