예수와 예수의 형제들
7 이 일이 있고 난 뒤, 예수께서 갈릴리 지방을 두루 다니셨다. 유대 사람들이 자기를 죽이려고 하였기 때문에 유대 지방으로는 가시려 하지 않으셨다. 2 그러나 유대 사람들의 명절인 초막절[a] 이 가까워졌다. 3 예수의 형제들이 예수께 말하였다. “여기를 떠나 유대 지방으로 가서, 형님의 기적을 거기 있는 제자들에게도 보여 주십시오. 4 널리 알려지기를 바라는 사람으로서 숨어서 일하는 사람이 없습니다. 이런 일을 할 바에는 형님을 세상에 드러내십시오.” 5 예수의 형제들까지도 예수를 믿지 않았기 때문에 이렇게 말한 것이다. 6 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내 때가 아직 오지 않았다. 그러나 너희의 때는 언제나 여기 와 있다. 7 세상은 너희를 미워할 수 없으나 나는 미워한다. 그것은 내가, 세상이 하는 짓이 악하다고 증언하기 때문이다. 8 그러니 명절에는 너희나 올라가거라. 나는 내 때가 아직 오지 않았으므로 이번 명절에는 올라가지 않겠다.” 9 예수께서는 이렇게 말씀하시고 갈릴리에 남으셨다.
10 그러나 예수의 형제들이 명절을 지키러 올라간 뒤에, 예수께서는 아무도 모르게 올라가셨다. 11 명절 동안에 유대 사람들은 예수를 찾으면서, “그 사람이 어디 있소?” 하고 물었다.
12 그곳에는 큰 무리가 모여 있었다. 그들 사이에 예수를 두고 수군거리는 말들이 많았다. 어떤 사람들은 “그는 선한 사람이다.” 라고 말하고, 어떤 사람들은 “아니다. 그는 사람들을 속이고 있다.” 라고 말하였다. 13 그러나 어느 누구도 예수를 두고 드러내 놓고 말하지는 못하였다. 유대 사람 지도자들이 두려웠기 때문이다.
예루살렘에서 가르치시다
14 예수께서는 명절이 반쯤 지나서야 성전으로 올라가서 가르치기 시작하셨다. 15 유대 사람들은 놀라서 말하였다. “이 사람은 공부한 적이 없는데 어떻게 저런 학식을 갖추었을까?”
16 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “내 가르침은 내 것이 아니다. 그것은 나를 보내신 분께로부터 오는 것이다. 17 하나님의 뜻에 따라 살려고 하는 사람이라면, 내 가르침이 하나님께로부터 오는 것인지, 또는 내 생각에서 나온 것인지 알 것이다. 18 자기 생각대로 말하는 사람은 자신의 영광을 위하여 그렇게 하는 것이다. 그러나 자기를 보내신 분께 영광을 돌리려고 하는 사람은 진실한 사람이다. 그리고 그에게는 거짓이 하나도 없다. 19 모세가 너희에게 율법[b]을 주지 않았느냐? 그런데 너희 가운데 어느 누구도 그 법을 지키지 않는다. 어찌하여 너희는 나를 죽이려고 하느냐?”
20 무리가 대답하였다. “당신은 악령이 들었소! 누가 당신을 죽이려고 한단 말이오?”
21 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 한 가지 기적을 보였더니, 너희는 그것을 보고 모두 놀랐다. 22 모세가 너희에게 할례에 관한 법을 주었다고 하여, 너희는 안식일에도 아이에게 할례를 베푼다. (그러나 실제로 할례는 모세가 시작한 것이 아니라, 모세보다 앞서 살았던 조상들이 시작한 것이다.) 23 모세가 준 할례에 관한 법을 어기지 않으려고 안식일에도 아이가 할례를 받을 수 있다면, 너희는 어찌하여 내가 안식일에 사람의 온몸을 고쳐 주었다고 하여 내게 화를 내느냐? 24 단순히 겉만 보고 판단하지 말고, 바른 판단을 내려라.”
사람들이 예수가 그리스도인지 궁금히 여기다
25 그러자 몇몇 예루살렘 사람들이 이렇게 말하였다. “이 사람은 저들이 죽이려고 하는 사람이 아닌가? 26 그가 이렇게 드러내 놓고 말하는데도, 저들은 그에게 말 한 마디 못 하고 있다. 지도자들조차 이 사람이 정말로 그리스도라고 생각하는 것일까? 27 우리는 이 사람이 어디서 왔는지 다 알고 있다. 그러나 진짜 그리스도가 오실 때에는, 아무도 그가 어디서 오는지 모를 것이다.”
28 예수께서는 아직도 성전뜰에서 가르치시며 이렇게 외치셨다. “그렇다. 너희는 나를 알고, 내가 어디서 왔는지도 알고 있다. 그러나 나는 내 마음대로 온 것이 아니다. 나를 보내신 분이 정말로 계신다. 너희는 그분을 모른다. 29 그러나 나는 그분을 알고 있다. 나는 그분에게서 왔고, 그분이 나를 보내셨기 때문이다.”
30 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하시자, 그들이 예수를 잡으려고 하였다. 그러나 아무도 그분께 손을 대지는 않았다. 아직 그분의 때가 오지 않았기 때문이다. 31 그러나 무리 가운데 많은 사람이 예수를 믿었다. 그들은 이렇게 말하였다. “그리스도께서 오신다고 하여도, 이분보다 더 많은 표적을 보여 주시겠는가?”
유대 지도자들이 예수를 잡으려 하다
32 사람들이 예수를 두고 이렇게 수군거리는 것을 바리새파 사람들이 들었다. 그래서 높은 제사장들과 바리새파 사람들은 예수를 잡으려고 성전 경비병들을 보냈다. 33 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “내가 너희들과 조금 더 같이 있겠다. 그러고 나서 나를 보내신 분께 돌아가겠다. 34 너희가 나를 찾아도 만나지 못할 것이요, 내가 있는 곳에 올 수도 없을 것이다.”
