17 그후에아히도벨이압살롬에 게 말하였다. “나에게 병력 12,000명만 주십시오. 내가 오늘 밤 다 윗을 추적하러 떠나겠습니다.
2-3 그가지쳐서피곤할때내가그를 기습하면 그와 그 군대는 공포에 질려 서모두도망할것입니다. 그때나는 다윗만 죽이고 그와 함께 있는 나머지 백성들은 모두 왕에게 돌아오도록 하 겠습니다. 왕이찾는그사람만죽으 면다른사람들은자연히돌아오게되 고 모든 백성은 평안할 것입니다.”
4 이 말을 듣고 압살롬과 이스라엘의 모 든장로들은다좋게생각하였다.
후새의 조언
5 그러나압살롬은 “후새를불러라. 그 는이일을어떻게생각하는지한번 물어 보자” 하였다.
6 후새가 도착했을 때 압살롬은 그에게 아히도벨의조언을설명하며 “당신의 생각은 어떻소? 만일 아히도벨의 생각 이 틀렸다면 당신의 의견을 한번 말해 보시오” 하였다.
7 그러자 후새는 이렇게 대답하였다. “이번에는 아히도벨이 잘못 생각한 것 같습니다.
8 왕도 잘 아시겠지만 왕의 부친과 그를 따르는 자들은 다 용감한 병사들입니 다. 그들은아마새끼를빼앗긴곰처 럼대단히화가나있을것입니다. 그 리고왕의부친은전쟁경험이많은 사람이기때문에밤에는병사들가운 데서 자지 않을 것입니다.
9 아마 그는 지금쯤 굴이나 다른 어떤 곳 에숨어있을것입니다. 그가나와서 왕의군대를공격하여그중몇을쓰 러뜨리면 왕의 병사들이 당황하여 왕 의 군대가 패했다고 외칠 것입니다.
10 그렇게 되면 사자같이 용감한 병사도 무서워서 꼼짝없이 얼어붙고 말 것입 니다. 왕의부친이전쟁영웅이며그 의 병사들도 아주 용감하다는 것은 온 이스라엘 사람이 다 아는 일이기 때문 입니다.
11 내의견은이렇습니다. 왕은단에서브 엘세바까지 모든 이스라엘 사람을 모 아 막강한 군대를 조직하십시오. 그리 고왕이직접그군대를지휘하는것 이 좋을 것 같습니다.
12 그러면우리가다윗이있는곳을찾아 기습공격을하여그와그군대를한 사람도 남기지 않고 모조리 죽일 수 있을 것입니다.
13 그리고만일그가어느성으로도망가 면 모든 이스라엘 사람이 밧줄을 가져 다가 그 성을 가까운 골짜기로 끌어내 려 돌 하나 남기지 않고 그것을 무너뜨 릴수있을것입니다.”
14 그러자 압살롬과 모든 이스라엘 사람 들은 후새의 조언이 아히도벨의 조언 보다 낫다고 하였다. 이것은 여호와께 서 압살롬에게 재난을 당하게 하시려 고 아히도벨의 좋은 책략을 좌절시키 기로 작정하셨기 때문이었다.
경고를 받고 피신하는 다윗
15 그러고서후새는제사장사독과아비 아달에게 아히도벨이 말한 것과 자기 가 제안한 것을 다 말해 주고
16 그들에게이렇게말하였다. “당신들은 빨리 다윗에게 사람을 보내 오늘 밤은 요단강 나루터에서 자지 말고 강을 건 너 광야로 들어가라고 전하시오. 그렇 지 않으면 왕과 그와 함께 있는 백성이 전멸하고말것이오.”
17 한편요나단과아히마아스는사람들 의눈에뜨일까봐성에들어가지못 하고 예루살렘 변두리에 있는 엔-로 겔 샘터에 머물러 있었다. 그들은 어 떤여종을통해서전해받은전갈을 다윗에게 직접 전해 주는 임무를 맡고 있었다.
18 그러나 어느 날 한 소년이 그들을 보고 그 사실을 압살롬에게 일러바쳤다. 그 래서두사람은바후림으로도망가서 어떤 사람의 집으로 들어가 우물 속에 숨었다.
19 그러자 그 사람의 아내가 덮을 것을 가 져다가우물을덮고그위에곡식을 널어 놓았다. 그러므로 그들이 숨어 있는 것을 아는 자는 아무도 없었다.
20 압살롬의종들이그집에와서아히마 아스와 요나단을 보았느냐고 묻자 그 여자는 그들이 시내를 건너가더라고 말해주었다. 그종들은그들을찾다 가 찾지 못하고 결국 예루살렘으로 돌 아가고 말았다.
21 그들이 떠난 후에 두 사람은 우물에서 올라와 다윗에게 급히 달려가서 “오늘 밤서둘러서요단강을건너가십시오. 아히도벨이 왕을 잡아죽일 계획을 세 워 놓았습니다” 하고 일러 주었다.
22 그래서 그들은 요단강을 건너갔으며 새벽까지 강을 건너지 못한 사람은 아 무도 없었다.
23 한편 아히도벨은 자기 제안이 좌절된 것을 보고 나귀에 안장을 지워 고향으 로 돌아가 집을 정리하고 목매달아 자 살하였다. 그래서 그는 자기 아버지의 묘실에 장사되었다.
24 다윗은 곧 마하나임에 도착하였고 압 살롬은 이스라엘의 전 군대를 이끌고 요단강을 건넜다.
25 압살롬은 요압 대신 아마사를 이스라 엘군 총사령관으로 임명했는데 그의 아버지는 이스마엘 사람 이드라였고 그의 어머니는 나하스의 딸이며 요압 의 어머니인 스루야의 동생 아비가일 이었다.
26 압살롬과그의군대는길르앗땅에진 쳤다.
27 다윗이 마하나임에 도착했을 때 암몬 의 랍바성에 사는 나하스의 아들 소비 와 로-데발 사람 암미엘의 아들인 마 길과 로글림에 사는 길르앗 사람 바실 래가
28-29 침구와취사도구, 밀, 보리, 밀가 루, 볶은 곡식, 콩, 팥, 꿀, 버터, 양, 치즈 를 가져와 다윗과 그와 함께 한 백성에 게주었다. 그들은다윗과그일행이 광야를 걸어오는 동안 몹시 지치고 피 곤하며 목마르고 배고플 것이라고 생 각했던것이다.

