솔로몬이 지혜를 구하다
(대하 1:1-13)
3 솔로몬은 이집트 왕 파라오와 평화조약을 맺고 그의 딸과 결혼하였다. 그는 그의 왕궁과 주의 성전과 예루살렘 성벽 건축을 다 마칠 때까지 그 아내를 다윗 성에 머물게 하였다. 2 주님의 이름을 기릴 성전이 아직 지어지지 않았기 때문에 백성들은 산당에 있는 제단에서 희생제물을 드렸다. 3 솔로몬은 아버지 다윗이 일러준 모든 규정을 지켜 주님에 대한 그의 사랑을 보여 드렸다. 그러나 그가 지키지 않은 것이 있었으니, 곧 산당에서 제사를 드리고 향을 태운 일이었다.
4 왕은 제물을 바치기 위해 기브아으로 갔다. 그곳에 있는 산당이 가장 중요한 산당이었기 때문이다. 솔로몬은 그곳에 있는 제단 위에서 천 마리의 짐승을 번제물로 바쳤다. 5 그날 밤 기브아에서 주님이 솔로몬의 꿈에 나타나셨다. 하나님께서 말씀하셨다. “내게 구하고 싶은 것이 있으면 무엇이든지 말해 보라.”
6 솔로몬이 대답하였다. “주께서는 주의 종이요 저의 아버지인 다윗에게 큰 은혜를 베푸셨습니다. 그분이 주께 신실하고 그 마음이 의롭고 정직하였기 때문입니다. 주께서 그 분에게 이렇게 큰 은혜를 베푸셔서 오늘 그분의 아들이 그분의 뒤를 이어 왕의 자리에 앉게 하셨습니다. 7 오, 주 나의 하나님, 주께서는 아직 어린 아이인 저를 아버지 다윗의 뒤를 이어 왕이 되게 하셨습니다. 그런데 저는 어떻게 나가고 어떻게 들어와야 하는지도 모릅니다. 8 주의 종은 주께서 택하신 백성 가운데 살고 있습니다. 그런데 이 백성은 그 수가 너무 많아 다 셀 수 없을 정도입니다. 9 그러므로 주의 종에게 지혜를 주시어 주의 백성을 다스리고 옳고 그름을 분별할 수 있게 해 주십시오. 감히 누가 주님의 이 많은 백성을 다스릴 수 있겠습니까?”
10 주께서는 솔로몬이 이런 것을 구하는 것을 보고 기뻐하셨다. 11 그리하여 하나님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 네 자신을 위하여 오래 사는 것이나, 많은 재산이나, 원수 갚는 것을 구하지 않았다. 그 대신 너는 정의롭게 다스리기 위해서 옳고 그름을 판가름할 수 있는 지혜를 구하였다. 12 그러므로 나는 네가 구한 대로 너에게 지혜와 총명을 주겠다. 그리하여 너와 같이 지혜로운 사람이 전에도 없었고 앞으로도 없게 할 것이다. 13 또한 네가 구하지 않은 많은 재산과 명예도 주어서, 네가 살아 있는 동안 이 세상의 왕들 가운데 너와 같은 왕이 없게 할 것이다. 14 너는 네 아버지 다윗이 한 것과 같이 나의 길을 걸으며 내 법과 명령에 순종하여라. 그러면 네가 오랫동안 살게 해 주겠다.”
15 솔로몬은 잠이 깨어 그것이 꿈이었다는 것을 깨달았다. 그는 예루살렘으로 돌아가서 주의 계약궤 앞에 서서 번제물과 친교제물을 드렸다. 그런 다음 모든 신하에게 잔치를 베풀어 주었다.
