압살롬의 음모
15 그 뒤에 압살롬은 자기가 탈 전차와 말들을 마련하고, 호위병도 오십 명이나 거느려 자기를 앞서 달리게 하였다. 2 압살롬은 아침 일찍 일어나 성문으로 이르는 길 가에 서 있곤 하였다. 누구든지 왕에게 나아가 다툼에 대해 판정을 내려 달라고 찾아가려는 사람이 있으면, 압살롬은 그 사람에게 “어느 성읍에서 오셨소?”라고 소리쳤다. 그러면 그 사람이 “이 종은 이스라엘의 아무 가문 출신입니다.”라고 대답하였다. 3 그러면 압살롬은 그 사람에게 “보시오. 당신의 주장이 정당하지만 왕을 대신하여 당신의 말을 들어 줄 사람이 없소.”라고 말하였다. 4 그런 다음 압살롬은 이렇게 덧붙였다. “내가 이 나라의 재판관이라면 얼마나 좋을까! 그러면 불평할 일이나 소송사건이 있는 사람이 모두 나를 찾아올 수 있을 것이고, 나는 그 사람이 정당한 판결을 받도록 해 줄 수 있을 터인데!”
5 또 어떤 사람이 그에게 다가와 절이라도 하면 압살롬은 손을 내밀어 그를 일으켜 세우고 입을 맞추었다. 6 압살롬은 재판을 받으려고 왕을 찾아오는 모든 이스라엘 사람에게 이같이 하여 이스라엘 사람들의 마음을 샀다.
7 이렇게 네 해[a]가 지난 다음 압살롬이 왕에게 말하였다. “주께 서원한 것을 지켜야겠으니 저를 헤브론으로 가게 허락하여 주십시오. 8 제가 아람의 그술에 살고 있을 때 이런 서원을 하였습니다. ‘주께서 저를 예루살렘으로 돌려보내 주시면 헤브론에서[b] 주께 예배드리겠습니다.’”
9 왕이 그에게 “평안히 다녀오너라.” 하고 말하였다. 그리하여 압살롬이 헤브론으로 갔다.
10 그러나 압살롬은 온 이스라엘 가문에 몰래 전령들을 보내어 이렇게 전하였다. “나팔 소리를 듣는 대로 ‘압살롬이 헤브론에서 왕이 되었다!’ 라고 외치시오.”
11 예루살렘에서 이백 명의 사람이 압살롬과 함께 내려갔다. 그들은 압살롬에게서 손님으로 같이 가자는 초대를 받았을 뿐 그의 계획에 관해서는 아무것도 알지 못하였다. 12 또한 압살롬은 희생제물을 드리는 동안 사람을 보내 아히도벨을 초청하였다. 그는 길로 사람으로 다윗 왕의 고문이었다. 이렇게 하여 반란 세력이 커지고 압살롬을 따르는 사람의 수도 점점 늘었다.
다윗이 도망하다
13 전령 하나가 다윗에게 와서 말하였다. “이스라엘 사람들의 마음이 압살롬에게 기울어졌습니다.”
14 그러자 다윗은 예루살렘에 함께 있던 모든 신하에게 말하였다. “서둘러 우리 모두 도망가자. 그러지 않으면 아무도 압살롬을 피할 수 없을 것이다. 우리가 즉시 떠나지 않으면 그가 금세 우리를 따라잡아 우리를 죽이고 이 도성도 칼로 칠 것이다.”
15 왕의 신하들이 대답하였다. “종들은 임금님께서 하시고자 하는 대로 따르겠습니다.”
16 왕은 온 왕실을 거느리고 예루살렘을 떠났다. 그러나 왕궁을 지킬 후궁[c] 열 명은 남겨 놓았다. 17 왕은 백성과 함께 떠나 얼마쯤 가서 한 곳에 이르러 걸음을 멈추었다. 18 왕의 모든 신하가 왕 앞을 행군하여 지나갔다. 그렛 외인부대와 블렛 외인부대도 행군하여 지나갔다. 그리고 가드에서 그를 따라 온 가드 군인 육백 명도 왕 앞을 행군하여 지나갔다.
