하늘에서 온 빵
6 그 후 예수님은 디베랴 [a]바다라고도 하는 갈릴리 바다 건너편으로 가셨다.
2 그러자 많은 군중이 병든 사람을 고치는 기적을 보고 예수님을 따랐다.
3 예수님은 산으로 올라가 제자들과 함께 앉으셨다.
4 마침 유대인의 명절인 유월절이 다가왔다.
5 예수님은 수많은 군중이 자기에게 몰려오는 것을 보시고 빌립에게 “이 사람들을 먹일 만한 빵을 우리가 어디서 살 수 있겠느냐?” 하고 물으셨다.
6 사실 예수님은 하실 일을 미리 다 알고 계시면서도 빌립의 마음을 떠보려고 이렇게 물으신 것이다.
7 빌립은 예수님께 “한 사람에게 조금씩 나누어 준다고 해도 [b]200데나리온어치의 빵으로도 부족할 것입니다” 하고 대답하였다.
8 이때 예수님의 제자인 시몬 베드로의 동생 안드레가 예수님께 이렇게 여쭈었다.
9 “여기에 보리빵 다섯 개와 작은 물고기 두 마리를 가진 어린이가 있습니다. 그러나 그것을 가지고 어떻게 이 많은 사람을 먹일 수 있겠습니까?”
10 그러자 예수님이 그들에게 “사람들을 앉게 하라” 하고 말씀하셨다. 그 곳에는 풀이 많아 사람들이 앉았는데 그 수는 약 5,000명쯤 되었다.
11 예수님은 그 빵을 받아 들고 감사 기도를 드리신 다음 앉은 사람들에게 원하는 대로 나눠 주시고 또 물고기도 그렇게 하셨다.
12 사람들이 모두 실컷 먹었을 때 예수님이 제자들에게 “남은 조각을 거두고 버리는 것이 없게 하라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
13 그래서 제자들이 남은 조각을 거둬 보니 보리빵 다섯 개로 먹고 남은 부스러기가 열두 광주리나 되었다.
14 예수님이 베푸신 이 기적을 보고 사람들은 “이분이야말로 세상에 오실 바로 그 예언자이시다!” 하고 외쳤다.
15 예수님은 그들이 강제로 자기를 잡아 그들의 왕을 삼으려 한다는 것을 아시고 혼자서 다시 산으로 올라가셨다.
16 날이 저물자 제자들은 바닷가로 내려가
17 배를 타고 건너편 가버나움을 향해 떠났다. 날이 이미 어두워졌는데도 예수님은 아직 제자들에게 돌아오시지 않았다.
18 그때 강한 바람이 불어 파도가 일기 시작했다.
19 제자들이 배를 저어 [c]4-5킬로미터쯤 갔을 때 예수님이 바다 위로 걸어오셨다. 배로 가까이 오시는 예수님을 보고 제자들이 무서워하자
20 예수님은 그들에게 “나다. 무서워하지 말아라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
21 그래서 제자들은 기뻐하며 예수님을 배에 모셔들였다. 배는 곧 그들이 가려던 곳에 다다랐다.
22 이튿날 바다 건너편에 남아 있던 군중들은 한 척밖에 없던 배로 예 수님은 타시지 않고 제자들만 타고 떠난 것을 알게 되었다.
23 그러나 디베랴에서 다른 배가 몇 척 왔는데 상륙 장소는 주님이 감사 기도를 드리신 후에 군중들이 빵을 먹던 곳에서 가까운 곳이었다.
24 군중들은 거기에 예수님도 제자들도 없는 것을 보고 배를 타고 예수님을 찾아 가버나움으로 떠났다.
25 그들은 바다 건너편에서 예수님을 만나 물었다. “선생님, 언제 이 곳에 오셨습니까?”
26 “내가 너희에게 분명히 말하지만 너희가 나를 찾아온 것은 기적을 보았기 때문이 아니라 빵을 실컷 먹었기 때문이다.
27 썩어 없어지는 양식을 위해 일하지 말고 영원한 생명을 누릴 때까지 있는 양식을 위해 일하라. 이것이 [d]내가 너희에게 줄 양식이다. 하나님 아버지께서는 나를 인정한다는 도장을 나에게 찍어 주셨다.”
28 “우리가 하나님의 일을 하려면 무엇을 해야 합니까?”
29 “하나님이 보내신 자를 믿는 것이 하나님의 일이다.”
30 “그렇다면 우리가 보고 당신을 믿을 수 있도록 당신이 보여 줄 만한 기적이 무엇입니까? 당신이 무슨 일을 하겠느냐는 말입니다.
31 [e]‘모세가 하늘에서 양식을 내려 그들을 먹였다’ 는 성경 말씀대로 우리 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었습니다.”
