암논과 다말
13 다윗의 아들 암논이 다말을 사랑하게 되었다. 다말은 다윗의 다른 아들 압살롬의 친누이로 매우 아름다웠다. 2 암논은 자기의 이복동생 다말 때문에 병이 날 지경이었다. 다말은 처녀였고 그로서는 다말을 어떻게도 할 수 없을 것처럼 보였기 때문이다.
3 그런데 암논에게는 요나답이라는 친구가 있었는데, 그는 다윗의 형 시므아의 아들이었다. 요나답은 아주 교활한 인물이었다. 4 요나답이 암논에게 말하였다. “어찌하여 왕자님의 얼굴이 나날이 수척해 보이시는지요? 저에게 그 까닭을 말씀해 주시지 않겠습니까?”
암논이 요나답에게 말하였다. “내가 아우 압살롬의 누이인 다말을 사랑하고 있다네.”
5 요나답이 암논에게 말하였다. “침대에 가서 아픈 체하고 누워 계십시오. 왕자님의 부친께서 문병하러 오실 때에 이렇게 말씀드리십시오. ‘누이 다말이 와서 저에게 먹을 것을 장만해 주었으면 좋겠습니다. 제 앞에서 다말이 음식을 만들면, 제가 다말을 보고 있다가, 다말이 손으로 먹여 주는 음식을 먹고 싶습니다.’”
6 그리하여 암논이 자리에 누워 아픈 체하였다. 왕이 그를 문병하러 오니 암논이 왕에게 말하였다. “누이 다말이 와서 내가 보는 데서 특별한 빵을 구워 주면 좋겠습니다. 그러면 제가 다말의 손에서 그것을 받아먹겠습니다.”
7 다윗은 다말의 집으로 사람을 보내어 이렇게 일렀다. “네 오라비 암논의 집에 가서 그를 위해 음식을 장만해 주어라.”
8 그리하여 다말이 자기의 오라비 암논의 집으로 가 보니 그가 자리에 누워 있었다. 다말은 암논이 보는 앞에서 밀가루를 반죽하여 빵을 빚은 다음 그것을 구웠다. 9 그리고 빵을 넣어 구운 냄비를 가지고 와서 암논에게 빵을 주었으나 암논은 먹으려 하지 않았다.
그가 “모든 사람을 여기서 내보내라.” 하고 말하니 모든 사람이 나갔다. 10 그런 다음 암논이 다말에게 말하였다. “그 음식을 여기 내 침실로 가지고 들어와서 네 손으로 먹여 다오.” 그리하여 다말은 자기가 만든 빵을 들고 오라비 암논의 방으로 들어갔다. 11 다말이 암논에게 빵을 먹여 주려 하자 암논은 다말을 끌어안고 “누이야, 나와 같이 자자.” 하고 말하였다.
12 “안됩니다, 오라버니!” 다말이 암논에게 말하였다. “저에게 억지로 이러지 마세요. 이스라엘에서는 이런 짓을 하지 않습니다. 이런 악한 짓을 하지 마세요. 13 저는 어떻게 되겠어요? 이런 수치를 당하고 어디로 갈 수 있겠어요? 그리고 오라버니는 어떻게 되겠어요? 이스라엘에서 불량배 가운데 하나로 취급당하실 거예요. 제발 임금님께 말씀드려 보세요. 그러면 저와 결혼하는 것을 막지 않으실 거예요.” 14 그러나 암논은 다말의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 그가 다말보다 힘이 세었으므로 그는 다말을 겁탈하였다.
15 그러고 나자 암논은 다말이 몹시 미워졌다. 실은 그 여자를 사랑했던 것보다 훨씬 더 미워하였다. 그는 다말에게 “일어나서 당장 꺼져 버려라!” 하고 소리쳤다.
16 다말이 암논에게 말하였다. “안됩니다! 이렇게 나를 내쫓으시는 것은 방금 나에게 저지른 일보다 더 악한 일입니다.”
