이스라엘의 반역
20 여호야긴 왕이 포로로 잡혀온 지 칠 년째 되는 해 오월 십일[a]에 이스라엘 장로 몇 사람이 와서 내 앞에 앉았다. 그들은 주의 뜻을 여쭈어 보려고 왔다.
2 그때에 주의 말씀이 내게 내렸다. 3 “사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 원로들에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘나 주 하나님이 말한다. 너희가 나의 뜻을 물으려고 왔느냐? 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세한다. 나는 아예 너희가 내게 묻는 것을 허락하지 않겠다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다.’
4 네가 그들을 심판하려느냐? 사람의 아들아, 네가 그들을 정말로 심판하려느냐? 그들을 심판하려거든, 너는 그들의 조상이 저지른 역겨운 짓들을 그들에게 낱낱이 일러주어라. 5 그리고 그들에게 말하여라. ‘나 주 하나님이 하는 말이다. 내가 이스라엘을 골라 뽑던 날, 나는 야곱 집안의 자손들에게 맹세하였다. 이집트 땅에서 그들에게 나를 알려 주었다. 나는 맹세하기를 “내가 주 너희의 하나님이다.”라고 선언하였다.’ 6 그리고 그 날 나는 그들에게 맹세하였다. 그들을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나와, 내가 그들을 위해서 찾아 놓은 땅으로 데려다 주겠다고 맹세하였다. 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅, 이 세상의 모든 땅들 가운데서 가장 아름다운 땅으로 데려다 주겠다고 맹세하였다. 7 그러면서 나는 그들에게 말하였다. ‘너희는 더러운 우상에게 흠뻑 빠져있다. 그것들을 내던지고 이집트의 우상으로 너희 자신을 더럽히지 말아라. 내가 주 너희의 하나님이다.’
8 그러나 그들은 나에게 반역하고 내 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 어느 누구도 자기들이 흠뻑 빠져있는 더러운 우상을 내던지지 않았고, 이집트의 우상을 버리지도 않았다. 그래서 나는 이집트 땅에서 그들에게 나의 진노를 쏟아 부어 화풀이를 하겠다고 말하였다. 9 그러나 나는 그렇게 하지 않았다. 그들이 섞여 살고 있는 뭇 민족 가운데서 내 이름을 더럽히고 싶지 않았던 것이다. 오히려 나는 뭇 민족이 지켜보는 가운데 그들을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나옴으로써, 이스라엘에게 내가 어떤 하나님인가를 알려 주었다. 10 나는 그들을 이집트에서 데리고 나와 광야로 데려갔다. 11 나는 그들에게 규례를 정하여 주고 법을 알려 주었다. 누구든지 그것들을 지키면 살 수 있는 것이었다. 12 또 나는 그들과 나 사이의 표징으로써 안식일도 정하여 주었다. 그것은 나 주가 그들을 거룩하게 하였다는 것을 그들이 알게 하려는 것이었다.
13 그러나 이스라엘 백성은 광야에서 나에게 반역하였다. 그들은 나의 규례를 따르지 않았고 나의 법을 거부하였다. 누구나 그대로 따르고 지키면 살 수 있는 나의 규례를 따르지 않았고 나의 법을 지키지 않았다. 그리고 나의 안식일을 완전히 더럽혀 놓았다. 그래서 나는 광야에서 그들에게 나의 진노를 쏟아 부어 그들을 멸망시키겠다고 말하였다. 14 그러나 그렇게 하지 않았다. 뭇 민족이 지켜보는 가운데 내가 그들을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나왔는데, 바로 그 민족들 앞에서 내 이름을 더럽히고 싶지 않았기 때문이었다. 15 또 나는 광야에서 그들에게 맹세하였다. 내가 그들에게 주기로 한 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅, 모든 땅들 가운데서 가장 아름다운 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어가지 않겠다고 맹세하였다. 16 그들이 나의 법을 거부하고, 나의 규례를 따르지 않았으며, 나의 안식일을 더럽혀 놓았기 때문이었다. 그들의 마음은 그들이 섬기는 우상들에게 홀려 있었던 것이다. 17 그러나 나는 그들을 불쌍히 여겨, 그들을 죽이지도 않았고 광야에서 그들을 아주 없애버리지도 않았다. 18 그 대신 나는 광야에서 그들의 자손에게 이렇게 말하였다. ‘너희 조상들이 따르던 규례도 따르지 말고, 그들의 법도 지키지 말고, 그들의 우상으로 너희 자신을 더럽히지도 말아라. 19 나는 주 너희의 하나님이다. 그러니 나의 규례를 따르고 나의 법을 조심스럽게 잘 지켜라. 20 그리고 나의 안식일을 거룩하게 지켜서 안식일이 너희와 나 사이의 표징이 되게 하여라. 그러면 너희는 내가 주 너희의 하나님인 줄 알게 될 것이다.’
