19 어떤사람이요압에게 “왕이압 살롬의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 울고 있습니다” 하고 전해주었다.
2 그러자 전쟁에 이긴 그 날의 기쁨은 슬 픔으로 변하고 말았다. 이것은 왕이 아 들의 죽음을 슬퍼한다는 말이 병사들 에게들렸기때문이었다.
3 그래서 다윗의 전 군대는 마치 전쟁에 진 패잔병처럼 얼굴을 제대로 들지 못 하고 기가 죽어 슬금슬금 성으로 들어 갔다.
4 왕이손으로얼굴을가리고계속울면 서 “내 아들 압살롬아! 압살롬아! 내 아 들아 내 아들아!” 하고 부르짖자
5 요압이 왕에게 가서 이렇게 말하였다. “우리는오늘왕과왕의자녀들과왕 비와 후궁들의 생명을 구했는데 왕은 오히려 우리를 부끄럽게 하였습니다.
6 왕이 왕을 미워하는 자는 사랑하시고 왕을 사랑하는 자는 오히려 미워하시 니결국우리는왕에게아무가치도 없는 존재가 되고 말았습니다. 만일 압살롬이 살고 우리가 모두 죽었더라 면왕은오히려더기뻐했을뻔했습니 다.
7 이제 일어나 나가셔서 우리 병사들을 격려해 주십시오. 내가 여호와의 이름 으로 맹세하지만 만일 왕이 그렇게 하 지 않으시면 오늘 밤 왕과 함께 머물러 있을 사람이 하나도 없을 것입니다. 그 렇게되면왕은지금까지당하신그어 떤 불행보다도 더 큰 불행을 당하게 될 것입니다.”
8 그래서 왕은 일어나 성문 곁에 가서 앉 았다. 그가거기에있다는소문이성 안에퍼지자모든사람이왕에게나아 왔다.
예루살렘으로 돌아오는 다윗
한편 이스라엘군은 모두 도망하여 자 기 집에 돌아가 있었다.
9 그들은 각처에서 서로 논쟁하며 이렇 게 말하였다. “다윗왕은 우리를 우리 원수들에게서 구원하시고 또 우리를 블레셋 사람에게서 구출하셨다. 그러 나 지금은 압살롬을 피해 나라를 떠나 계신다.
10 우리가왕으로세웠던압살롬은이제 전사하고 말았다. 그런데 어째서 다윗 왕을 다시 모셔오는 일에 대해서 아무 도 말이 없는가?”
11-12 그때다윗이제사장사독과아비아 달을 유다 장로들에게 보내며 말하였 다. “당신들은 그들에게 이렇게 전하시 오. ‘온 이스라엘이 왕을 궁으로 다시 모시자고 야단인데 어째서 당신들은 아무 말이 없소? 당신들은 나와 같은 지파이며 살과 피를 함께 나눈 나의 형 제들이아니오.’
13 그리고당신들은아마사에게이렇게 전하시오. ‘너는 나와 살과 피를 나눈 친척이 아니냐? 내가 요압 대신 너를 내 군대의 총사령관으로 임명하겠다. 내가 만일 그렇게 하지 않으면 하나님 이나에게엄한벌을내리시기원한 다.’ ”
14 이렇게해서다윗이모든유다사람들 의 마음을 일제히 돌이키자 그들은 왕 에게 이런 전갈을 보냈다. “왕은 모든 신하들을 데리고 우리에게 돌아오십 시오.”
15 그래서왕은예루살렘을향해출발하 였다. 그가요단강에이르렀을때유 다사람들이왕을모셔가려고길갈로 나왔다.
16 그때 바후림에 있는 베냐민 사람 게라 의 아들 시므이가 다윗왕을 영접하려 고유다사람들과함께급히내려왔 다.
17 그리고 베냐민 사람 1,000명도 그와 함께 왔는데 그 가운데는 사울의 신하 시바와 그의 아들 15명과 20명의 종도 포함되어 있었다. 그들은 왕보다 먼저 요단강에도착하여
18 왕의 가족을 실어 나르며 왕을 도우려 고 강을 건너갔다.
다윗이 시므이에게 자비를 베풂
왕이강을건너려할때시므이가왕 앞에 엎드려
19 애걸하였다. “내 주 왕이시여, 나를 용 서하시고 왕이 예루살렘을 떠나실 때 제가 행한 무례한 행동을 기억하지 마 소서.
20 제가 죽을 죄를 지었습니다. 제가 이것 을 알기 때문에 왕을 영접하려고 요셉 지파의 다른 모든 사람들보다도 먼저 이렇게내려왔습니다.”
