2 나의 믿음의 자녀들이여, 여러분이 죄를 짓지 않게 하려고 나는 이 편지를 씁 니다. 그러나 만일 누가 죄를 짓더라도 아버지 앞에서 우리를 변호해 주시는 의로우신 예수 그리스도가 계십니다.
2 그분은 우리 죄를 위해 [a]화해의 제물이 되셨습니다. 우리 죄만 아니라 온 세상의 죄를 위해 그렇게 되신 것입니다.
믿음을 증명하는 것
3 우리가 하나님의 계명을 지키면 이것으로 우리는 그분을 안다는 확신을 갖게 됩니다.
4 하나님을 안다고 하면서 그분의 계명을 지키지 않는 사람은 거짓말쟁이며 진리가 그 속에 있지 않습니다.
5 그러나 누구든지 하나님의 말씀을 지키면 하나님의 사랑이 그에게서 완전해집니다. 이것으로 우리는 그분 안에 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.
6 하나님 안에서 산다고 하는 사람은 예수님이 사신 것과 똑같이 살아야 합니다.
7 사랑하는 여러분, 내가 여러분에게 새 계명을 쓰는 것이 아니라 여러분이 처음부터 가졌던 옛 계명을 쓰고 있습니다. 이 옛 계명은 여러분이 이미 들은 말씀입니다.
8 그러나 내가 다시 여러분에게 새 계명을 씁니다. 어두움이 지나가고 참 빛이 벌써 비치고 있으므로 그 계명은 그리스도와 여러분에게 참된 것입니다.
9 빛 가운데 산다고 하면서 형제를 미워하면 아직도 어두움 속에 사는 사람입니다.
10 형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 가운데 살기 때문에 자기에게 거리낄 만한 것이 없습니다.
11 그러나 형제를 미워하는 사람은 아직도 어두움 속에 있고 어두움 속에서 살고 있는 것입니다. 어두움이 그의 눈을 멀게 했기 때문에 그는 자기가 어디로 가고 있는지 알지 못합니다.
12 자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분의 죄가 예수님의 이름으로 용서를 받기 때문입니다.
13 [b]부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 세상이 창조되기 전부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 악한 자를 이겼기 때문입니다.
14 자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 [c]쓰는 것은 여러분이 하나님 아버지를 알고 있기 때문입니다. 부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 맨 처음부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 언제나 하나님의 말씀에 굳게 서서 마귀를 이겼기 때문입니다.
세상을 사랑하지 말아라
15 여러분은 세상이나 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 그 사람에게는 하나님 아버지에 대한 사랑이 없습니다.
16 세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육신의 정욕과 눈의 욕심과 삶에 대한 자랑은 모두 아버지에게서 나온 것이 아니라 세상에서 나온 것입니다.
17 이 세상도 그것에 대한 욕망도 다 지나가지만 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 삽니다.
18 자녀들이여, 지금은 마지막 때입니다. 여러분도 그리스도의 원수가 온다는 말을 들었지만 이미 많은 원수들이 나타났습니다. 그래서 우리는 마지막 때가 된 것을 압니다.
19 그들은 우리에게 속하지 않았으므로 우리 가운데서 나갔습니다. 만일 그들이 우리에게 속하였다면 우리와 함께 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 그들이 우리에게서 떨어져 나감으로 우리에게 속하지 않은 것이 드러났습니다.
20 여러분은 거룩하신 분에게서 [d]성령을 받아 이 모든 것을 알고 있습니다.
21 내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 것은 여러분이 진리를 몰라서가 아니라 오히려 여러분이 진리를 알고 거짓은 진리에서 나오는 것이 아님을 알고 있기 때문입니다.
22 거짓말하는 사람이 누굽니까? 예수님이 그리스도라는 것을 부정하는 사람이 아닙니까? 하나님 아버지와 아들을 모른다고 하는 사람이 바로 그리스도의 원수입니다.
23 아들을 모른다고 하는 사람은 아버지를 모시지 못하고 아들을 인정하는 사람은 아버지를 모시고 있는 것입니다.
24 여러분은 처음부터 들은 것을 잊지 않도록 하십시오. 그러면 여러분도 아들과 하나님 아버지 안에서 살게 될 것입니다.
25 이것이 바로 그리스도께서 직접 우리에게 약속해 주신 영원한 생명입니다.
26 여러분을 속이려는 사람들에 대하여 내가 이것을 썼습니다.
27 여러분에게는 그리스도께서 부어 주신 성령이 있기 때문에 아무에게서도 가르침을 받을 필요가 없습니다. 성령께서 여러분에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 주십니다. 그분의 가르치심은 참되고 거짓이 없습니다. 그러므로 성령님이 가르치신 대로 여러분은 언제나 그리스도 안에서 생활하십시오.
28 자녀들이여, 여러분은 그리스도 안에서 사십시오. 그러면 그리스도께서 다시 오실 때 부끄러움을 당하지 않고 떳떳이 그분을 뵙게 될 것입니다.
29 하나님이 의로우신 분이라는 것을 안다면 의롭게 사는 사람들이 모두 그분의 자녀들이라는 것을 잊지 마십시오.

2 My dear children,(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(D)
Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers
3 We know(E) that we have come to know him(F) if we keep his commands.(G) 4 Whoever says, “I know him,”(H) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(I) 5 But if anyone obeys his word,(J) love for God[a] is truly made complete in them.(K) This is how we know(L) we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(M)
7 Dear friends,(N) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.(O) This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command;(P) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing(Q) and the true light(R) is already shining.(S)
9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[b](T) is still in the darkness.(U) 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[c] lives in the light,(V) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.(W) 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister(X) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.(Y) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.(Z)
Reasons for Writing
12 I am writing to you, dear children,(AA)
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.(AB)
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AC)
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome(AD) the evil one.(AE)
14 I write to you, dear children,(AF)
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AG)
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,(AH)
and the word of God(AI) lives in you,(AJ)
and you have overcome the evil one.(AK)
On Not Loving the World
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(AL) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[d] is not in them.(AM) 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(AN) the lust of the eyes,(AO) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away,(AP) but whoever does the will of God(AQ) lives forever.
Warnings Against Denying the Son
18 Dear children, this is the last hour;(AR) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,(AS) even now many antichrists have come.(AT) This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us,(AU) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.(AV)
20 But you have an anointing(AW) from the Holy One,(AX) and all of you know the truth.[e](AY) 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it(AZ) and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.(BA) 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.(BB)
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning(BC) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.(BD) 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.(BE)
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.(BF) 27 As for you, the anointing(BG) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things(BH) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.(BI)
God’s Children and Sin
28 And now, dear children,(BJ) continue in him, so that when he appears(BK) we may be confident(BL) and unashamed before him at his coming.(BM)
29 If you know that he is righteous,(BN) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.(BO)
