Giudizio riassuntivo su Sedecia
37 Sedecìa figlio di Giosia divenne re al posto di Conìa figlio di Ioiakìm; Nabucodònosor re di Babilonia lo nominò re nel paese di Giuda. 2 Ma né lui né i suoi ministri né il popolo del paese ascoltarono le parole che il Signore aveva pronunziate per mezzo del profeta Geremia.
3 Il re Sedecìa inviò allora Iucàl figlio di Selemia e il sacerdote Sofonia figlio di Maasià dal profeta Geremia per dirgli: «Prega per noi il Signore nostro Dio».
4 Geremia intanto andava e veniva in mezzo al popolo e non era stato ancora messo in prigione.
5 Però l'esercito del faraone era uscito dall'Egitto e i Caldei, che assediavano Gerusalemme, appena ne avevano avuto notizia, si erano allontanati da Gerusalemme.
6 Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta Geremia: 7 «Dice il Signore Dio di Israele: Riferite al re di Giuda, che vi ha mandati da me per consultarmi: Ecco l'esercito del faraone, uscito in vostro aiuto, ritornerà nel suo paese d'Egitto; 8 i Caldei ritorneranno, combatteranno contro questa città, la prenderanno e la daranno alle fiamme».
9 Dice il Signore: «Non illudetevi pensando: Certo i Caldei si allontaneranno da noi, perché non se ne andranno. 10 Anche se riusciste a battere tutto l'esercito dei Caldei che combattono contro di voi, e ne rimanessero solo alcuni feriti, costoro sorgerebbero ciascuno dalla sua tenda e darebbero alle fiamme questa città».
11 Quando l'esercito dei Caldei si allontanò da Gerusalemme a causa dell'esercito del faraone, 12 Geremia uscì da Gerusalemme per andare nella terra di Beniamino a prendervi una parte di eredità tra i suoi parenti.
13 Ma, quando fu alla porta di Beniamino, dove era un incaricato del servizio di guardia chiamato Ieria figlio di Selemia, figlio di Anania, costui arrestò il profeta Geremia dicendo: «Tu passi ai Caldei!». 14 Geremia rispose: «E' falso! Io non passo ai Caldei»; ma egli non gli diede retta. E così Ieria prese Geremia e lo condusse dai capi. 15 I capi erano sdegnati contro Geremia, lo percossero e lo gettarono in prigione nella casa di Giònata lo scriba, che avevano trasformato in un carcere. 16 Geremia entrò in una cisterna sotterranea a volta e rimase là molti giorni.
17 Il re Sedecìa mandò a prenderlo e lo interrogò in casa sua, di nascosto: «C'è qualche parola da parte del Signore?». Geremia rispose: «Sì» e precisò: «Tu sarai dato in mano al re di Babilonia».
18 Geremia poi disse al re Sedecìa: «Quale colpa ho commesso contro di te, i tuoi ministri e contro questo popolo, perché mi abbiate messo in prigione? 19 E dove sono i vostri profeti, che vi predicevano: Il re di Babilonia non verrà contro di voi e contro questo paese? 20 Ora, ascolta, re mio signore; la mia supplica ti giunga gradita. Non rimandarmi nella casa di Giònata lo scriba, perché io non vi muoia».
21 Il re Sedecìa comandò di custodire Geremia nell'atrio della prigione e gli fu data ogni giorno una focaccia di pane proveniente dalla via dei Fornai, finché non fu esaurito tutto il pane in città.
Così Geremia rimase nell'atrio della prigione.

37 وَمَلَكَ المَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا بْنُ يُوشِيَّا مَكَانَ كُنْيَاهُو بْنِ يَهُويَاقِيمَ. وَهُوَ الَّذِي عَيَّنَهُ نَبُوخَذْنَاصَّرُ مَلِكًا فِي أرْضِ يَهُوذَا. 2 وَلَمْ يَسْتَمِعْ هُوَ وَخُدَّامُهُ وَشَعْبُ الأرْضِ لِكَلَامِ اللهِ الَّذِي قَالَهُ عَلَى فَمِ إرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ.
3 وَأرْسَلَ المَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا يَهُوخَلَ بْنَ شَلَمْيَا وَصَفَنْيَا بْنَ مَعَسِيَّا الكَاهِنِ إلَى إرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ بِهَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةِ: «صَلِّ لِأجْلِنَا إلَى إلَهِنَا.» 4 وَكَانَ إرْمِيَا يَتَحَرَّكُ بِحُرِّيَّةٍ وَسطَ الشَّعْبِ فِي ذَلِكَ الوَقْتِ، إذْ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَدْ وُضِعَ فِي السِّجْنِ بَعْدُ. 5 وَكَانَ جَيْشُ فِرعَوْنَ قَدْ خَرَجَ مِنْ مِصْرٍ، وَالبَابِلِيُّونَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يُحَاصِرُونَ مَدِينَةَ القُدْسِ قَدْ سَمِعُوا بِمَا عَمِلَهُ جَيْشُ فِرعَوْنَ، وَلِذَا تَرَكُوا مَوقِعَهُمْ عِنْدَ مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ.
