여호수아가 새 지도자가 되다
31 모세가 온 이스라엘 백성에게 이 모든 것을 다 말한 뒤에 2 이렇게 덧붙였다. “이제 내 나이 백스무 살이니 더는 너희 앞에 서서 너희를 지도할 수가 없다. 주께서는 내게 ‘너는 요단 강을 건너지 못할 것이다.’라고 말씀하셨다. 3 주 너희 하나님께서 몸소 너희를 앞서 건너가실 것이다. 그분이 너희 앞에서 이 모든 민족들을 다 멸하시리니, 너희가 그들의 땅을 차지하게 될 것이다. 주께서 약속하신 대로 여호수아 또한 너희 앞에서 건너갈 것이다.
4 주께서 아모리 사람의 왕이었던 시혼과 옥과 그들의 땅을 멸하신 것처럼 그들도 멸하실 것이다. 5 주께서 너희에게 그 민족들을 넘기시리니 너희는 내가 명한 대로 그들에게 하여야 한다. 6 강하고 담대하여라. 주 너희 하나님께서 너희와 함께 가시니, 그들 때문에 두려워하지도 말고 무서워하지도 말아라. 주께서는 결코 너희를 떠나지도 않으시고 버리지도 않으실 것이다.”
7 그런 다음 모세가 여호수아를 불러서 온 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 말하였다. “너는 강하고 담대하여라. 너는 이 사람들을 이끌고 주께서 그들에게 주시겠다고 그들의 조상에게 맹세하신 땅으로 들어가야 한다. 그리고 그 땅을 이 사람들에게 유산으로 나누어 주어야 한다. 8 주께서 몸소 너를 앞서 가시고 너와 함께 계실 것이다. 그분은 결코 너를 떠나지도 않으시고 버리지도 않으실 것이다. 너는 두려워하지도 말고 용기를 잃지도 말아라.”
모세가 율법을 두루마리에 쓰다
9 모세는 이 율법을 글로 적어서 주의 계약궤를 메는 레위 자손 제사장들과 이스라엘의 모든 장로에게 주었다. 10 그리고 그들에게 이렇게 명령하였다. “칠 년마다 한 번씩 빚을 면제해 주기로 정해진 해의 초막절에, 11 온 이스라엘 백성이 주께서 택하신 곳으로 가서, 주 너희 하나님 앞으로 나올 것이다. 그때에 너희가 이 율법을 온 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 읽어 들려주어라. 12 너희는 이스라엘의 남자와 여자와 어린 아이만이 아니라, 너희의 성읍에 몸 붙여 사는 외국 사람도 불러 모아라. 그리하여 그들이 듣고 배워서 주 너희 하나님을 두려워하고 이 율법의 말씀을 성심껏 지키게 하여라. 13 너희가 요단 강을 건너가 차지하는 땅에서 살게 될 때에, 이 율법을 알지 못하는 너희의 자손도 듣고 배워서, 주 너희 하나님을 두려워하게 하여라.”
주께서 모세와 여호수아를 부르시다
14 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이제 네가 죽을 날이 가까이 왔으니, 여호수아를 불러 함께 만남의 장막으로 나오너라. 거기에서 내가 여호수아에게 일러둘 말이 있다.” 그리하여 모세와 여호수아가 만남의 장막 앞으로 나왔다.
15 그러자 주께서 구름기둥 가운데서 장막에 나타나셨다. 구름기둥은 장막 어귀 위에 머물러 있었다. 16 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 이제 곧 죽을 것이다. 그러면 이 백성은 나에 대한 신의를 저버리고, 그들이 들어갈 땅의 이방 신들을 섬길 것이다. 그들은 나를 저버리고 내가 자기들과 맺은 계약도 깨뜨릴 것이다. 17 그러면 내가 그들 때문에 아주 화가 나서 그들을 버리고, 그들에게서 내 얼굴을 숨기리니, 그들은 망하고 말 것이다. 그래서 그들은 수많은 재앙과 어려움이 덮치는 날 이렇게 말할 것이다. ‘우리 하나님께서 우리 가운데 계시지 않기 때문에 이런 재앙이 닥친 것은 아닐까?’ 18 그러나 그들이 돌아서서 다른 신을 섬기며 온갖 악한 짓을 저질렀으니, 나 주는 그 날에 그들에게서 내 얼굴을 숨기겠다.
