33 “욥, 이제 너는 내 말을 들어라.
2 내가 입을 여니 내 혀가 입 속에서 말을 하는구나.
3 내가 아는 것을 정직하고 진실하게 말하겠다.
4 하나님의 성령이 나를 만드셨고 전능하신 분의 숨결이 나에게 생명을 주셨다.
5 네가 내 말에 대답할 수 있으면 준비했다가 나에게 대답하고 반박하여라.
6 하나님 앞에서는 너와 내가 마찬가지이다. 우리는 모두 흙으로 창조된 자들이다.
7 그러므로 너는 나를 두려워할 이유가 없다. 나는 너를 억누르지 않을 것이다.
8 “나는 네가 계속 이렇게 말하는 것을 들었다.
9 ‘나는 깨끗하며 죄가 없고 허물도 없으며 잘못한 것이 아무것도 없다.
10 그런데도 하나님은 나를 칠 구실을 찾고 나를 원수처럼 대하시며
11 내 발에 쇠고랑을 채우시고 나의 모든 행동을 일일이 감시하신다.’
12 “그러나 내가 너에게 말하고 싶은 것은 네가 그런 식으로 하나님께 말하는 그 자체가 잘못되었다는 것이다. 하나님은 사람보다 더 위대하신 분이시다.
13 하나님이 사람의 말에 대답하지 않는다고 어째서 네가 그에게 불평하느냐?
14 하나님이 여러 가지 방법으로 계속 말씀하셔도 사람이 그의 말에 귀를 기울이지 않는다.
15 하나님은 사람이 밤에 깊이 잠들 때에도 꿈과 환상 가운데서 말씀하시며
16 그들의 귀를 열어 그 말씀을 듣게 하시고 [a]경고하여 그들을 놀라게 하신다.
17 하나님이 이렇게 하시는 것은 사람을 잘못된 데서 돌이키시고 그들이 교만하지 않게 하기 위해서이다.
18 하나님은 사람이 멸망하도록 내버려 두지 않으시고 그 생명을 죽음에서 구해 내신다.
19 또 하나님은 사람을 깨우치기 위해서 그에게 질병과 고통을 주시는 때도 있다.
20 이럴 경우 사람은 입맛을 잃어 아무리 맛있는 음식이라도 쳐다보기가 싫어지며
21 그의 몸은 점점 쇠약해져서 뼈와 가죽만 남게 되고
22 결국 그는 죽음 직전에 이르게 된다.
23 “만일 이때 하나님의 수많은 천사 중 하나가 그 사람의 중재자로 나타나서 그에게 옳은 길을 보여 준다면
24 하나님은 그를 불쌍히 여겨 [b]천사에게 ‘그를 살려 주어라. 그를 죽게 해서는 안 된다. 내가 그의 몸값을 찾았다’ 하고 말씀하실 것이다.
25 그러면 그의 몸이 젊은 시절과 마찬가지로 다시 회복될 것이다.
26 그리고 그가 하나님께 기도하면 하나님은 그의 기도를 듣고 그를 기쁘게 받아들일 것이며 그는 또 기쁨으로 하나님을 뵈올 수 있고 하나님도 그와의 [c]의로운 관계를 회복시킬 것이다.
27 그러면 그는 ‘내가 범죄하였으나 하나님은 나를 살려 주셨다.
28 그가 나를 죽지 않게 하셨으므로 내가 다시 살아 빛을 보게 되었구나’ 하고 사람들에게 말하게 될 것이다.
29 “하나님이 사람에게 이런 일을 두 번 세 번 거듭 되풀이하시는 이유는
30 그 영혼을 구원하여 그를 생명의 빛 가운데서 살게 하기 위해서이다.
31 욥, 너는 내가 하는 말에 조용히 귀를 기울여라. 내가 좀더 말하겠다.
32 만일 네가 할 말이 있거든 하여라. 나는 너의 의로운 점을 인정해 주고 싶다.
33 그러나 할 말이 없으면 조용히 내 말을 들어라. 내가 너에게 지혜를 가르치겠다.”

33 “But now, Job, listen(A) to my words;
pay attention to everything I say.(B)
2 I am about to open my mouth;
my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words come from an upright heart;(C)
my lips sincerely speak what I know.(D)
4 The Spirit(E) of God has made me;(F)
the breath of the Almighty(G) gives me life.(H)
5 Answer me(I) then, if you can;
stand up(J) and argue your case before me.(K)
6 I am the same as you in God’s sight;(L)
I too am a piece of clay.(M)
7 No fear of me should alarm you,
nor should my hand be heavy on you.(N)
8 “But you have said in my hearing—
I heard the very words—
9 ‘I am pure,(O) I have done no wrong;(P)
I am clean and free from sin.(Q)
10 Yet God has found fault with me;
he considers me his enemy.(R)
11 He fastens my feet in shackles;(S)
he keeps close watch on all my paths.’(T)
12 “But I tell you, in this you are not right,
for God is greater than any mortal.(U)
13 Why do you complain to him(V)
that he responds to no one’s words[a]?(W)
14 For God does speak(X)—now one way, now another(Y)—
though no one perceives it.(Z)
15 In a dream,(AA) in a vision(AB) of the night,(AC)
when deep sleep(AD) falls on people
as they slumber in their beds,
16 he may speak(AE) in their ears
and terrify them(AF) with warnings,(AG)
17 to turn them from wrongdoing
and keep them from pride,(AH)
18 to preserve them from the pit,(AI)
their lives from perishing by the sword.[b](AJ)
19 “Or someone may be chastened(AK) on a bed of pain(AL)
with constant distress in their bones,(AM)
20 so that their body finds food(AN) repulsive
and their soul loathes the choicest meal.(AO)
21 Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
and their bones,(AP) once hidden, now stick out.(AQ)
22 They draw near to the pit,(AR)
and their life to the messengers of death.[c](AS)
23 Yet if there is an angel at their side,
a messenger,(AT) one out of a thousand,
sent to tell them how to be upright,(AU)
24 and he is gracious to that person and says to God,
‘Spare them from going down to the pit;(AV)
I have found a ransom for them(AW)—
25 let their flesh be renewed(AX) like a child’s;
let them be restored as in the days of their youth’(AY)—
26 then that person can pray to God and find favor with him,(AZ)
they will see God’s face and shout for joy;(BA)
he will restore them to full well-being.(BB)
27 And they will go to others and say,
‘I have sinned,(BC) I have perverted what is right,(BD)
but I did not get what I deserved.(BE)
28 God has delivered(BF) me from going down to the pit,(BG)
and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’(BH)
