아간의 죄
7 이스라엘 백성 가운데 전리품에 관한 여호와의 명령을 어기고 죄를 범한 자 가 있었다. 그는 유다 지파에 속한 세라의 증손이며 삽디의 손자이자 갈미의 아들인 아간이었다. 그가 전리품의 일부를 훔쳤으므로 여호와께서 이스라엘 백성에게 몹시 노하셨다.
2 [a]여리고성을 점령한 직후에, 여호수아는 여리고에서 몇 명의 정찰병을 보내 벧엘 동쪽, 벤 – 아웬 근처에 있는 아이성을 탐지해 오라고 지시하였다. 그래서 그들은 그 땅을 탐지하고
3 돌아와서 여호수아에게 이렇게 보고하였다. “아이성을 치기 위해 모든 군대가 다 올라갈 필요는 없습니다. 그 곳은 2∼3천 명 정도의 병력이면 충분히 칠 수 있는 조그마한 성이었습니다.”
4 그래서 3,000명 정도의 병력만 보냈으나 그들은 보기 좋게 패하여 아이군 앞에서 도망하였다.
5 아이군이 접전 끝에 36명 정도의 이스라엘군을 죽이고 도주하는 나머지 병력을 성문에서부터 스바림까지 추격하여 비탈길에서 쳤으므로 이스라엘군은 [b]전의를 상실한 채 기진 맥진하여 떨고 있었다.
6 그러자 여호수아는 이스라엘 백성의 지도자들과 함께 옷을 찢고 통곡하며 머리에 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고 해가 저물도록 여호와의 법궤 앞에 엎드려 있다가
7 여호와께 이렇게 부르짖었다. “주 여호와여, 정말 슬픈 일입니다. 어째서 이 백성을 인도하여 요단강을 건너게 하시고 아모리 사람의 손에 넘겨 멸망시키려고 하십니까? 차라리 우리가 요단강 건너편에서 살았더라면 좋을 뻔하였습니다.
8 여호와여, 이스라엘군이 적군에게 패하여 쫓겨왔는데 내가 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까?
9 가나안 사람들과 그 주변 민족들이 이 소식을 듣게 되면 그들이 우리를 포위하여 전멸시킬 것입니다. 주의 크신 이름을 위해 주께서는 어떻게 하시겠습니까?”
10 그때 여호와께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “일어나라! 어째서 이렇게 엎드려 있느냐?
11 이스라엘이 죄를 짓고 말았다! 그들이 내 명령에 불순종하여 만지지 말라고 지시한 물건을 훔치고서도 그 사실을 속이고 그것을 자기 소유물 가운데 숨겨 두었다.
12 이것이 바로 이스라엘군이 적군에게 패하여 등을 돌리고 달아나게 된 이유이다. 그 결과 너희도 역시 그 저주받은 물건과 같이 되었다. 너희가 가져서는 안 될 그 물건을 너희에게서 제거하지 않는 한 내가 다시는 너희와 함께하지 않을 것이다.
13 너는 일어나 백성들을 성결하게 하고 내일을 위해 준비하라고 지시하여라. 그리고 이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 이렇게 말한다고 그들에게 전하여라. ‘이스라엘아, 너희 가운데 가져서는 안 될 물건을 도둑질한 사람이 있다. 너희가 그 물건을 너희에게서 제거하기 전에는 너희가 적군을 당해 낼 수 없을 것이다.
14 내일 아침 너희는 지파별로 내 앞에 가까이 나오너라. 범인이 속해 있는 지파를 나 여호와가 지적하겠다. 나에게 지적당한 그 지파는 집안별로 가까이 나오너라. 나 여호와가 그 범죄한 집안을 지적하겠다. 나에게 지적당한 집안은 가족별로 나오너라. 그리고 지적당한 가족은 한 사람씩 나와야 한다.
15 너희는 가져서는 안 될 물건을 도둑질한 자로 뽑힌 그 사람과 가족을 화형시키고 그가 가진 모든 물건을 불태워 버려라. 그는 나 여호와와의 계약을 어기고 이스라엘 가운데 재난을 불러일으킨 장본인이다.’ ”
16 다음날 아침 일찍 여호수아는 이스라엘 백성을 각 지파별로 여호와 앞에 가까이 나오게 했는데 그 중에서 유다 지파가 뽑혔다.