21 이때 스루야의 아들 아비새가 “시므이 는여호와께서세우신왕을저주하였 으니 당연히 죽어야 하지 않습니까?” 하자
22 다윗이 이렇게 대답하였다. “스루야의 아들들아, 내가 너희와 무슨 상관이 있다고 오늘 너희가 나의 대적이 되려 고하느냐? 나는이제이스라엘의왕 이된사람이다. 오늘같은날에이스 라엘에서 사람이 죽어서야 되겠느 냐?”
23 그러고서그는시므이에게그를죽이 지 않겠다고 맹세하였다.
므비보셋에게 친절을 보이는 다윗
24-25 사울의 손자 므비보셋이 왕을 맞 으러 예루살렘에서 왔다. 그는 왕이 예 루살렘을 떠난 날부터 발을 씻지 않고 옷도 빨아 입지 않았으며 수염도 깎지 않았다. 그러자왕이그를보고물었 다. “므비보셋아, 너는 왜 나와 함께 가 지않았느냐?”
26 “내 주 왕이시여, 왕도 아시겠지만 저 는 절뚝발이입니다. 그래서 제가 왕과 함께가려고내종시바에게나귀안 장을 지우라고 했으나 그가 나를 배신 하고
27 [a]거짓말로 왕 앞에서 나를 비방했습니 다. 하지만내주왕은하나님의천사 와같은분이십니다. 그러니왕의처 분대로 하십시오.
28 나와 내 친척들은 왕의 손에 죽어도 마 땅한 사람들입니다. 그러나 왕은 오히 려이종에게왕의식탁에서먹을수 있는 영광을 주셨습니다. 그런데 제가 무슨염치로왕에게더구할것이있 겠습니까?”
29 “[b]알았다. 내가사울의밭을너와시바 에게 똑같이 분배해 주겠다.”
30 “그 땅을 전부 그에게 주십시오. 저는 왕이 궁으로 다시 돌아오신 것만으로 도 족합니다.”
바실래에게 친절을 보이는 다윗
31-32 다윗이망명길에있을때마하나 임에서 왕과 그와 함께 있던 사람들에 게 음식을 제공해 주었던 길르앗 사람 바실래가 왕을 도와 강을 건너게 하려 고 로글림에서 내려왔다. 그는 부유한 사람이지만이제나이가많 80세의 늙은 노인이 되었다.
33 왕이 바실래에게 “나와 함께 건너가서 예루살렘에서 같이 살도록 합시다. 내 가 당신을 보살펴 드리겠습니다” 하자
34 바실래가이렇게말하였다. “아닙니 다. 내가 그러기에는 너무 늙었습니 다.
35 이제내나 80인데어찌좋고나쁜 것을 분간할 수 있겠습니까? 나는 먹 고마시는것도맛을알수없으며좋 은 노랫소리를 들어도 즐거운 것을 모 르는사람이되었으니오히려왕에게 부담만될것입니다.
36 나는 잠시 왕을 모시고 강을 건너려는 것뿐인데 왕은 어째서 나에게 이런 보 상을 하려고 하십니까?
37 나를 부모가 묻혀 있는 고향 땅으로 돌 아가게 해 주십시오. 나는 거기서 죽고 싶습니다. 그러나 여기에 왕을 섬길 내 아들 김함이 있습니다. 저를 왕과 함께 건너가게 하시고 그에게 왕이 좋을 대 로해주십시오.”
38 그러자 왕이 “좋소. 내가 김함을 데리 고가서당신이원하는대로그에게 해 주겠소” 하였다.
39 그러고서 다윗이 백성들과 함께 요단 강을 건넌 다음 바실래에게 입을 맞추 고 축복하자 그는 자기 집으로 돌아갔 다.
왕에대한논쟁
40 그리고 왕은 김함을 데리고 거기서 길 갈로 갔으며 모든 유다 사람들과 이스 라엘 사람 절반이 왕을 뒤따라왔다.
41 그러나이스라엘사람들은유다사람 들이몰래왕과그의가족과그와함 께한 사람들을 나룻배에 실어 요단강 을 건네 주었다는 이유로 왕에게 와서 불평하였다.
42 그러자유다사람들이이렇게대답하 였다. “왕이 우리 지파 사람이기 때문 에 그렇게 했을 뿐이다. 어째서 너희는 이런일로화를내느냐? 우리는왕에 게아무폐도끼친것이없다. 왕은우 리를 먹여 주지 않았고 우리에게 선물 을준것도없다.”
43 이때이스라엘사람들이유다사람들 에게 대꾸하였다. “비록 왕이 너희 지 파 사람이긴 하지만 [c]우리는 열 지파 나된다. 그래서우리는왕에대하여 주장할수있는권리를너희보다열 배나더가지고있다. 그런데어째서 너희는 우리를 무시하느냐? 너희가 왕 을 모셔오기 전에 먼저 우리와 상의를 했어야 하지 않았느냐?” 그러나 유다 사람들의 주장이 이스라엘 사람들의 주장보다 더 강력하였다.