21 그런데 그 자손도 나에게 반역하였다. 그들은 나의 규례를 따르지 않고 나의 법을 지키지 않았다. 누구든지 그대로 하면 살게 되어 있는데도 그들은 그렇게 하지 않았다. 그들은 나의 안식일도 더럽혀 놓았다. 그래서 나는 광야에서 그들에게 나의 진노를 쏟아 부어, 그들에게 분풀이를 하겠다고 말하였다. 22 그러나 나는 그들을 치려던 손을 거두어 들였다. 내가 뭇 민족들이 보는 앞에서 그들을 데리고 나왔는데, 바로 그 민족들 앞에서 나의 이름을 더럽히고 싶지 않았기 때문이었다. 23 그리고 나는 사막에서 손을 들어 그들에게 맹세하였다. 그들을 뭇 민족 가운데로 흩어 보내고, 여러 나라 속으로 뿔뿔이 흩어 버리겠다고 맹세하였다. 24 그들이 나의 법을 지키지 않고, 나의 규례를 따르지 않고, 나의 안식일을 더럽혀 놓았으며, 조상이 섬기던 우상에게 눈을 팔고 있었기 때문이었다. 25 그래서 나는 나쁜 규례와 생명을 줄 수 없는 법을 그들에게 주었다. 26 나는 그들이 맏아들을 제물로 바치도록 시킴으로 그들을 더럽게 만들었다. 내가 그렇게 한 것은, 그들을 겁주어 내가 주라는 것을 그들이 알게 하려는 것이었다.
27 그러므로 사람의 아들아, 이제 이스라엘 백성에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘나 주 하나님이 말한다. 너희 조상은 계속하여 나에게 반역함으로써 나를 모독하였다. 28 나는 그들에게 주겠다고 약속한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어갔다. 그러자 그들은 높은 언덕이나 푸른 나무만 보면 그곳에서 우상에게 희생 제물을 바쳤다. 나를 화나게 하는 제물을 바치고, 향을 피워 올리고, 부어 드리는 제물을 바쳤다. 29 그래서 나는 그들에게 물었다. “너희들이 다니는 그 높은 곳은 대체 무엇 하는 곳이냐?” 그런 곳을 오늘날까지 바마[b]라고 부른다.’
30 그러므로 너는 이스라엘 집안에게 말하여라. ‘나 주 하나님이 말한다. 너희는 너희 조상들이 했던 것과 똑같이, 너희 자신을 더럽히고 그들이 섬기던 역겨운 우상을 섬기며 음탕한 짓을 계속하려느냐? 31 너희가 맏아들을 불 가운데로 지나가게 하여 제물로 바치고 있다. 그렇게 하여 너희는 오늘날까지도 우상으로 너희 자신을 계속 더럽히고 있다. 오, 이스라엘 집안아, 그러면서도 너희가 내게 와 내 뜻을 묻는 것을 내가 허락할 성싶으냐? 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세한다. 나는 너희가 내게 와서 내 뜻을 묻는 것을 결코 허락하지 않겠다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다.
32 너희는 “우리도 세상의 다른 여러 나라의 민족들처럼 나무와 돌을 섬기자.” 하고 말한다. 그러나 결코 너희 생각대로는 되지 않을 것이다. 33 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세한다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다. 나는 너희를 힘센 손으로 치고 팔을 뻗어 너희를 다스리겠다. 나의 진노를 너희 위에 쏟아 붓겠다. 34 내가 너희를 뭇 민족 가운데서 데려 내오겠다. 내가 너희를 이들 가운데로 흩었지만, 거기에서 너희를 불러 모아 들이겠다. 그러나 나는 먼저 힘센 부너희를 치고 팔을 뻗어 너희를 벌하겠다. 나의 진노를 너희 위에 쏟아 붓겠다. 35 내가 너희를 옛날처럼 광야로 데리고 가겠다. 그러나 이번의 광야는 여러 민족들이 사는 곳이 될 것이다. 거기에서 나는 너희와 얼굴을 맞대고 잘잘못을 가려 너희를 심판할 것이다.[c] 36 내가 이집트 땅 광야에서 네 조상들을 심판하였듯이 너희를 심판하겠다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다. 37 나는 너희를 내 목자의 지팡이 밑으로 지나가게 하여 억지로라도 계약을 지키게 하겠다. 38 그리고 너희 가운데서 나에게 반역하고 반항하는 자들을 깨끗이 없애버리겠다. 내가 그들이 지금 살고 있는 땅에서 그들을 데려 나오기는 하겠지만, 그들이 다시 이스라엘 땅을 밟지는 못할 것이다. 그 때에야 비로소 너희는 내가 주라는 것을 알게 될 것이다.
39 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 너 이스라엘 집안아, 우상을 섬기고 싶으면 모두 가서 우상을 섬겨 보라.
그러나 끝내는 나의 말에 귀를 기울이지 않을 수 없게 될 것이다. 그리고 우상을 섬기며 온갖 제물을 바쳐서 나의 거룩한 이름을 더럽히지 않게 될 것이다. 40 나 주 하나님의 말이다. 나의 거룩한 산 이스라엘의 그 높은 곳에서 그 땅에 사는 온 이스라엘 집안이 나를 섬길 것이다. 거기에서, 내가 그들을 기쁘게 맞아들일 것이다. 그리고 거기에서, 내가 너희의 제물과 가장 좋은 예물을 온갖 거룩한 제물과 함께 바치라고 요구할 것이다. 41 내가 뭇 민족 가운데서 너희를 데리고 나오며 너희가 흩어져 살던 그 모든 나라에서 너희를 모아들일 때에, 나는 너희를 아름다운 향기로서 기쁘게 맞이하겠다. 그리고 뭇 민족이 지켜보는 가운데 나의 거룩함을 너희 가운데서 드러내겠다. 42 내가 이스라엘 땅, 곧 내가 너희 조상들에게 주겠다고 맹세한 그 땅으로 너희를 데리고 들어갈 때에 너희는 내가 주라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 43 거기에서, 너희는 자신들의 행실과 자신들을 더럽힌 여러 가지 행동을 기억하게 될 것이다. 그리고 자신들이 저지른 온갖 악한 짓을 돌이켜 보고 너희 자신에게 몸서리를 치게 될 것이다. 44 이스라엘 집안아, 내가 너희의 악한 길과 너희가 저지른 역겨운 짓들에 따라 그대로 너희에게 벌을 주어야 하겠지만, 내 이름을 위하여 그렇게 하지는 않겠다. 그러면 그 때에야 너희는 내가 주라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다.’”
45 주의 말씀이 내게 내렸다. 46 “사람의 아들아, 네 얼굴을 남쪽으로 돌려라. 남쪽을 꾸짖어 말하고 남쪽 네겝의 숲[d]을 꾸짖어 예언해라. 47 네겝의 숲에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘너는 주의 말을 들어라. 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 내가 네게 불을 지를 것이다. 그 불이 네 안에 있는 모든 푸른 나무와 마른 나무를 삼켜 버릴 것이다. 활활 타오르는 그 불길을 잡지 못하여 남쪽에서 북쪽에 이르기까지 모든 사람의 얼굴이 그 불에 그슬릴 것이다. 48 그러면 모든 사람이 나 주가 그 불을 질렀다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 그 불은 꺼지지 않을 것이다.’”
49 그 때에 내가 말씀드렸다. “주 하나님. 그들은 저를 가리켜서 ‘이 자는 비유만 떠들어대는 자가 아니냐?’라고 말합니다.”

20 우리가 포로로 잡혀온 지 7년째가 되는 해 5월 10일에 이스라엘 장로 몇 사람이 여호와께 물어 볼 말이 있어 내 앞에 와서 앉았다.
2 그때 여호와께서 말씀하셨다.
3 “사람의 아들아, 너는 이스라엘 장로들에게 나 주 여호와가 이렇게 말한다고 일러 주어라. ‘너희가 나에게 물으려고 왔느냐? 살아 있는 나 주 여호와가 분명히 말하지만 너희가 묻는 것을 내가 용납하지 않겠다.’