32 “내가 분명히 말하지만 하늘에서 양식을 내려 너희에게 준 것은 모세가 아니다. 오직 너희에게 하늘의 참된 양식을 주시는 분은 내 아버지이시다.
33 하나님의 양식은 하늘에서 내려온 자가 세상에 생명을 주는 바로 그것이다.”
34 “주님, 그런 양식을 항상 우리에게 주십시오.”
35 그때 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내가 바로 생명의 빵이다. 내게 오는 사람은 굶주리지 않을 것이며 나를 믿는 사람은 절대로 목마르지 않을 것이다.
36 그러나 내가 이미 말했듯이 너희는 나를 보고도 믿지 않는다.
37 아버지께서 내게 주시는 사람은 다 내게로 올 것이며 내게 오는 사람은 내가 절대로 쫓아내지 않을 것이다.
38 내가 하늘에서 내려온 것은 내 뜻을 이루기 위해서가 아니라 나를 보내신 분의 뜻을 이루기 위해서이다.
39 나를 보내신 분의 뜻은 그분이 내게 주신 모든 사람을 하나도 잃지 않고 마지막 날에 다시 살리는 그것이다.
40 사실 내 아버지의 뜻은 아들을 보고 믿는 사람마다 영원한 생명을 얻는 것이다. 그리고 나는 마지막 날에 그들을 다시 살릴 것이다.”
41 예수님이 “내가 하늘에서 내려온 빵이다” 하고 말씀하셨기 때문에 유대인들이 예수님에 대하여 수군거리며
42 “이 사람은 요셉의 아들 예수가 아니냐? 그의 부모를 우리가 다 아는데 어떻게 하늘에서 내려왔다고 하는가?” 하였다.
43 그래서 예수님이 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 서로 수군거리지 말아라.
44 나를 보내신 아버지께서 이끌어 주시지 않으면 아무도 나에게 올 수 없다. 그리고 오는 그 사람은 내가 마지막 날에 다시 살릴 것이다.
45 예언서에는 [f]‘그들이 모두 하나님의 가르치심을 받을 것이다’ 라고 기록되어 있다. 아버지의 말씀을 듣고 배운 사람은 모두 나에게 온다.
46 이것은 아버지를 본 사람이 있다는 뜻이 아니다. 오직 하나님에게서 온 자만 아버지를 보았다.
47 내가 분명히 너희에게 말하지만 나를 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 가졌다.
48 나는 생명의 빵이다.
49 너희 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었으나 모두 죽고 말았다.
50 그러나 하늘에서 내리는 양식을 먹는 사람은 죽지 않는다.
51 나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 빵이다. 누구든지 이 빵을 먹는 사람은 영원히 살 것이다. 이 빵은 곧 세상의 생명을 위해 주는 내 살이다.”
52 그러자 유대인들은 “이 사람이 어떻게 자기 살을 먹으라고 우리에게 줄 수 있겠는가?” 하 고 서로 논쟁하기 시작하였다.
53 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 다시 말씀하셨다. “내가 분명히 너희에게 말하지만 [g]나의 살을 먹지 않고 나의 피를 마시지 않으면 너희 안에 생명이 없다.
54 누구든지 내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 사람은 영원한 생명을 가졌다. 그래서 나는 마지막 날에 그를 다시 살릴 것이다.
55 그것은 내 살이 참된 양식이며 내 피는 참된 음료이기 때문이다.
56 내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 사람은 내 안에 살고 나도 그 사람 안에 산다.
57 살아 계신 아버지께서 나를 보내셔서 내가 아버지 때문에 사는 것과 마찬가지로 나를 먹는 사람도 나 때문에 살 것이다.
58 나는 하늘에서 내려온 빵이다. 너희 조상들은 만나를 먹고도 죽었으나 이것은 그런 것과 같은 것이 아니다. 이 빵을 먹는 사람은 영원히 살 것이다.”
59 이것은 예수님이 가버나움 회당에서 가르치실 때 하신 말씀이다.
60 이 말씀을 듣고 여러 제자들이 “이것은 정말 어려운 말씀이다. 누가 알아들을 수 있겠는가?” 하며 수군거렸다.
61 예수님은 제자들이 이 말씀에 대해서 수군거리는 것을 아시고 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내 말이 너희 귀에 거슬리느냐?
62 만일 내가 전에 있던 곳으로 올라가는 것을 본다면 어떻게 하겠느냐?
63 [h]생명을 주는 것은 하나님의 영이며 인간의 육체는 아무 쓸모가 없다. 내가 너희에게 한 말은 [i]영적인 생명에 관한 것이다.
64 그러나 너희 중에는 믿지 않는 사람들이 있다.” 예수님은 믿지 않는 사람이 누구며 자기를 팔아 넘길 사람이 누군지 처음부터 알고 계셨다.