17 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would[a] choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak.(A) I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king(B) 3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai(C) the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs.(D) Besides, your father is an experienced fighter;(E) he will not spend the night with the troops. 9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place.(F) If he should attack your troops first,[b] whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion,(G) will melt(H) with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.(I)
11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba(J)—as numerous as the sand(K) on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley(L) until not so much as a pebble is left.”
14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice(M) of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.”(N) For the Lord had determined to frustrate(O) the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster(P) on Absalom.(Q)
15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness;(R) cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.(S)’”
17 Jonathan(T) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.(U) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim.(V) He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.(W)
20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman(X) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”[c] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice(Y) had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order(Z) and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
Absalom’s Death
24 David went to Mahanaim,(AA) and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had appointed Amasa(AB) over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,[d](AC) an Ishmaelite[e] who had married Abigail,[f] the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash(AD) from Rabbah(AE) of the Ammonites, and Makir(AF) son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai(AG) the Gileadite(AH) from Rogelim 28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.(AI) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.(AJ)”

17 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:
2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:
3 And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.
6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.
7 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.
8 For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.
9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.
10 And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.
11 Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.
12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
13 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.
14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the Lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.
15 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.
16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man's house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down.
19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known.
20 And when Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.
22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.
23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.
24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25 And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother.
26 So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.
27 And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,
28 Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse,
29 And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

Hushai Saves David
17 Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is (A)weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. (B)I will strike down only the king, 3 and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,[a] and all the people will be at peace.” 4 And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.
5 Then Absalom said, “Call (C)Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.” 6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.” 7 Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.” 8 Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged,[b] (D)like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people. 9 Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. 17 И сказал Ахитофел Авессалому: выберу я двенадцать тысяч человек и встану и пойду в погоню за Давидом в эту ночь;
2 и нападу на него, когда он будет утомлен и с опущенными руками, и приведу его в страх; и все люди, которые с ним, разбегутся; и я убью одного царя
3 и всех людей обращу к тебе; и когда не будет одного, душу которого ты ищешь, тогда весь народ будет в мире.
4 И понравилось это слово Авессалому и всем старейшинам Израилевым.
5 И сказал Авессалом: позовите Хусия Архитянина; послушаем, что он скажет.
6 И пришел Хусий к Авессалому, и сказал ему Авессалом, говоря: вот что говорит Ахитофел; сделать ли по его словам? а если нет, то говори ты.
7 И сказал Хусий Авессалому: нехорош на этот раз совет, который дал Ахитофел.
8 И продолжал Хусий: ты знаешь твоего отца и людей его; они храбры и сильно раздражены, как медведица в поле, у которой отняли детей, и отец твой--человек воинственный; он не остановится ночевать с народом.
9 Вот, теперь он скрывается в какой-нибудь пещере, или в другом месте, и если кто падет при первом нападении на них, и услышат и скажут: 'было поражение людей, последовавших за Авессаломом',
10 тогда и самый храбрый, у которого сердце, как сердце львиное, упадет духом; ибо всему Израилю известно, как храбр отец твой и мужественны те, которые с ним.
11 Посему я советую: пусть соберется к тебе весь Израиль, от Дана до Вирсавии, во множестве, как песок при море, и ты сам пойдешь посреди его;
12 и тогда мы пойдем против него, в каком бы месте он ни находился, и нападем на него, как падает роса на землю; и не останется у него ни одного человека из всех, которые с ним;
13 а если он войдет в какой-либо город, то весь Израиль принесет к тому городу веревки, и мы стащим его в реку, так что не останется ни одного камешка.
14 И сказал Авессалом и весь Израиль: совет Хусия Архитянина лучше совета Ахитофелова. Так Господь судил разрушить лучший совет Ахитофела, чтобы навести Господу бедствие на Авессалома.
15 И сказал Хусий Садоку и Авиафару священникам: так и так советовал Ахитофел Авессалому и старейшинам Израилевым, а так и так посоветовал я.

21 Когда они ушли, те вышли из колодезя, пошли и известили царя Давида и сказали Давиду: встаньте и поскорее перейдите воду; ибо так и так советовал о вас Ахитофел.
22 И встал Давид и все люди, бывшие с ним, и перешли Иордан; к рассвету не осталось ни одного, который не перешел бы Иордана.
23 И увидел Ахитофел, что не исполнен совет его, и оседлал осла, и собрался, и пошел в дом свой, в город свой, и сделал завещание дому своему, и удавился, и умер, и был погребен в гробе отца своего.
24 И пришел Давид в Маханаим, а Авессалом перешел Иордан, сам и весь Израиль с ним.
25 Авессалом поставил Амессая, вместо Иоава, над войском. Амессай был сын одного человека, по имени Иефера из Изрееля, который вошел к Авигее, дочери Нааса, сестре Саруи, матери Иоава.
26 И Израиль с Авессаломом расположился станом в земле Галаадской.