19 이제 너희를 위해 이 노래를 적어서 이스라엘 백성에게 가르쳐 부르게 하여라. 그리하여 이 노래가 이스라엘 백성을 고발하는 나의 증거가 되게 하여라. 20 내가 그들의 조상에게 맹세한 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 그 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어가면, 그들은 배불리 먹고 잘 살게 될 것이다. 그렇게 되면 그들은 나를 저버리고, 나의 계약을 깨뜨리고, 다른 신들에게 돌아서서 그 신들을 섬길 것이다. 21 그리하여 수많은 재앙과 어려움이 덮치게 되면 그들의 자손들도 이 노래는 잊지 않았을 것이니, 이 노래가 그들을 고발하여 증언할 것이다. 내가 그들에게 주겠다고 맹세한 땅으로 아직 그들을 데리고 들어가지는 않았다. 그러나 나는 이미 그들이 거기에서 어떤 짓을 할 지 다 알고 있다.”
22 그 날에 모세는 이 노래를 적어서 이스라엘 백성에게 가르쳐 주었다.
23 주께서 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 이렇게 명령하셨다. “강하고 담대하여라. 너는 이스라엘 백성을 데리고 내가 그들에게 주겠다고 맹세한 땅으로 들어가야 한다. 내가 친히 너와 함께 있겠다.”
모세가 이스라엘 사람들에게 경고하다
24 모세가 이 율법의 말씀을 처음부터 끝까지 두루마리에 모두 적은 뒤에, 25 주의 계약궤를 메는 레위 자손들에게 이렇게 명령하였다. 26 “이 율법책을 가져가서 주 너희 하나님의 계약궤 옆에 두어라. 그것은 너희가 계약의 조건들을 받아들였다는 증거로 거기에 남아 있을 것이다. 27 나는 너희가 반항적이며 고집이 세다는 것을 알고 있다. 너희는 내가 살아서 너희와 함께 있는 동안에도 주께 그렇게 반항하였는데, 내가 죽은 다음에는 오죽하겠느냐! 28 너희 각 가문의 장로들과 관리들을 내 앞으로 다 불러 모아라. 내가 이 말씀을 그들의 귀에 들려주고 하늘과 땅을 증인으로 세우겠다. 29 나는 안다. 내가 죽은 뒤에 너희는 틀림없이 부패한 짓을 하여 내가 너희에게 명한 길에서 돌아설 것이다. 너희가 주님 보시기에 악한 짓을 하고, 너희의 손으로 만든 것으로 주를 노하게 할 것이니, 앞으로 너희에게 재앙이 덮칠 것이다.”

30 그런 다음 모세는 온 이스라엘 회중이 듣는 앞에서 이 노래의 가사를 처음부터 끝까지 다 읊었다.

Joshua to Succeed Moses
31 So Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them, “I am (A)120 years old today. I am no longer able to (B)go out and come in. The Lord has said to me, (C)‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’ 3 The Lord your God (D)himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations before you, so that you shall dispossess them, and Joshua will go over at your head, (E)as the Lord has spoken. 4 And the Lord will do to them (F)as he did to Sihon (G)and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them. 5 And the Lord will give them over to you, and you shall do to them (H)according to the whole commandment that I have commanded you. 6 (I)Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, (J)for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. (K)He will not leave you or forsake you.”
7 Then (L)Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, (M)“Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. 8 It is the Lord (N)who goes before you. He will be with you; (O)he will not leave you or forsake you. (P)Do not fear or be dismayed.”
The Reading of the Law
9 Then Moses (Q)wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, (R)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, (S)“At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at (T)the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes (U)to appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose, (V)you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 (W)Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, (X)who have not known it, (Y)may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, (Z)as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
Joshua Commissioned to Lead Israel
14 And the Lord said to Moses, (AA)“Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that (AB)I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 And (AC)the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent.
16 And the Lord said to Moses, (AD)“Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and (AE)whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will (AF)forsake me and (AG)break my covenant that I have made with them. 17 Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and (AH)I will forsake them and (AI)hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, (AJ)‘Have not these evils come upon us because (AK)our God is not among us?’ 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because (AL)they have turned to other gods.
19 “Now therefore write (AM)this song and (AN)teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be (AO)a witness for me against the people of Israel. 20 For when I have brought them into the land (AP)flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and (AQ)grown fat, (AR)they will turn to other gods and serve them, and (AS)despise me and (AT)break my covenant. 21 And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as (AU)a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For (AV)I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give.” 22 So Moses wrote this song the same day and taught it to the people of Israel.
23 (AW)And the Lord[a] commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, (AX)“Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them. (AY)I will be with you.”
24 When Moses had finished (AZ)writing the words of this law in a book to the very end, 25 Moses commanded (BA)the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, 26 “Take this Book of the Law (BB)and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for (BC)a witness against you. 27 For I know how rebellious and (BD)stubborn you are. Behold, even today while I am yet alive with you, (BE)you have been rebellious against the Lord. How much more after my death! 28 Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak (BF)these words in their ears and (BG)call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death (BH)you will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. And (BI)in the days to come (BJ)evil will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the Lord, (BK)provoking him to anger through the work of your hands.”
The Song of Moses
30 Then Moses spoke the words of this song until they were finished, in the ears of all the assembly of Israel:
