2 “너희 형제에게는 [a]‘내 백성’ 이라 하고 너희 자매에게는 [b]‘나의 사랑하는 자’ 라 고 하라.”
2 “내 자녀들아, 너희는 너희 어머니를 책망하고 책망하라. 너희 어머니는 내 아내가 아니며 나는 그녀의 남편이 아니다. 그녀가 자기 얼굴에서 음란한 모습을 지워 버리게 하고 그 유방 사이에서 음란을 제거하게 하라.
3 그렇지 않으면 내가 그녀를 벌거벗겨 저가 태어나던 날과 같게 할 것이며 저를 광야같이 되게 하고 마른 땅같이 되게 하여 목말라 죽게 할 것이다.
4 내가 그 자녀들에게 사랑을 베풀지 않을 것이다. 그들은 음란한 자식들이기 때문이다.
5 그들의 어머니가 창녀짓을 하였고 그들을 배었던 여자가 부끄러운 일을 하였다. 그녀는 ‘내가 사랑하는 자들을 쫓아가겠다. 그들은 나에게 빵과 물과 양털과 모시와 기름과 술을 준다’ 라고 말하였다.
6 그러므로 내가 가시덤불로 그 길을 막고 담을 쌓아 저가 그 길을 찾지 못하게 하겠다.
7 그녀가 사랑하는 자들을 쫓아갈지라도 따라 잡지 못할 것이며 그들을 찾아도 만나지 못할 것이다. 그제서야 그녀는 ‘내가 본남편에게 돌아가겠다. 내 형편이 그 때가 지금보다 더 나았다’ 하고 말할 것이다.
8 저에게 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름도 내가 주고 저가 바알 숭배를 위해 사용한 은과 금도 내가 주었는데 저는 이것을 알지 못하고 있다.
9 “그러므로 [c]추수 때에 내가 내 곡식을 찾아가고 그 시기에 나의 새 포도주를 도로 찾으며 저의 벌거벗은 몸을 가리도록 준 내 양털과 모시를 뺏을 것이다.
10 이제 내가 그녀의 연인들이 보는 데서 저의 수치를 드러내겠다. 저를 내 손에서 건져낼 자가 없을 것이다.
11 내가 저의 모든 즐거움과 연례 축제와 매월 있는 [d]초하룻날 행사와 안식일과 모든 명절을 폐지할 것이며
12 저가 그 연인들에게 화대로 받았다고 하는 포도나무와 무화과나무를 내가 못 쓰도록 하여 잡목 숲이 되게 하고 들짐승이 그것을 먹게 하겠다.
13 저가 귀고리와 패물로 단장하고 연인들을 따라가서 나를 잊어버리고 바알에게 분향한 그 날수만큼 내가 그녀를 벌할 것이다. 이것은 나 주 여호와의 말이다.
14 “그러므로 내가 그녀를 꾀어내어 광야로 데리고 가서 부드러운 말로 잘 타이르고
15 거기서 그녀에게 포도원을 되돌려 주고 [e]고난의 골짜기를 희망의 문이 되게 하겠다. 저가 어렸을 때와 같이, 이집트에서 나오던 날과 같이 거기서 노래할 것이다.
16 “나 여호와가 말한다. 그 날에 저가 나를 ‘내 남편’ 이라 부르고 다시는 [f]‘내 주’ 라 부르지 않을 것이다.
17 내가 그 입에서 바알들의 이름을 제하여 저가 다시는 그 이름을 부르지 않게 하겠다.
18 그 날에 내가 모든 들짐승과 공중의 새들과 땅에 기어다니는 것들과 계약을 맺어 내 백성을 해치지 못하게 할 것이며 또 이 땅에서 활과 칼을 꺾어 전쟁을 없애고 그들이 평안히 살게 할 것이다.
19 이스라엘아, 내가 너를 영원히 내 아내로 삼아 너에게 신의와 사랑과 자비를 베풀고
20 진실함으로 너를 맞을 것이니 네가 나를 여호와로 인정할 것이다.
21 “나 여호와가 말한다. 그 날에 내가 응답하겠다. 나는 하늘에 응답하고 하늘은 땅에 응답하고
22 땅은 곡식과 포도주와 기름에 응답하고 또 이것들은 [g]이스르엘에 응답할 것이다.
23 내가 나를 위하여 그를 이 땅에 심고 ‘사랑받지 못하는 자’ 라고 불리던 자에게 내가 사랑을 베풀고 내 백성이 아니라고 하던 자에게 ‘너는 내 백성이다’ 하고 말할 것이며 그들이 ‘주는 나의 하나님이십니다’ 하고 말할 것이다.”

God’s Unfaithful People
2 “Bring[c] charges against your mother, [d]bring charges;
For (A)she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband!
Let her put away her (B)harlotries from her sight,
And her adulteries from between her breasts;
3 Lest (C)I strip her naked
And expose her, as in the day she was (D)born,
And make her like a wilderness,
And set her like a dry land,
And slay her with (E)thirst.
4 “I will not have mercy on her children,
For they are the (F)children of harlotry.
5 For their mother has played the harlot;
She who conceived them has behaved shamefully.
For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
(G)Who give me my bread and my water,
My wool and my linen,
My oil and my drink.’
6 “Therefore, behold,
(H)I will hedge up your way with thorns,
And [e]wall her in,
So that she cannot find her paths.
7 She will [f]chase her lovers,
But not overtake them;
Yes, she will seek them, but not find them.
Then she will say,
(I)‘I will go and return to my (J)first husband,
For then it was better for me than now.’
8 For she did not (K)know
That I gave her grain, new wine, and oil,
And multiplied her silver and gold—
Which they prepared for Baal.
9 “Therefore I will return and take away
My grain in its time
And My new wine in its season,
And will take back My wool and My linen,
Given to cover her nakedness.
10 Now (L)I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
And no one shall deliver her from My hand.
11 (M)I will also cause all her mirth to cease,
Her feast days,
Her New Moons,
Her Sabbaths—
All her appointed feasts.
12 “And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees,
Of which she has said,
‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me.’
So I will make them a forest,
And the beasts of the field shall eat them.
13 I will punish her
For the days of the Baals to which she burned incense.
She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry,
And went after her lovers;
But Me she forgot,” says the Lord.
God’s Mercy on His People
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
Will bring her into the wilderness,
And speak [g]comfort to her.
15 I will give her her vineyards from there,
And (N)the Valley of Achor as a door of hope;
She shall sing there,
As in (O)the days of her youth,
(P)As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16 “And it shall be, in that day,”
Says the Lord,
“That you will call Me [h]‘My Husband,’
And no longer call Me [i]‘My Master,’
17 For (Q)I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals,
And they shall be remembered by their name no more.
18 In that day I will make a (R)covenant for them
With the beasts of the field,
With the birds of the air,
And with the creeping things of the ground.
Bow and sword of battle (S)I will shatter from the earth,
To make them (T)lie down safely.
19 “I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me
In righteousness and justice,
In lovingkindness and mercy;
20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,
And (U)you shall know the Lord.
21 “It shall come to pass in that day
That (V)I will answer,” says the Lord;
“I will answer the heavens,
And they shall answer the earth.
22 The earth shall answer
With grain,
With new wine,
And with oil;
They shall answer [j]Jezreel.
23 Then (W)I will sow her for Myself in the earth,
(X)And I will have mercy on her who had [k]not obtained mercy;
Then (Y)I will say to those who were [l]not My people,
‘You are [m]My people!’
And they shall say, ‘You are my God!’ ”

Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished
2 [a] Say to your brothers, (A)“You are my people,”[b] and to your sisters, (B)“You have received mercy.”[c]
2 “Plead with your mother, plead—
for (C)she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband—
that she put away (D)her whoring from her face,
and her adultery from between her breasts;
3 lest (E)I strip her naked
and make her as (F)in the day she was born,
and (G)make her like a wilderness,
and make her like a parched land,
and kill her with thirst.
4 (H)Upon her children also I will have no mercy,
(I)because they are children of whoredom.
5 For (J)their mother has played the whore;
she who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For (K)she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who (L)give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’
6 Therefore (M)I will hedge up her[d] way with thorns,
and (N)I will build a wall against her,
so that she cannot find her paths.

but not overtake them,

and (AJ)adorned herself with her ring and jewelry,
and went after her lovers
and forgot me, declares the Lord.
The Lord's Mercy on Israel
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
and (AK)bring her into the wilderness,
and (AL)speak tenderly to her.
15 And there I will give her her vineyards
and make the Valley of Achor[e] a door of hope.
And there she shall answer (AM)as in the days of her youth,
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.
16 “And (AN)in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For (AO)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18 And (AP)I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And (AQ)I will abolish[f] the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in (AR)safety. 19 And I will betroth you to me (AS)forever. (AT)I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 (AU)I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And (AV)you shall know the Lord.
21 “And (AW)in that day (AX)I will answer, declares the Lord,
I will answer the heavens,
and they shall answer the earth,
22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and they shall answer (AY)Jezreel,[g]
23 and (AZ)I will sow her for myself in the land.
And (BA)I (BB)will have mercy on No Mercy,[h]
and (BC)I will say to Not My People,[i] (BD)‘You are my people’;
and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”