17 그리고 유다 지파를 각 집안별로 나오게 했을 때 세라 집안이 뽑혔다. 그 다음에 여호수아가 세라 집안을 각 가족별로 나오게 하자 거기서 삽디의 가족이 뽑혔고
18 마지막으로 삽디의 가족 중에서 남자들을 한 사람씩 나오게 하자 삽디의 손자이며 갈미의 아들인 아간이 범인으로 뽑혔다.
19 그때 여호수아가 아간에게 말하였다. “너는 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께 사실을 말하고 죄를 고백하여라. 네가 한 일을 하나도 숨기지 말고 낱낱이 나에게 말하라.”
20 그러자 아간이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. “내가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께 범죄한 것이 사실입니다.
21 내가 [c]바빌로니아 제품의 예쁜 외투 한 벌과 [d]약 2.3킬로그램의 은과 [e]570그램의 금덩어리 하나를 보고 탐이 나서 가져왔습니다. 그 물건들은 지금 내 천막 안의 땅 속에 묻혀 있으며 은은 제일 밑에 있습니다.”
22 그래서 여호수아는 몇 사람을 시켜 그 물건들을 찾아오라고 지시하였다. 그들이 천막으로 달려가 보니 그 물건들은 아간이 말한 곳에 그대로 숨겨져 있었고 은은 제일 밑에 있었다.
23 그들은 그 물건을 여호수아와 백성들이 있는 곳으로 가져와 여호와 앞에 쏟아 놓았다.
24 그러자 여호수아와 모든 이스라엘 백성은 아간과 그의 아들딸들을 붙잡고 그 은과 외투와 금덩어리와 그의 모든 가축과 천막, 그리고 그가 소유한 모든 물건을 끌고 [f]아골 골짜기로 올라갔다.
25 여호수아가 아간에게 “네가 어째서 우리를 그처럼 괴롭혔느냐? 이제 여호와께서 너를 괴롭힐 것이다” 하자 이스라엘 백성이 아간과 그 가족과 그 모든 소유물을 돌로 치고 불살라 버렸다.
26 그런 다음 이스라엘 백성은 그 위에 큰 돌무더기를 쌓고 그 곳 이름을 ‘괴로움의 골짜기’ 라 불렀는데 오늘날까지도 그 이름이 그대로 남아 있다. 여호와께서는 그제서야 노여움을 거두셨다.

아간의 죄
7 그러나 이스라엘 백성은 주께서 모든 것을 완전히 쳐부수어 없애 버리라고 하신 주의 명령을 신실하게 지키지 않았다. 아간이라는 자가 하나님께 바쳐야 할 물건 몇 가지를 몰래 가졌다. 아간은 유다 가문 출신인 세라의 증손자이며 삽디의 손자이고 갈미의 아들이었다. 이 일 때문에 주께서 이스라엘 백성에게 몹시 노하셨다.
2 여호수아가 여리고에서 베델 동쪽 벳아웬 가까이에 있는 아이[a] 성으로 사람들을 보내면서 말하였다. “올라가서 그 지역을 잘 살펴보라.” 그리하여 여호수아의 명령을 받은 사람들이 올라가서 아이 성을 정탐하였다.
3 그들은 여호수아에게 돌아와 말하였다. “아이 성을 치려고 온 백성이 다 올라가지 않아도 되겠습니다. 이천 명이나 삼천 명만 보내어 그 성을 치도록 하십시오. 그 성에는 사람이 많지 않으니 온 백성을 힘들게 하지 마십시오.”
4 그리하여 삼천 명쯤의 군사가 올라갔다. 그러나 이스라엘 군사는 아이 성 사람 앞에서 형편없이 무너지면서 5 서른여섯 명이나 그들의 손에 죽임을 당하였다. 아이 성 사람들은 성문에서부터 채석장까지 추격하며, 비탈길에서 도망치는 이스라엘 군사들을 무찔렀다. 이렇게 되자 백성의 심장이 녹아내려 물처럼 되었다.
