10 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 파라오에게 가거라. 내가 그와 그의 신하들의 마음을 굳게 하였다. 그것은 내가 그들 가운데서 이러한 징표를 보이려는 것이다. 2 그뿐만 아니라 내가 이집트 사람들을 어떻게 놀렸는지, 그리고 내가 그들 가운데서 어떤 이적을 행하였는지를, 네가 네 자손에게 알리게 하려는 것이다. 그리고 내가 주라는 것을 너희가 알게 하려는 것이기도 하다.”
3 모세와 아론이 파라오에게 가서 말하였다. “히브리 사람의 하나님이신 주께서 하시는 말씀입니다. ‘네가 언제까지 내 앞에서 굽히지 않고 버틸 셈이냐? 내 백성을 놓아 주어 그들이 나를 예배할 수 있게 하여라. 4 네가 내 백성을 보내지 않으면 내가 내일 메뚜기 떼를 네 온 땅에 보내겠다. 5 메뚜기 떼가 온 땅을 덮으리니 아무도 땅을 볼 수 없을 것이다. 네 땅에는 우박의 피해에서 살아남은 것이 거의 없다. 그러나 그것마저 메뚜기 떼가 먹어 치울 것이다. 그것들이 들에서 자라는 나무들까지도 먹어 치울 것이다. 6 네 궁전과 신하들의 집과 온 이집트 사람의 집에 메뚜기 떼가 가득 찰 것이다. 네 조상들과 그들의 조상들이 이 땅에 자리 잡고 살기 시작한 때부터 지금까지 이런 일을 본 적이 없을 것이다.’” 그러고 나서 그들은 파라오 앞에서 발길을 돌려 물러나왔다.
7 파라오의 신하들이 파라오에게 말하였다. “우리를 못 살게 구는 저 사람을 언제까지 그냥 두시렵니까? 이스라엘 사람들을 보내어 주 그들의 하나님을 예배하게 해 주십시오. 임금님께서는 이집트가 다 망하게 된 것을 아직도 모르십니까?”
8 모세와 아론이 다시 파라오에게 불려갔다. 파라오가 말하였다. “가서 주 너희 하나님께 예배를 드려라. 그런데 갈 사람들은 누구누구냐?”
9 모세가 대답하였다. “우리가 주 앞에서 축제를 올리려 합니다. 그래서 어린아이와 노인, 아들과 딸을 데려 가고 소 떼와 양 떼도 몰고 가야 합니다.”
10 그러자 파라오가 그들에게 말하였다. “내가 너희에게 여자들과 아이들까지 딸려서 보내 줄 것 같으냐? 내게 그런 마음이 들게 하려면 너희는 정말로 주의 도움을 받아야 할 것이다. 네 놈들이 마음속에 못된 생각을 품고 있는 것이 분명하구나. 11 어림없는 소리! 가려면 너희 남자 어른들이나 가서 주께 예배드려라. 너희가 바라던 것이 그것 아니더냐.” 모세와 아론이 파라오 앞에서 쫓겨났다.
12 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이집트 땅 위로 네 손을 뻗어라. 그러면 메뚜기 떼가 온 이집트 땅 위로 몰려올 것이다. 우박의 피해를 입고도 살아남은 식물을 메뚜기가 다 먹어치울 것이다.”
13 모세가 이집트 땅 위로 지팡이를 뻗었다. 그러자 주께서 동쪽으로부터 거센 바람이 불어오게 하셨다. 그 바람은 하루 낮, 하루 밤 동안 쉬지 않고 불었다. 그 다음날 아침이 되자 동풍을 타고 메뚜기 떼가 몰려왔다. 14 메뚜기 떼는 이집트 땅으로 날아 들어와 온 땅 위에 내려앉았다. 그렇게 굉장한 메뚜기 떼는 전에도 볼 수 없었고 앞으로도 결코 볼 수 없을 것이었다. 15 메뚜기 떼가 온 땅을 뒤덮어서 땅이 새까맣게 보일 지경이었다. 메뚜기 떼가 우박이 남겨 놓은 식물과 나무들을 모두 갉아먹어버렸다. 그리하여 이집트 땅 위에는 푸른 나무나 농작물이 하나도 남지 않았다.
16 파라오가 서둘러 모세와 아론을 불러들여 말하였다. “내가 주 너희 하나님과 너희에게 죄를 지었다. 17 내 죄를 한 번 더 용서해 다오. 그리고 주 너희 하나님께 기도하여 이 메뚜기 떼가 내 앞에서 사라지게 해 다오.”