19 왕이 가드 외인부대의 지휘관인 잇대에게 말하였다. “어찌하여 장군까지 우리와 함께 가려 하오? 돌아가 압살롬 왕과 함께 지내도록 하시오. 그대는 외국인이고 고국을 떠나온 망명객이 아니오? 20 장군이 온 것이 바로 엊그제요. 그런데 오늘 장군더러 우리와 함께 떠돌아다니자고 할 수 있겠소? 나는 어디로 가야 할지도 모르는 신세가 되었소. 그러니 어서 동족을 데리고 돌아가시오. 주의 은혜와 신실하심이 그대와 함께하시기를 바라오.”
21 그러나 잇대가 왕에게 이렇게 대답하였다. “주께서 살아 계심과 임금님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 임금님께서 계시는 곳이면 그곳이 죽을 자리든 살 자리든 이 종은 그곳에 있겠습니다.”
22 다윗이 잇대에게 말하였다. “앞서 가시오. 계속 행군하시오.”
가드 사람 잇대는 그의 부하들과 그를 따라온 가족들을 모두 데리고 계속하여 행군하였다. 23 이 모든 사람이 지나갈 때에 그 지역 사람들이 모두 소리 높여 울었다. 왕도 기드론 시내를 건너가니 모든 사람이 광야 쪽으로 나아갔다. 24 제사장 사독도 거기에 있었고, 그와 함께 온 모든 레위 가문 사람들은 하나님의 궤를 메고 있었다. 그들이 그 궤를 내려놓자 아비아달은 모든 사람이 예루살렘을 떠날 때까지 기도를 드렸다[d].
25 왕이 사독에게 말하였다. “하나님의 계약궤를 다시 예루살렘으로 가져가시오. 만일 주께서 나를 좋게 보아 주시면, 주께서 나를 되돌아오게 하셔서, 하나님의 궤와 하나님께서 계신 곳을 다시 보게 하실 것이오. 26 그러나 만일 주께서 ‘나는 네가 마음에 들지 않는다.’라고 말씀하시면 나로서는 어쩔 수 없는 일이오. 나는 하나님께서 좋게 여기시는 대로 나에게 해 주시기를 바랄 뿐이오.”
27 왕이 또 제사장 사독에게 말하였다. “그대는 선견자가 아니오? 성으로 평안히 돌아가시오. 그대의 아들 아히마아스와 아비아달의 아들 요나단을 데리고 가시오. 그대와 아비아달은 그대들의 두 아들을 데리고 가시오. 28 나는 그대가 소식을 보내 올 때까지 광야 나루터에서 기다리겠소.”
29 그리하여 사독과 아비아달은 하나님의 궤를 다시 예루살렘으로 모시고 가서 그곳에 머물렀다.
다윗의 기도
30 다윗은 올리브 산으로 올라갔다. 그는 가면서 계속하여 울고 머리를 가리고 맨발로 올라갔다. 그와 함께 가는 사람들도 머리를 가리고 울면서 산으로 올라갔다.
31 그런데 다윗은 “압살롬과 함께 반란을 계획한 자들 가운데 아히도벨도 끼어 있습니다.”라는 말을 듣고 이렇게 기도하였다. “오, 주님. 아히도벨의 꾀가 어리석은 것이 되게 하여 주십시오.”
32 다윗이 산꼭대기에 이르렀다. 그곳은 백성이 하나님께 예배드리던 곳이다. 그때에 그곳에서 아렉 사람 후새가 다윗을 맞이하였다. 그는 겉옷을 찢고 머리에 흙을 뒤집어쓰고[e] 있었다. 33 다윗이 후새에게 말하였다. “그대가 나와 함께 가면 나에게 짐만 될 뿐이오. 34 그러니 도성으로 돌아가서 압살롬에게 이렇게 말하시오. ‘오, 임금님, 내가 임금님의 종이 되겠습니다. 내가 전에는 부왕의 종이었으나 이제부터는 임금님의 종이 되겠습니다.’ 그런 다음 아히도벨의 충고를 꺾어 주면 그것이 오히려 내게 도움이 될 것이오. 35 사독과 아비아달 두 제사장이 그대와 함께 그곳에 갈 것이오. 왕궁에서 들은 모든 것을 그들에게 알려 주시오. 36 사독의 아들 아히마아스와 아비아달의 아들 요나단이 그들과 함께 있으니, 그대가 들은 말은 무엇이든지 그들을 통해 나에게 알려 주시오.”
37 그리하여 다윗의 친구인 후새가 예루살렘으로 돌아갔다. 때마침 압살롬도 예루살렘으로 들어왔다.

15 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.
9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.
10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.
11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
37 So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