4 “사람의 아들아, 네가 그들을 심문하겠느냐? 그렇다면 너는 그 조상들이 행한 더러운 일을 그들에게 알게 하고
5 나 주 여호와가 이렇게 말한다고 일러 주어라: 내가 이스라엘을 택하고 이집트에서 야곱의 후손들에게 나를 나타낼 때에 내가 그들에게 맹세하며 ‘나는 여호와 너희 하나님이다’ 하였다.
6 그 날 나는 그들에게 이집트에서 그들을 이끌어내어 내가 그들을 위해 마련해 놓은 땅, 곧 기름지고 비옥하며 모든 땅 중에서 가장 아름다운 땅으로 인도하겠다고 약속하였으며
7 또 그들에게 ‘너희는 너희가 사랑하는 그 더러운 우상들을 던져 버리고 이집트의 거짓된 신들로 자신을 더럽히지 말아라. 나는 여호와 너희 하나님이다’ 하고 말하였다.
8 “그러나 그들은 나를 반역하고 내 말을 듣지 않았으며 그들이 사랑하던 더러운 우상들을 버리지 않고 이집트의 신들을 떠나지도 않았다. 그래서 나는 그들이 아직 이집트에 있을 때에 그들에게 내 분노를 쏟아 분풀이하겠다고 말하였다.
9 그러나 나는 이방 사람들이 보는 데서 내 이름을 더럽히지 않으려고 그렇게 하지 않고 그들을 이집트에서 인도해 내어 이집트 사람들이 보는 앞에서 나를 그들에게 나타내었다.
10 이렇게 해서 나는 그들을 이집트에서 인도해 내어 광야에 이르게 하고
11 순종하면 누구나 살 수 있는 법과 규정을 그들에게 주었다.
12 또 나는 그들에게 안식일을 주어 그들과 나 사이에 징표를 삼게 하고 내가 그들을 거룩하게 하는 여호와임을 알게 하였다.
13 “그러나 이스라엘 백성은 광야에서 나를 거역하여 순종만 하면 살 수 있는 내 법과 규정을 지키지 않고 거절하며 나의 안식일을 완전히 더럽혔다. 그래서 내가 광야에서 나의 분노를 그들에게 쏟아 그들을 멸망시키겠다고 말하였다.
14 그러나 내가 그들을 인도해 내는 것을 목격한 이방 나라 앞에서 나는 내 이름을 더럽히지 않으려고 그렇게 하지 않았다.
15 그리고 내가 그들에게 준 땅, 곧 기름지고 비옥하며 모든 땅 중에서 가장 아름다운 땅으로 그들을 인도하지 않겠다고 광야에서 맹세하며 말한 것은
16 그들이 내 명령을 거절하고 내 법을 지키지 않으며 안식일을 더럽히고 오히려 그 마음에 우상 섬기기를 더 좋아하였기 때문이다.
17 그렇지만 나는 그들을 불쌍히 여겨 광야에서 그들을 전멸시키지 않고
18 오히려 그 자손들에게 이렇게 말하였다. ‘너희는 너희 조상들의 규범을 따르지 말고 그들의 법을 지키지 말며 그들의 우상으로 자신을 더럽히지 말아라.
19 나는 여호와 너희 하나님이다. 너희는 내 법에 순종하고 내 명령을 지키며
20 나의 안식일을 거룩하게 하라. 이것이 너희와 나 사이에 맺은 계약의 표가 되어 내가 너희 하나님 여호와임을 상기시켜 줄 것이다.’
21 “그러나 그 자손들도 나를 거역하였으며 순종하면 살 수 있는데도 내 법을 어기고 내 명령을 지키지 않으며 나의 안식일을 더럽혔다. 그래서 나는 광야에서 내 분노를 그들에게 쏟아 분풀이 하겠다고 말하였다.
22 그렇지만 내가 그들을 인도해 내는 것을 목격한 이방 나라 앞에서 나는 내 이름을 더럽히지 않으려고 그렇게 하지 않았다.
23 나는 또 그들을 온 세계에 흩어 버리겠다고 광야에서 맹세하였다.
24 이것은 그들이 내 명령에 순종하지 않고 내 법을 무시하며 나의 안식일을 더럽히고 그 조상들의 우상을 사모하였기 때문이다.
25 내가 또 그들이 좋지 못한 법과 살지 못하게 하는 규정을 채택하게 하고
26 그들이 장남을 제물로 드려 자신을 더럽히도록 내버려 둔 것은 내가 그들을 벌하여 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알게 하기 위해서였다.
