유다 왕 시드기야에게 내리는 경고
34 이것은 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살이 그의 군대와 그의 통치 아래에 있는 세상의 모든 나라들과 모든 백성을 이끌고, 예루살렘과 그 둘레의 모든 성읍들을 공격하고 있을 때에, 주께서 예레미야에게 내리신 말씀이다.
2 “나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 너는 유다 왕 시드기야에게 가서 이렇게 말해라. ‘나 주가 하는 말이다. 나는 이 성읍을 바빌로니아 왕의 손에 넘겨주어 그가 이 성읍을 불태우게 하겠다. 3 너도 그의 손아귀를 벗어나지 못할 것이다. 너는 꼼짝없이 붙잡혀서 그의 손에 넘겨질 것이다. 너는 바빌로니아 왕 앞에 끌려 나가 눈과 눈을 마주하고 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하고 말을 나누게 될 것이다. 그리고 바빌로니아로 끌려갈 것이다.
4 그러나 너 유다 왕 시드기야야, 나 주의 약속을 들어라. 내가 너에게 말한다. 너는 칼에 찔려 죽지는 않을 것이다. 5 너는 평안히 죽을 것이다. 사람들이 네 조상, 곧 네 앞의 왕들을 기리며 향불을 피웠듯이, 너를 기려 향불을 피우며 “아 임금님, 슬픕니다.” 하면서 너를 위해 슬피 울 것이다. 이것은 내가 친히 하는 약속이다. 나 주가 말한다.’”
6 예언자 예레미야가 예루살렘에서 유다 왕 시드기야에게 이 모든 말씀을 전하였다. 7 그 때에 바빌로니아 왕의 군대는 예루살렘과 유다의 성읍들 가운데 아직도 남아서 버티고 있는 라기스와 아세가를 공격하고 있었다. 요새화 된 유다의 성읍들 가운데서 남아 있는 것은 그 둘 뿐이었다.
백성이 언약을 어기다
8 시드기야 왕이 종들에게 자유를 줄 것을 선포하기로 예루살렘에 있는 모든 백성과 계약을 맺은 뒤에, 주께서 예레미야에게 내리신 말씀이다. 9 그 계약은 모든 사람이 자기가 부리는 히브리인 남종과 여종을 자유롭게 풀어 준다는 것이었다. 어느 누구도 같은 히브리 사람을 종으로 매어 둘 수 없게 되었다. 10 이 계약을 맺은 모든 고관들과 백성들은, 자기들이 부리는 남녀종들을 풀어 주고 더는 그들을 매어두지 않기로 하였다. 11 그러나 얼마 뒤에[a] 그들은 마음을 바꾸어 자기들이 풀어 주었던 남녀종들을 다시 붙잡아다가 종으로 부렸다.
12 그 때에 주님의 말씀이 예레미야에게 내렸다. 13 “나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 나는 너희 조상들을 그들이 종살이하던 이집트 땅에서 이끌고 나올 때 그들과 계약을 맺으며 이렇게 말했다. 14 ‘너희는 너희에게 종으로 팔려온 히브리 사람을 칠 년째가 되는 해에는 반드시 풀어 주어야 한다. 그가 육 년 동안 너를 섬긴 뒤에는 그를 자유로이 풀어 주어야 한다.’ 그러나 너희 조상들은 내 말을 듣지 않았고 내 말에 귀 기울이지 않았다. 15 그런데 얼마 전에 너희가 비로소 마음을 돌이켜 각기 동족에게 자유를 선포하여 내가 보기에 바른 일을 하였다. 너희는 내 이름으로 불리는 성전에 들어와 내가 보는 앞에서 계약까지 맺으며 그렇게 하였다. 16 그러나 이제 너희는 다시 태도를 바꾸어 나의 이름을 더럽혔다. 너희는 각기 자기의 남종과 여종을 풀어 주어 그들이 가고 싶어 하는 곳으로 가게 하더니, 다시 그들을 잡아다가 너희의 종으로 부리고 있다.
17 그러므로 나 주가 말한다. 너희는 너희의 동족을 자유로이 풀어 주라는 내 말을 듣지 않았다. 그래서 이제 내가 너희를 자유로이 풀어놓아 너희가 칼과 질병과 굶주림에 쓰러지게 하겠다. 내가 세상의 모든 나라들이 너희를 보고 무서워 떨게 만들겠다. 18 너희는 나와 계약을 맺을 때, 송아지를 두 쪽으로 갈라놓고 그 사이로 지나감으로써[b] 그 계약을 반드시 지키겠다고 약속했었다. 그러나 너희가 나와 맺은 계약의 조건을 지키지 않았으니, 이제 내가 너희를 그 송아지처럼 갈라놓겠다. 19 유다와 예루살렘의 지도자들과 내시들과 제사장들과 이 땅의 모든 백성이 갈라놓은 송아지 사이로 지나갔었다. 20 이제 내가 그들을 그들의 목숨을 노리는 원수들의 손에 넘겨주겠다. 그들의 주검은 하늘의 새와 땅의 짐승들의 먹이가 될 것이다.
21 나는 유다 왕 시드기야와 그의 고관들을 그들의 목숨을 노리는 원수들의 손에 넘겨주고, 지금은 그들에게서 잠깐 떠나 있는 바빌로니아 왕의 군대의 손에 넘겨주겠다. 22 주님의 말씀이다. 내가 명령을 내려 그들을 다시 이 성읍으로 데려오겠다. 그들은 이 성읍과 싸워 성읍을 차지한 다음 불로 태워 버릴 것이다. 내가 유다의 성읍들을 황폐하게 만들어 아무도 살 수 없는 곳이 되게 하겠다.”