요압이 다윗에게 항의하다
19 “임금님께서 압살롬 때문에 몹시 슬퍼하며 울고 계십니다.”라는 소식이 요압에게 전해졌다.
2 모든 병사에게 그날의 승리는 슬픔으로 변하고 말았다. “임금님께서 아드님의 죽음으로 몹시 슬퍼하고 계신다.”는 소식이 전군에 퍼졌기 때문이다.
3 그날 병사들은 마치 싸움터에서 달아난 병사들이 부끄러워 얼굴도 못 들고 슬그머니 돌아오듯 슬그머니 성 안으로 들어왔다. 4 왕은 얼굴을 가린 채 “오, 내 아들 압살롬아! 오, 압살롬, 내 아들, 내 아들아!” 하고 울부짖고 있었다.
5 그때 요압이 왕이 머무는 집으로 들어가서 왕에게 말하였다. “오늘 우리는 임금님과 임금님의 아들딸과 왕비들과 후궁들의 목숨을 건져 드렸습니다. 그러나 임금님께서는 오히려 우리를 부끄럽게 만드셨습니다. 6 임금님께서는 임금님을 미워하는 자를 사랑하시고, 임금님을 사랑하는 자들을 오히려 미워하고 계십니다. 오늘 임금님께서는 우리 지휘관들과 우리의 부하가 임금님께는 아무 것도 아니라는 사실을 확인시켜 주셨습니다. 오늘 압살롬이 살고 우리가 모두 죽었더라면 임금님께서 좋아하실 뻔 하였습니다. 7 이제 일어나 나가셔서 병사들을 격려해 주십시오. 내가 주님을 걸고 맹세하지만, 임금님께서 지금 나가지 않으시면, 오늘 밤에는 한 사람도 임금님 곁에 남아 있지 않을 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 임금님께서 어렸을 때부터 지금까지 당하신 어떤 불행보다도 더 큰 불행을 당하시게 될 것입니다.”
8 그러자 왕이 일어나 성문으로 나가 앉았다. “임금님께서 성문에 앉아 계시다.”는 소식이 병사들에게 전해지자 모든 병사가 왕 앞으로 나왔다.
다윗이 예루살렘으로 돌아가다
그 사이에 압살롬을 따르던 이스라엘 사람들은 모두 도망하여 자기 집으로 돌아갔다. 9 이스라엘 백성은 가문마다 의논이 분분하였다. “다윗 왕이 우리를 원수의 손에서 구해 주셨다. 블레셋 사람의 손에서 우리를 구해 주신 분도 그분이시다. 그런 분이 지금 압살롬 때문에 다른 나라로 피해가셨다. 10 우리가 압살롬에게 기름을 부어 우리를 다스리는 왕으로 삼았으나 그는 전쟁에서 죽었다. 그런데 우리는 어찌하여 임금님을 다시 모셔 오는 일에 입을 다물고 있는가?”
11 다윗 왕이 두 제사장 사독과 아비아달에게 다음과 같은 전갈을 보냈다. “유다 가문의 장로들에게 이렇게 물어 주시오. ‘그대들은 어찌하여 왕을 다시 왕궁으로 모시는 일에 맨 나중 가문이 되려 하오? 온 이스라엘이 수군거리는 소리가 왕이 있는 곳에까지 들려왔소. 12 그대들은 살과 피를 나눈 나의 형제들이오. 그런데 어찌하여 왕을 다시 모시는 일에 맨 나중이 되려 하오?’ 13 그리고 아마사에게는 이렇게 전해 주시오. ‘그대는 나와 살과 피를 나눈 가족이 아니오? 그대가 요압을 대신하여 군대의 총사령관이 되지 않는다면, 하나님께서 나에게 무슨 벌을 내리시더라도 내가 달게 받겠소.’”
14 이렇게 다윗 왕은 온 유다 가문 사람의 마음을 하나같이 자기 쪽으로 기울게 하였다. 그들이 왕에게 사람을 보내어 말을 전하게 하였다. “임금님께서는 모든 부하를 거느리고 돌아오십시오.”
15 왕이 돌아오는 길에 요단 강에 이르니 유다 사람들이 이미 길갈에 와 있었다. 그들은 왕을 맞이하여 모시고 요단 강을 건너려고 미리 거기에 와서 기다리고 있었다.
다윗이 시므이를 용서하다
16 바후림에 사는 베냐민 사람으로 게라의 아들인 시므이도 유다 사람들과 함께 다윗 왕을 맞으려고 서둘러 내려왔다. 17 그와 함께 베냐민 사람 천 명이 오고, 사울 집안의 종이었던 시바도 아들 열다섯과 종 스물을 데리고 왔다. 이 모든 사람이 다윗 왕을 맞으려고 서둘러 요단 강으로 왔다.