18 모세가 파라오 앞에서 물러나와 주께 기도하였다. 19 그러자 주께서 아주 강한 서풍을 일으키셨다. 그리고 서풍에 실어서 메뚜기 떼를 갈대바다로 몰아넣으셨다. 그리하여 이집트 땅에는 메뚜기가 한 마리도 남지 않았다. 20 그러나 주께서는 파라오가 여전히 고집을 부리게 하셨다. 이번에도 파라오가 이스라엘 사람들을 놓아 주지 않았다.
아홉째 재앙: 어둠
21 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘을 향하여 네 손을 뻗어라. 그러면 손으로 만져질 만큼 짙은 어둠이 온 이집트 땅에 퍼질 것이다. 너무나 캄캄해서 누구나 그 어둠을 몸으로 느낄 수 있을 것이다.”
22 모세가 하늘을 향하여 손을 뻗었다. 그러자 완전한 어둠이 온 이집트를 사흘 동안 뒤덮었다. 23 사흘 동안 사람들이 서로를 볼 수 없었고, 자기 자리에서 꼼짝도 할 수 없었다. 그렇지만 이스라엘 사람들이 사는 곳은 어디에나 빛이 있어 환하였다.
24 파라오가 다시 모세를 불러서 말하였다. “가서 주께 예배드려라. 다만 너희의 소 떼와 양 떼는 두고 가라. 너희의 아이들은 너희와 함께 가도 좋다.”
25 모세가 대답하였다. “임금님께서는 우리에게 희생제물과 번제물을 주셔야 합니다. 그리하여 우리가 주 우리 하나님께 그것들을 바칠 수 있게 해 주셔야 합니다. 26 그리고 우리가 기르는 소 떼도 우리와 함께 가야 합니다. 단 한 마리도[a] 남겨 두어서는 안 됩니다. 우리는 주 우리 하나님께 예배드릴 때에 그것들 가운데 몇 마리를 주께 바쳐야 합니다. 그런데 우리가 그곳에 다다를 때까지는 주께 예배드리기 위해 어느 것을 바쳐야 할지 알 수 없습니다.”
27 그러나 주께서 파라오의 마음을 굳게 하셨다. 그리하여 파라오가 이스라엘 사람을 보내고 싶어 하지 않았다. 28 파라오가 모세에게 말하였다. “내 앞에서 꺼져 버려라. 몸조심 하는 게 좋을 것이다. 다시는 내 앞에 얼씬도 하지 말아라. 또 한 번 내 눈 앞에 나타나면 그때는 너를 죽여 없애겠다.”
29 모세가 대답하였다. “말씀하신 대로 다시는 임금님 앞에 나타나지 않겠습니다.”

The Plague of Locusts
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart(A) and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs(B) of mine among them 2 that you may tell your children(C) and grandchildren how I dealt harshly(D) with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”(E)
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble(F) yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4 If you refuse(G) to let them go, I will bring locusts(H) into your country tomorrow. 5 They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left(I) after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields.(J) 6 They will fill your houses(K) and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians—something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.’”(L) Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare(M) to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?”(N)
8 Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship(O) the Lord your God,” he said. “But tell me who will be going.”
9 Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival(P) to the Lord.”
10 Pharaoh said, “The Lord be with you—if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.[a] 11 No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.
12 And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand(Q) over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”
13 So Moses stretched out his staff(R) over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts;(S) 14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts,(T) nor will there ever be again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured(U) all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly summoned(V) Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned(W) against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive(X) my sin once more and pray(Y) to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”
18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.(Z) 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[b] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(AA) and he would not let the Israelites go.
The Plague of Darkness
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness(AB) spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness(AC) covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.(AD)
24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go,(AE) worship the Lord. Even your women and children(AF) may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.”(AG)
25 But Moses said, “You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings(AH) to present to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.”
27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(AI) and he was not willing to let them go. 28 Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.”
29 “Just as you say,” Moses replied. “I will never appear(AJ) before you again.”

The Eighth Plague: Locusts(A)
10 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh; (B)for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, (C)that I may show these signs of Mine before him, 2 and that (D)you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son’s son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may (E)know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to (F)humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may (G)serve Me. 4 Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring (H)locusts into your territory. 5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the earth; and (I)they shall eat the residue of what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree which grows up for you out of the field. 6 They shall (J)fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians—which neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’ ” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh.
7 Then Pharaoh’s (K)servants said to him, “How long shall this man be (L)a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”
8 So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God. Who are the ones that are going?”
9 And Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, with our flocks and our herds we will go, for (M)we must hold a feast to the Lord.”