27 “그러므로 사람의 아들아, 너는 나 주 여호와가 하는 말을 이스라엘 백성에게 이렇게 전하라: 이와 같이 너희 조상들도 나를 배신하여 나를 욕되게 하였다.
28 내가 그들을 약속한 땅으로 인도했을 때 그들이 높은 산과 잎이 무성한 나무를 보고 거기서 제물을 드리고 분향하며 술을 따르고 제사를 지냄으로 나를 노하게 하였다.
29 그때 나는 그들에게 ‘너희가 찾아가는 산당이 무엇이냐?’ 하고 물었다. 그래서 그것은 오늘날까지 [a]‘바마’ 로 불려지고 있다.”
심판과 회복
30 “그러므로 너는 이스라엘 백성에게 나 주 여호와가 하는 말을 전하라. ‘너희가 너희 조상들처럼 자신을 더럽히고 더러운 우상을 쫓아다니며 창녀짓을 하느냐?
31 너희가 너희 아들을 불에 태워 제물로 바치고 오늘날까지도 너희 모든 우상으로 자신을 더럽히고 있다. 이스라엘 백성아, 너희가 나에게 묻는 것을 내가 어떻게 용납하겠느냐? 살아 있는 나 주 여호와가 말하지만 너희가 나에게 묻는 것을 내가 절대로 용납하지 않을 것이다.
32 “ ‘너희는 이방 나라 사람들처럼 되어서 나무나 돌을 숭배하고 싶다고 말한다. 그러나 너희 생각대로 되지 않을 것이다.
33 살아 있는 나 주 여호와가 분명히 말하지만 내가 큰 능력과 힘과 분노로 너희를 다스리겠다.
34 내가 큰 능력과 힘과 분노로 너희를 이방 나라에서 나오게 하며 너희를 흩어진 나라에서 모아
35 이방 나라의 광야로 인도하고 거기서 너희를 대면하여 심문하되
36 내가 너희 조상들을 이집트 땅에서 이끌어낸 후에 광야에서 그들을 심문한 것처럼 너희를 심문하겠다. 이것은 나 주 여호와의 말이다.
37 [b]내가 너희를 단단히 단속하여 나와 맺은 계약을 지키게 할 것이며
38 너희 가운데서 나에게 반역한 자와 범죄한 자를 내가 다 제거할 것이다. 그들이 살고 있는 땅에서 내가 그들을 나오게 할지라도 그들이 이스라엘 땅에는 들어가지 못하게 할 것이니 너희가 나를 여호와인 줄 알 것이다.
39 “ ‘나 주 여호와가 말한다. 이스라엘 백성들아, 너희가 끝까지 우상을 섬기겠다고 고집한다면 가서 너희 멋대로 하여라. 그러나 후에는 너희가 나에게 분명히 순종할 것이며 너희 예물과 우상으로 나의 거룩한 이름을 더 이상 더럽히지 않을 것이다.
40 나 주 여호와가 말한다. 그 땅의 거룩한 산, 곧 이스라엘의 높은 산에서 너희 모든 이스라엘 백성들이 나를 섬길 것이며 나는 너희를 기쁘게 받아들이고 또 거기서 너희 예물과 첫열매와 너희 거룩한 제물을 다 요구할 것이다.
41 내가 너희를 이방 나라에서 인도해 내고 너희를 흩어졌던 나라에서 모아들일 때에 내가 너희를 향기로운 제물로 받고 이방 나라들이 보는 데서 너희를 통해 나의 거룩함을 나타내겠다.
42 내가 너희 조상들에게 주기로 약속한 이스라엘 땅으로 너희를 인도해 들일 때에 너희가 나를 여호와인 줄 알 것이다.
43 거기서 너희는 너희 행위와 자신을 더럽힌 모든 소행을 기억하고 너희가 행한 악에 대하여 너희 자신을 증오하게 될 것이다.
44 이스라엘 백성들아, 내가 너희 악한 행위와 더러운 소행대로 너희를 벌하지 않고 내 이름을 위해 너희를 너그럽게 대하겠다. 그 때는 너희가 나를 여호와인 줄 알 것이다. 이것은 나 주 여호와의 말이다.’ ”
남쪽에 대한 예언
45 여호와께서 또 나에게 말씀하셨다.