16 하루는 창녀[a] 두 사람이 왕에게 와서 그 앞에 섰다. 17 그 가운데 한 여자가 말하였다. “임금님, 이 여자와 저는 같은 집에 살고 있습니다. 제가 아이를 낳을 때에 저 여자도 집에 저와 함께 있었습니다. 18 제가 아이를 낳은 지 사흘 만에 저 여자도 아이를 낳았습니다. 그 집에는 우리 두 사람 말고는 아무도 없었습니다. 19 그런데 어느 날 밤에 이 여자가 잠결에 자기 아들을 깔아뭉개어 죽이고 말았습니다. 20 그런 후 이 여자가 밤중에 일어나서 제가 깊이 잠든 사이에 제 옆에 있던 제 아들을 가져갔습니다. 그러고는 저의 아들은 자기 품에 두고 죽은 자기 아들은 내 품에 갖다 놓았습니다. 21 다음날 아침 아이에게 젖을 먹이려고 일어나 보니 아이가 죽어 있었습니다. 그래서 밝은 아침에 자세히 들여다보니 그 아이는 제가 낳은 아이가 아니었습니다.”
22 그러자 다른 여자가 말하였다. “아니야, 살아 있는 아이가 내 아들이고 죽은 아이가 네 아이야.”
그러자 첫 번째 여자도 “아니야, 죽은 아이가 네 아이이고 살아 있는 아이가 내 아이야.” 라고 주장하였다. 이렇게 두 여자는 왕 앞에서 다투었다.
23 그때 솔로몬 왕이 말하였다. “이 여자는 ‘살아 있는 아이가 내 아들이고 죽은 아이는 네 아들이다.’라고 하는데, 저 여자도 ‘아니야, 죽은 아이가 네 아들이고 살아 있는 아이는 내 아들이다.’라고 하는구나.”
24 그리하여 솔로몬 왕이 말하였다. “칼을 가져오너라.” 신하들이 왕에게 칼을 가져오니 25 왕이 명령하였다. “살아 있는 아이를 둘로 나누어서 반쪽은 이 여자에게 주고 나머지 반쪽은 저 여자에게 주어라.”
26 그러자 산 아이의 어머니는 제 아들을 생각하여 가슴이 메어지는 듯 하여 왕에게 아뢰었다. “임금님, 살아 있는 아이를 저 여자에게 주십시오. 제발 아이를 죽이지 마십시오.”
그러나 다른 여자는 이렇게 말하였다. “어차피 내 아이도 안 되고 네 아이도 안 될 판이다. 그러니 둘로 나누어 주십시오.”
27 그러자 솔로몬 왕이 판결을 내렸다. “살아 있는 아이를 죽이지 말고 첫 번째 여자에게 주어라. 저 여자가 그 아이의 어머니이다.”
28 온 이스라엘이 솔로몬 왕이 내린 판결을 듣고 왕을 존경하며 두려워하였다. 그가 하나님께서 주시는 지혜로 공정한 판결을 내린다는 것을 깨달았기 때문이다.

3 Now (B)Solomon made [a]a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh’s daughter; then he brought her (C)to the City of David until he had finished building his (D)own house, and (E)the house of the Lord, and (F)the wall all around Jerusalem. 2 (G)Meanwhile the people sacrificed at the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days. 3 And Solomon (H)loved the Lord, (I)walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.
4 Now (J)the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, (K)for that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 (L)At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon (M)in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
6 (N)And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he (O)walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You (P)have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a (Q)little child; I do not know how (R)to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You (S)have chosen, a great people, (T)too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 (U)Therefore give to Your servant an [b]understanding heart (V)to judge Your people, that I may (W)discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have (X)not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 (Y)behold, I have done according to your words; (Z)see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also (AA)given you what you have not asked: both (AB)riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So (AC)if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, (AD)as your father David walked, then I will (AE)lengthen[c] your days.”
15 Then Solomon (AF)awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and (AG)made a feast for all his servants.
Solomon’s Wise Judgment
16 Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and (AH)stood before him. 17 And one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; [d]no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne.”
22 Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.”
And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.”
Thus they spoke before the king.
23 And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”
26 Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for (AI)she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!”
But the other said, “Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him.”
27 So the king answered and said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother.”
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the (AJ)wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

3 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16 Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
17 And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18 And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
19 And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
22 And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
23 Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24 And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
26 Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