65 그러고서 예수님은 덧붙여 말씀하셨다. “그러므로 내가 너희에게 아버지께서 오게 해 주시지 않으면 아무도 나에게 올 수 없다고 이미 말하였다.”
66 이 말씀을 듣고 많은 제자들이 예수님을 떠나고 다시는 그와 함께 다니지 않았다.
67 그래서 예수님이 열두 제자에게 “너희도 떠나고 싶으냐?” 하고 물으시자
68 시몬 베드로가 이렇게 대답하였다. “주님, 우리가 누구에게로 가겠습니까? 주님에게는 영원한 생명의 말씀이 있습니다.
69 우리는 주님이 하나님의 거룩하신 아들이라는 것을 믿고 알게 되었습니다.”
70 그때 예수님은 “내가 너희 열둘을 선택하지 않았느냐? 그러나 너희 가운데 한 사람은 마귀다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
71 이것은 가룟 사람 시몬의 아들 유다를 가리켜 하신 말씀이었다. 그는 비록 열두 제자 중 하나였으나 예수님을 팔아 넘길 사람이었다.

6 (A)Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea(B), el de Tiberias(C). 2 Y le seguía una gran multitud, pues veían las señales[a](D) que realizaba en los enfermos. 3 Jesús subió al monte(E) y se sentó allí con sus discípulos. 4 Y estaba cerca la Pascua(F), la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Entonces Jesús, alzando los ojos y viendo que una gran multitud venía hacia Él, dijo* a Felipe(G): ¿Dónde compraremos pan para que coman estos? 6 Pero decía esto para probarlo(H), porque Él sabía lo que iba a hacer. 7 Felipe(I) le respondió: Doscientos denarios[b] de pan(J) no les bastarán para que cada uno reciba un pedazo[c]. 8 Uno de sus discípulos(K), Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro(L), dijo* a Jesús[d]: 9 Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados(M); pero ¿qué es esto para tantos? 10 Jesús dijo: Haced que la gente se recueste. Y había mucha hierba(N) en aquel lugar. Así que los hombres se recostaron, en número de unos cinco mil(O). 11 Entonces Jesús tomó los panes, y habiendo dado gracias(P), los repartió a los que estaban recostados[e]; y lo mismo hizo con los pescados(Q), dándoles todo lo que querían. 12 Cuando se saciaron, dijo* a sus discípulos(R): Recoged los pedazos que sobran, para que no se pierda nada. 13 Los recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce cestas(S) con los pedazos de los cinco panes de cebada que sobraron a los que habían comido. 14 La gente entonces, al ver la señal[f] que Jesús había hecho, decía: Verdaderamente este es el Profeta(T) que había de venir[g] al mundo.
15 Por lo que Jesús, dándose cuenta de que iban a venir y llevárselo por la fuerza para hacerle rey(U), (V)se retiró otra vez al monte(W) Él solo.
Jesús anda sobre el mar
16 Al atardecer, sus discípulos(X) descendieron al mar, 17 y subiendo en una barca, se dirigían al otro lado del mar, hacia Capernaúm(Y). Ya había oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no había venido a ellos; 18 y el mar estaba agitado porque soplaba un fuerte viento. 19 Cuando habían remado unos veinticinco o treinta estadios[h], vieron* a Jesús caminando sobre el mar y acercándose a la barca; y se asustaron. 20 Pero Él les dijo*: Soy yo; no temáis(Z). 21 Entonces ellos querían recibirle en la barca, e inmediatamente la barca llegó a la tierra adonde iban.
Jesús, el pan de la vida
22 Al día siguiente, la multitud(AA) que había quedado al otro lado del mar se dio cuenta de[i] que allí no había[j] más que una barca, y que Jesús no había entrado en ella[k] con sus discípulos, sino que sus discípulos se habían ido solos(AB). 23 Vinieron otras barcas de Tiberias(AC) cerca del lugar donde habían comido el pan después de que el Señor(AD) había dado gracias(AE). 24 Por tanto, cuando la gente vio que Jesús no estaba allí, ni tampoco sus discípulos, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaúm(AF) buscando a Jesús. 25 Cuando le hallaron al otro lado del mar, le dijeron: Rabí[l](AG), ¿cuándo llegaste acá? 26 Jesús les respondió y dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: me buscáis(AH), no porque hayáis visto señales[m](AI), sino porque habéis comido de los panes y os habéis saciado. 27 Trabajad, no por el alimento que perece, sino por el alimento que permanece(AJ) para vida eterna(AK), el cual el Hijo del Hombre(AL) os dará, porque a este es a quien el Padre, Dios, ha marcado con su sello(AM). 28 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Qué debemos hacer[n] para poner en práctica las obras de Dios? 29 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios: que creáis(AN) en el que Él ha enviado(AO). 30 Le dijeron entonces: ¿Qué, pues, haces tú como señal[o](AP) para que veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué obra haces? 31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto(AQ), como está escrito: «Les dio a comer pan del cielo(AR)». 32 Entonces Jesús les dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: no es Moisés el que os ha dado el pan del cielo, sino que es mi Padre el que os da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan de Dios es el[p] que baja del cielo(AS), y da vida al mundo. 34 Entonces le dijeron: Señor, danos siempre este pan(AT). 35 Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de la vida(AU); el que viene a mí no tendrá hambre, y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed(AV). 36 Pero ya os dije que aunque me habéis visto(AW), no creéis. 37 Todo lo que el Padre me da(AX), vendrá a mí; y al que viene a mí, de ningún modo lo echaré fuera. 38 Porque he descendido del cielo(AY), no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió(AZ). 39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que de todo lo que Él me ha dado(BA) yo no pierda nada(BB), sino que lo resucite en el día final(BC). 40 Porque esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que todo aquel que ve al Hijo(BD) y cree en Él, tenga vida eterna(BE), y yo mismo lo resucitaré en el día final(BF).