그러나 암논은 다말의 말을 듣지 않고 17 자기의 몸종을 불러 말하였다. “이 여자를 여기서 끌어내고 대문에 빗장을 질러라.”
18 그리하여 그의 종이 다말을 내보낸 다음 대문에 빗장을 질렀다. 그때 다말은 긴 소매가 달린 겉옷을 입고 있었다. 그것은 시집가지 않은 공주들이 입는 옷이었다. 19 다말은 머리에 재를 뒤집어쓰고 화려하게 장식한 긴 겉옷을 찢었다. 그리고 손으로 머리를 움켜쥐고 목 놓아 울며 갔다.
20 그의 오라비 압살롬이 다말에게 물었다. “네 오라비 암논이 너와 함께 있었느냐? 누이야, 지금은 가만히 있어라. 그는 네 오라비다. 이 일로 너무 마음 쓸 것 없다.” 다말은 자기의 오라비 압살롬의 집에서 쓸쓸히 지냈다.
21 다윗 왕은 이 이야기를 모두 듣고서 크게 화를 내었다. 그러나 그는 맏아들 암논을 사랑하였기 때문에 그들의 비위를 건드릴 말은 한 마디도 하지 않았다.[a] 22 압살롬은 암논이 자기 누이동생 다말을 욕보인 일로 그를 미워하였다. 그러나 그는 입을 꾹 다물고 좋은 말도 나쁜 말도 하지 않았다.
압살롬의 복수
23 그로부터 두 해가 지났다. 압살롬의 양털 깎는 사람들이 에브라임 가까이에 있는 바알하솔에서 양털을 깎고 있을 때, 그는 왕자들을 모두 그곳으로 초대하였다. 24 압살롬이 왕에게 가서 말씀드렸다. “제가 양털 깎는 사람들을 불렀습니다. 부디 임금님께서 신하들과 함께 오시기 바랍니다.”
25 다윗 왕이 압살롬에게 대답하였다. “아니다, 아들아. 우리가 다 가게 되면 너에게 짐이 될 뿐이니 가지 않겠다.”
압살롬이 그에게 간청하였으나 다윗은 가려 하지 않았다. 그는 다만 그에게 복을 빌어 주었다.
26 그러자 압살롬이 말하였다. “정 그러시면 암논 형님만이라도 저와 함께 가도록 허락해 주십시오.”
다윗 왕이 압살롬에게 물었다. “무엇 때문에 암논이 너와 함께 가야 하느냐?”
27 압살롬이 끈질기게 청하자 다윗은 암논과 다른 왕자들을 모두 압살롬과 함께 가게 하였다.
28 압살롬은 자기 부하들에게 명령을 내렸다. “내 말을 잘 들어라. 암논이 술에 취해 기분이 좋아지면 내가 ‘암논을 쳐라.’라고 말하겠다. 그때 너희는 암논을 죽여라. 두려워하지 말아라. 명령을 내린 사람이 내가 아니냐? 자, 힘을 내고 용기를 가져라.” 29 그리하여 압살롬의 부하들은 그가 명령한 대로 암논을 죽였다. 그러자 다른 왕자들이 모두 일어나 각기 노새를 타고 달아났다.
30 왕자들이 아직 돌아오고 있는 가운데 “압살롬이 왕자들을 모두 죽였습니다. 단 한 사람도 살아남지 못하였습니다.”라는 보고가 다윗에게 전해졌다. 31 왕은 일어나 옷을 찢고 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다. 신하들도 모두 옷을 찢고 그 곁에 섰다.
32 그때 다윗의 형 시므아의 아들 요나답이 말하였다. “임금님, 그들이 왕자들을 다 죽였다고 생각하지 마십시오. 오직 암논 왕자만 죽었습니다. 압살롬은 암논이 자기 누이 다말을 겁탈한 날부터 이렇게 하겠다고 말해 왔습니다. 33 임금님께서는 왕자들이 모두 죽었다는 보고에 마음 쓰지 마십시오. 암논 왕자만 죽었습니다.”
