6 여리고 성은 이스라엘 백성 때문에 굳게 닫혀 있었다. 성에서 나오는 사람도 없었고 성으로 들어가는 사람도 없었다.
2 그때에 주께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 여리고 성과 그 왕과 용사들을 네 손에 넘겨준다. 3 너는 모든 군인을 거느리고 그 성 둘레를 하루에 한 번씩 돌아라. 그렇게 엿새 동안 하여라. 4 제사장 일곱 명이 각기 숫양의 뿔로 만든 나팔을 들고 궤 앞에서 걷게 하여라. 그리고 이레째 되는 날에는 그 성 둘레를 일곱 번 도는데, 제사장들은 나팔을 불며 돌게 하여라. 5 제사장들이 나팔을 한 번 길게 부는 소리를 들으면, 모든 군사는 다 같이 힘껏 고함을 지르게 하여라. 그러면 성벽이 완전히 무너져 내릴 것이다. 그때에 모든 군사는 곧장 쳐들어가라.”
6 그리하여 눈의 아들 여호수아는 제사장들을 불러서 말하였다. “주의 계약궤를 메고 서라. 그리고 일곱 제사장은 숫양 뿔 나팔을 들고 주의 계약궤 앞에 서라.” 7 그러고 나서 그가 군인들에게 명령하였다. “앞으로 나아가거라. 성을 돌아라. 무장한 군인들은 주의 궤 앞에서 행군하여라.”
8 여호수아가 군인들에게 말을 마치자, 일곱 제사장은 각기 숫양 뿔 나팔을 들고 주의 궤를 앞서 가며 나팔을 불었다. 그리고 주의 궤는 그들의 뒤를 따랐다. 9 무장한 선발대는 나팔을 부는 제사장들보다 앞서 갔고, 후위부대는 궤를 뒤따랐다. 그러는 동안 나팔 소리는 계속하여 울려 퍼졌다. 10 여호수아가 군인들에게 명령하였다. “함성을 지르지 말아라. 너희의 목소리를 높이지 말아라. 내가 너희에게 소리치라고 명령하는 그날까지 한 마디의 말도 하지 말아라.” 11 이렇게 여호수아는 주의 궤가 성 둘레를 한 바퀴 돌게 하였다. 그런 다음 그들은 진으로 돌아와서 밤을 지냈다.
12 다음날 여호수아는 아침 일찍 일어났다. 그리고 제사장들은 다시 주의 궤를 메었다. 13 일곱 제사장은 숫양 뿔 나팔 일곱을 들고 주의 궤를 앞서 가며 계속하여 나팔을 불었다. 무장한 선발부대는 그들보다 앞서 나아갔고, 후위부대는 주의 궤를 뒤따랐다. 14 그들은 둘째 날에도 이렇게 성 둘레를 한 바퀴 돌고 진으로 돌아왔다. 그들은 엿새 동안 이렇게 하였다.
15 이레째 되는 날 그들은 동틀 무렵에 일어나 전과 똑같이 성 둘레를 돌았다. 그러나 이 날만은 일곱 바퀴를 돌았다. 16 일곱 바퀴째에 제사장들이 나팔을 불자 여호수아가 군인들에게 명령을 내렸다. “큰소리로 외쳐라. 주께서 너희에게 이 성을 주셨다. 17 이 성을 완전히 쳐부수어야 한다. 이 성과 그 안에 있는 모든 것은 주께 바친 것이다[a]. 그러나 창녀 라합과 그 집에 함께 있는 사람들은 살려 주어라. 우리가 보낸 정탐꾼들을 그가 숨겨 주었기 때문이다. 18 너희는 삼가, 무엇이든지 완전히 없애 버려야 할 것을 가지지 않도록 하여라. 만약 하나라도 가졌다가는, 이스라엘 진이 너희 때문에 완전히 없어지게 될 것이다. 곧 너희가 진 위에 재앙을 불러 내릴 것이다. 19 은과 금과 놋과 철로 만든 모든 물건은 주께 거룩한 것이니, 그것들은 모두 주의 금고에 넣어야 한다.”
20 제사장들이 나팔을 불었다. 그 나팔 소리에 온 군대와 백성이 다 같이 크게 소리치자 성벽이 무너져 내렸다. 그러자 온 군대와 백성이 곧장 성으로 달려가 그 성을 점령하였다. 21 그들은 칼로 성 안에 있는 모든 것을 완전히 멸하였다. 남자와 여자, 젊은이와 늙은이, 소와 양과 나귀를 모조리 멸하였다.
22 여호수아가 전에 그 땅을 살피러 왔던 정탐꾼 두 사람에게 말하였다. “너희는 그 창녀의 집으로 가라. 그리고 너희가 맹세한 대로 그 여자와 그 집에 함께 있는 사람들을 데리고 나오너라.”
23 그리하여 정탐을 왔던 두 남자가 들어가 라합과 라합의 아버지와 어머니와 형제들과 그 여자에게 속한 모든 사람을 데리고 나왔다. 그들은 그 여자의 가족 모두를 데리고 나와 이스라엘 진 바깥에 있는 안전한 장소에 머물게 하였다.