18 이들은 왕의 집안이 건너오는 것을 돕고 왕이 원하는 것은 무엇이든지 하려고 강나루를 건너왔다. 게라의 아들 시므이는 강을 건너와 왕 앞에 엎드려 19 말하였다. “임금님, 저의 허물을 마음에 두지 마십시오. 임금님께서 예루살렘을 떠나시던 날 이 종이 저지른 잘못을 기억하시거나 마음에 품지 마시기 바랍니다. 20 이 종이 죄를 지은 줄을 잘 알고 있습니다. 그리하여 오늘 이 종이 요셉 가문[a] 가운데서 가장 먼저 임금님을 뵈려고 내려왔습니다.”
21 그때 스루야의 아들 아비새가 말하였다. “주께서 기름 부으신 왕을 저주한 시므이는 처형해야 마땅하지 않습니까?”
22 다윗이 대답하였다. “스루야의 아들들이여, 내가 그대들과 무슨 상관이 있기에 오늘 그대들이 나의 적이 되려 하오? 오늘에야 비로소 내가 온 이스라엘의 왕이 된 듯 한데 이런 날에 이스라엘에서 한 사람이라도 처형을 당해서야 되겠소?”
23 왕이 시므이에게 “너를 죽이지 않겠다.”라고 말하였다. 그런 다음 왕은 맹세까지 하며 그에게 약속하였다.
므비보셋이 다윗을 만나러 오다
24 사울의 손자인 므비보셋도 다윗 왕을 맞으러 내려왔다. 왕이 예루살렘을 떠난 날부터 다시 평안하게 돌아오는 날까지 므비보셋은 발도 돌보지 않고, 수염도 다듬지 않고, 옷도 빨아 입지 않았다. 25 그가 예루살렘에서 내려와 왕을 맞으니 왕이 그에게 물었다. “므비보셋 너는 어찌하여 나와 함께 가지 않았느냐?”
26 그가 대답하였다. “임금님, 이 종이 발을 못 쓰는지라 이렇게 말하였습니다. ‘내 나귀에 안장을 얹어라. 내가 나귀를 타고 임금님과 함께 가겠다.’ 그러나 제 종 시바가 저를 배신하고 27 임금님께 가서 저를 나쁘게 말씀드렸습니다. 그러나 임금님께서는 하나님의 천사와 같은 분이시니 임금님께서 좋으실 대로 하십시오. 28 우리 할아버지의 자손은 모두 임금님의 손에 죽어 마땅한데도, 임금님께서는 오히려 이 종을 왕의 임금님의 식탁에 앉도록 해 주셨습니다. 그러니 이 종이 무슨 권리로 더 이상 임금님께 호소하겠습니까?”
29 왕이 므비보셋에게 말하였다. “네 문제에 대해서 더는 말하지 말아라. 내가 결정을 내렸다. 너와 시바는 밭을 나누어 가져라.”
30 므비보셋이 왕에게 말하였다. “임금님, 임금님께서 무사히 왕궁으로 돌아오셨으니 시바에게 다 가지라고 하십시오.”
다윗이 바르실래에게 호의를 베풀다
31 길르앗 사람 바르실래도 로글림에서 내려왔다. 왕을 모시고 요단 강을 건넌 다음 그곳에서 왕을 배웅하려는 것이었다. 32 그런데 바르실래는 아주 늙어서 나이가 여든이나 되었다. 그는 큰 부자였으므로 왕이 마하나임에 머무는 동안 왕에게 음식을 대었다. 33 왕이 바르실래에게 말하였다. “나와 함께 강을 건너가 예루살렘에 머물도록 하시지요. 내가 잘 대접해 드리겠습니다.”
34 그러나 바르실래가 왕에게 대답하였다. “제가 살면 얼마나 더 산다고 임금님과 함께 예루살렘으로 올라가겠습니까? 35 제 나이 여든입니다. 제가 이 나이에 좋은 것과 나쁜 것을 가릴 줄 알겠습니까? 이 종이 먹고 마신들 그 맛을 알겠습니까? 노래하는 남녀가 노래를 부른들 이 종이 그 소리를 알아듣기나 하겠습니까? 그러니 이 종이 무엇 때문에 임금님께 짐 하나를 더 보태겠습니까? 36 이 종은 임금님을 모시고 잠시 요단 강을 건너려는 것뿐입니다. 그런데 어찌하여 임금님께서 저에게 이런 상을 베풀려 하십니까? 37 이 종을 돌아가게 해 주셔서 부디 고향에서 죽어 아버님과 어머님의 무덤에 묻히게 하여 주십시오. 그러나 임금님의 종 김함이 여기 있으니 그가 임금님을 모시고 강을 건너게 해 주십시오. 그리고 임금님 좋으실 대로 그 아이를 돌보아 주십시오.”
