간음한 여자가 용서받음
8 그러나 예수님은 감람산으로 가셨다.
2 다음날 이른 아침에 예수님이 다시 성전으로 오시자 사람들이 예수님에게 몰려들었다. 그래서 예수님이 앉아 그들을 가르치고 계시는데
3 [a]율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들이 간음하다가 잡힌 한 여자를 끌고 와서 가운데 세우고
4 “선생님, 이 여자는 간음하다가 현장에서 잡혔습니다.
5 모세의 법에는 이런 여자를 돌로 쳐죽이라고 했는데 선생님은 어떻게 생각하십니까?” 하고 물었다.
6 그들이 이런 질문을 한 것은 예수님을 시험하여 고발할 구실을 찾기 위해서였다. 그러나 예수님은 몸을 굽혀 손가락으로 땅바닥에 무엇인가 쓰고 계셨다.
7 그래도 그들이 계속해서 질문을 하자 예수님은 일어나 “너희 가운데 죄 없는 사람이 먼저 그 여자를 돌로 쳐라” 하시고
8 다시 몸을 굽혀 땅바닥에 무엇인가 계속 쓰셨다.
9 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 그들은 [b]양심의 가책을 받아 나이 많은 사람으로부터 시작하여 하나씩 둘씩 모두 가 버리고 예수님과 거기에 서 있는 여자만 남았다.
10 예수님께서 일어나 그 여자에게 “그들이 어디 있느냐? 너를 죄인 취급한 사람은 없느냐?” 하고 물으시자
11 그녀는 “주님, 없습니다” 하고 대답하였다. 그때 예수님은 “그렇다면 나도 너를 죄인 취급하지 않겠다. 가서 다시는 죄를 짓지 말아라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
12 후에 예수님은 사람들에게 다시 말씀하셨다. “나는 세상의 빛이다. 나를 따르는 사람은 어두움에 다니지 않고 생명의 빛을 받을 것이다.”
13 그러자 바리새파 사람들이 예수님께 “당신이 자기를 증거하고 있으니 당신의 증거는 진실하지 못하오” 하였다.
14 그래서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “나는 내가 어디서 와서 어디로 가고 있는지를 알기 때문에 내가 나를 증거한다고 해도 내 증거는 참된 것이다. 그러나 너희는 내가 어디서 와서 어디로 가는지를 모른다.
15 너희는 [c]사람의 표준대로 판단하지만 나는 아무도 판단하지 않는다.
16 내가 만일 판단하더라도 내 판단이 옳은 것은 내가 혼자 있는 것이 아니라 나를 보내신 아버지께서 나와 함께 계시기 때문이다.
17 너희 율법에도 두 사람의 증거는 참된 것이라고 기록되어 있다.
18 내가 나를 증거하기도 하지만 나를 보내신 아버지께서도 나를 증거해 주신다.”
19 이 말씀을 듣고 그들이 “당신의 아버지가 어디 있소?” 하고 묻자 예수님은 그들에게 “너희는 나를 알지 못하고 내 아버지도 모른다. 만일 너희가 나를 알았다면 내 아버지도 알았을 것이다” 하고 대답하셨다.
20 예수님은 성전에서 가르치실 때 헌금
함 앞에서 이 말씀을 하셨으나 아직 그분의 때가 되지 않았으므로 예수님을 잡는 사람이
아무도 없었다.
21 예수님은 그들에게 다시 말씀하셨다. “나는 떠나간다. 너희는 나를 찾다가 너희 죄 가운데서 죽을 것이다. 내가 가는 곳에는 너희가 올 수 없다.”
22 그때 유대인들이 “자기가 가는 곳에는 우리가 가지 못한다고 하니 이 사람이 자살이라도 하겠다는 건가?” 하자
23 예수님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 아래서 났고 나는 위에서 났으며 너희는 이 세상에 속하였고 나는 이 세상에 속하지 않았다.
24 그래서 내가 너희는 너희 죄 가운데서 죽을 것이라고 말하였다. 만일 너희가 나를 [d]그리스도로 믿지 않으면 너희가 정말 너희 죄 가운데서 죽을 것이다.”
25 그때 그들이 “도대체 당신은 누구요?” 하고 물었다. 그래서 예수님이 이렇게 대답하셨다. “내가 누군지 처음부터 너희에게 말하지 않았느냐?
26 내가 너희에 대해서 할 말도 많고 판단할 것도 많지만 나를 보내신 분이 참되시므로 나는 그분에게서 들은 것만 세상에 말한다.”
27 그들은 예수님이 하나님 아버지에 대해서 말씀하셨다는 것을 깨닫지 못하였다.
28 그러므로 예수님이 다시 말씀하셨다. “너희가 [e]나를 십자가에 못박아 죽인 다음에야 비로소 내가 [f]그리스도라는 것과 또 내가 아무것도 스스로 말하지 않고 아버지께서 가르쳐 주신 대로 말한다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.
29 나를 보내신 분이 나와 함께하신다. 내가 항상 그분이 기뻐하시는 일을 하기 때문에 그분은 나를 혼자 버려 두지 않으셨다.”
30 이 말씀을 듣고 많은 사람이 예수님을 믿었다.
진리가 자유롭게 함
31 그래서 예수님이 자기를 믿는 유대인들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 내 말대로 살면 참으로 내 제자가 되어
32 진리를 알게 될 것이며 그 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다.”
33 “우리는 아브라함의 후손으로 남의 종이 된 적이 없는데 어째서 당신은 우리가 자유를 얻게 될 것이라고 말하시오?”
34 “내가 분명히 너희에게 말한다. 죄를 짓는 사람은 누구나 다 죄의 종이다.
35 종은 주인 집에서 영구히 머물러 있을 수 없지만 아들은 그 집에서 영원히 산다.
36 그러므로 아들이 너희에게 자유를 주면 너희는 진정으로 자유로운 사람이 될 것이다.
37 너희가 아브라함의 후손이라는 것은 나도 알고 있다. 그러나 너희가 내 말을 받아들이지 않기 때문에 나를 죽이려고 한다.
38 나는 내 [g]아버지 앞에서 본 것을 말하고 너희는 너희 아비에게 들은 것을 행한다.”
39 “우리 아버지는 아브라함이오.” “너희가 아브라함의 자손이라면 아브라함을 본받아야 하지 않느냐?
40 그러나 너희는 지금 하나님에게서 들은 진리를 말한 나를 죽이려 하고 있다. 아브라함은 이렇게 하지 않았다.
41 너희는 너희 아비가 하는 짓을 하고 있다.” “우리는 사생아가 아니오. 우리 아버지는 하나님 한 분뿐이오.”
42 그래서 예수님이 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희 아버지가 정말 하나님이시라면 너희가 나를 사랑했을 것이다. 이것은 내가 하나님에게서 나와 이 곳에 왔기 때문이다. 나는 내 마음대로 온 것이 아니고 아버지께서 나를 보내셨다.
43 왜 너희는 내 말을 이해하지 못하느냐? 이것은 너희가 내 말을 알아들을 수 없기 때문이다.
44 너희는 너희 아비인 마귀의 자식이므로 너희 아비가 원하는 것을 하고 싶어한다. 그는 처음부터 살인자였다. 그에게는 진리가 없으므로 그가 진리의 편에 서지 못한다. 그는 거짓말을 할 때마다 자기 본성을 드러낸다. 이것은 그가 거짓말쟁이며 거짓의 아비이기 때문이다.
45 너희는 내가 진리를 말하기 때문에 나를 믿지 않는다.
46 너희 중에 내게서 죄를 찾아낼 사람이 누구냐? 내가 진리를 말하는데도 왜 나를 믿지 않느냐?
47 하나님께 속한 사람은 하나님의 말씀을 듣는다. 그러나 너희가 듣지 않는 것은 하나님께 속하지 않았기 때문이다.”
48 그때 유대인들이 예수님께 “우리가 당신을 사마리아 사람이며 귀신 들린 사람이라고 하는 것이 옳지 않소?” 하자
49 예수님이 이렇게 대답하셨다. “내가 귀신 들린 것이 아니라 내 아버지를 공경하는데도 너희는 나를 멸시하고 있다.
50 나는 내 자신의 영광을 구하지 않는다. 그것을 구하고 판단하시는 분은 하나님이시다.
51 내가 분명히 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 내 말을 지키면 영원히 죽지 않을 것이다.”
52 그러자 유대인들이 대꾸하였다. “이제 보니 당신은 귀신이 들려도 단단히 들렸소. 아브라함도 예언자들도 다 죽었는데 당신의 말을 지키면 영원히 죽지 않는다니
53 그렇다면 당신이 죽은 우리 조상 아브라함보다 위대하단 말이오? 예언자들도 죽었는데 도대체 당신은 누구란 말이오?”
54 그래서 예수님이 다시 말씀하셨다. “내가 내 자신에게 영광을 돌리면 그것은 아무 가치도 없다. 나를 영광스럽게 하시는 분은 바로 너희가 너희 하나님이라고 부르는 내 아버지이시다.
55 너희는 그분을 모르지만 나는 알고 있다. 만일 내가 그분을 모른다고 하면 나도 너희처럼 거짓말쟁이가 되고 말 것이다. 그러나 나는 그분을 알고 그분의 말씀을 지키고 있다.
56 너희 조상 아브라함은 내 날을 보리라는 생각에 즐거워하다가 마침내 보고 기뻐하였다.”
57 이때 유대인들이 “당신은 아직 쉰 살도 못 되었는데 아브라함을 보았단 말이오?” 하고 묻자
58 예수님은 “내가 분명히 너희에게 말하지만 나는 아브라함이 나기 전부터 있다” 하고 대답하셨다.
59 그러자 그들이 돌을 들어 예수님을 치려고 하였다. 그러나 예수님은 몸을 피해 성전 밖으로 나가셨다.

Uma mulher apanhada em pleno adultério
8 Jesus voltou para o monte das Oliveiras. 2 Contudo, logo no dia seguinte, de manhã cedo, encontrava-se de novo no templo. Em breve se juntou uma multidão e, sentando-se, começou a falar-lhes. 3 Enquanto falava, os especialistas na Lei e os fariseus trouxeram-lhe uma mulher apanhada em adultério e puseram-na diante do povo:
4 “Mestre, esta mulher foi apanhada em flagrante adultério. 5 A Lei de Moisés ordena que a apedrejemos. Que dizes?”
6 Procuravam, assim, levá-lo a afirmar alguma coisa que pudessem usar contra ele. Jesus, baixando-se, pôs-se a escrever na terra com a ponta do dedo. 7 Eles teimavam em ter uma resposta. Então, endireitando-se, disse: “Está bem, apedrejem-na, mas que a primeira pedra seja lançada por aquele que nunca tenha pecado!” 8 E curvando-se de novo continuou a escrever no pó do chão.
9 E começaram a afastar-se um a um, principiando pelos mais velhos, até que ficou só Jesus com aquela mulher. 10 Tornando a erguer-se, e vendo apenas a mulher, perguntou-lhe: “Onde estão os teus acusadores? Nem um sequer te condenou?”
11 “Não, Senhor!”
Jesus disse-lhe: “Também eu não te condeno. Vai e não tornes a pecar!”
A validade do testemunho de Jesus
12 Numa outra ocasião, Jesus disse ao povo: “Eu sou a luz do mundo. Quem me segue não andará em trevas, mas terá a luz da vida.”
13 Os fariseus exclamaram: “Falas de ti próprio, por isso, o teu testemunho não tem valor!”
14 Jesus disse-lhes: “O que afirmo acerca de mim mesmo é verdadeiro, embora seja eu a dizê-lo, pois sei donde vim e para onde vou, e isso não sabem vocês acerca de mim. 15 Julgam-me, mas de uma forma humana. Contudo, eu não julgo ninguém. 16 Mesmo que eu julgue, o meu julgamento é justo, pois tenho comigo o Pai que me enviou. 17 Na vossa Lei está escrito que, se dois homens concordarem um com o outro acerca de qualquer coisa, o seu testemunho é aceite como verdadeiro. 18 Pois bem: Eu sou uma testemunha e a outra é o meu Pai que me enviou!”
19 “Onde está o teu Pai?”, perguntaram. Jesus respondeu: “Não sabem quem sou, portanto, não conhecem o meu Pai. Se me conhecessem, conhecê-lo-iam também a ele.”
20 Jesus disse estas coisas no local do templo onde eram recolhidas as ofertas. Ninguém o prendeu, porque não tinha chegado a sua hora.
21 Disse-lhes outra vez: “Vou-me embora. Procurar-me-ão e morrerão nos vossos pecados. Para onde eu vou não podem vocês ir.”
22 Os judeus perguntaram: “Acaso pensa em matar-se? Que quer dizer com aquilo, ‘para onde vou não podem vocês ir?’ ”
23 Ele disse-lhes: “Vocês são cá de baixo e eu sou de cima. Vocês são do mundo e eu não. 24 Por isso, é que disse que haveriam de morrer nos vossos pecados; porque, se não crerem que eu sou quem sou, morrerão nos vossos pecados.”
25 “Declara-nos quem és”, insistiram.
Jesus respondeu: “Eu sou aquele que sempre disse que era. 26 Poderia condenar-vos por muitas coisas; mas eu digo aquilo que me transmite aquele que me enviou; e ele é a verdade.” 27 No entanto, continuavam sem perceber que era de Deus, o Pai, que lhes falava.
28 Então Jesus disse: “Quando tiverem levantado na cruz o Filho do Homem, compreenderão quem eu sou e que não tenho estado a dar-vos as minhas próprias ideias; antes transmiti-vos o que o Pai me ensinou. 29 E aquele que me enviou está comigo; não me abandonou, pois faço sempre o que lhe agrada.”
Os filhos de Abraão
30 Muitos que o ouviram declarar estas coisas começaram a acreditar que era ele o Cristo. 31 A estes Jesus dizia: “Serão verdadeiramente meus discípulos se viverem obedecendo aos meus ensinos. 32 E conhecerão a verdade e a verdade vos tornará livres.”
33 “Mas nós somos descendentes de Abraão”, tornaram eles, “e nunca fomos escravos de ninguém. Como é que dizes que seremos livres?”
34 Jesus respondeu: “É realmente como vos digo: todo aquele que viva na prática do pecado é um escravo do pecado. 35 E os escravos não pertencem à família. Mas um filho está ligado para sempre à família. 36 Assim, se o Filho vos libertar, ficarão livres, de verdade.
37 Sim, bem sei que são descendentes de Abraão! Contudo, alguns de vocês tentam matar-me, porque a minha mensagem não encontra abrigo nos vossos corações. 38 O que eu vos digo é aquilo que vi junto de meu Pai; mas é o conselho do vosso pai que vocês seguem.”
39 “O nosso pai é Abraão”, declararam.
“Não!”, respondeu Jesus. “Se fossem filhos de Abraão, seguiriam o seu exemplo! 40 Em vez disso, procuram matar-me, apenas por vos ter dito a verdade que ouvi de Deus. Abraão jamais faria uma coisa dessas! 41 Procedendo assim, é ao vosso verdadeiro pai que obedecem.”
Protestaram: “Nós não nascemos de imoralidade sexual; temos um verdadeiro pai que é o próprio Deus.”
Os filhos do Diabo
42 Jesus disse-lhes: “Se Deus fosse o vosso pai, amar-me-iam, porque é da parte de Deus que eu vim. Não estou aqui por resolução minha, antes foi ele que me enviou. 43 Porque não entendem o que vos digo? Porque não podem compreender. 44 Vocês são filhos do vosso pai, o Diabo, e querem praticar a maldade que ele pratica. Desde o princípio ele tem sido homicida e inimigo da verdade; nele não há nada de verdadeiro. Quando ele mente, faz o que lhe é próprio, porque é o pai da mentira. 45 Assim, quando vos digo a verdade, é natural que não acreditem. 46 Qual de vocês me pode acusar com verdade de um único pecado que seja? E, uma vez que vos digo a verdade, porque não acreditam em mim? 47 Todo aquele cujo Pai é Deus escuta as palavras que vêm de Deus. Uma vez que o não fazem, isso só prova que não são de Deus.”
Jesus fala de si próprio
48 O povo retorquiu: “Bem dizemos nós que és samaritano e que tens demónio!”
49 “Não”, disse Jesus, “não tenho demónio, porque honro o meu Pai, mas vocês desonram-me. 50 E, embora não procure a minha glória, há quem a procure e quem julgue. 51 É realmente como vos digo: quem guarda as minhas palavras não verá a morte!”
52 Os judeus exclamaram: “Agora sabemos que estás possuído por um demónio. Até Abraão e os profetas morreram e, contudo, dizes que obedecer-te faz com que uma pessoa não morra. 53 Serás porventura maior do que o nosso pai Abraão que morreu? E do que os profetas que morreram? Quem julgas tu que és?”
54 Jesus respondeu: “Se estivesse simplesmente a glorificar-me a mim próprio, isso não contaria. O meu Pai, a quem chamam vosso Deus, é quem me honra. 55 Mas nem sequer o conhecem; no entanto, eu conheço-o. Se dissesse qualquer outra coisa, seria tão mentiroso como vocês. Mas, na verdade, eu conheço-o e obedeço-lhe. 56 O vosso pai Abraão alegrou-se ao ver o meu dia. Sabia que eu viria e ficou satisfeito!”
57 Os judeus disseram: “Não tens ainda cinquenta anos e viste Abraão?”
58 Jesus replicou: “É realmente como vos digo: ainda antes de Abraão nascer já eu sou![a]” 59 Naquela altura, pegaram em pedras para o matar. Contudo, Jesus escondeu-se e, passando por eles, saiu do templo.

8 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(A)
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.

8 1 y Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. 2 Por la mañana Jesús volvió al templo, y todo el pueblo se le acercó; y él se sentó y les enseñaba. 3 Entonces los escribas y los fariseos le llevaron a una mujer que había sido sorprendida cometiendo adulterio. La pusieron en medio, 4 y le dijeron: «Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo de adulterio. 5 En la ley, Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a mujeres como ésta.(A) ¿Y tú, qué dices?» 6 Ellos decían esto para ponerle una trampa, y así poder acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y, con el dedo, escribía en el suelo. 7 Como ellos insistían en sus preguntas, él se enderezó y les dijo: «Aquel de ustedes que esté sin pecado, que le arroje la primera piedra.» 8 Y Jesús volvió a inclinarse, y siguió escribiendo en el suelo. 9 Ellos, al oír esto, se fueron retirando uno a uno, comenzando por los más viejos y siguiendo por los más jóvenes. Sólo se quedó Jesús, y la mujer permanecía en medio. 10 Entonces Jesús se enderezó y le dijo: «Y, mujer, ¿dónde están todos? ¿Ya nadie te condena?» 11 Ella dijo: «Nadie, Señor.» Entonces Jesús le dijo: «Tampoco yo te condeno. Jesús, la luz del mundo
12 En otra ocasión, Jesús dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo;(B) el que me sigue, no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida.» 13 Entonces los fariseos le dijeron: «Tú das testimonio acerca de ti mismo; tu testimonio no es verdadero.»(C) 14 Jesús les respondió: «Aunque yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio es verdadero, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy; pero ustedes no saben de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy. 15 Ustedes juzgan según criterios humanos; yo no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y si acaso juzgo, mi juicio es verdadero; porque no soy sólo yo, sino el Padre, que me envió, y yo. 17 En la ley de ustedes está escrito que el testimonio de dos hombres es verdadero. 18 Yo soy quien da testimonio de mí mismo, y el Padre, que me envió, da testimonio de mí.» 19 Ellos le dijeron: «¿Y dónde está tu Padre?» Jesús respondió: «Ustedes no me conocen a mí, ni tampoco conocen a mi Padre. Si me conocieran a mí, también conocerían a mi Padre.» 20 Jesús pronunció estas palabras en el lugar de las ofrendas, cuando enseñaba en el templo; y nadie lo aprehendió, porque aún no había llegado su hora.
