베냐민 가문에서 다윗을 따른 용사들
12 다윗이 아직도 기스의 아들 사울을 피해 숨어 다닐 때, 시글락에 있는 그를 찾아와 싸움을 도운 용사들은 다음과 같다. 2 그들은 활도 쏠 수 있고 좌우 양손으로 무릿매 돌도 던질 수 있는 사람들이었다. 그들은 사울과 같은 베냐민 가문 출신으로 그의 친족들이었다.
3 그들의 우두머리는 아히에셀이고 그 다음은 요아스이다. 이 두 사람은 기브아 사람 스마아의 아들이다. 그 밖에 아스마웻의 아들들인 여시엘과 벨렛, 아나돗 사람인 브라가와 예후, 4 서른 용사 가운데 하나이면서 그들의 우두머리이던 기브아 사람 이스마야, 예레미야, 야하시엘, 요하난, 그데라 사람 요사밧, 5 엘루새, 여리못, 브아랴, 스마랴, 하룹 사람 스바댜, 6 고라 사람들인 엘가나 잇시야 아사렐 요에셀 야소브암, 7 그돌 사람 여로함의 아들들인 요엘라와 스바댜이다.
갓 가문에서 다윗을 따른 사람들
8 갓 가문 가운데서 광야의 요새에 있는 다윗에게 넘어간 사람들이 있었다. 그들은 용감한 전사들이고 방패와 창을 잘 다루는 싸움에 익숙한 군인들이었다. 그들은 사자처럼 사납고 산 노루처럼 빨랐다.
9 그들의 우두머리는 에셀이고 둘째는 오바댜, 셋째는 엘리압, 10 넷째는 미스만나, 다섯째는 예레미야, 11 여섯째는 앗대, 일곱째는 엘리엘, 12 여덟째는 요하난, 아홉째는 엘사밧, 13 열째는 예레미야, 열한째는 막반내이다.
14 이들은 갓 자손의 군대 지휘관으로서 그 가운데 계급이 낮은 사람은 백 명을 거느렸고, 가장 높은 사람은 천 명을 거느렸다. 15 어느 해 첫째 달 요단 강물이 모든 강둑에 넘칠 때에 그들은 강을 건너가서 골짜기에 살던 모든 사람들을 쳐서 동쪽과 서쪽으로 쫓아 버렸다.
베냐민과 유다 가문에서 다윗을 따른 사람들
16 베냐민과 유다 가문에서도 요새에 있는 다윗에게 넘어간 사람들이 있었다. 17 다윗이 나가서 그들을 맞이하며 말하였다. “여러분이 진심으로 나를 도우러 왔다면 나도 여러분을 기쁘게 맞이하겠소. 그러나 내가 아무 것도 잘못한 일이 없는데도, 여러분이 배신하여 나를 적에게 넘겨준다면, 우리 조상의 하나님께서 여러분을 벌하시기 바랍니다.”
18 그때에 서른 용사의 우두머리이던 아미새가 하나님의 영에 사로잡혀 말하였다.
“다윗 장군님, 우리는 장군님의 부하입니다.
이새의 아드님, 우리는 장군님의 편입니다.
하나님께서 장군님을 도우시니
평화를 누리십시오.
장군님을 돕는 이들에게도
평화가 깃들기를 바랍니다.”
그리하여 다윗은 그들을 기꺼이 받아들여 그의 군대 지휘관으로 삼았다.
므낫세 가문에서 다윗을 따른 사람들
19 므낫세 가문에서도 다윗에게 넘어온 사람들이 있었다. 그때는 다윗이 사울을 치려고 나선 블레셋군을 따라 나섰을 때였다. 그러나 다윗은 블레셋군을 도울 수가 없었다. 블레셋 왕들이 의논 끝에 “다윗이 우리 목을 베어서 그의 왕 사울에게 투항할 것이다.”라며 다윗을 돌려보냈기 때문이다. 20 다윗이 시글락으로 돌아갈 때에 므낫세 가문에서 아드나, 요사밧, 여디아엘, 미가엘, 요사밧, 엘리후, 실르대가 다윗에게 투항하였다. 이들은 므낫세 가문의 천인대장[a]들이다. 21 그들은 모두 용사로서 다윗을 도와 약탈자의 무리와 싸워 물리치고 다윗 군대의 지휘관이 되었다.
22 날마다 다윗을 도우려는 사람들이 모여들어 하나님의 군대와 같은 큰 군대를 이루었다.
헤브론에서 다윗을 따른 사람들
23 다윗이 헤브론에 있을 때 군인으로서 무장을 하고 그를 찾아온 사람들의 수는 다음과 같다. 그들은 주께서 말씀하신 대로 사울의 왕국을 다윗에게 넘어가도록 공을 세운 사람들이다.
24 유다 자손 가운데서 방패와 창으로 무장한 군인 육천팔백 명이 왔다.
25 시므온 자손 가운데서 용감한 군인 칠천백 명이 왔다.