6 여호수아는 깊은 슬픔에 빠져, 옷을 찢고 하나님의 궤 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 저녁때까지 있었다. 이스라엘의 장로들도 그와 꼭 같이 하며 머리에 티끌을 뿌렸다[b].
7 여호수아가 아뢰었다. “주 하나님, 주께서는 우리가 요단 강을 건너 이곳으로 오게 해 주셨습니다. 그런데 어찌하여 이제 우리를 아모리 사람의 손에 넘겨 멸망시키려 하십니까? 우리가 차라리 요단 강 저편에서 사는 것으로 만족하며 살았더라면 좋을 뻔하였습니다. 8 오, 주님, 이스라엘이 적에게 이렇게 참패를 당한 마당에 제가 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까? 9 이제 가나안 사람과 이 지역에 사는 모든 민족이 이 일에 대한 소문을 듣게 될 것입니다. 그러면 그들은 우리를 에워싸고 우리의 이름을 땅에서 완전히 사라지게 만들 것입니다. 그러면 주님은 주의 크신 이름을 위하여 어떻게 하시렵니까?”
10 주께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “일어나라. 네가 어찌하여 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 있느냐? 11 이스라엘이 죄를 지었다. 그들은 나와 맺은 계약을 지키지 않았다. 나는 그들에게 그것을 꼭 지키라고 명하였다. 내가 그들에게 완전히 없애 버리라고 명한 몇 가지를 몰래 가졌다. 그들은 그것들을 훔치고, 거짓말을 하고, 그 물건들을 자신들의 물건 가운데 숨겨 놓았다. 12 그 때문에 이스라엘 백성은 적과 싸워 이길 수 없는 것이다. 그들은 이미 멸망당하도록 정죄를 받았기 때문에, 적 앞에서 등을 돌리고 도망치는 것이다. 너희는 내가 완전히 없애 버리라고 명한 것을 너희 가운데서 없애 버려라. 그렇게 하지 않으면 내가 더는 너희와 함께하지 않을 것이다.
13 너는 이제 가서 백성을 거룩하게 하여라. 그리고 이렇게 말하여라. ‘너희는 내일 있을 우리의 모임을 위해 자신들을 거룩하게 하여라. 주 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. 이스라엘아, 내가 완전히 없애 버리라고 너희에게 명한 물건들이 너희 가운데 숨겨져 있다. 너희가 그러한 물건들을 없애 버리기 전에는 결코 너희의 적을 당해낼 수 없을 것이다. 14 내일 아침 너희는 가문 별로 나오너라. 주께서 뽑으시는 가문은 갈래 별로 앞으로 나오너라. 또 주께서 뽑으신 갈래는 가족별로 나오고, 주께서 뽑으신 가족은 한 사람씩 나오너라. 15 완전히 없애 버렸어야 할 물건을 가지고 있는 것으로 드러나는 사람은 불에 태우겠다. 그리고 그에게 딸린 모든 것도 그와 함께 불태워 버리겠다. 그가 주와 맺은 계약을 어기고 이스라엘에서 아주 부끄러운 짓을 하였기 때문이다.’”
16 다음날 아침 일찍 여호수아는 모든 이스라엘 사람을 가문별로 나오게 하였다. 그렇게 하였더니 유다 가문이 뽑혔다. 17 유다 가문에 속한 갈래가 모두 나오니 세라 갈래가 뽑혔다. 세라 갈래에 속한 모든 가족이 나오니 삽디 가족이 뽑혔다. 18 여호수아가 삽디 가족에 속한 사람들을 한 사람씩 나오게 하니, 유다 가문에서 세라의 증손자이며 삽디의 손자이고 갈미의 아들인 아간이 뽑혔다.
19 여호수아가 아간에게 말하였다. “내 아들아, 너는 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 영광을 돌리고[c] 그분께 찬양을 돌려라[d]. 네가 한 짓을 하나도 숨기지 말고 내게 말하여라.”
20 아간이 대답하였다. “제가 진실로 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 죄를 지었습니다. 제가 저지른 일을 다 말씀드리겠습니다. 21 전리품 가운데는 시날[e]에서 만든 멋진 외투 한 벌과 이백 세겔[f] 나가는 은과 오십 세겔[g] 나가는 금덩이가 있었습니다. 저는 그것들을 보고 탐이 나서 가졌습니다. 그리고 제 천막 안 땅속에 감추어 두었는데 은을 맨 밑에 두었습니다.”
