바빌로니아에 대한 말씀
50 이것은 주께서 바빌로니아와 바빌로니아 사람을 두고 예언자 예레미야를 통하여 내리신 말씀이다.
2 “세계만방에 이 소식을 알리고 선포하여라.
깃발을 올려 그것을 전하여라.
아무것도 숨기지 말고 낱낱이 전하여라.
‘바빌로니아가 점령당할 것이다.
벨 신이 부끄러움을 당하고
마르둑 신이 겁에 질려 떨 것이다.
바빌로니아의 신상들이 부끄러움을 당하고
그 우상들이 무서워 떨 것이다.’
3 북녘의 한 나라가 바빌로니아를 쳐서 그 땅을 황무지로 만들리니
바빌로니아는 사람도 짐승도 모두 달아나버린
아무도 살지 않는 곳이 되리라.”
4 “그 날 그 시간이 오면
나 주가 말한다.
이스라엘 백성이 유다 백성과 함께
기쁨의 눈물을 흘리며 그들의 주 하나님을 찾아 나서리라.
5 그들은 시온으로 가는 길을 묻고
시온을 향하여 얼굴을 돌리리라.
그들이 돌아와 주님과 하나가 되는 영원한 계약을 맺으리니
그 계약은 영원히 잊히지 않으리라.”
6 “내 백성은 길 잃은 양들이 되었다.
그들을 이끄는 목자들이 그들을 곁길로 이끌어
산등성이를 헤매게 만들었기 때문이다.
그들은 산과 들을 떠도느라 저희가 쉴 목장을 잊어버렸다.
7 그들을 보는 자마다 그들을 잡아먹었고
그들의 원수들마저 이렇게 말하였다.
‘그들이 주, 곧 자기들의 참 풀밭 되시며
조상의 희망이신 주께 죄를 지었으니
우리에게는 죄가 없다.’
8 너희는 바빌로니아에서 도망쳐 나와라.
바빌로니아 사람의 땅을 떠나서
양 떼 앞에서 걸어가는 숫염소처럼
앞장서서 나오너라.
9 나 주가 북녘 땅의 큰 나라들을 부추겨서
그들이 힘을 합하여 바빌로니아를 치게 하리라.
그들이 바빌로니아에 맞서 진을 치리니
바빌로니아는 북쪽에서 침공을 당하리라.
그들의 화살은 결코 빈 손으로 돌아오지 않는
노련한 용사들과 같으리라.
10 그러므로 바빌로니아 사람들이 약탈을 당하리니
그들을 약탈하는 사람들은 싫도록 그들을 약탈하리라.”
나 주의 말이다.
11 나의 소유, 나의 백성을 약탈한 너 바빌로니아야
너희는 그저 즐겁고 기쁘기만 하구나.
너희는 초원의 암송아지처럼 까불며 날뛰고
수말처럼 힝힝거리는구나.
12 그 때문에 너희 어미 바빌론이 엄청난 부끄러움을 당하리라.
너를 나은 여인이 수치를 당하리라.
이제 바빌로니아는 뭇 나라 가운데서 가장 보잘것없는 나라가 되고
황무지, 메마른 땅, 사막으로 남으리라.
13 주의 분노가 바빌로니아를 사람이 살지 않는 땅
완전히 버려진 땅으로 만들리라.
바빌론을 지나가는 사람마다 그 상처를 보고
눈이 휘둥그레지며 비웃음을 날리리라.
14 활을 쏘는 모든 병사들아
바빌로니아를 에워싸고 자리를 잡아라.
자 이제 쏘아라.
화살을 아끼지 말고 얼마든지 쏘아라.
바빌로니아가 주께 죄를 지었느니라.
15 바빌로니아를 에워싸고 사방에서 함성을 질러라.
바빌로니아가 항복한다.
그의 망루가 무너지고
성벽이 허물어진다.
이것이 주의 복수이니
너희는 바빌로니아에게 복수하여라.
바빌로니아가 남들에게 했던 그대로 갚아주어라.
16 너희는 바빌로니아에서 씨 뿌리는 사람을 없애버리고
추수 때에 낫을 들고 거두어들이는 사람도 없애버려라.