34 그러는 사이 압살롬은 도망쳐 버렸다.
그때 보초를 서고 있던 사람이 호로나임 쪽에서 많은 사람이 언덕을 타고 내려오는 것을 보았다. 그는 왕에게 가서 보고하였다. “호로나임 쪽에서 많은 사람이 언덕을 타고 내려오는 것을 보았습니다.” 35 그러자 요나답이 왕에게 말하였다. “보십시오. 왕자님들이 돌아오셨습니다. 제가 말씀드린 대로 되지 않았습니까!”
36 요나답의 말이 끝나자마자 왕자들이 목 놓아 울면서 들어섰다. 왕도 신하들도 모두 슬픔에 젖어 소리 높여 울었다. 37 다윗은 아들 암논 때문에 슬픈 나날을 보냈다.
압살롬은 달아나 그술 왕 암미훌의 아들 달매[b]에게 갔다. 38 압살롬이 그술로 달아나 거기에서 세 해를 머물렀다. 39 이제 암논이 죽었을 때 왕이 받은 마음의 상처도 아물었다. 그는 속으로 압살롬을 그리워하였다.

암논과 다말
13 다윗의아들압살롬에게다말 이라는 아름다운 여동생이 하 나 있었는데 그녀의 이복 오빠 암논이 그녀를 대단히 연모하고 있었다.
2 그러나 암논은 다말이 정숙한 처녀였 기때문에쉽게접근할수가없어서 그녀를 몹시 사랑하면서도 어떻게 할 수가없었다. 그래서결국그는다말 을 사모하다가 병이 들고 말았다.
3 그런데 암논에게는 대단히 간교한 친 구하나가있었다. 그는다윗의형시 므아의아들인요나답이라는자였다.
4 하루는 요나답이 암논에게 물었다. “왕자인 너는 무엇 때문에 그처럼 날 마다 수심에 잠겨 있느냐?” “내 이복 누이동생 다말에 대한 애정 때문일 세.”
5 “그렇다면 좋은 수가 있다. 내가 시키 는대로하여라. 침대에누워병든척 하고있다가너의부친이너를보러 오거든 네 누이동생 다말을 보내 네가 보는 앞에서 음식을 만들게 해 달라고 부탁하고너를위해만든그음식을 다말이직접손으로먹여주면좀나 을 것 같다고 하여라.”
6 그래서 암논은 요나답이 시킨 대로 침 대에 누워 병든 척하고 있다가 자기 아 버지가 그를 보러 왔을 때 이렇게 말하 였다. “동생 다말을 보내 내가 보는 앞 에서직접음식을만들어나에게먹여 주라고하십시오.”
7 그래서 다윗은 다말에게 사람을 보내 암논의집에가서그를위해음식을 만들어 주라고 지시하였다.
8 다말이 자기 오빠 암논의 집에 갔을 때 암논은 침대에 누워 있었다. 다말은 밀가루를 가져다가 반죽하여 자기 오 빠가보는데서과자를만들어구웠 다.
9 그러나 다말이 과자 그릇을 암논 앞에 갖다 놓아도 그는 먹을 생각을 하지 않 고 모든 사람을 밖으로 나가게 하라고 소리를 질렀다. 그래서 하인들은 모두 밖으로나갔다.
10 그때 암논이 다말에게 “자, 이제 그 음 식을 가지고 침실로 들어와서 네가 직 접 먹여라” 하였다. 그래서 다말은 과 자그릇을들고그의침실로들어갔 다.
11 그러나다말이음식을먹이려고암논 에게가까이갔을때그는다말을붙 들고자기자리에들것을강요하였 다.