10 Then he said to them, “The Lord had better be with you when I let you and your little ones go! Beware, for evil is ahead of you. 11 Not so! Go now, you who are men, and serve the Lord, for that is what you desired.” And they were driven (N)out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, (O)“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come upon the land of Egypt, and (P)eat every herb of the land—all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And (Q)the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt. They were very severe; (R)previously there had been no such locusts as they, nor shall there be such after them. 15 For they (S)covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they (T)ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.
16 Then Pharaoh called (U)for Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, (V)“I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and (W)entreat[a] the Lord your God, that He may take away from me this death only.” 18 So he (X)went out from Pharaoh and entreated the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them (Y)into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But the Lord (Z)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.
The Ninth Plague: Darkness
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, (AA)“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, [b]darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was (AB)thick darkness in all the land of Egypt (AC)three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. (AD)But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24 Then Pharaoh called to Moses and (AE)said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your (AF)little ones also go with you.”
25 But Moses said, “You must also give [c]us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26 Our (AG)livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the Lord our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”
27 But the Lord (AH)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, (AI)“Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”
29 So Moses said, “You have spoken well. (AJ)I will never see your face again.”

10 耶和華對摩西說：「你去見法老，我已使他和他臣僕的心剛硬，好在他們當中行我這些神蹟。 2 這樣，你就可以把我如何嚴懲埃及人以及我在他們當中所行的神蹟告訴你的子孫，好叫你們知道我是耶和華。」
3 摩西和亞倫便進宮去見法老，對他說：「希伯來人的上帝耶和華說，『你要到什麼時候才肯在我面前謙卑下來，讓我的子民離開這裡去事奉我？ 4 這次你若再不答應，明天我要使蝗蟲飛入你的國境。 5 牠們鋪天蓋地，要吃光冰雹過後田間所剩的，包括一切樹木。 6 你的王宮及臣僕和所有埃及人的房屋都要佈滿蝗蟲，這是你祖祖輩輩從未見過的蝗災。』」摩西說完，便轉身離開法老。
7 臣僕對法老說：「這個人還要給我們添多少麻煩呢？讓他們離開去事奉他們的上帝耶和華吧！埃及已經快崩潰了，你不知道嗎？」 8 法老便召摩西和亞倫進宮，對他們說：「你們去事奉你們的上帝耶和華吧！但你們誰要去呢？」 9 摩西回答說：「我們男女老幼都要去，還有我們的牛群和羊群，因為我們要去守耶和華的節期，向祂獻祭。」 10 法老聽後，說：「我若讓你們帶走婦女和孩子，最好耶和華能保護你們！你們真是居心叵測。 11 不行！只有男子可以去事奉耶和華，這是你們一直要求的。」法老說完，便下令把他們趕出去。
12 耶和華對摩西說：「你向埃及伸杖，使蝗蟲飛來吃盡冰雹過後剩下的植物。」 13 摩西就向埃及伸杖。耶和華使東風在埃及境內颳了整整一天一夜，到早晨，東風帶來了蝗蟲。 14 埃及到處都佈滿了蝗蟲，數目之多實在是空前絕後。 15 整個埃及鋪滿蝗蟲，地上一片黑暗。這些蝗蟲吃盡了冰雹過後剩下的農作物和樹上的果子，沒有留下一點青綠。 16 法老急忙召見摩西和亞倫，對他們說：「我得罪了你們的上帝耶和華，又得罪了你們。 17 現在求你饒恕我的罪，就這一次，為我祈求你們的上帝耶和華撤去這場死亡之災吧！」 18 摩西就離開法老出去祈求耶和華， 19 耶和華就把風向倒轉，變成猛烈的西風，把蝗蟲颳走，吹進紅海。埃及境內一隻蝗蟲也沒留下。 20 可是，耶和華又使法老心硬，不讓以色列人離開埃及。

21 耶和華對摩西說：「你向天伸杖，使埃及全境漆黑一片，那黑暗濃得甚至可以摸到。」 22 摩西向天伸杖，埃及全境便漆黑了三天之久。 23 埃及人彼此看不見，誰也不敢移動半步。可是，以色列人住的地方卻有光。 24 法老把摩西召來，對他說：「去吧，帶著你們的婦女和孩子去事奉耶和華吧，但你們要把牛羊留下。」 25 摩西回答說：「你要讓我們帶走牛羊，因為牠們是獻給我們上帝耶和華的祭物和燔祭牲。 26 我們要帶走所有的牲畜，一隻蹄子也不留下，因為我們要從其中選一些來獻給我們的上帝耶和華。我們抵達目的地前，還不知道把哪些獻給祂。」 27 但耶和華使法老的心剛硬，不肯讓以色列百姓離開。 28 法老對摩西說：「給我滾出去！不要再讓我見到你，因為你再見我面之日必死。」 29 摩西回答說：「你說得好，我必不再見你的面。」
