모세의 후계자 여호수아

31 모세는 계속해서 이스라엘 백성에게 말하였다.

2 “이제 내 나이가 120세나 되어 더 이상 여러분을 인도할 수 없게 되었습니다. 그리고 여호와께서도 내가 요단강을 건너가지 못할 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

3 그러나 여러분의 하나님 여호와께서 여러분보다 먼저 요단강을 건너가셔서 거기 살고 있는 민족들을 멸망시키시고 여러분이 그 땅을 점령할 수 있도록 하실 것입니다. 그리고 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 여호수아가 여러분의 새 지도자가 될 것입니다.

4 여호와께서는 아모리 사람들의 왕 시혼과 옥에게 행하신 것처럼 그들을 멸망시켜

5 여러분의 손에 넘겨 주실 것입니다. 그러므로 여러분은 내가 명령한 대로 그들에게 해야 합니다.

6 여러분은 마음을 굳게 먹고 용기를 가지십시오! 그들을 두려워하거나 그들 앞에서 떨지 마십시오! 여러분의 하나님 여호와께서 여러분과 함께하실 것이며 여러분을 떠나지 않고 여러분을 버리지 않으실 것입니다.”

7 그러고 나서 모세는 이스라엘 백성이 다 지켜 보는 가운데 여호수아를 불러 이렇게 말하였다. “너는 마음을 굳게 먹고 용기를 가져라! 네가 이 백성을 인도하여 여호와께서 그들의 조상들에게 약속하신 땅으로 들어가 그 땅을 정복해야 한다.

8 여호와께서 직접 너를 인도하시고 너와 함께하실 것이며 너를 버리거나 떠나지 않으실 것이다. 그러므로 너는 두려워하거나 낙심하지 말아라.”

매 7년마다 율법을 낭독하라

9 그 후 모세는 이 모든 율법을 기록하여 여호와의 법궤를 운반하는 레위 자손의 제사장들과 이스라엘의 모든 지도자들에게 주고

10-11 그들에게 이렇게 명령하였다. “여러분 은 매 7년의 마지막 해, 곧 모든 빚을 면제해 주는 해의 초막절에 백성들이 여호와께서 예배처로 정하신 곳으로 다 모이면 그들에게 이 법을 낭독해 주십시오.

12 여러분은 아이들을 포함한 백성의 모든 남녀와 여러분의 성에 사는 외국인을 모두 불러모아 그 법을 듣고 배우게 하여 여러분의 하나님 여호와를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 그분의 말씀에 따라 살게 하십시오.

13 그리고 이 법을 알지 못하는 여러분의 어린 자녀들에게도 이것을 들려 주어 여러분이 약속의 땅에 사는 동안 그들도 여러분의 하나님 여호와를 두려운 마음으로 섬기는 법을 배우게 하십시오.”

이스라엘 백성의 거역에 대한 예언

14 그 후 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이제 너는 죽을 때가 다 되었다. 너는 여호수아를 데리고 성막으로 오너라. 내가 그에게 지시할 것이 있다.” 그래서 모세와 여호수아가 성막으로 들어가자

15 여호와께서 성막 입구 구름 기둥 가운데 나타나셔서

16 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 곧 죽게 될 것이다. 그러나 네가 죽은 다음에는 이 백성이 들어가 살 그 땅에서 이방 신을 섬기고 나를 잊어버릴 것이며 내가 그들과 세운 계약을 어길 것이다.

17 그러면 내가 그들에게 노하여 그들을 저버리고 외면할 것이니 그들은 멸망할 것이다. 많은 재앙과 환난이 그들에게 밀어닥치면 그들은 자기들의 하나님인 내가 그들과 함께하지 않기 때문에 이 모든 일이 그들에게 일어나는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다.

18 그들이 다른 신을 섬기고 악을 행하므로 내가 그들을 외면해 버릴 것이다.

19 “이제 너는 이 노래를 기록하고 이스라엘 백성에게 가르쳐서 부르게 하여 그들에 대한 내 경고가 되게 하라.

20 내가 그들의 조상들에게 약속한 대로 기름지고 비옥한 땅으로 그들을 인도한 후 그들이 배불리 먹고 편안히 살게 될 때 그들은 다른 신들을 섬기고 나를 멸시하며 나와 맺은 계약을 어길 것이다.

21 많은 재앙과 환난이 그들에게 닥치면 이 노래가 그들에게 증거가 될 것이다. 이것은 그들의 자손이 이 노래를 잊지 않을 것이기 때문이다. 나는 그들을 약속의 땅으로 인도하기도 전에 그들이 생각하고 있는 것을 벌써 다 알고 있다.”

22 그래서 바로 그 날 모세는 이 노래를 기록하여 이스라엘 백성에게 가르쳤다.

23 그런 다음 여호와께서는 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 “너는 마음을 굳게 먹고 용기를 가져라. 네가 이스라엘 백성을 약속의 땅으로 인도해야 한다. 내가 항상 너와 함께하겠다” 하고 말씀하셨다.