12 그러자 다말이 거절하며 말하였다. “오빠, 이게 무슨 짓이에요? 제발 이러 지 마세요. 이런 일은 이스라엘에서 있을 수 없는 일이에요.
13 내가 수치를 당한다면 어떻게 머리를 들고다닐수있겠어요? 이러시면오 빠도 이스라엘에서 가장 어리석은 사 람이될거예요. 나를그렇게도사랑 하신다면 아버지께 말씀드리세요. 아 버지께서도 내가 오빠와 결혼하는 것 을 말리지 않으실 거예요.”
14 그러나암논은그녀의말을듣지않고 다말보다 힘이 세므로 그녀를 덮쳐 강 간하고 말았다.
15 그런다음에는다말에대한그의사랑 이 증오로 돌변하여 암논은 다말을 사 랑할 때의 그 사랑보다 더한 증오심으 로 그녀를 미워하여 “여기서 썩 나가!” 하고 소리쳤다.
16 그러자 다말이 “이러시면 안 돼요. 이 렇게 하고서 나를 쫓아보내는 것은 나 를욕보인것보다더큰죄란말이에 요” 하고 대꾸했으나 그는 듣지 않았 다.
17-18 암논은 자기 하인을 불러 “이 계집 을밖으로끌어내고문을걸어잠가 라” 하고 명령하였다. 그래서 그는 다 말을끌어내고문을걸어잠갔다. 이 때 다말은 시집가지 않은 공주가 보통 입는소매달린긴옷을입고있었는 데
19 그녀는이옷을찢고머리에재를뒤집 어쓰고 손으로 얼굴을 가린 채 울면서 집으로 갔다.
20 그러자 그녀의 오빠 압살롬이 그녀에 게 “너를 욕보인 자가 암논이냐? 이 일 로 너무 상심하지 말아라. 어쨌든 [a]이 것은 집안 일이니 당분간 아무에게도 말하지 말고 조용히 있거라” 하고 그 녀를달랬다. 그래서다말은자기오 빠 압살롬의 집에서 처량하게 지냈다.
21 다윗왕은 이 일을 듣고 노발 대발하였 다.
22 그리고 압살롬은 암논이 자기 동생 다 말을욕보인일로그를미워하여그와 일체 말을 하지 않았다.
압살롬이 암논을 살해함
23 그로부터 2년 후에 압살롬은 에브라 임부근의바알-하솔에서자기양털 을깎을때잔치를베풀어모든왕자 들을 초청하고
24 또왕에게도가서 “아버지, 저의집에 양털 깎는 일이 있어서 잔치를 베풀었 는데 신하들을 데리고 저와 함께 가십 시다” 하고 권하였다.
25 그러자 왕은 “아니다, 내 아들아. 만일 우리가모두다가게되면너에게너 무큰부담이될것이다” 하고대답하 였다. 압살롬은 왕을 강권했으나 왕은 가지 않고 그에게 복을 빌어 주었다.
26 그때압살롬이 “그러시다면내형암 논이라도 우리와 함께 가게 해 주십시 오” 하자 왕은 “암논이 너와 함께 가야 할 이유가 무엇이냐?” 하고 물었다.
27 그러나 압살롬이 계속 간청하므로 왕 은암논과다른모든왕자들을그와 함께 보냈다.
28 압살롬은 큰 잔치를 베풀고 그의 하인 들에게말하였다. “너희는암논이취 할 때까지 기다렸다가 내가 신호를 하 면그를죽여라! 너희는두려워할것 없다. 이명령을내리는자가내가아 니냐? 용기를 내어 대담하게 해치워 라.”
29 그래서 그들은 압살롬의 지시대로 암 논을 죽였다. 그러자 다른 왕자들은 급히 그 자리에서 일어나 노새를 타고 도망쳤다.
30 그들이예루살렘으로돌아오는도중 에 압살롬이 모든 왕자들을 죽이고 하 나도 남기지 않았다는 소문이 다윗의 귀에 들어갔다.