22 여호수아가 아간의 천막으로 사람들을 보냈다. 그들이 그리로 달려가 보니 물건들이 그 천막 안에 숨겨져 있는데 은이 맨 밑에 있었다. 23 그들은 숨겨졌던 물건들을 꺼내어 여호수아와 모든 이스라엘 백성 앞으로 가지고 와서 그것들을 하나님 앞에 펼쳐 놓았다.
24 여호수아는 온 이스라엘 백성과 함께 세라의 증손 아간을 끌고 아골 골짜기로 올라갔다. 그들은 그 은과 외투와 금덩이와 아간의 아들들과 딸들과 그의 소와 나귀와 양과 천막과 그가 가진 모든 것을 함께 끌고 올라갔다. 25 여호수아가 아간에게 말하였다. “어찌하여 너는 우리에게 이런 괴로움을 안겨 주었느냐? 주께서 오늘 너에게 괴로움을 주실 것이다.”
그러자 온 이스라엘이 아간과 그의 가족을 돌로 쳐서 죽인 다음 그 모두를 불살라 버렸다. 26 그들은 아간의 주검 위에 돌무더기를 쌓았다. 그 돌무더기가 아직까지도 그곳에 남아 있다. 이렇게 하고 나서야 주께서 맹렬한 노여움을 거두셨다. 이러한 사연 때문에 사람들은 그때부터 그곳을 아골[h] 골짜기라고 불렀다.

Defeat at Ai
7 But the children of Israel [a]committed a (A)trespass regarding the (B)accursed[b] things, for (C)Achan the son of Carmi, the son of [c]Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the country.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.” 4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, (D)but they fled before the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore (E)the[d] hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Then Joshua (F)tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they (G)put dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord [e]God, (H)why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its [f]back before its enemies? 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and (I)cut off our name from the earth. Then (J)what will You do for Your great name?”
The Sin of Achan
10 So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. (K)For they have even taken some of the [g]accursed things, and have both stolen and (L)deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. 12 (M)Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because (N)they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. 13 Get up, (O)sanctify[h] the people, and say, (P)‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.” 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which (Q)the Lord takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come man by man. 15 (R)Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has (S)transgressed[i] the covenant of the Lord, and because he (T)has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’ ”
16 So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17 He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18 Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, (U)was taken.
19 Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, (V)give glory to the Lord God of Israel, (W)and make confession to Him, and (X)tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed (Y)I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I [j]coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. 23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and (Z)all that he had, and they brought them to (AA)the Valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, (AB)“Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” (AC)So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
26 Then they (AD)raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So (AE)the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called (AF)the Valley of [k]Achor to this day.

El pecado de Acán
7 Pero un miembro de la tribu de Judá, que se llamaba Acán y era hijo de Carmí, nieto de Zabdí y bisnieto de Zérah, tomó varias cosas de las que estaban consagradas a la destrucción, con lo cual todos los israelitas resultaban culpables ante el Señor de haber tomado lo que él había ordenado destruir. Por eso la ira del Señor se encendió contra ellos.
El castigo del pecado: la derrota frente a Ai
2 Josué había mandado unos hombres desde Jericó, para que fueran hasta Ai, que estaba al oriente de Betel, cerca de Bet-avén, con órdenes de explorar la región. Ellos fueron y exploraron Ai, 3 y al volver le dijeron a Josué: «No hace falta que todo el pueblo ataque Ai, pues dos o tres mil hombres son suficientes para tomar la ciudad. No mandes a todo el pueblo, pues los que defienden la ciudad son pocos.»
4 Así pues, unos tres mil hombres subieron para atacar Ai. Pero los de Ai los derrotaron y los hicieron huir; 5 mataron como a treinta y seis israelitas, y a los demás los persiguieron desde las puertas de la ciudad hasta las canteras, y en la bajada los destrozaron. Por esta razón la gente se desanimó y perdió el valor.
