솔로몬의 금언
25 이것은 유다 왕 히스기야의 신하들이 편집한 솔로몬의 금언이다:
2 일을 숨기는 것은 하나님의 영광이며 일을 밝혀내는 것은 왕들의 영광이다.
3 하늘이 높고 땅이 깊은 것같이 왕들의 마음도 헤아릴 수가 없다.
4 은의 불순물을 제거하라. 그러면 금속 세공업자의 손을 거쳐 쓸 만한 그릇이 나올 것이다.
5 왕 앞에서 악한 자를 제거하라. 그러면 그 왕위가 의로 굳게 설 것이다.
6 왕 앞에서 잘난 체하며 높은 자리에 서지 말아라.
7 높은 자리로 올라오라고 요청받는 것이 대중 앞에서 말석으로 내려가라고 모욕을 당하는 것보다 낫다.
8 너는 어떤 일로 너무 성급하게 법정으로 달려가지 말아라. 만일 상대방이 너를 부끄럽게 하면 그때는 어떻게 하겠느냐?
9 너는 네 이웃과 다툴 만한 문제가 있거든 두 사람 사이에 조용히 해결하고 남의 비밀을 누설하지 말아라.
10 그렇지 않으면 그 말을 듣는 사람이 너를 부끄럽게 할 것이니 네 평판이 좋지 않을 것이다.
11 경우에 적합한 말은 은쟁반에 올려 놓은 금사과와 같다.
12 지혜로운 사람의 책망은 그것을 듣는 자에게 금귀고리나 순금 장식과 같다.
13 충성스러운 사절은 그를 보낸 사람에게 [a]무더운 한여름의 시원한 냉수 같아서 자기 상관의 마음을 시원하게 한다.
14 선물을 주겠다고 입으로만 떠벌리는 자는 비 없는 구름과 바람 같은 사람이다.
15 인내력 있는 설득은 완강한 통치자의 마음도 돌이켜 놓을 수 있으며 부드러운 혀는 뼈도 꺾을 수 있다.
16 꿀을 구하면 적당히 먹어라. 너무 많이 먹으면 토하게 된다.
17 너는 이웃집에 자주 다니지 말아라. 그렇지 않으면 네 이웃이 너에게 싫증을 느껴 너를 미워할 것이다.
18 자기 이웃에 대하여 거짓 증언하는 사람은 방망이와 칼과 뾰족한 화살로 그 이웃을 해치는 사람과 같다.
19 [b]위기에 처한 때에 신실치 못한 자를 신뢰하는 것은 흔들거리는 이로 음식을 씹거나 위골된 발로 걷는 것과 같다.
20 마음이 상한 자에게 노래를 부르는 것은 추운 날에 그의 옷을 벗기거나 [c]그의 상처에 소금을 치는 것과 같다.
21 네 원수가 굶주리거든 먹을 것을 주고 목말라 하거든 마실 것을 주어라.
22 그러면 네 원수는 머리에 숯불을 놓은 것같이 부끄러워 견딜 수 없을 것이며 너는 여호와께 상을 받을 것이다.
23 북풍이 비를 일으키는 것같이 험담하는 혀는 분노를 일으킨다.
24 다투기 좋아하는 여자와 한집에 사는 것보다 차라리 옥상 한 구석에서 혼자 사는 것이 더 낫다.
25 멀리서 온 좋은 소식은 목마른 사람에게 냉수와 같다.
26 의로운 사람이 악인에게 굴복하는 것은 우물을 흐리게 하고 샘을 더럽히는 것과 같다.
27 꿀을 너무 많이 먹어도 이롭지 못한 것처럼 자신의 명예만을 추구하는 것도 이롭지 못하다.
28 자제할 능력이 없는 사람은 성벽이 무너진 무방비 상태의 성과 같다.

