거짓 선지자들에 대한 경고
4 사랑하는 여러분, 많은 거짓 예언자들이 세상으로 나갔습니다. 그러니 하나님께 영감을 받았다고 주장하는 사람[a]을 모두 믿지는 마십시오. 그들이 정말로 하나님께로부터 왔는지 시험해 보십시오. 2 하나님께로부터 온 사람은 이렇게 알 수 있습니다. “예수는 이 세상에 오신 그리스도이시다. 그리고 그분은 사람의 몸을 입고 오셨다.” 라고 고백하는 예언자는 모두 하나님께로부터 온 사람입니다. 3 그러나 예수께 대하여 이렇게 말하지 않는 예언자는 하나님께로부터 오지 않았습니다. 그 예언자는 그리스도의 적의 영을 가진 자입니다. 여러분은 그리스도의 적이 세상에 오리라는 말을 들었을 것입니다. 그가 이미 지금 여기에 와 있습니다.
4 사랑하는 나의 자녀들이여, 여러분은 하나님께로부터 났고, 이 거짓 예언자들을 이겨 냈습니다. 여러분 안에 계시는 그분은 세상에 와 있는 자보다 크시기 때문입니다. 5 그들은 세상에 속하기 때문에 세속적인 관점에서 말하고, 세상 사람들은 그들의 말에 귀를 기울입니다. 6 그러나 우리는 하나님께 속합니다. 누구든지 하나님을 아는 사람은 우리의 말에 귀를 기울입니다. 그러나 누구든지 하나님께 속하지 않은 사람은 우리의 말에 귀를 기울이지 않습니다. 이로써 우리는 어떤 사람이 진리의 성령을 가졌는지 거짓의 영을 가졌는지 가릴 수 있습니다.
하나님은 사랑의 근원이시다
7 사랑하는 여러분, 우리는 서로 사랑합시다. 사랑은 하나님께로부터 옵니다. 사랑하는 사람은 모두 하나님께로부터 났고 하나님을 압니다. 8 누구든지 사랑하지 않는 사람은 하나님을 알지 못합니다. 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다. 9 하나님은 하나뿐인 당신의 아들을 세상에 보내셔서, 우리로 하여금 아들을 통해서 생명을 얻게 하셨습니다. 이렇게 해서 하나님께서는 우리에 대한 사랑을 드러내셨습니다. 10 이제 이것이 진정한 사랑이니, 곧 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하셔서 우리의 죄를 없애 주시려고 당신의 아들을 희생 제물로 보내신 것입니다.
11 사랑하는 여러분, 하나님이 우리를 이처럼 사랑하시니 우리도 서로 사랑해야 합니다. 12 하나님을 본 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 서로 사랑하면, 그것은 하나님께서 우리 안에 계시고, 그분의 사랑이 우리 안에서 이미 완성되어 있다는 것을 나타냅니다.
13 하나님은 당신의 성령을 우리에게 보내 주셨습니다. 그래서 우리는, 우리가 하나님 안에 살고 있고, 하나님이 우리 안에 계신다는 것을 압니다. 14 우리는 아버지께서 아들을 구세주로 보내신 것을 보았고 또 증언하고 있습니다. 15 누구든지 예수께서 하나님의 아들이시라는 것을 고백하면, 하나님께서는 그 사람 안에 사시고 그 사람은 하나님 안에 삽니다. 16 그리하여 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 향하여 품으신 사랑을 알고, 그 사랑에 의지합니다.
하나님은 사랑이십니다. 누구든지 사랑 안에 사는 사람은 하나님 안에 살고, 하나님께서는 그 사람 안에 사십니다. 17 이렇게 하여 하나님의 사랑이 우리 가운데서 완성됩니다. 이제 이 세상에서 우리가 그분과 같이 되었으니, 하나님께서 우리를 심판하시는 날에 우리는 자신을 가질 수 있을 것입니다. 18 사랑에는 두려움이 없습니다. 오히려 완전한 사랑은 두려움을 몰아냅니다. 우리가 두려움을 갖게 되는 것은 하나님의 벌을 두려워하기 때문입니다. 그러므로 두려움을 느끼는 사람은, 하나님의 사랑이 그 사람 안에서 완성되지 못한 사람입니다.
19 우리가 사랑하는 것은 하나님께서 우리를 먼저 사랑하셨기 때문입니다. 20 “나는 하나님을 사랑한다.” 고 말하면서 그리스도를 믿는 형제나 자매를 미워하면 그 사람은 거짓말쟁이입니다. 눈으로 보는 형제도 사랑하지 않으면서, 눈으로 볼 수 없는 하나님을 사랑할 수는 없기 때문입니다. 21 누구든지 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 자기의 형제도 사랑해야 합니다. 이것이 우리가 하나님에게서 받은 계명입니다.

