1 장로[a]인 나는 사랑하는 친구 가이오에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 그대를 진리[b] 안에서 사랑합니다.
2 사랑하는 친구여, 그대의 모든 일이 잘되어 가기를 기도합니다. 그리고 그대의 영혼이 건강한 것처럼 그대의 몸도 건강하기를 바랍니다. 3 교우 몇 사람이 나에게 와서, 그대가 언제나 진리의 길을 좇아 왔듯이, 지금도 진리에 충실하다고 말해 주었습니다. 나는 그 소식을 듣고 무척 기뻤습니다. 4 내 자녀들이 진리를 좇아 살고 있다는 말을 듣는 것보다 더 기쁜 일은 없습니다.
5 사랑하는 친구여, 그대는 그리스도 안에 있는 형제나 자매를 돕는 일을 충성스럽게 잘 하고 있습니다. 특히 그대가 모르는 형제들까지도 그렇게 돕고 있습니다. 6 그대의 도움을 받은 형제들이 이곳의 교우들 앞에서 그대가 베푼 사랑에 대하여 증언하였습니다. 그들에게 필요한 것이 있으면, 하나님께서 흐뭇해하실 정도로 그들에게 주어서 떠나보내는 것이 좋겠습니다. 7 그들은 그리스도에 관한 것을 전하려고 나선 사람들로서, 믿지 않는 사람들에게서는 어떤 도움도 받지 않습니다. 8 그러므로 우리가 이런 형제들을 도와주는 것이 마땅합니다. 그래야 우리가 진리를 위해서 그들과 함께 일하는 사람들이 될 것입니다.
9 나는 그 교회에 편지를 써 보냈습니다. 그러나 디오드레베가 우두머리가 되고 싶어한 나머지 우리의 권위를 인정하려 하지 않습니다. 10 그래서 내가 가면, 디오드레베가 저지르고 있는 일들을 낱낱이 들추어내겠습니다. 그는 못된 생각을 품고 우리를 헐뜯고 있습니다. 그는 거기에 만족하지 않고, 형제들을 받아들이기를 거부하고 있습니다. 그는 형제들을 받아들이려는 사람들을 그렇게 하지 못하도록 막을 뿐 아니라, 심지어 그들을 교회 밖으로 내쫓기까지 합니다.
11 사랑하는 친구여, 악한 것을 본받지 말고 선한 것을 본받으십시오. 누구든지 선한 일을 하는 사람은 하나님께로부터 온 사람입니다. 그러나 악한 일을 하는 사람은 하나님을 뵌 적이 없는 사람입니다.
12 데메드리오는 모든 사람에게 칭찬을 받고 있습니다. 심지어 진리 자체에게서도 칭찬을 받고 있습니다. 우리 또한 그를 칭찬합니다. 그대는 우리의 증언이 진실하다는 것을 알고 있습니다.
13 그대에게 써 보내고 싶은 말이 많지만, 종이와 먹을 써서 말하고 싶지 않습니다. 14 머지않아 그대와 만나 얼굴을 마주 보며 이야기를 나눌 수 있기를 바랍니다.
15 그대에게 평화가 함께하기를 빕니다. 이곳에 있는 친구들이 그대에게 문안합니다. 그곳에 있는 친구 한 사람 한 사람에게도 문안하여 주십시오.

1 The elder,(A)
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) 6 They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)
11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)
13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(T)
15 Peace to you.(U) The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.(V)

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