26 레위 자손 가운데서 사천육백 명이 왔다. 27 그 가운데 아론 집안의 지도자 여호야다가 거느린 사람이 삼천칠백 명이고, 28 젊은 용사 사독과 그의 집안의 지휘관이 스물두 명이었다.
29 사울의 친족인 베냐민 자손 가운데서 삼천 명이 왔다. 그들 가운데 대부분은 그때까지 사울 집안에 충성을 바쳐온 사람들이었다.
30 에브라임 자손 가운데서 이만 팔백 명이 왔다. 그들은 자기 집안에서 유명한 용사들이었다.
31 므낫세 반쪽 가문에서 만 팔천 명이 왔다. 그들은 다윗에게 가서 그를 왕으로 추대하라고 지명을 받은 사람들이었다.
32 잇사갈 자손 가운데서 우두머리 이백 명이 그들의 친족을 이끌고 왔다. 그들은 때를 분별할 줄 알고 이스라엘이 하여야 할 바를 아는 사람들이었다.
33 스불론 자손 가운데서 갖가지 무기로 무장하여 전투 채비를 갖추고, 오로지 다윗에게 충성하겠다는 마음으로 모여든 군인 오만 명이 왔다.
34 납달리에서는 지휘관 천 명이 왔는데 그들과 함께 방패와 창을 들고 온 사람이 삼만 칠천 명이었다.
35 단 사람 가운데서는 전투 채비를 한 군인 이만 팔천육백 명이 왔다.
36 아셀에서는 전쟁 준비를 마친 군인 사만 명이 왔다.
37 요단 강 동쪽에 있는 르우벤 가문과 갓 가문과 므낫세 반쪽 가문에서는 갖가지 무기로 무장한 군인 십이만 명이 왔다.
38 전투 준비를 갖춘 이 모든 군인이 다윗을 온 이스라엘의 왕으로 세우려고 헤브론으로 모여들었다. 그리고 나머지 이스라엘 사람들도 오로지 한 마음으로 다윗을 왕으로 삼고자 하였다. 39 그들은 자기 친족들이 마련하여 준 음식을 먹고 마시며 다윗과 함께 그곳에서 사흘을 보냈다. 40 이들과 가까운 사람들이 멀리 잇사갈과 스불론과 납달리 땅에서까지, 나귀와 낙타와 노새와 소에 음식물을 싣고 찾아왔다. 그들은 밀가루와 무화과 빵과 건포도와 포도주와 기름과 소와 양을 많이 가져왔다. 온 이스라엘에 기쁨에 넘쳤다.

The Mighty Men Join David
12 (A)Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war. 2 They (B)were bowmen and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the (C)left hand; they were Benjaminites, (D)Saul's kinsmen. 3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, both sons of Shemaah of (E)Gibeah; also Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah, Jehu of (F)Anathoth, 4 Ishmaiah of (G)Gibeon, a mighty man among the thirty and a leader over the thirty; Jeremiah,[a] Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad of Gederah, 5 Eluzai,[b] Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the (H)Korahites; 7 And Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
8 From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were (I)swift as gazelles upon the mountains: 9 Ezer the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third, 10 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth, 11 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh, 12 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth, 13 Jeremiah tenth, Machbannai eleventh. 14 These Gadites were officers of the army; the least was a (J)match for a hundred men and the greatest for a thousand. 15 These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was (K)overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 And some of the men of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in friendship to help me, my heart will be joined to you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong in my hands, then may the God of our fathers see and rebuke you.” 18 Then (L)the Spirit clothed (M)Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said,
“We are yours, O David,
and with you, O son of Jesse!
(N)Peace, peace to you,
and peace to your helpers!
For your God helps you.”
Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
19 Some of the men of Manasseh deserted to David (O)when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, (P)“At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.”) 20 As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manasseh deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against (Q)the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army. 22 For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.
23 These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops (R)who came to David in Hebron (S)to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, (T)according to the word of the Lord. 24 The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were 6,800 armed troops. 25 Of the Simeonites, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100. 26 Of the Levites 4,600. 27 The prince Jehoiada, of the house of Aaron, and with him 3,700. 28 (U)Zadok, a young man mighty in valor, and twenty-two commanders from his own fathers' house. 29 Of the Benjaminites, (V)the kinsmen of Saul, 3,000, of whom the (W)majority had to that point kept their allegiance to the house of Saul. 30 Of the Ephraimites 20,800, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' houses. 31 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were (X)expressly named to come and make David king. 32 Of Issachar, men who (Y)had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command. 33 Of Zebulun 50,000 seasoned troops, (Z)equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David[c] with (AA)singleness of purpose. 34 Of Naphtali 1,000 commanders with whom were 37,000 men armed with shield and spear. 35 Of the Danites 28,600 men equipped for battle. 36 Of (AB)Asher 40,000 (AC)seasoned troops (AD)ready for battle. 37 Of the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh from beyond the Jordan, 120,000 men armed with all the weapons of war.
38 All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with (AE)a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a (AF)single mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. 40 And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, (AG)cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.
