41 그 해 일곱째 달에 엘리사마의 손자이며 느다니야의 아들인 이스마엘이, 부하 열 사람을 데리고 미스바에 있는 아히감의 아들 그달리야를 찾아 왔다. 이스마엘은 왕족이며 왕의 대신이기도 하였다. 그들이 함께 식사를 하던 중에 2 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘과 부하 열 사람이 일어나, 사반의 손자이며 아히감의 아들인 그달리야를 칼로 쳐죽였다. 이렇게 그들은 바빌로니아 왕이 그 땅의 총독으로 세운 사람을 죽였다. 3 그리고 이스마엘은 미스바에 그달리야와 함께 있던 모든 유다 사람들도 죽이고, 그곳에 있던 바빌로니아 군인들도 죽였다.

4 그달리야가 죽임을 당한 다음 날, 아직 아무도 그 일을 아는 사람이 없을 때, 5 세겜과 실로와 사마리아에서 여든 명의 사람이 주의 성전에서 제물을 바치려고 왔다. 그들은 모두 수염을 깎고 옷을 찢고 몸에는 상처를 내고 있었으며,[a] 주께 바칠 곡식제물과 향료도 가지고 왔다. 6 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘은 그들을 맞으려고 미스바에서 나와 울면서 걸어가다가 그들을 만나자 이렇게 말하였다. “아히감의 아들 그달리야에게로 갑시다.” 7 그들이 성 안에 들어서자 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘과 그의 부하들이 그들을 죽여 물웅덩이 속에 던져 넣었다. 8 그런데 그들 가운데 열 사람은 이스마엘에게 이렇게 사정하였다. “저희를 살려주십시오. 저희는 밭에다가 밀과 보리와 올리브기름과 꿀을 감추어 두었습니다.” 그래서 이스마엘은 그들은 살려주고 다른 사람들과 함께 죽이지 않았다. 9 이스마엘이 그달리야와 다른 사람들을 죽여서 던져 넣은 물웅덩이는, 아사 왕이 이스라엘 왕 바아사의 공격을 막으려고 파 놓은 것이었다. 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘은 자기가 죽인 사람들로 그 곳을 가득 채웠다.

10 이스마엘은 미스바에 있던 나머지 사람들을 모두 붙잡았다. 그들은 왕의 딸들과 미스바에 남아 있던 백성들로, 근위대장 느부사라단이 아히감의 아들 그달리야를 총독으로 세워 다스리게 했던 사람들이었다. 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘은 이들을 포로로 잡아서 암몬 사람에게로 넘어가려고 길을 떠났다.

11 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 있던 장교들이 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘이 저지른 악한 짓에 관한 소문을 들었다. 12 그들은 부하들을 거느리고 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘을 치러 뒤쫓아갔다. 그들은 기브온에 있는 큰 못 가까이에서 그를 따라잡았다. 13 이스마엘에게 끌려가던 사람들이 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 온 장교들을 보고 모두 기뻐하였다. 14 이스마엘이 미스바에서 포로로 잡아 끌고 가던 모든 사람이 뒤돌아서 가레아의 아들 요하난에게로 넘어갔다. 15 그러나 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘은 부하 여덟 명과 함께 요하난에게서 달아나 암몬 사람에게로 도망쳤다.

16 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘이 아히감의 아들 그달리야를 죽인 다음, 미스바에 남아 있던 모든 백성을 사로잡아 끌고 가려 하였으나, 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 있던 장교들이, 이스마엘의 손에서 포로로 끌려가는 사람들을 구해 내었다. 요하난이 기브온에서 구해 낸 사람들 가운데에는 병사들과 여자들과 어린아이들과 내시들이 있었다.

이집트로 달아나다

17 그들은 이집트로 가려고 도망치다가 베들레헴 가까이에 있는 게롯김함에서 잠간 쉬었다. 18 바빌로니아 왕이 아히감의 아들 그달리야를 그 땅의 총독으로 세워 놓았는데, 느다니야의 아들 이스마엘이 그를 죽였기 때문에, 그들은 바빌로니아 사람들이 두려웠던 것이다.