38 왕이 대답하였다. “그러면 김함을 데리고 가겠습니다. 그리고 노인께서 바라시는 것을 모두 그에게 해 주겠습니다. 그리고 노인께서 나에게 바라시는 것이 있으면 노인을 위해 내가 해 드리겠습니다.”
다윗이 왕궁으로 돌아가다
39 그리하여 모든 사람이 요단 강을 건넌 다음 왕도 건넜다. 왕이 바르실래에게 입맞추고 복을 빌어 주자 바르실래가 고향으로 돌아갔다.
40 왕이 길갈로 건너갈 때에 김함도 함께 건너갔다. 온 유다 군대와 이스라엘 군대 절반이 왕을 모시고 건너갔다.
이스라엘 사람들과 유다 사람들이 다투다
41 온 이스라엘 사람이 왕에게 몰려가서 말하였다. “어찌하여 우리의 형제인 유다 사람들이 임금님을 몰래 빼돌려, 임금님과 임금님의 가족과 임금님의 모든 신하를 모시고 요단 강을 건넜습니까?”
42 그러자 온 유다 사람이 이스라엘 사람에게 대답하였다. “우리가 이렇게 한 것은 임금님께서 우리와 가까운 친척이기 때문이다. 너희는 어찌하여 그것을 가지고 화를 내느냐? 우리가 이 일로 무엇을 얻은 것이 있더냐?”
43 이스라엘 사람들이 유다 사람들에게 대답하였다. “우리가 다윗 왕에게 주장할 권리가 너희보다 열 배나 된다. 그런데 어찌하여 너희가 우리를 업신여기느냐? 임금님을 다시 모셔 오자고 처음 말한 것도 우리가 아니더냐?”
그러나 유다 사람들은 더 억세게 이스라엘 사람들의 말을 되받았다.

19 Avisaron a Joab que el rey estaba llorando amargamente por Absalón. 2 Cuando las tropas se enteraron de que el rey estaba afligido por causa de su hijo, la victoria de aquel día se convirtió en duelo para todo el ejército. 3 Por eso las tropas entraron en la ciudad furtivamente, como lo hace un ejército abochornado por haber huido del combate. 4 Pero el rey, cubriéndose la cara, seguía gritando a voz en cuello: «¡Ay, Absalón, hijo mío! ¡Ay, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!»
5 Entonces Joab fue adonde estaba el rey y le dijo: «Hoy has llenado de vergüenza a todos tus siervos que te salvaron la vida, y la de tus hijos e hijas y esposas y concubinas. 6 ¡Amas a quienes te odian, y odias a quienes te aman! Hoy has dejado muy en claro que nada te importan tus generales ni tus soldados. Ahora me doy cuenta de que tú preferirías que todos nosotros estuviéramos muertos, con tal de que Absalón siguiera con vida. 7 ¡Vamos! ¡Sal y anima a tus tropas! Si no lo haces, juro por el Señor que para esta noche ni un solo soldado se quedará contigo. ¡Y eso sería peor que todas las calamidades que has sufrido desde tu juventud hasta ahora!»
8 Ante esto, el rey se levantó y fue a sentarse junto a la puerta de la ciudad. Cuando los soldados lo supieron, fueron todos a presentarse ante él.
David regresa a Jerusalén
Los israelitas, mientras tanto, habían huido a sus hogares, 9 y por todas las tribus de Israel se hablaba de la situación. Decían: «El rey nos rescató del poder de nuestros enemigos; él nos libró del dominio de los filisteos. Por causa de Absalón tuvo que huir del país. 10 Pero ahora Absalón, al que habíamos ungido como rey, ha muerto en la batalla. ¿Qué nos impide pedirle al rey que vuelva?»
11 Entonces el rey David mandó este mensaje a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar: «Hablad con los ancianos de Judá y decidles: “El rey se ha enterado de lo que se habla por todo Israel. ¿Seréis vosotros los últimos en pedirme a mí, el rey, que regrese a mi palacio? 12 Vosotros sois mis hermanos, ¡sois de mi propia sangre! ¿Por qué habéis de ser los últimos en llamarme?” 13 Decidle también a Amasá: “¿Acaso no eres de mi propia sangre? Tú serás de por vida el general de mi ejército, en lugar de Joab. ¡Que Dios me castigue sin piedad si no lo cumplo!”»