31 그러자왕은벌떡일어서서자기옷을 찢고 땅에 엎드렸으며 그의 신하들도 다 옷을 찢고 그의 곁에 서 있었다.
32-33 그러나바로그때다윗의형시므 아의 아들인 요나답이 왕에게 와서 이 렇게 말하였다. “왕자들이 다 죽은 것 이아닙니다! 오직암논만죽었을뿐 입니다. 압살롬은 암논이 다말을 욕보 인 후부터 그를 죽이기로 작정한 것이 분명합니다. 그러니 너무 상심하지 마 십시오. 왕자들이다죽은것이아니 라 암논만 죽었습니다.”
34 이런일이있은후에압살롬은도망치 고 말았다. 예루살렘 파수꾼이 바라보 니 뒷산 언덕길로 여러 사람이 떼를 지 어달려오고있었다. 그래서그가그 사실을왕에게보고하자
35 요나답이 “보십시오! 제가말한대로 저기 왕자들이 오고 있지 않습니까!” 하고 소리쳤다.
36 그가말을마치자왕자들이곧도착하 여 대성 통곡하므로 왕과 그의 신하들 도 소리 높여 슬피 울었다.
37 압살롬은암미훗의아들인그술왕달 매에게로 갔고 한편 다윗은 그의 아들 암논 때문에 슬픈 나날을 보내고 있었 다.
38 그러나 압살롬이 도망하여 그술에 있 은 지 3년이 되자
39 다윗왕은 죽은 아들에 대한 슬픔을 거 의잊고이제는그마음이압살롬을 향하여 그리워하고 있었다.

Amnon and Tamar
13 In the course of time, Amnon(A) son of David fell in love with Tamar,(B) the beautiful sister of Absalom(C) son of David.
2 Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.
3 Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah,(D) David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man. 4 He asked Amnon, “Why do you, the king’s son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?”
Amnon said to him, “I’m in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
5 “Go to bed and pretend to be ill,” Jonadab said. “When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand.’”
6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to him, “I would like my sister Tamar to come and make some special bread in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.”
7 David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare some food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the bread in his sight and baked it. 9 Then she took the pan and served him the bread, but he refused to eat.
“Send everyone out of here,”(E) Amnon said. So everyone left him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. 11 But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed(F) her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.”(G)
12 “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel!(H) Don’t do this wicked thing.(I) 13 What about me?(J) Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.” 14 But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her.(K)
15 Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”
16 “No!” she said to him. “Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me.”
But he refused to listen to her. 17 He called his personal servant and said, “Get this woman out of my sight and bolt the door after her.” 18 So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. She was wearing an ornate[a] robe,(L) for this was the kind of garment the virgin daughters of the king wore. 19 Tamar put ashes(M) on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went.
20 Her brother Absalom said to her, “Has that Amnon, your brother, been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister; he is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.” And Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s house, a desolate woman.
21 When King David heard all this, he was furious.(N) 22 And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad;(O) he hated(P) Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.
Absalom Kills Amnon
23 Two years later, when Absalom’s sheepshearers(Q) were at Baal Hazor near the border of Ephraim, he invited all the king’s sons to come there. 24 Absalom went to the king and said, “Your servant has had shearers come. Will the king and his attendants please join me?”
25 “No, my son,” the king replied. “All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.” Although Absalom urged him, he still refused to go but gave him his blessing.
26 Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.”
The king asked him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons.
28 Absalom(R) ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high(S) spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.(T)” 29 So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled.
30 While they were on their way, the report came to David: “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons; not one of them is left.” 31 The king stood up, tore(U) his clothes and lay down on the ground; and all his attendants stood by with their clothes torn.