6 وَجَاءَتْ كَلِمَةُ اللهِ إلَى إرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ فَقَالَ: 7 «هَذَا هُوَ مَا يَقُولُهُ اللهُ، إلَهُ إسْرَائِيلَ: هَذَا مَا تَقُولَانِهِ – يَا يَهُوخَلُ وَصَفَنْيَا – إلَى مَلِكِ يَهُوذَا: ‹جَيْشُ فِرعَوْنَ الَّذِي خَرَجَ لِيُسَاعِدَكَ سَيَعُودُ إلَى أرْضِهِ مِصْرٍ. 8 وَالبَابِلِيُّونَ سَيَرْجِعُونَ وَيُحَارِبُونَ هَذِهِ المَدِينَةَ. سَيَسْتَوْلُونَ عَلَيْهَا وَيُحْرِقُونَهَا بِالنَّارِ.› 9 هَذَا هُوَ مَا يَقُولُهُ اللهُ: ‹لَا تَخْدَعُوا أنْفُسَكُمْ فَتَقُولُوا: سَيَرْحَلُ البَابِلِيُّونَ بِلَا شَكٍّ، لِأنَّهُمْ لَنْ يَرْحَلُوا. 10 وَحَتَّى لَوْ ضَرَبُوا كُلَّ جَيْشِ البَابِلِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ يُحَارِبُونَكُمْ، فَلَمْ يَبْقَ سِوَى رِجَالٍ جَرحَى فِي خَيَامِهِمْ، فَإنَّهُمْ سَيَقُومُونَ وَيُحْرِقُونَ هَذِهِ المَدِينَةَ.›»
11 وَعِنْدَمَا تَرَكَ جَيْشُ البَابِلِيِّينَ مَوقِعَهُ عِنْدَ مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ بِسَبَبِ اقتِرَابِ جَيْشِ فِرعَوْنَ، 12 أرَادَ إرْمِيَا الخُرُوجَ مِنَ مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ إلَى أرْضِ بَنْيَامِينَ، لِيَأْخُذَ حِصَّتَهُ مِنَ الأرْضِ مَعَ بَاقِي الشَّعْبِ هُنَاكَ. 13 وَعِنْدَمَا جَاءَ إلَى بَوَّابَةِ بَنْيَامِينَ كَانَ هُنَاكَ حَارِسٌ يُدْعَى يَرْئِيَّا بْنَ شَلَمْيَا بْنِ حَنَنِيَّا. قَبَضَ هَذَا عَلَى إرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ، فَقَالَ: «أنْتَ تُرِيدُ الِانْضِمَامَ إلَى البَابِلِيِّينَ!»
14 فَقَالَ إرْمِيَا لِيَرْئِيَّا: «هَذَا كَذِبٌ، فَأنَا لَنْ أنضَمَّ إلَى البَابِلِيِّينَ.» وَلَكِنَّ يَرْئِيَّا لَمْ يَسْمَعْ لَهُ. وَلِذَا قَبَضَ يَرْئِيَّا عَلَى إرْمِيَا وَأحضَرَهُ إلَى الرُّؤَسَاءِ. 15 فَغَضِبَ الرُّؤَسَاءُ عَلَى إرْمِيَا وَضَرَبُوهُ وَحَبَسُوهُ فِي بَيْتِ يُونَاثَانَ الكَاتِبِ، لِأنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَدْ حَوَّلُوا بَيْتَهُ إلَى سِجنٍ. 16 وَلَمَّا أتَى إرْمِيَا إلَى الزَّنَازِينِ، بَقِيَ هُنَاكَ أيَّامًا كَثِيرَةً.
17 وَأرْسَلَ المَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا وَأحضَرَهُ إلَيْهِ، وَاستَجْوَبَهُ المَلِكُ فِي بَيْتِ المَلِكِ سِرًّا، فَقَالَ: «هَلْ هُنَاكَ كَلِمَةٌ مِنَ اللهِ؟»
فَأجَابَ إرْمِيَا: «نَعَمْ، هُنَاكَ كَلِمَةٌ: سَتُسَلَّمُ إلَى يَدِ مَلِكِ بَابِلَ.» 18 ثُمَّ قَالَ إرْمِيَا لِلمَلِكِ صِدْقِيَّا: «بِمَاذَا أخْطَأتُ إلَيْكَ أوْ إلَى خُدَّامِكَ أوْ إلَى هَذَا الشَّعْبِ حَتَّى وَضَعتُمُونِي فِي السِّجْنِ؟ 19 وَأينَ أنبِيَاؤُكُمُ الَّذِينَ تَنَبَّأُوا لَكُمْ وَقَالُوا: ‹لَنْ يَأْتِيَ مَلِكُ بَابِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَى هَذِهِ الأرْضِ؟› 20 وَالْآنَ يَا سَيِّدِي المَلِكَ، تَكَرَّمْ وَاسمَعْ طَلَبِي. أرْجُوكَ، لَا تُعِدْنِي إلَى بَيْتِ يُونَاثَانَ الكَاتِبِ، فَإنِّي سَأمُوتُ هُنَاكَ.»
21 فَأمَرَ المَلِكُ بِوَضعِ إرْمِيَا فِي سَاحَةِ السِّجْنِ. وَأمَرَ بِأنْ يُعْطَى رَغِيفَ خُبْزٍ يَوْمِيًّا مِنْ شَارِعِ الخَبَّازِينَ، حَتَّى لَمْ يَتَبَقَّ خُبْزٌ فِي المَدِينَةِ. وَمَكَثَ إرْمِيَا فِي سَاحَةِ السِّجْنِ.

Jeremiah in Prison
37 Zedekiah(A) son of Josiah was made king(B) of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin[a](C) son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention(D) to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent(E) Jehukal(F) son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah(G) son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray(H) to the Lord our God for us.”
4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.(I) 5 Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt,(J) and when the Babylonians[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew(K) from Jerusalem.(L)
6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(M) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(N) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(O) 8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(P) it and burn(Q) it down.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(R) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(S) this city down.”
11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn(T) from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(U) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(V) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(W)
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(X) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten(Y) and imprisoned(Z) in the house(AA) of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent(AB) for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked(AC) him privately,(AD) “Is there any word from the Lord?”
“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered(AE) into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime(AF) have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets(AG) who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’? 20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”(AH)
21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread(AI) in the city was gone.(AJ) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(AK)
