1 장로[a]인 나는 택하심을 받은 부인[b]과 부인의 자녀들에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 진리[c] 안에서 여러분 모두를 사랑합니다. 나뿐 아니라 진리를 아는 모든 사람이 여러분을 사랑합니다. 2 우리가 여러분을 사랑하는 것은, 지금도 우리 안에 살고 있으며 영원히 우리와 함께 있을 그 진리 때문입니다.
3 아버지 하나님과 그분의 아들 예수 그리스도께서 내려 주시는 은혜와 자비와 평화가, 진리와 사랑 안에서 우리와 함께 있을 것입니다.
4 그대의 자녀들 가운데 아버지께서 우리에게 명하신 대로 진리를 좇아 사는 사람들이 있다는 것을 알고 나는 무척 기뻤습니다. 5 사랑하는 부인이여, 내가 이제 그대에게 간절히 부탁합니다. 우리 모두 서로를 사랑합시다. 이것은 내가 새로이 써 보내는 계명이 아니라, 처음부터 우리에게 있었던 계명입니다. 6 사랑은 다름 아니라 하나님의 계명을 따라 사는 것입니다. 그리고 그 계명은 여러분이 처음부터 들은 대로 사랑 안에 살아야 한다는 것입니다.
7 많은 거짓 선생들이 세상으로 나갔습니다. 이들은 예수 그리스도께서 사람의 몸으로 오셨다는 것을 인정하지 않습니다. 그런 사람은 모두 속이는 자이고 그리스도의 적입니다. 8 조심하십시오! 조심하여, 우리가[d] 얻으려고 애써 온 것을 잃지 않고, 받아야 할 상을 다 받도록 하십시오.
9 누구든지 그리스도의 가르침 안에 머물지 않고 앞질러 나가는 사람은 하나님을 모시지 않은 사람입니다. 그러나 그 가르침 안에 머무는 사람은 아버지와 아들 두 분을 다 모시고 있는 사람입니다. 10 만일 누가 여러분을 찾아가서 이 교훈과 다른 것을 전하거든, 그런 사람은 집에 들이지도 말고 반갑게 맞이하지도 마십시오. 11 그런 자를 반갑게 맞이하는 것은 그가 하는 악한 일에 참여하는 것입니다.
12 내가 여러분에게 쓸 말이 많습니다. 그러나 종이와 먹으로 써 보내고 싶지 않습니다. 차라리 내가 여러분을 찾아가서 얼굴을 마주 보며 이야기를 나누고 싶습니다. 그렇게 하여 우리의 기쁨이 넘치게 하려는 것입니다. 13 하나님께 택하심을 받은 그대의 자매의 자녀들이 그대에게 문안합니다.

1 The elder,(A)
To the lady chosen by God(B) and to her children, whom I love in the truth(C)—and not I only, but also all who know the truth(D)— 2 because of the truth,(E) which lives in us(F) and will be with us forever:
3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ,(G) the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(H) just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(I) I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love:(J) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(K) As you have heard from the beginning,(L) his command is that you walk in love.
7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(M) as coming in the flesh,(N) have gone out into the world.(O) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(P) 8 Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(Q) 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(R) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(S) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(T) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(U) in their wicked work.
12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face,(V) so that our joy may be complete.(W)
13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God,(X) send their greetings.

Greeting
1 (A)The elder to the elect lady and her children, (B)whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who (C)know (D)the truth, 2 (E)because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:
3 (F)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.
Walking in Truth and Love
4 (G)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 And now I ask you, dear lady—(H)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(I)that we love one another. 6 And (J)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (K)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7 For (L)many deceivers (M)have gone out into the world, (N)those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, (O)so that you may not lose what we[a] have worked for, but (P)may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, (Q)does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching (R)has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, (S)do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him (T)takes part in his wicked works.
Final Greetings
12 (U)Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. (V)Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, (W)so that our joy may be complete.