32 But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “My lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar. 33 My lord the king should not be concerned about the report that all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
34 Meanwhile, Absalom had fled.
Now the man standing watch looked up and saw many people on the road west of him, coming down the side of the hill. The watchman went and told the king, “I see men in the direction of Horonaim, on the side of the hill.”[b]
35 Jonadab said to the king, “See, the king’s sons have come; it has happened just as your servant said.”
36 As he finished speaking, the king’s sons came in, wailing loudly. The king, too, and all his attendants wept very bitterly.
37 Absalom fled and went to Talmai(V) son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But King David mourned many days for his son.
38 After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years. 39 And King David longed to go to Absalom,(W) for he was consoled(X) concerning Amnon’s death.

13 After this (A)Absalom the son of David had a lovely sister, whose name was (B)Tamar; and (C)Amnon the son of David loved her. 2 Amnon was so distressed over his sister Tamar that he became sick; for she was a virgin. And it was improper for Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab (D)the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Now Jonadab was a very crafty man. 4 And he said to him, “Why are you, the king’s son, becoming thinner day after day? Will you not tell me?”
Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
5 So Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me food, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’ ” 6 Then Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let Tamar my sister come and (E)make a couple of cakes for me in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
7 And David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Now go to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was lying down. Then she took flour and kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and placed them out before him, but he refused to eat. Then Amnon said, (F)“Have everyone go out from me.” And they all went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to Amnon her brother in the bedroom. 11 Now when she had brought them to him to eat, (G)he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
12 But she answered him, “No, my brother, do not [a]force me, for (H)no such thing should be done in Israel. Do not do this (I)disgraceful thing! 13 And I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; (J)for he will not withhold me from you.” 14 However, he would not heed her voice; and being stronger than she, he (K)forced her and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her [b]exceedingly, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone!”
16 So she said to him, “No, indeed! This evil of sending me away is worse than the other that you did to me.”
But he would not listen to her. 17 Then he called his servant who attended him, and said, “Here! Put this woman out, away from me, and bolt the door behind her.” 18 Now she had on (L)a robe of many colors, for the king’s virgin daughters wore such apparel. And his servant put her out and bolted the door behind her.
19 Then Tamar put (M)ashes on her head, and tore her robe of many colors that was on her, and (N)laid her hand on her head and went away crying bitterly. 20 And Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.
21 But when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. 22 And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon (O)neither good nor bad. For Absalom (P)hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
Absalom Murders Amnon
23 And it came to pass, after two full years, that Absalom (Q)had sheepshearers in Baal Hazor, which is near Ephraim; so Absalom invited all the king’s sons. 24 Then Absalom came to the king and said, “Kindly note, your servant has sheepshearers; please, let the king and his servants go with your servant.”
25 But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go now, lest we be a burden to you.” Then he urged him, but he would not go; and he blessed him.
26 Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.”
And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 But Absalom urged him; so he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.
28 Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, “Watch now, when Amnon’s (R)heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon!’ then kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and [c]valiant.” 29 So the servants of Absalom (S)did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each one got on (T)his mule and fled.
30 And it came to pass, while they were on the way, that news came to David, saying, “Absalom has killed all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left!” 31 So the king arose and (U)tore his garments and (V)lay on the ground, and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. 32 Then (W)Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, answered and said, “Let not my lord suppose they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for only Amnon is dead. For by the command of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar. 33 Now therefore, (X)let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead. For only Amnon is dead.”
Absalom Flees to Geshur
34 (Y)Then Absalom fled. And the young man who was keeping watch lifted his eyes and looked, and there, many people were coming from the road on the hillside behind [d]him. 35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Look, the king’s sons are coming; as your servant said, so it is.” 36 So it was, as soon as he had finished speaking, that the king’s sons indeed came, and they lifted up their voice and wept. Also the king and all his servants wept very bitterly.
37 But Absalom fled and went to (Z)Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. 38 So Absalom fled and went to (AA)Geshur, and was there three years. 39 And [e]King David [f]longed to go to Absalom. For he had been (AB)comforted concerning Amnon, because he was dead.