24 모세가 이 율법의 말씀을 책에 모두 기록한 다음에

25 여호와의 법궤를 메는 레위 사람들에게 이렇게 지시하였다.

26 “여러분은 여호와의 법이 기록되어 있는 이 책을 여러분의 하나님 여호와의 법궤 곁에 두어 이스라엘 백성에게 경고가 되게 하십시오.

27 나는 여러분이 얼마나 고집을 피우며 거역하는지 잘 알고 있습니다. 내가 지금 살아서 여러분과 함께 있는 동안에도 여러분이 여호와를 거역하는데 내가 죽으면 얼마나 더 하겠습니까!

28 지금 여러분은 각 지파의 지도자들과 사무원들을 내 앞에 불러모으십시오. 내가 그들에게 이 말씀을 들려 주고 하늘과 땅을 그들의 증인으로 삼겠습니다.

29 내가 죽은 후에 여러분이 부패해져서 내 명령을 저버릴 것으로 나는 알고 있습니다. 여러분이 여호와께서 금하신 악을 행하여 여호와를 노하게 할 것이므로 [a]후일에 여러분에게 재앙이 닥칠 것입니다.”

30 그러고서 모세는 이스라엘 백성이 다 들을 수 있도록 이 노래를 처음부터 끝까지 낭송하였다.

31 Then Moses went[a] and spoke these words[b] to all Israel. 2 He said to them, “Today I am 120 years old. I am no longer able to get about,[c] and the Lord has said to me, ‘You will not cross the Jordan.’ 3 As for the Lord your God, he is about to cross over before you; he will destroy these nations before you, and you will dispossess them. As for Joshua, he is about to cross before you just as the Lord has said. 4 The Lord will do to them just what he did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, and to their land, which he destroyed. 5 The Lord will deliver them over to you, and you will do to them according to the whole commandment I have given you. 6 Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or tremble before them, for the Lord your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!” 7 Then Moses called out to Joshua[d] in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the Lord promised to give their ancestors,[e] and you will enable them to inherit it. 8 The Lord is indeed going before you—he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”

9 Then Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, and to all Israel’s elders. 10 He[f] commanded them: “At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the cancellation of debts,[g] at the Feast of Shelters,[h] 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses, you must read this law before them[i] within their hearing. 12 Gather the people—men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners[j] in your villages—so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the words of this law. 13 Then their children, who have not known this law,[k] will also hear about and learn to fear the Lord your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

The Commissioning of Joshua

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The day of your death is near. Summon Joshua and present yourselves in the tent[l] of meeting[m] so that I can commission him.”[n] So Moses and Joshua presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 The Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud that[o] stood above the door of the tent. 16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “You are about to die,[p] and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they[q] are going. They[r] will reject[s] me and break my covenant that I have made with them.[t] 17 At that time[u] my anger will erupt against them,[v] and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome[w] them[x] so that they[y] will say at that time, ‘Have not these disasters[z] overcome us[aa] because our[ab] God is not among us[ac] ?’ 18 But I will certainly[ad] hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they[ae] will have done by turning to other gods. 19 Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites! 20 For after I have brought them[af] to the land I promised to their[ag] ancestors—one flowing with milk and honey—and they[ah] eat their fill[ai] and become fat, then they[aj] will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant. 21 Then when[ak] many disasters and distresses overcome them[al] this song will testify against them,[am] for their[an] descendants will not forget it.[ao] I know the[ap] intentions they have in mind[aq] today, even before I bring them[ar] to the land I have promised.” 22 So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites, 23 and the Lord[as] commissioned Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you.”[at]

Anticipation of Disobedience

24 When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety, 25 he[au] commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the Lord’s covenant, 26 “Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. It will remain there as a witness against you, 27 for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness.[av] Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the Lord; you will be even more rebellious after my death![aw] 28 Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after I die you will totally[ax] corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in future days because you will act wickedly[ay] before the Lord, inciting him to anger because of your actions.”[az] 30 Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:

Joshua to Succeed Moses

31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(C) 3 The Lord your God himself will cross(D) over ahead of you.(E) He will destroy these nations(F) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(G) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. 4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(H) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. 5 The Lord will deliver(I) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous.(J) Do not be afraid or terrified(K) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(L) he will never leave you(M) nor forsake(N) you.”

7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(O) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(P) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(Q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(R) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Public Reading of the Law

9 So Moses wrote(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(V) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(X) you shall read this law(Y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(Z) to fear(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(AC) is near. Call Joshua(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(AF)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(AG) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(AH) and these people will soon prostitute(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(AK) with them and forsake(AL) them; I will hide(AM) my face(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AP) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

19 “Now write(AQ) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(AR) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(AS) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(AT) and worship them,(AU) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(AV) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(AW) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(AX) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(AY) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord gave this command(AZ) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(BA) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”

24 After Moses finished writing(BB) in a book the words of this law(BC) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(BD) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(BE) 27 For I know how rebellious(BF) and stiff-necked(BG) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(BH) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(BI) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(BJ) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

31 När Mose hade talat allt detta till Israels folk,

2 sa han till dem: Jag är nu 120 år gammal! Jag har inte möjlighet att leda er längre, för Herren har talat om för mig att jag inte ska gå över floden Jordan.