바빌로니아에서 살고 있는 외국인들아
너희는 무서운 칼날을 피하여
각기 제 겨레 제 고향으로 돌아가거라.
17 “이스라엘은 사자들에게 쫓겨서 흩어진 양 떼이다.
이스라엘을 가장 먼저 잡아먹은 것은 앗시리아의 왕이었고,
맨 나중으로 이스라엘의 뼈를 먹은 것은 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살이었다.”
18 그러므로 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 이렇게 말한다.
“내가 앗시리아 왕을 벌주었던 것과 똑같이
바빌로니아 왕과 그의 땅을 벌주리라.
19 내가 이스라엘을 그의 목장으로 모아들이리니
이스라엘은 갈멜과 바산에서 풀을 뜯고
에브라임의 산악 지방과 길르앗에서 배를 채우리라.
20 나 주가 말한다.
그 날이 오고 그 때가 되면
내가 살아남게 한 사람들을 용서할 터이니
이스라엘의 허물을 아무리 찾아도 찾지 못하고
유다의 죄를 아무리 찾아도 찾지 못하리라.
그리고 내가 말하리라.
21 나 주가 말한다.
너희는 므라다임 땅으로 쳐 올라가라.
브곳에 사는 자들을 쳐죽여라.
그들을 뒤쫓아 죽이고 깡그리 없애버려라.
내가 너희에게 명한 모든 것을 그대로 다 하여라.
22 그 땅에 전쟁 소리가 들리고
엄청난 파괴의 소리가 들린다.
23 온 땅을 쳐부수던 망치가
어쩌다가 이렇게 깨지고 부서졌단 말인가?
어쩌다가 바빌로니아가
뭇 나라들 가운데 이처럼 비참한 신세가 되었단 말인가?
24 바빌로니아야
내가 너를 잡으려고 덫을 놓았더니
네가 그것을 모르고 걸려들었구나.
네가 나에게 대항하였기 때문에 피하지 못하고 붙잡힌 것이다.
25 내가 나의 무기 창고를 열고 분노의 무기들을 꺼내 놓았다.
이제 나 만군의 하나님이
바빌로니아 사람의 땅에서 할 일이 있기 때문이다.
26 너희는 바빌로니아로 오너라.
멀리서라도 오너라.
그 나라의 곡식 창고들을 열어라.
벽을 헐고 집을 무너뜨려 쓰레기 더미로 만들어라.
온 나라를 깡그리 없애버려라.
아무 것도 남겨두지 말아라.
27 황소 같은 자들을 모조리 도살장으로 끌고 가서
하나도 남기지 말고 쳐죽여라.
그들에게 재앙이 내렸다.
그들의 날
그들이 벌 받을 날이 찾아 왔기 때문이다.
28 저 소리를 들어 보라.
바빌로니아에서 빠져나온 피난민들이
주 우리 하나님께서 복수하셨다고
당신의 성전을 부순 자들에게 복수하셨다고
시온에서 선포하고 있다.
29 너희는
활 쏘는 사람들
활시위를 당기는 사람은 모조리 불러 모아
바빌론 성을 향하여 활을 쏘게 하여라.
바빌론 성을 빈틈없이 에워싸서
단 한 사람도 달아나지 못하게 하여라.
그들이 한 짓대로 갚아 주어라.
그들이 한 짓을 빠짐없이 그대로 갚아 주어라.
그들이 이스라엘의 거룩하신 분
곧 주님께 반기를 들었기 때문이다.
30 그러므로 그 날에
바빌로니아의 모든 젊은이들이 거리에서 쓰러져 죽고
모든 군인이 죽어 잠잠하리라.
나 주의 말이다.
31 너 오만한 자야
내가 너를 친다.
너의 날
곧 네가 벌 받을 날이 왔기 때문이다.
나 만군의 주가 말한다.
32 오만한 자가 비틀거리다가 쓰러지나
그를 붙들어 주는 사람 하나 없으리라.
내가 바빌로니아의 성읍에 불을 놓으리니
그 불이 바빌로니아 가까이에 있는 사람들까지 모두 삼켜 버리리라.”
33 이것은 나 만군의 주가 하는 말이다.
“이스라엘 백성과 유다 백성이 다 함께 억압을 받고 있다.