14 Así el rey se ganó el aprecio de todos los de Judá, quienes a una voz le pidieron que regresara con todas sus tropas, 15 de modo que el rey emprendió el viaje y llegó hasta el Jordán. Los de Judá se dirigieron entonces a Guilgal para encontrarse con el rey y acompañarlo a cruzar el río. 16 Pero el benjaminita Simí hijo de Guerá, oriundo de Bajurín, se apresuró a bajar con los de Judá para recibir al rey David. 17 Con él iban mil benjaminitas, e incluso Siba, que había sido administrador de la familia de Saúl, con sus quince hijos y veinte criados. Estos llegaron al Jordán antes que el rey 18 y vadearon el río para ponerse a las órdenes del rey y ayudar a la familia real a cruzar el Jordán. Cuando el rey estaba a punto de cruzarlo, Simí hijo de Guerá se inclinó ante él 19 y le dijo:
―Ruego a mi señor el rey que no tome en cuenta mi delito ni recuerde el mal que hizo este tu siervo el día en que mi señor salió de Jerusalén. Le ruego a mi señor que olvide eso. 20 Reconozco que he pecado, y por eso hoy, de toda la tribu de José, he sido el primero en salir a recibir a mi señor el rey.
21 Pero Abisay hijo de Sarvia exclamó:
―¡Simí maldijo al ungido del Señor, y merece la muerte!
22 David respondió:

23 Y dirigiéndose a Simí, el rey le juró:
―¡No morirás!
24 También Mefiboset, el nieto de Saúl, salió a recibir al rey. No se había lavado los pies ni la ropa, ni se había recortado el bigote, desde el día en que el rey tuvo que irse hasta que regresó sano y salvo. 25 Cuando llegó de Jerusalén para recibir al rey, este le preguntó:
―Mefiboset, ¿por qué no viniste conmigo?
26 ―Mi señor y rey, como este tu siervo es cojo, yo quería que me aparejaran un asno para montar y así poder acompañarte. Pero mi criado Siba me traicionó, 27 y ahora me ha calumniado ante mi señor el rey. Sin embargo, mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios y puedes hacer conmigo lo que mejor te parezca. 28 No hay nadie en mi familia paterna que no merezca la muerte en presencia de mi señor el rey. A pesar de eso, mi señor el rey le concedió a este tu siervo comer a la mesa real. ¿Qué derecho tengo de pedirle algo más al rey?
29 El rey le dijo:
―No tienes que dar más explicaciones. Ya he decidido que tú y Siba os repartáis las tierras.
30 ―Él puede quedarse con todo —le respondió Mefiboset—; a mí me basta con que mi señor el rey haya regresado a su palacio sano y salvo.
31 También Barzilay el galaadita bajó al Jordán. Había viajado desde Roguelín para escoltar al rey cuando cruzara el río. 32 Barzilay, que ya era un anciano de ochenta años, le había proporcionado al rey todo lo necesario durante su estancia en Majanayin, pues era muy rico. 33 El rey le dijo:
―Acompáñame. Quédate conmigo en Jerusalén, y yo me encargaré de todo lo que necesites.
34 ―Pero ¿cuántos años de vida me quedan? —respondió Barzilay—. ¿Para qué subir con el rey a Jerusalén? 35 Ya tengo ochenta años, y apenas puedo distinguir lo bueno de lo malo, o saborear lo que como y bebo, o aun apreciar las voces de los cantores y las cantoras. ¿Por qué ha de ser tu siervo una carga más para mi señor el rey? 36 ¿Y por qué quiere el rey recompensarme de este modo, cuando tan solo voy a acompañarlo a cruzar el Jordán? 37 Déjame regresar a mi propio pueblo, para que pueda morir allí y ser enterrado en la tumba de mis padres. Pero aquí te dejo a Quimán para que sirva a mi señor el rey y te acompañe a cruzar el río. Haz por él lo que harías por mí.
38 ―Está bien —respondió el rey—, Quimán irá conmigo, y haré por él lo que me pides. Y a ti te daré todo lo que quieras.
39 La gente y el rey cruzaron el Jordán. Luego el rey le dio un beso a Barzilay y lo bendijo, y Barzilay volvió a su pueblo. 40 El rey, acompañado de Quimán y escoltado por las tropas de Judá y la mitad de las tropas de Israel, siguió hasta Guilgal. 41 Por eso los israelitas fueron a ver al rey y le preguntaron:
―¿Cómo es que nuestros hermanos de Judá se han adueñado del rey al cruzar el Jordán, y lo han escoltado a él, a su familia y a todas sus tropas?
42 Los de Judá respondieron:
―¿Y a qué viene ese enojo? ¡El rey es nuestro pariente cercano! ¿Acaso hemos vivido a costa del rey? ¿Acaso nos hemos aprovechado de algo?
43 Pero los israelitas insistieron:
―¿Por qué nos tratáis con tanto desprecio? ¡Nosotros tenemos diez veces más derecho que vosotros sobre el rey David! Además, ¿no fuimos nosotros los primeros en pedirle que volviera?
Entonces los de Judá les contestaron aún con más severidad.

19 (18:33) Trembling, the king went up to the room over the gate, weeping and crying, “Oh, my son Avshalom! My son! My son Avshalom! If only I had died instead of you! Oh, Avshalom, my son, my son!”