46 “사람의 아들아, 너는 남쪽을 바라보아라. 너는 남쪽을 향해 외치며 네겝의 삼림 지대에 대하여 예언하라:
47 너는 여호와의 말씀을 들어라. 주 여호와께서 너에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. ‘내가 너에게 불을 놓을 것이다. 그 불이 너의 모든 푸른 나무와 마른 나무를 다 태워 버릴 것이다. 그 맹렬한 불꽃은 꺼지지 않을 것이며 남에서 북까지 온 지면이 그 불에 새까맣게 탈 것이다.
48 모든 사람이 나 여호와가 그 불을 일으킨 것을 알 것이니 그 불이 꺼지지 않을 것이다.’ ”
49 그때 내가 말하였다. “주 여호와여, 그들은 내가 [c]늘 알아듣지 못하는 비유만 말한다고 불평하고 있습니다.”

20 And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to enquire of the Lord, and sat before me.
2 Then came the word of the Lord unto me, saying,
3 Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you.
4 Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:
5 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the Lord your God;
6 In the day that I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
7 Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
8 But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
9 But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.
10 Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.
11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.
13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
14 But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
15 Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;
16 Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
17 Nevertheless mine eye spared them from destroying them, neither did I make an end of them in the wilderness.
18 But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:
19 I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.
21 Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.
22 Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
23 I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries;
24 Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.
25 Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;
26 And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the Lord.
27 Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.
28 For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.
29 Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name whereof is called Bamah unto this day.
30 Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations?
31 For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you.
32 And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.
33 As I live, saith the Lord God, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you:
34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord God.
37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
38 And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
39 As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord God; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
40 For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord God, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.
41 I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen.
42 And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.
43 And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.
44 And ye shall know that I am the Lord when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord God.
45 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
46 Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
48 And all flesh shall see that I the Lord have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.
49 Then said I, Ah Lord God! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?

International Standard Version
A Prophecy against Israel’s Elders
20 On the seventh year, on the tenth day[a] of the fifth month, men came from the elders of Israel to seek the Lord. They sat down in front of me.
2 “Son of Man,” the Lord told me, 3 “Tell the elders of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God asks, “Did you come to inquire of me? As long as I live, I won’t let myself be sought by you,” declares the Lord God.’
4 “Will you judge them? Son of Man, will you indeed judge them? Teach them about the detestable things that their ancestors did. 5 Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says, “The day I chose Israel, when I made my commitment[b] to the descendants of Jacob’s house, I revealed myself to them in the land of Egypt and I made my promise to them with the words, ‘I am the Lord your God.’ 6 That day I promised to bring them out of the land of Egypt to the land that I had explored for them—a land flowing with milk and honey. It’s the most beautiful of all lands. 7 Then I told them, ‘Each of you are to abandon your detestable practices.[c] You are not to defile yourselves with Egypt’s idols. I am the Lord your God.’”’”
A Brief History of Israel’s Rebellion
8 “But they rebelled against me and weren’t willing to obey me. None of them abandoned their detestable practices[d] or their Egyptian idols. So I said, ‘I’ll pour out my anger on them, extending my fury in the middle of the land of Egypt.’ 9 I did this so my reputation[e] might not be tarnished among the nations where they were living, among whom I made myself known in their presence when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. 10 I brought them out of the land of Egypt to bring them to the wilderness 11 where I gave them my statutes and revealed my ordinances to them, which if a person[f] observes, he’ll live by them. 12 Also, I instituted[g] my Sabbath for them as a sign between me and them, so they would know that I am the Lord, who has set them apart.”
Israel Rebels in the Wilderness
13 “But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They didn’t live by[h] my statutes. They despised my ordinances, which if a person observes, he’ll live by them. They greatly profaned my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my anger on them and bring them to an end in the wilderness. 14 I did this so my reputation wouldn’t be tarnished among the nations in whose presence I had brought them out.
15 “Moreover, I solemnly swore to them in the wilderness that I wouldn’t bring them to the land that I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands— 16 because they kept on rejecting my ordinances. They didn’t live life consistent with my statutes, they profaned my Sabbaths, and their hearts followed[i] their idols. 17 Even then, I[j] looked on them with compassion and didn’t completely destroy them in the wilderness. 18 I told their children in the wilderness, ‘You are not to follow the statutes of your ancestors, observe their ordinances, or be defiled by their idols. 19 I am the Lord your God. You are to follow my statutes, observe my ordinances, and keep them. 20 You are to make my Sabbaths holy, and you are to let them serve as a sign between you and me, so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’”
More of Israel’s Rebellion
21 “But they rebelled against me. They didn’t live according to my statutes, observe my ordinances, or practice them, by which a person will live. They also kept profaning my Sabbaths. So I said that I was going to pour out my anger on them and in my anger I’m going to bring about a complete end to them in the wilderness. 22 But I withdrew my decision[k] so my reputation wouldn’t be tarnished among the nations before whose eyes I brought them out.