Murmuración de los judíos
41 Por eso los judíos(BG) murmuraban de Él, porque había dicho: Yo soy el pan que descendió del cielo(BH). 42 Y decían: ¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José(BI), cuyo padre y madre nosotros conocemos(BJ)? ¿Cómo es que ahora dice: «Yo he descendido del cielo(BK)»? 43 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: No murmuréis entre vosotros. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí si no lo trae[q](BL) el Padre que me envió, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final(BM). 45 Escrito está en los profetas(BN): «Y todos serán enseñados por Dios(BO)». Todo el que ha oído y aprendido del Padre, viene a mí. 46 No es que alguien haya visto al Padre; sino aquel que viene[r] de Dios, este ha visto al Padre(BP). 47 En verdad, en verdad os digo: el que cree[s], tiene vida eterna(BQ). 48 Yo soy el pan de la vida(BR). 49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, y murieron(BS). 50 Este es el pan que desciende del cielo(BT), para que el que coma de él, no muera(BU). 51 Yo soy el pan vivo(BV) que descendió del cielo(BW); si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre(BX); y el pan que yo también daré por la vida del mundo(BY) es mi carne(BZ).
52 Los judíos(CA) entonces contendían entre sí(CB), diciendo: ¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne? 53 Entonces Jesús les dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: si no coméis la carne del Hijo del Hombre(CC) y bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final(CD). 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí y yo en él(CE). 57 Como el Padre que vive(CF) me envió(CG), y yo vivo por el Padre, asimismo el que me come, él también vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que descendió del cielo(CH); no como el que vuestros[t] padres comieron, y murieron(CI); el que come este pan vivirá para siempre(CJ). 59 Esto dijo Jesús en la sinagoga, cuando enseñaba(CK) en Capernaúm(CL).
Reacción de los discípulos
60 Por eso muchos de sus discípulos(CM), cuando oyeron esto, dijeron: Dura es esta declaración(CN); ¿quién puede escucharla? 61 Pero Jesús, sabiendo(CO) en su interior que sus discípulos murmuraban por esto, les dijo: ¿Esto os escandaliza[u](CP)? 62 ¿Pues qué si vierais al Hijo del Hombre(CQ) ascender adonde antes estaba(CR)? 63 El Espíritu es el que da vida(CS); la carne para nada aprovecha; las palabras que yo os he hablado son espíritu y son vida(CT). 64 Pero hay algunos de vosotros que no creéis(CU). Porque Jesús sabía(CV) desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién era el que le iba a traicionar[v](CW). 65 Y decía: Por eso os he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí si no se lo ha concedido(CX) el Padre(CY).
66 Como resultado de esto muchos de sus discípulos(CZ) se apartaron(DA) y ya no andaban con Él. 67 Entonces Jesús dijo a los doce(DB): ¿Acaso queréis vosotros iros también? 68 Simón Pedro(DC) le respondió: Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna(DD). 69 Y nosotros hemos creído y conocido que tú eres el Santo de Dios(DE). 70 Jesús les respondió: ¿No os escogí(DF) yo a vosotros, los doce(DG), y sin embargo uno de vosotros es un diablo(DH)? 71 Y Él se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote(DI), porque este, uno de los doce(DJ), le iba a entregar[w](DK).

6 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,
9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
48 I am that bread of life.
49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)

Jesus Walks on the Sea(L)
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (M)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
16 (N)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [c]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (O)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (P)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
The Bread from Heaven
22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [d]that one [e]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (Q)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (R)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (S)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (T)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, (U)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30 Therefore they said to Him, (V)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (W)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (X)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (Y)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 (Z)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, (AA)“I am the bread of life. Rejected by His Own

Many Disciples Turn Away