A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir
21 Una vez más, Jesús les dijo: «Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán; pero en su pecado morirán. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir.» 22 Los judíos decían: «¿Acaso se matará a sí mismo? Pues dice: “A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir.”» 23 Él les dijo: «Ustedes son de aquí abajo; yo soy de allá arriba. Ustedes son de este mundo; yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso les dije que morirán en sus pecados; porque si ustedes no creen que yo soy, en sus pecados morirán.» 25 Ellos le dijeron: «¿Y quién eres tú?» Jesús les respondió: «Lo que desde el principio les he dicho. 26 Mucho es lo que tengo que decir y juzgar de ustedes. Pero el que me envió es verdadero; y yo le digo al mundo lo que de él sé.» 27 Pero ellos no entendieron que les hablaba del Padre. 28 Entonces Jesús les dijo: «Cuando ustedes hayan levantado al Hijo del Hombre, sabrán entonces que yo soy, y que nada hago por mí mismo, sino que hablo según lo que el Padre me enseñó. 29 Porque el que me envió está conmigo, y no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que a él le agrada.» 30 Luego de que él dijo estas cosas, muchos creyeron en él.
La verdad los hará libres
31 Entonces Jesús dijo a los judíos que habían creído en él: «Si ustedes permanecen en mi palabra, serán verdaderamente mis discípulos; 32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.» 33 Le respondieron: «Nosotros somos descendientes de Abrahán,(D) y jamás hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir: “Ustedes serán libres”?»
34 Jesús les respondió: «De cierto, de cierto les digo, que todo aquel que comete pecado, esclavo es del pecado. 35 Y el esclavo no se queda en la casa para siempre; el hijo sí se queda para siempre. 36 Así que, si el Hijo los liberta, serán verdaderamente libres. 37 Yo sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abrahán; pero intentan matarme porque mi palabra no halla cabida en ustedes. 38 Yo hablo de lo que he visto con el Padre, pero ustedes hacen lo que han oído de parte de su padre.»
39 Ellos le respondieron: «Nuestro padre es Abrahán.» Jesús les dijo: «Si fueran hijos de Abrahán, harían las obras de Abrahán. 40 Pero ahora intentan matarme; a mí, que les he dicho la verdad, la cual he escuchado de Dios. Esto no lo hizo Abrahán. 41 Ustedes hacen las obras de su padre.» Entonces le dijeron: «Nosotros no hemos nacido de un acto de inmoralidad. Tenemos un padre, que es Dios.» 42 Y Jesús les dijo: «Si su padre fuera Dios, ciertamente me amarían; porque yo he salido y he venido de Dios. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no entienden mi lenguaje? Pues porque no pueden escuchar mi palabra. 44 Ustedes son de su padre el diablo, y quieren cumplir con los deseos de su padre, quien desde el principio ha sido un homicida. No se mantiene en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando habla mentira, habla de lo que le es propio; porque es mentiroso y padre de la mentira. 45 Pero a mí, que digo la verdad, no me creen. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes puede acusarme de haber pecado? Y si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen? 47 El que es de Dios, escucha las palabras de Dios; pero ustedes no las escuchan, porque no son de Dios.»
La preexistencia de Cristo
48 Los judíos le respondieron: «¿Acaso no tenemos razón al decir que tú eres samaritano, y que tienes un demonio?» 49 Respondió Jesús: «Demonio no tengo. Yo lo que hago es honrar a mi Padre, pero ustedes me deshonran. 50 Y yo no busco mi gloria. Pero hay uno que la busca, y que juzga. 51 De cierto, de cierto les digo que, el que obedece mi palabra, nunca verá la muerte.» 52 Entonces los judíos le dijeron: «Ahora estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Abrahán murió, lo mismo que los profetas; ¿y tú dices: “El que guarda mi palabra, nunca verá la muerte”? 53 ¿Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Abrahán, el cual murió? ¡Y también los profetas murieron! ¿Quién te crees tú?» 54 Jesús respondió: «Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo, mi gloria nada es; pero el que me glorifica es mi Padre, el que ustedes dicen que es su Dios. 55 Ustedes no lo conocen, pero yo sí lo conozco. Y si yo dijera que no lo conozco, sería un mentiroso como ustedes. Pero lo conozco, y obedezco su palabra. 56 Abrahán, el padre de ustedes, se alegró al saber que vería mi día. Y lo vio, y se alegró.» 57 Los judíos le dijeron: «Ni siquiera tienes cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abrahán?» 58 Jesús les dijo: «De cierto, de cierto les digo: Antes de que Abrahán fuera, yo soy.» 59 Entonces tomaron piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se escondió y salió del templo.