23 “Furthermore, I solemnly swore in the wilderness to disperse them among the nations and scatter them to other[l] lands 24 because they didn’t observe my ordinances. Instead, they rejected my statutes, profaned my Sabbaths, and worshipped[m] their ancestors’ idols. 25 So I gave them statutes that weren’t good and ordinances by which they could not live. 26 I made them unclean because of their offerings, so they made all their firstborn[n] to pass through the fire, so that I could make them astonished. Then they’ll know that I am the Lord.”
The Blasphemy of Israel’s Ancestors
27 “Therefore, Son of Man, you are to speak to the children of Israel and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Your ancestors also blasphemed me in their treacherous behavior against me. 28 I brought them to the land that I had promised to give them. But whenever they saw any high hill and or any leafy tree, they slaughtered their sacrifices there and presented their offerings that provoked my anger. There they presented their pleasing aromas and poured out their drink offering. 29 So I asked them, ‘What is the high place to which you’re going?’ That’s why the name of the place has been called Bamah[o] to this day.”’
30 “Therefore you are to say to Israel’s house, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Will you defile yourselves like your ancestors did by acting as a prostitute, consistent with their horrible deeds? 31 When you present your gifts and make your sons pass through the fire, you continue to defile yourselves with your idols to this day. Should I be inquired of by you, you house of Israel? As I live,” declares the Lord, “I certainly won’t be inquired of by you.” 32 The thing that you’re imagining[p] is never going to happen, since you’re thinking, “We’ll be like the nations, like the clans of other[q] lands who serve gods made from wood and stone.”’”
The Coming Discipline of Israel
33 “As I live,” declares the Lord God, “with my powerful hand and outstretched arm, along with my wrath poured out, I’ll reign as king over you. 34 I’ll bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you were scattered. With a powerful hand, with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out, 35 I’ll bring you into the wilderness of the nations. I’ll judge you right there, face to face. 36 Just as I judged your ancestors in the wilderness in the land of Egypt, so I’ll judge you,” declares the Lord. 37 “I’ll cause you to pass under the rod until I will have brought you into the bond of the covenant. 38 I’ll eliminate the rebels among you, along with those who are transgressing against me. I’ll bring them out of the land where you’ve lived, but they won’t be able to enter the land of Israel. Then you’ll know that I am the Lord.”
The Coming Regathering of Israel
39 And now, you house of Israel, this is what the Lord God says, “Go ahead and serve your idols, both now and later, but later you’ll listen to me, and you won’t profane my sacred name again by your offerings and idols. 40 For on my holy mountain, on Israel’s high mountains,” declares the Lord God, “the whole of Israel’s house—all of it—will serve me there in the land. I’ll accept them there. And there I’ll demand your offerings, the first fruits of your portions of all your sacred things.
41 “When I will have brought you from among the people and have gathered you from the lands where you were scattered, I’ll accept you as a pleasing aroma. I’ll reveal my holiness among you, and the entire world will see it. 42 Then you’ll know that I, the Lord, brought you to the land of Israel, to the land that I promised to give to your ancestors. 43 You’ll remember all your practices and evil actions by which you’ve become defiled. You’ll loathe yourselves[r] because of all the evil things you’ve done. 44 Then you’ll know that I am the Lord, when I will have dealt with you for the benefit of my own reputation and not according to your evil attitudes or corrupt practices, you house of Israel,” declares the Lord God.
Coming Judgment on the South
45 [s]This message came to me from the Lord: 46 “Son of Man, turn to the south and oppose it, talking toward the south. 47 Prophesy against the forest of the Negev,[t] ‘Listen to this message from the Lord. This is what the Lord God says: “Look out! I’m about to ignite a fire and set it against you. It will devour every tree—whether green or dry—that lives in you. This powerful flame will not be extinguishable, and the entire surface from south to north will be scorched by it. 48 Then everyone[u] will see that I, the Lord, have kindled it, because it won’t be extinguished.”’”
Ezekiel’s Complaint to God
49 Then I said, “O Lord God! They’re saying about me, ‘Isn’t he one to propound parables?’”