2 (1) Yo’av was told, “The king is weeping, mourning for Avshalom.” 3 (2) Thus the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard it said that day that the king was grieving for his son; 4 (3) so that the people entered the city furtively that day, the way that people who are ashamed creep away when fleeing a battlefield. 5 (4) Meanwhile, the king covered his face and cried aloud, “Oh, my son Avshalom! Oh, Avshalom, my son, my son!”
6 (5) Yo’av went inside to the king and said, “Today you made all your servants feel ashamed. They saved your life today, and the lives of your sons, daughters, wives and concubines. 7 (6) But you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. Today you said that princes and servants mean nothing to you — for I can see today that it would have pleased you more if Avshalom had lived today, and we had all died! 8 (7) Now get up, go out and speak heart-to-heart with your servants. For I swear by Adonai that if you don’t go out, not one man will stay here with you tonight — and that will be worse for you than all the misfortunes you have suffered from your youth until now.” 9 (8) So the king got up and sat in the city gateway; and when all the people were told, “Now the king is sitting in the gate,” they came before the king.
Meanwhile, Isra’el had fled, each man to his tent; 10 (9) and throughout all the tribes of Isra’el there was dissension among all the people. They were saying, “The king delivered us from the power of our enemies, and he saved us from the power of the P’lishtim; but now he has fled the land to escape Avshalom. 11 (10) However, Avshalom, whom we anointed to rule us, is dead in battle. So now, why doesn’t anyone suggest bringing the king back?”
12 (11) King David sent this message to Tzadok and Evyatar the cohanim: “Ask the leaders of Y’hudah, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his palace? The king has already heard that all Isra’el wants to return him to his palace. 13 (12) You are my kinsmen, my flesh and bone; so why are you the last to bring back the king?’ 14 (13) Also tell ‘Amasa, ‘You are my flesh and bone. May God bring terrible curses on me and worse ones yet if from now on you are not permanent commander of my army instead of Yo’av.” 15 (14) Thus he turned the hearts of all the men of Y’hudah around as if they were one man, so that they sent a message to the king, “Come back, you and all your servants!”
16 (15) The king started back and arrived at the Yarden, while Y’hudah came to Gilgal in order to meet the king and bring the king over the Yarden. 17 (16) Shim‘i the son of Gera, the Binyamini from Bachurim, hurried and came down with the men of Y’hudah to meet King David. 18 (17) There were a thousand men of Binyamin with him, also Tziva the servant of the house of Sha’ul with his fifteen sons and twenty servants; and they rushed into the Yarden ahead of the king 19 (18) to ferry the king’s household across and do whatever else the king wanted done. Shim‘i the son of Gera fell down before the king when he was ready to cross the Yarden 20 (19) and said to the king, “May my lord not hold me guilty of a crime. Don’t remember the wrong your servant did on the day my lord the king left Yerushalayim. May the king not take it to heart! 21 (20) For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore, look — I am the first one of all the house of Yosef to come today and go down to meet my lord the king.”
22 (21) Avishai the son of Tz’ruyah answered, “Shouldn’t Shim‘i be put to death for this? After all, he cursed Adonai’s anointed ruler!” 23 (22) But David said, “What do I have in common with you, you sons of Tz’ruyah? Why have you become my adversaries today? Should anyone in Isra’el be put to death today? Don’t I know that today I am king over Isra’el?” 24 (23) Then the king said to Shim‘i, “You will not be put to death,” and the king swore it to him.
25 (24) M’fivoshet the son of Sha’ul came down to meet the king. He hadn’t cared for his legs, trimmed his beard or washed his clothes from the day the king had left until the day he came home in peace. 26 (25) When he came to Yerushalayim to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me, M’fivoshet?” 27 (26) He answered, “My lord king, my servant deceived me. I your servant had said, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself to ride on and go with the king,’ since your servant is lame. 28 (27) But he slandered me your servant to my lord the king. However, my lord the king is like an angel of God; so do whatever seems right to you. 29 (28) For all my father’s household deserved death at the hand of my lord the king; nevertheless you placed your servant with those who eat at your own table. I deserve nothing more; so why should I come crying any more to the king?” 30 (29) The king said to him, “Why speak any more about these matters of yours? I say: you and Tziva, divide the land.” 31 (30) M’fivoshet said to the king, “Indeed, let him take it all; for me it’s enough that my lord the king has come home in peace.”