El espíritu de la verdad y el espíritu del error
4 Amados, no creáis a todo espíritu, sino probad si los espíritus proceden de Dios; porque muchos falsos profetas han salido al mundo.
2 En esto conoced el Espíritu de Dios: Todo espíritu que confiesa que Jesucristo ha venido en carne, procede de Dios;
3 y todo espíritu que no confiesa que Jesucristo ha venido en carne, no procede de Dios; y éste es el espíritu del anticristo, el cual habéis oído que viene, y que ahora ya está en el mundo.
4 Hijitos, vosotros procedéis de Dios, y los habéis vencido; porque mayor es el que está en vosotros, que el que está en el mundo.
5 Ellos son del mundo; por eso hablan como del mundo, y el mundo los oye.
6 Nosotros somos de Dios; el que conoce a Dios, nos oye; el que no es de Dios, no nos oye. En esto conocemos el espíritu de la verdad y el espíritu del error.
Dios es amor
7 Amados, amémonos unos a otros; porque el amor es de Dios, y todo aquel que ama es nacido de Dios y conoce a Dios.
8 El que no ama no ha conocido a Dios, porque Dios es amor.
9 En esto se mostró el amor de Dios para con nosotros, en que Dios envió a su Hijo unigénito al mundo, para que vivamos por medio de él.
10 En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que él nos amó a nosotros, y envió a su Hijo como propiciación por nuestros pecados.
11 Amados, si Dios nos ha amado así, también nosotros debemos amarnos unos a otros.
12 Nadie ha visto jamás a Dios. Si nos amamos unos a otros, Dios permanece en nosotros, y su amor se ha perfeccionado en nosotros.
13 En esto conocemos que permanecemos en él, y él en nosotros, en que nos ha dado de su Espíritu.
14 Y nosotros hemos visto y testificamos que el Padre ha enviado al Hijo como Salvador del mundo.
15 Todo aquel que confiese que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, Dios permanece en él, y él en Dios.
16 Y nosotros hemos conocido y creído el amor que Dios tiene para con nosotros. Dios es amor; y el que permanece en el amor, permanece en Dios, y Dios en él.
17 En esto se ha perfeccionado el amor en nosotros, para que tengamos confianza en el día del juicio; pues como él es, así somos nosotros en este mundo.
18 En el amor no hay temor, sino que el perfecto amor echa fuera al temor; porque el temor comporta castigo, y el que teme, no ha sido perfeccionado en el amor.
19 Nosotros le amamos a él, porque él nos amó primero.
20 Si alguno dice: Yo amo a Dios, y aborrece a su hermano, es mentiroso. Pues el que no ama a su hermano a quien ha visto, ¿cómo puede amar a Dios a quien no ha visto?
21 Y nosotros tenemos este mandamiento de parte de él: El que ama a Dios, ame también a su hermano.

Good News Translation
The True Spirit and the False Spirit
4 My dear friends, do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit, but test them to find out if the spirit they have comes from God. For many false prophets have gone out everywhere. 2 This is how you will be able to know whether it is God's Spirit: anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ came as a human being has the Spirit who comes from God. 3 But anyone who denies this about Jesus does not have the Spirit from God. The spirit that he has is from the Enemy of Christ; you heard that it would come, and now it is here in the world already.
4 But you belong to God, my children, and have defeated the false prophets, because the Spirit who is in you is more powerful than the spirit in those who belong to the world. 5 Those false prophets speak about matters of the world, and the world listens to them because they belong to the world. 6 But we belong to God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever does not belong to God does not listen to us. This, then, is how we can tell the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
God Is Love
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. 10 This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven.
11 Dear friends, if this is how God loved us, then we should love one another. 12 (A)No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us, and his love is made perfect in us.
13 We are sure that we live in union with God and that he lives in union with us, because he has given us his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and tell others that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If we declare that Jesus is the Son of God, we live in union with God and God lives in union with us. 16 And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us.
God is love, and those who live in love live in union with God and God lives in union with them. 17 Love is made perfect in us in order that we may have courage on the Judgment Day; and we will have it because our life in this world is the same as Christ's. 18 There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.
19 We love because God first loved us. 20 If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen. 21 The command that Christ has given us is this: whoever loves God must love others also.