Insurrection Against Gedaliah

41 Now it came to pass in the seventh month (A)that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal [a]family and of the officers of the king, came with ten men to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at (B)Mizpah. And there they ate bread together in Mizpah. 2 Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men who were with him, arose and (C)struck Gedaliah the son of (D)Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, and killed him whom the king of Babylon had made (E)governor over the land. 3 Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is, with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

4 And it happened, on the second day after he had killed Gedaliah, when as yet no one knew it, 5 that certain men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men (F)with their beards shaved and their clothes torn, having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to (G)the house of the Lord. 6 Now Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went along; and it happened as he met them that he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!” 7 So it was, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah (H)killed them and cast them into the midst of a [b]pit, he and the men who were with him. 8 But ten men were found among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have treasures of wheat, barley, oil, and honey in the field.” So he desisted and did not kill them among their brethren. 9 Now the [c]pit into which Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain, because of Gedaliah, was (I)the same one Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain. 10 Then Ishmael carried away captive all the (J)rest of the people who were in Mizpah, (K)the king’s daughters and all the people who remained in Mizpah, (L)whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive and departed to go over to (M)the Ammonites.

11 But when (N)Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12 they took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah; and they found him by (O)the great pool that is in Gibeon. 13 So it was, when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, that they were glad. 14 Then all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the Ammonites.

16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, took from Mizpah all the (P)rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah after he had murdered Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—the mighty men of war and the women and the children and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon. 17 And they departed and dwelt in the habitation of (Q)Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, as they went on their way to (R)Egypt, 18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had murdered Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, (S)whom the king of Babylon had made governor in the land.

41 In the seventh month Ishmael(A) son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, 2 Ishmael(B) son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword,(C) killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed(D) as governor over the land.(E) 3 Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian[a] soldiers who were there.

4 The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards,(F) torn their clothes(G) and cut(H) themselves came from Shechem,(I) Shiloh(J) and Samaria,(K) bringing grain offerings and incense(L) with them to the house of the Lord.(M) 6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(N) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(O) 7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(P) 8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(Q) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa(R) had made as part of his defense(S) against Baasha(T) king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.

10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people(U) who were in Mizpah—the king’s daughters(V) along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.(W)

11 When Johanan(X) son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12 they took all their men and went to fight(Y) Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool(Z) in Gibeon. 13 When all the people(AA) Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah(AB) turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped(AC) from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.

Flight to Egypt

16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(AD) who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived,(AE) whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham(AF) near Bethlehem(AG) on their way to Egypt(AH) 18 to escape the Babylonians.[b] They were afraid(AI) of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah(AJ) son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

1 In the seventh month, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of royal descent, one of the king’s nobles, came with ten men to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, at Mizpah.(A) While they were together at table in Mizpah, 2 Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, and the ten with him, stood up and struck down Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with swords. They killed him, since the king of Babylon had set him over the land; 3 Ishmael also killed all the Judahites of military age who were with Gedaliah and the Chaldean soldiers stationed there.

4 The day after the murder of Gedaliah, before anyone learned about it, 5 eighty men, in ragged clothes, with beards shaved off and gashes on their bodies, came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense for the house of the Lord. 6 Weeping as he went, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, set out from Mizpah to meet them. “Come to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam,” he said as he met them. 7 Once they were inside the city, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, and his men slaughtered them and threw them into the cistern. 8 Ten of them said to Ishmael: “Do not kill us! We have stores of wheat and barley, oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he spared them and did not kill them as he had killed their companions. 9 The cistern into which Ishmael threw all the bodies of the men he had killed was the large one King Asa made to defend himself against Baasha, king of Israel; Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, filled this cistern with the slain.(B)

10 Ishmael led away the rest of the people left in Mizpah, including the princesses,[a] whom Nebuzaradan, captain of the bodyguard, had consigned to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam. With these captives, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

Flight to Egypt. 11 But when Johanan, son of Kareah, and the other army leaders with him heard about the crimes Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, had committed, 12 they took all their men and set out to attack Ishmael, son of Nethaniah. They overtook him at the great pool in Gibeon.[b] 13 At the sight of Johanan, son of Kareah, and the other army leaders, the people with Ishmael rejoiced; 14 all of those whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah went back to Johanan, son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, escaped from Johanan with eight men and fled to the Ammonites. 16 Then Johanan, son of Kareah, and all the military leaders took charge of all the rest of the people whom Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, had taken away from Mizpah after he killed Gedaliah, son of Ahikam—the soldiers, the women with children, and court officials, whom he brought back from Gibeon. 17 They set out and stopped at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, intending to go into Egypt. 18 They were afraid of the Chaldeans, because Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, had slain Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had set over the land.