25 이것 또한 솔로몬의 잠언이며 유다의 히스기야 왕의 신하들이 베껴 쓴 것이다.
2 우리가 알 수 없도록 숨겨진 일들은 하나님의 영광이고[a]
일을 파헤쳐 드러내진 것은 왕의 영광이다.
3 하늘이 높고 땅이 깊은 것처럼
왕의 마음도 헤아리기 어렵다.
4 은에서 불순물을 없애라.
그래야 은장이가 그릇을 만들 수 있다.
5 악한 자를 왕 앞에서 없애라.
그래야 왕위가 정의로 굳게 서게 될 것이다.
6 왕 앞에서 스스로 잘난 체하지 말고
높은 사람의 자리에 끼어들지 말아라.
7 높은 사람 앞에서 모욕을 당하는 것보다
“여기로 올라오시오.” 하는 말을 듣는 것이 낫다.
8 네가 네 눈으로 보았다고 해서
너무 성급하게 소송하지 말아라.
뒷날 네 이웃이 너를 부끄럽게 만들면 어찌 하려느냐?
9 이웃과 다툴 일이 있으면 그와 다투고
그의 비밀을 퍼뜨리지 말아라.
10 그 말을 들은 사람이 너를 흉보지 않도록 하여라.
그래야 너의 명예를 잃지 않을 것이다.
11 때에 맞게 바른말을 하는 것은
은쟁반에 담긴 금사과와 같다.
12 들을 줄 아는 사람의 귀에 들려주는 지혜로운 책망은
금귀고리이며 순금 장식이다.
13 충성스러운 심부름꾼들은
그들을 보낸 주인들에게는
무더운 추수 때의 시원한 눈과 같아서
주인들의 마음을 기쁘게 해준다.
14 선물한다고 거짓말로 떠벌이는 사람은
비를 내리지 못하는 구름과 바람 같다.
15 끈기 있게 설득하면 통치자의 생각도 바꿀 수 있고
부드러운 말은 뼈도 녹인다.
16 꿀을 보면 적당히 먹어라.
너무 많이 먹으면 토하게 된다.
17 이웃집에 너무 자주 다니지 말아라.
지겨워져서 너를 미워하게 될지도 모른다.
18 이웃에게 해가 될 거짓 증언을 하는 사람은
방망이요 칼이요 뾰족한 화살촉과 같다.
19 어려움을 당할 때에
진실하지 못한 사람을 믿지 말아라.
그는 썩은 이빨이나 허약한 다리와 같다.
20 마음이 아픈 사람 앞에서 노래를 부르는 것은
추운 날 외투를 벗기고 아픈 상처에 식초를 붓는 것과 같다.
21 네 원수가 굶주리거든 먹을 것을 주고
목말라 하거든 마실 물을 주어라.
22 이렇게 하는 것은 그의 머리 위에 숯불을 얹는 것이니[b],
주께서 너에게 상으로 갚아 주실 것이다.
23 북쪽에서 불어오는 바람이 비를 몰아오듯이
몰래 헐뜯는 말은 분노를 일으킨다.
24 허구한 날 바가지 긁는 아내와 한 집에서 사는 것보다
차라리 다락 한구석에서 혼자 사는 것이 낫다.
25 먼 곳에서 오는 좋은 소식은
목마른 사람에게 찬물 한 그릇과 같다.
26 악한 사람에게 붙은 의로운 사람은
흐려진 샘물, 더럽혀진 우물물과 같다.
27 꿀도 너무 많이 먹으면 좋지 않듯
영예 위에 또 영예를 얻으려는 것은 좋지 않다.
28 자기 자신을 다스리지 못하는 사람은
성벽이 허물어진 도성과 같다.

25 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:
10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.
18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20 As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.
21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.
23 The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.
27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

25 These(A) also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied:
2 (B)It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,
But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth,
So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 (C)Take away the dross from silver,
And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry.
5 Take away the wicked from before the king,
And his throne will be established in (D)righteousness.
6 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king,
And do not stand in the place of the great;
7 (E)For it is better that he say to you,
“Come up here,”
Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince,
Whom your eyes have seen.
8 (F)Do not go hastily to [a]court;
For what will you do in the end,
When your neighbor has put you to shame?
9 (G)Debate your case with your neighbor,
And do not disclose the secret to another;
10 Lest he who hears it expose your shame,

24 (R)It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop,
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

27 It is not good to eat much honey;