32 (31) Barzillai the Gil‘adi had come down from Roglim and passed on to the Yarden with the king to bring him across the Yarden. 33 (32) Barzillai was a very old man, eighty years old; he had provided for the king’s needs when he was staying at Machanayim; for he was a wealthy man. 34 (33) The king said to Barzillai, “Come on across with me, and I will provide for your needs with me in Yerushalayim.” 35 (34) Barzillai said to the king, “How much longer can I live, that I should go up with the king to Yerushalayim? 36 (35) I am now eighty years old. Can I tell good from bad? Can your servant even taste what he eats or drinks? Can I hear the voice of men and women singing any more? Why should your servant burden my lord the king? 37 (36) Your servant only wants to cross the Yarden with the king; why should the king reward this so generously? 38 (37) Please, just let your servant go back and die in my own city, near the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Khimham; let him cross with my lord the king; and do for him whatever seems good to you.” 39 (38) The king answered, “Khimham will cross with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you. Whatever you ask of me, I will do for you.” 40 (39) So all the people crossed the Yarden; and the king crossed too. The king kissed Barzillai and blessed him; then he returned to his home. 41 (40) The king crossed over to Gilgal, and Khimham crossed with him. All the people of Y’hudah brought the king across, as did half the people of Isra’el.
42 (41) Now all the men of Isra’el came to the king and said to him, “Why have our kinsmen, the men of Y’hudah, stolen you away and brought the king and his household across the Yarden, and all David’s men with him?” 43 (42) All the men of Y’hudah answered the men of Isra’el, “Because the king is our close relative. Why are you angry about this? Have we eaten anything at the king’s expense? Has any gift been given to us?”
44 (43) The men of Isra’el answered the men of Y’hudah, “We have ten shares in the king; also we have more right in David than you. So why did you despise us? Weren’t we the first to suggest bringing our king back?” But the men of Y’hudah spoke more vehemently than the men of Isra’el.

19 [a]Joab was told, “The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.” 2 And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.” 3 The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle. 4 The king covered his face and cried aloud, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”
5 Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines. 6 You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead. 7 Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come on you from your youth till now.”(A)
8 So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, “The king is sitting in the gateway,(B)” they all came before him.
Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled to their homes.
David Returns to Jerusalem
9 Throughout the tribes of Israel, all the people were arguing among themselves, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies; he is the one who rescued us from the hand of the Philistines.(C) But now he has fled the country to escape from Absalom;(D) 10 and Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”
11 King David sent this message to Zadok(E) and Abiathar, the priests: “Ask the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has reached the king at his quarters? 12 You are my relatives, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?’ 13 And say to Amasa,(F) ‘Are you not my own flesh and blood?(G) May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(H) if you are not the commander of my army for life in place of Joab.(I)’”
14 He won over the hearts of the men of Judah so that they were all of one mind. They sent word to the king, “Return, you and all your men.” 15 Then the king returned and went as far as the Jordan.
Now the men of Judah had come to Gilgal(J) to go out and meet the king and bring him across the Jordan. 16 Shimei(K) son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David. 17 With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba,(L) the steward of Saul’s household,(M) and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan, where the king was. 18 They crossed at the ford to take the king’s household over and to do whatever he wished.
When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king 19 and said to him, “May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem.(N) May the king put it out of his mind. 20 For I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as the first from the tribes of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king.”
21 Then Abishai(O) son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed(P) the Lord’s anointed.”(Q)
22 David replied, “What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah?(R) What right do you have to interfere? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today?(S) Don’t I know that today I am king over Israel?” 23 So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king promised him on oath.(T)
24 Mephibosheth,(U) Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely. 25 When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, “Why didn’t you go with me,(V) Mephibosheth?”
26 He said, “My lord the king, since I your servant am lame,(W) I said, ‘I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the king.’ But Ziba(X) my servant betrayed me. 27 And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel(Y) of God; so do whatever you wish. 28 All my grandfather’s descendants deserved nothing but death(Z) from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who eat at your table.(AA) So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the king?”
29 The king said to him, “Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide the land.”
30 Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him take everything, now that my lord the king has returned home safely.”
31 Barzillai(AB) the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and to send him on his way from there. 32 Now Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy(AC) man. 33 The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me and stay with me in Jerusalem, and I will provide for you.”
34 But Barzillai answered the king, “How many more years will I live, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king? 35 I am now eighty(AD) years old. Can I tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of male and female singers?(AE) Why should your servant be an added(AF) burden to my lord the king? 36 Your servant will cross over the Jordan with the king for a short distance, but why should the king reward me in this way? 37 Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father(AG) and mother. But here is your servant Kimham.(AH) Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.”
38 The king said, “Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever you wish. And anything you desire from me I will do for you.”
39 So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and bid him farewell,(AI) and Barzillai returned to his home.
40 When the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel had taken the king over.
41 Soon all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him and his household across the Jordan, together with all his men?”(AJ)
42 All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about it? Have we eaten any of the king’s provisions? Have we taken anything for ourselves?”
43 Then the men of Israel(AK) answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king; so we have a greater claim on David than you have. Why then do you treat us with contempt? Weren’t we the first to speak of bringing back our king?”
But the men of Judah pressed their claims even more forcefully than the men of Israel.