35 유대 사람들은 이 말을 듣고 서로에게 말하였다. “우리가 자기를 찾지 못할 곳으로 간다니, 이 사람이 어디로 간다는 말일까? 그리스 사람들 가운데 흩어져 사는 우리 동족에게로 가겠다는 말인가? 그곳에 가서 그리스 사람들을 가르치겠다는 말인가? 36 이 사람이 ‘너희가 나를 찾아도 만나지 못할 것이요, 내가 있는 곳에 올 수도 없을 것이다.’ 라고 말하는데, 도대체 무슨 뜻일까?”
성령에 대해 말씀하시다
37 명절의 마지막 날이 되었다. 이날은 명절 가운데 가장 큰 날이었다. 이날에 예수께서 일어서서 큰 소리로 말씀하셨다. “목마른 사람은 모두 나에게 와서 마셔라. 38 누구든지 나를 믿으면, 성경[c] 말씀대로 생명의 물이 흐르는 강이 그 사람 속에서 흘러나올 것이다.” 39 이것은 예수께서 당신을 믿는 사람들이 나중에 받게 될 성령을 두고 하신 말씀이었다. 예수께서 아직 돌아가시지 않아 영광을 받지 않으셨으므로, 그때까지는 성령이 사람들에게 와 계시지 않았다.
사람들이 예수를 두고 논쟁을 벌이다
40 그분의 말씀을 듣고, 무리 가운데 어떤 사람들은 “이 사람은 틀림없이 ‘그 예언자’[d]시다.” 라고 말하였다.
41 어떤 사람들은 “이분은 그리스도시다.” 라고 말하였다.
또 어떤 사람들은 “그리스도가 어떻게 갈릴리에서 나오겠는가? 42 성경도 그리스도가 다윗[e]의 자손으로서, 다윗이 살던 마을 베들레헴에서 나올 것이라고 말하고 있지 않은가?” 하고 말하였다. 43 이렇게 예수 때문에 사람들이 나뉘었다. 44 몇몇 사람이 예수를 잡고 싶어하였으나, 아무도 그분께 손을 대지 못하였다.
유대 지도자들이 믿기를 거부하다
45 마침내 성전 경비병들은 높은 제사장[f]들과 바리새파 사람들에게 돌아갔다. 그들이 경비병들에게 물었다. “어찌하여 예수를 데리고 오지 않았느냐?”
46 경비병들이 대답하였다. “그 어느 누구도 이 사람처럼 말한 적이 없었습니다.”
47 바리새파 사람들이 말하였다. “너희도 예수에게 속아 넘어갔단 말이냐? 48 지도자들이나 바리새파 사람들 가운데서 그를 믿는 사람이 있더냐? 49 그러나 이 어리석은 무리는 율법에 대해서 아무것도 모른다. 그들은 하나님께 저주받은 자들이다.”
50 그들 가운데 한 사람으로서, 전에 예수를 만나러 간 적이 있는 니고데모[g]가 그들에게 말하였다. 51 “우리 법에는 어떤 사람의 말을 듣기 전에는 판결을 내리지 말라고 되어 있습니다. 우리는 그 사람이 무슨 일을 했는지 알아보지도 않고 그런 판결을 내릴 수 없습니다.”
52 그들이 니고데모에게 대답하였다. “당신도 갈릴리에서 왔소? 성경을 자세히 읽어 보시오. 그러면 갈릴리에서 예언자[h]가 나오지 않는다는 것을 알게 될 것이오.”

53 [i] 그러고 나서 그들은 제각기 집으로 돌아갔다.

Jesus’ Brothers Disbelieve
7 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, (A)because the [a]Jews sought to kill Him. 2 (B)Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 (C)His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For (D)even His (E)brothers did not believe in Him.
6 Then Jesus said to them, (F)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 (G)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me (H)because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not [b]yet going up to this feast, (I)for My time has not yet fully come.” 9 When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.
The Heavenly Scholar
10 But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then (J)the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” 12 And (K)there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. (L)Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” 13 However, no one spoke openly of Him (M)for fear of the Jews.
14 Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and (N)taught. 15 (O)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”
16 [c]Jesus answered them and said, (P)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 (Q)If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. 18 (R)He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who (S)seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and (T)no unrighteousness is in Him. 19 (U)Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? (V)Why do you seek to kill Me?”
20 The people answered and said, (W)“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”
21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 (X)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, (Y)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because (Z)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 (AA)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Could This Be the Christ?
25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to (AB)kill? 26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. (AC)Do the rulers know indeed that this is [d]truly the Christ? 27 (AD)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”
28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, (AE)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and (AF)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me (AG)is true, (AH)whom you do not know. 29 [e]But (AI)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
30 Therefore (AJ)they sought to take Him; but (AK)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And (AL)many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”
Jesus and the Religious Leaders
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [f]to them, (AM)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (AN)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (AO)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (AP)cannot come.”
35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (AQ)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
37 (AR)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (AS)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (AT)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (AU)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (AV)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [g]believing in Him would receive; for the [h]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (AW)glorified.
Who Is He?
40 Therefore [i]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (AX)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (AY)the Christ.”
But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (AZ)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (BA)where David was?” 43 So (BB)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (BC)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
Rejected by the Authorities
45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”
46 The officers answered, (BD)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”
47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”
50 Nicodemus (BE)(he who came to [j]Jesus [k]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (BF)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”
52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (BG)no prophet [l]has arisen out of Galilee.”
An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World
53 [m]And everyone went to his own house.