Warning to Zedekiah
34 While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples(A) in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem(B) and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah(C) king of Judah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.(D) 3 You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands.(E) You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.
4 “‘Yet hear the Lord’s promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the Lord says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;(F) 5 you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire(G) in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, “Alas,(H) master!” I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.’”
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out—Lachish(I) and Azekah.(J) These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.
Freedom for Slaves
8 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people(K) in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom(L) for the slaves. 9 Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.(M) 10 So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free. 11 But afterward they changed their minds(N) and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.
12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors(O) when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(P) I said, 14 ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’[a](Q) Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention(R) to me. 15 Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people.(S) You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.(T) 16 But now you have turned around(U) and profaned(V) my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you,(W) declares the Lord—‘freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague(X) and famine.(Y) I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.(Z) 18 Those who have violated my covenant(AA) and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.(AB) 19 The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials,(AC) the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf, 20 I will deliver(AD) into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them.(AE) Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.(AF)
21 “I will deliver Zedekiah(AG) king of Judah and his officials(AH) into the hands of their enemies(AI) who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon,(AJ) which has withdrawn(AK) from you. 22 I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take(AL) it and burn(AM) it down. And I will lay waste(AN) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

34 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, (A)when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army, (B)all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem and all its cities, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Go and (C)speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, (D)I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 3 And (E)you shall not escape from his hand, but shall surely be taken and delivered into his hand; your eyes shall see the eyes of the king of Babylon, he shall speak with you (F)face[a] to face, and you shall go to Babylon.’ ” ’ 4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. 5 You shall die in peace; as in (G)the ceremonies of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, (H)so they shall burn incense for you and (I)lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!” For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.’ ”
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, 7 when the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and Azekah; for only (J)these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.
Treacherous Treatment of Slaves
8 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem to proclaim (K)liberty to them: 9 (L)that every man should set free his male and female slave—a Hebrew man or woman—(M)that no one should keep a Jewish brother in bondage. 10 Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go. 11 But afterward they changed their minds and made the male and female slaves return, whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male and female slaves.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 13 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I made a (N)covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, 14 “At the end of (O)seven years let every man set free his Hebrew brother, who [b]has been sold to him; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear. 15 Then you [c]recently turned and did what was right in My sight—every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor; and you (P)made a covenant before Me (Q)in the house which is called by My name. 16 Then you turned around and (R)profaned My name, and every one of you brought back his male and female slaves, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, and brought them back into subjection, to be your male and female slaves.’
17 “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. (S)Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord—(T)‘to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to (U)trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before Me, when (V)they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it— 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the [d]eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf— 20 I will (W)give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. Their (X)dead bodies shall be for meat for the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the earth. 21 And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army (Y)which has gone back from you. 22 (Z)Behold, I will command,’ says the Lord, ‘and cause them to return to this city. 3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:
5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the Lord.

8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.
10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
13 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,
14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:
16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf;
20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
22 Behold, I will command, saith the Lord, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.