3 Men Herren själv kommer att leda er och förgöra de folk som bor där, och ni ska besegra dem. Josua blir er nye befälhavare, som Herren har sagt.

4 Herren ska förgöra folken som bor i landet, precis som han förgjorde Sihon och Og, de amoreiska kungarna.

7 Sedan kallade Mose till sig Josua och sa till honom inför hela Israel: Var stark och modig! Det är du som ska leda detta folk in i landet som Herren lovat deras förfäder. Se till att de intar det.

8 Var inte rädd, för Herren kommer att gå före dig och vara med dig. Han ska inte svika dig eller överge dig.

Mose skriver ner Guds lagar

9 Sedan skrev Mose ner de lagar som han redan hade meddelat folket och gav dem till prästerna, Levis söner, som bar arken med Herrens tio budord, och till de äldste i Israel.

10-11 Mose befallde att dessa lagar skulle läsas för allt folket vid slutet av vart sjunde år, friåret, under lövhyddohögtiden, när hela Israel var samlat vid helgedomen inför Herren.

12 Han sa: Sammankalla alla, män, kvinnor, barn och de främlingar som bor bland er. Låt dem få lyssna till Guds lagar och lära känna Guds vilja, så att de fruktar Herren, sin Gud, och lyder hans befallningar.

13 Gör det så att era barn, som inte känner till dessa lagar, får höra dem och lära sig frukta Herren, sin Gud, så länge ni bor i det utlovade landet.

Herren förutsäger folkets olydnad

14 Sedan sa Herren till Mose: Tiden är inne att du ska dö. Ta med dig Josua och kom in i tabernaklet så att jag kan insätta honom i hans uppgifter.Då gick Mose och Josua och ställde sig inför Herren i tabernaklet.

15 Han visade sig för dem i ett väldigt moln vid tältets ingång

16 och sa till Mose: Du ska dö och förenas med dina förfäder. När du är borta kommer folket att börja tillbe främmande gudar i det utlovade landet. De kommer att glömma bort mig och bryta det avtal som jag har gjort upp med dem.

17 Då kommer min vrede att upptändas mot dem, och jag ska överge dem och gömma mitt ansikte för dem, så att de kommer att förgås. Fruktansvärda svårigheter ska drabba dem, så att de måste säga: 'Gud finns inte längre ibland oss!'

18 Jag kommer att vända mig bort från dem på grund av att de har syndat och tillber andra gudar.

19 Skriv nu ner orden till följande sång och lär alla den och låt dem sjunga den. Den ska tjäna som bevis på att jag har varnat dem.

20 När jag har fört dem in i landet jag lovade deras förfäder, ett land som flyter av mjölk och honung, och när de har fått allt de kan önska sig, kommer de ändå att tillbe andra gudar, att förakta mig och att bryta förbundet med mig.

21 Och då, när stora olyckor och mycket elände drabbar dem, ska den här sången påminna dem om orsaken. Sången ska leva vidare från generation till generation. Jag vet redan nu, innan de ens har kommit in i landet, hurdana de är.

22 Redan samma dag skrev Mose ner orden till sången och lärde israeliterna den.

23 Han uppmanade Josua, Nuns son, att vara stark och modig och sa till honom: Du ska föra Israels folk in i det land som Herren har lovat dem. Herren säger: 'Jag ska vara med dig.'

24 När Mose hade skrivit ner alla lagar som finns antecknade i denna bok

25 gav han den till leviterna, som bar arken med de tio budorden,

26 och han bad dem att lägga lagboken bredvid arken som en påminnelse och varning till Israels folk.

27 Jag vet hur envisa och upproriska ni är, sa Mose till dem. Om ni nu, medan jag fortfarande är hos er, är så upproriska mot Herren, hur mycket värre kommer det då inte att bli efter min död!

28 Sammankalla nu alla de äldste och alla ledare för de olika stammarna, så att jag kan få tala till dem och ta himmel och jord till vittnen mot dem.

29 Jag vet att ni efter min död kommer att avfalla och vända er bort från Gud och hans lagar. Olycka ska drabba er under kommande dagar, därför att ni kommer att göra sådant som Herren säger är synd och därmed uppväcka hans vrede.

30 Mose läste sedan upp denna sång för allt folket i Israel:

31 And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.

2 And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the Lord hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

3 The Lord thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the Lord hath said.

4 And the Lord shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.

5 And the Lord shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.

6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the Lord hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

8 And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and unto all the elders of Israel.

10 And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,

11 When all Israel is come to appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.

12 Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:

13 And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

15 And the Lord appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle.

16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.

20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.

21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.

22 Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.

23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,

25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying,

26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord; and how much more after my death?

28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.

29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.

30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.