6 Josué y los ancianos de Israel rasgaron sus ropas y se echaron polvo sobre la cabeza en señal de dolor; luego se inclinaron ante el arca del Señor tocando el suelo con la frente, hasta la caída de la tarde. 7 Y decía Josué:
—¡Ay, Señor! ¿Para qué hiciste que este pueblo pasara el río Jordán? ¿Acaso fue para entregarnos a los amorreos, y para que ellos nos destruyeran? ¡Ojalá nos hubiéramos quedado al otro lado del Jordán! 8 ¡Ay, Señor! ¿Qué puedo decir, ahora que los israelitas han huido de sus enemigos? 9 Los cananeos y todos los que viven en la región se van a enterar de lo que ha pasado, y nos atacarán juntos, y no quedará de nosotros ni el recuerdo. Entonces, ¿qué será de tu gran nombre?
10 Y el Señor le contestó:
—Levántate. ¿Qué haces ahí, en el suelo? 11 Los israelitas han pecado, y han roto la alianza que yo hice con ellos. Tomaron de las cosas que debieron ser destruidas; las robaron sabiendo que hacían mal, y las han escondido entre sus pertenencias. 12 Por eso los israelitas no podrán hacer frente a sus enemigos. Tendrán que huir de ellos, pues ahora los israelitas mismos merecen ser destruidos. Y si ustedes no destruyen pronto lo que ordené que se destruyera, no estaré más con ustedes. 13 Levántate y convoca al pueblo. Diles que se preparen para presentarse mañana delante de mí, porque yo, el Señor y Dios de Israel, digo así: “Tú, Israel, has tomado lo que debió ser destruido por completo, y mientras no lo destruyas y lo eches fuera de ti, no podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos.” 14 Mañana preséntense todos por tribus, y la tribu que yo señale presentará a cada uno de sus clanes; el clan que yo señale presentará a cada una de sus familias, y la familia que yo señale presentará a cada uno de sus hombres. 15 Y el que tenga en su poder lo que debió ser destruido, será quemado con su familia y con todas sus posesiones, por haber hecho una cosa indigna en Israel y no haber cumplido la alianza del Señor.
El castigo de Acán
16 Al día siguiente, Josué se levantó muy temprano y mandó que la gente se presentara repartida en tribus. Y el Señor señaló a la tribu de Judá. 17 Entonces Josué hizo que la tribu de Judá presentara a cada uno de sus clanes, y fue señalado el clan de Zérah. De entre los de Zérah fue señalada la familia de Zabdí. 18 Cuando los hombres de la familia de Zabdí se acercaron uno por uno, fue señalado Acán, el hijo de Carmí, que era nieto de Zabdí y bisnieto de Zérah, de la tribu de Judá.
19 Entonces Josué le dijo a Acán:
—Hijo mío, da honor y alabanza al Señor y Dios de Israel, diciéndome lo que has hecho. ¡No me lo ocultes!
20 Y Acán le contestó:
—En verdad, confieso que he pecado contra el Señor y Dios de Israel. Esto es lo que hice: 21 Entre las cosas que tomamos en Jericó, vi un bello manto de Babilonia, doscientas monedas de plata y una barra de oro que pesaba más de medio kilo. Me gustaron esas cosas, y me quedé con ellas, y las he enterrado debajo de mi tienda de campaña, poniendo el dinero en el fondo.
22 Josué mandó en seguida unos hombres a la tienda de Acán, los cuales encontraron todo lo que allí estaba escondido, con la plata en el fondo. 23 Lo tomaron y se lo llevaron a Josué y a los israelitas, los cuales se lo presentaron al Señor. 24 Luego se llevaron a Acán al valle de Acor junto con la plata, el manto, la barra de oro, sus hijos y sus hijas, sus bueyes, asnos y ovejas, y su tienda y todo lo que era suyo.
25 Josué le dijo:
—¿Por qué trajiste esta desgracia sobre nosotros? Ahora, que el Señor haga caer sobre ti la desgracia que nos trajiste.
Dicho esto, todos los israelitas mataron a pedradas a Acán y a los suyos, y luego los quemaron. 26 Después pusieron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que todavía sigue en pie. Por esta razón ese lugar se llama todavía valle de Acor. Así se calmó la ira del Señor contra Israel.