24 그런 다음 그들은 온 성과 그 안에 있는 모든 것을 태워버렸다. 그러나 금과 은과 놋과 철로 만든 물건은 모두 하나님의 집 금고에 들여 놓았다. 25 여호수아는 창녀 라합과 그의 가족과 그의 집안에 속한 모든 사람을 살려 주었다. 여호수아가 정탐꾼으로 여리고에 보낸 사람들을 그 여자가 숨겨 주었기 때문이다. 그리하여 라합의 자손이 지금까지도[b] 이스라엘 백성 가운데 살고 있다.
26 그때에 여호수아가 엄숙하게 경고하였다. “이 성 여리고를 다시 짓는 자는 주 앞에서 저주를 받을 것이다.
이 성의 기초를 놓는 자는
맏아들을 잃을 것이요
이 성의 문을 세우는 자는
막내아들을 잃을 것이다[c].”
27 하나님께서 여호수아와 함께하셨다. 그래서 여호수아의 이름이 온 땅에 널리 알려졌다.

Jericho Is Destroyed
6 Jericho was bolted and barred shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites. No one could enter or leave.
2 The Lord said to Joshua, “I am about to hand Jericho, its king, and its warriors over to you. 3 All the soldiers will march around the city once a day for six days. 4 Seven priests will carry rams’ horns ahead of the ark. But on the seventh day you must march around the city seven times while the priests blow their horns. 5 When you hear a long blast on the horn, all the troops must shout very loudly. The wall around the city will collapse. Then the troops must charge straight ahead into the city.”
6 Joshua, son of Nun, summoned the priests. He said to them, “Pick up the ark of the promise, and have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns ahead of the Lord’s ark.”
7 He told the troops, “March around the city. Let the armed men march ahead of the Lord’s ark.”
8 After Joshua had given orders to the troops, the seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns ahead of the Lord marched off as they blew their horns. The ark of the Lord’s promise followed them. 9 The armed men went ahead of the priests, who blew their horns. The rear guard followed the ark while the priests continued to blow their horns.
10 Joshua ordered the troops, “Don’t shout, make any noise, or let one word come out of your mouth until I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11 So the Lord’s ark went around the city once. Then they went back to the camp and stayed there for the night.
12 Joshua got up early in the morning. The priests carried the Lord’s ark. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns were ahead of it. The priests blew their horns as they went. The armed men were ahead of them, and the rear guard followed the Lord’s ark while the horns blew continually. 14 They went around the city once on the second day and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day they got up at dawn. They marched around the city seven times the same way they had done it before. That was the only day they marched around it seven times. 16 When they went around the seventh time, the priests blew their rams’ horns.
Joshua said to the troops, “Shout, because the Lord has given you the city! 17 The city has been claimed by the Lord. Everything in it belongs to the Lord. Only the prostitute Rahab and all who are in the house with her will live because she hid the messengers we sent. 18 But stay away from what has been claimed by the Lord for destruction, or you, too, will be destroyed by the Lord. If you take anything that is claimed by the Lord, you will bring destruction and disaster on the camp of Israel. 19 All the silver and gold and everything made of bronze and iron are holy and belong to the Lord. They must go into the Lord’s treasury.”
20 So the troops shouted very loudly when they heard the blast of the rams’ horns, and the wall collapsed. The troops charged straight ahead and captured the city. 21 They claimed everything in it for the Lord. With their swords they killed men and women, young and old, as well as cattle, sheep, and donkeys.
22 But Joshua said to the two spies, “Go to the prostitute’s house. Bring the woman out, along with everything she has, as you swore you would do for her.”
23 The spies went and brought out Rahab, her father, mother, brothers, everything she had, and even all of her relatives. They gave them a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then Israel burned the city and everything in it. But they put the silver and gold and everything made of bronze and iron into the Lord’s treasury. 25 Joshua spared the prostitute Rahab, her father’s family, and everything she had. She still lives in Israel today because she hid the messengers Joshua had sent to look at Jericho.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this curse:
“The Lord will curse
whoever comes to rebuild the city of Jericho.
It will cost him his firstborn son
to lay the foundation.
It will cost him his youngest son
to set up the city doors.”
27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

6 Now the gates of Jericho(A) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(B) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(C) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(D) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(E) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(F) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(G) 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance(H)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(I) of the Lord.”
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(J) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(K)” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(L) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(M) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a](N) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(O) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(P) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(Q) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(R) and bring trouble(S) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(T) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”
20 When the trumpets sounded,(U) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(V) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(W) 21 They devoted(X) the city to the Lord and destroyed(Y) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men(Z) who had spied out(AA) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(AB)” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(AC) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city(AD) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(AE) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(AF) 25 But Joshua spared(AG) Rahab the prostitute,(AH) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(AI)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(AJ) “Cursed(AK) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”(AL)
27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(AM) and his fame spread(AN) throughout the land.