그들을 포로로 잡아간 자들이
그들을 단단히 붙잡아 두고
돌려보내 주려 하지 않는다.
34 그러나 이스라엘의 구원자는 강하니
그 이름은 만군의 주이다.
내가 그들의 호소를 열심히 들어 주어
그들의 땅에는 안식을 주고
바빌로니아 땅에 사는 자들에게는 소용돌이를 일으키리라.”
35 나 주의 말이다.
“바빌로니아 사람들 위에 칼이 드리워졌다.
바빌로니아 사람들과
그 땅의 고관들과
지혜 있는 자들을 치는 칼이다.
36 그 땅의 거짓 예언자들 위에 칼이 드리워졌으니
그들은 어리석은 자들이 되리라.
그 땅의 용사들 위에 칼이 드리워졌으니
그들이 두려움에 떨리라.
37 그 땅의 말들과 전차[a]들과
병사들 가운데 섞여 있는 외국인 병사들 위에도 칼이 드리워졌으니
그들이 모두 여자처럼 되리라.
바빌로니아의 창고들 위에도 칼이 드리워졌으니
그 창고들이 약탈을 당하리라.
38 바빌로니아의 샘물들 위에 칼이 드리워졌으니
그 샘들이 말라 버리리라.
바빌로니아는 온갖 우상을 섬기는 나라이며
그 땅의 백성은 모두 우상에 미쳐버린 자들이기 때문이다.
39 머지않아 바빌론 성은
사막의 짐승들과 이리들이 살고
타조들이 사는 곳이 되리라.
그곳에 다시는 사람이 살지 않으리라.
오고 오는 세대 동안 아무도 그곳에 살지 않으리라.
40 하나님께서 소돔과 고모라와 그 둘레의 성읍들을 뒤엎으셨을 때처럼
그 땅에 자리 잡고 사는 사람도 없을 것이며
그 땅에 머무르는 자도 없으리라.”
주의 말이다.
41 보라.
북녘 땅에서 군대가 오고 있다.
큰 나라가 오고 있다.
수많은 왕들이 땅 끝에서 떨치고 일어나 오고 있다.
42 그들은 활과 창을 들고 있다.
그들은 잔인하고 인정사정 두지 않는 자들이다.
그들이 말을 타고 달려오며 내지르는 소리
마치 으르렁거리는 바다 소리 같구나.
딸 바빌로니아야
그들이 전열을 갖춘 전사들처럼 너를 치려고 밀어닥치고 있다.
43 바빌로니아 왕은 그 소식을 듣더니 두 팔에 힘이 빠졌다.
그는 걱정 근심에 사로잡혀 아기를 낳으려는 여인처럼 괴로워한다.
44 요단 강가의 숲에서 나온 사자가
풀밭에서 뛰어노는 양 떼를 덮치듯이
내가 바빌로니아를 눈 깜짝 할 사이에 덮쳐 그 땅에서 쫓아내리라.
그리고 그 땅에 내가 고른 지도자를 세우겠다.
나와 같은 자가 누구이며
나에게 도전할 수 있는 자가 누구이며
나에게 맞설 통치자가 누구이기에
감히 내 뜻을 막을 수 있겠느냐?
45 그러므로 너희는 들어보라.
나 주가 바빌로니아를 치려고 계획한 일을.
나 주가 바빌로니아 땅에 사는 자들을 치려고 세운 계획을.
“양 떼 가운데서 새끼 양들까지 끌려가리니
나 주가 그들의 목장을 완전한 폐허로 만들어버리겠다.
46 바빌로니아가 무너졌다는 소리에 땅이 흔들리고
그들이 울부짖는 소리가 뭇 나라 사이에 울려 퍼지리라.”

50 The word that the Lord spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.
2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
4 In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the Lord their God.
5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.
6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.
7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, even the Lord, the hope of their fathers.
8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.
9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.
10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the Lord.
11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;
12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
13 Because of the wrath of the Lord it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.
17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
18 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.
19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.
20 In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.
21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the Lord, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the Lord.
25 The Lord hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord God of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.
27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his temple.
29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord.
31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord God of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
33 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.
34 Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the Lord, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.
38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
