압살롬의 반역
15 그후에압살롬은전차한대와 말들을 구하고 호위병 50명도 고용하였다.
2 그는 매일 아침 일찍 일어나 성문으로 나가곤 했는데 그는 성문 길가에 서서 누구든지 소송 문제로 왕을 찾아오는 사람이 있으면 그를 불러 어디 사람이 냐고묻고그가어느지파사람이라고 대답하면
3 그는 곧잘 이렇게 말하였다. “이 문제 에 있어서 당신이 옳고 정당하지만 유 감스럽게도당신의소송문제를들어 줄 대리인을 왕이 세우지 않았습니다.
4 내가 만일 이 땅의 재판관이 된다면 얼 마나 좋겠습니까! 그러면 소송 문제를 가진 사람은 누구든지 나에게 찾아올 수 있고 또 나는 그들의 문제를 공정하 게해결해줄것입니다.”
5 그러고서그는누구든지자기에게와 서 절하려고 하면 그러지 못하게 하고 오히려 손을 내밀어 그를 붙들고 입을 맞추곤 하였다.
6 압살롬은 왕에게 재판받으러 나오는 모든 사람을 이런 식으로 대하여 이스 라엘 사람의 마음을 도둑질하였다.
7-8 그로부 4년이지난후에압살롬이 왕에게 말하였다. “내가 여호와께 서약 한 것이 있습니다. 지금 헤브론으로 가 서 그 서약을 지키게 해 주십시오. 내가 그술에 있을 때 나는 여호와께서 나를 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아가게 해 주시 면 여호와께 제물을 드리겠다고 서약 하였습니다.”
9 그러자 왕은 “좋다. 가서 너의 서약을 지켜라” 하고 허락하였다. 그래서 압 살롬은 헤브론으로 갔다.
10 그러나 그는 이스라엘 각처에 몰래 사 람들을 보내며 이렇게 지시하였다. “너희는 나팔 소리가 나거든 ‘압살롬 이 헤브론에서 왕이 되었다!’ 하고 외 쳐라.”
11 그때압살롬의초대를받아예루살렘 에서 그와 함께 간 사람 200명이 있었 으나 그들은 압살롬의 의도가 무엇인 지 전혀 알지 못하였다.
12 압살롬은제사를드리는동안사람을 보내 다윗의 자문관인 길로 사람 아히 도벨을 초청해 왔는데 [a]그는 압살롬을 지지하고 나섰다. 반역 음모의 세력이 점점 커지자 압살롬을 따르는 자들이 계속불어났다.
다윗이 도망함
13 이때어떤사람이다윗에게와서 “이 스라엘 사람들의 마음이 압살롬에게 쏠리고 있습니다” 하고 말해 주었다.
14 그러자 다윗은 자기와 함께 예루살렘 에 있는 모든 신하들에게 이렇게 말하 였다. “그렇다면 우리는 즉시 도망가 야한다. 그렇지않으면우리가압살 롬의손에한사람도살아남지못할 것이다. 자, 빨리서둘러라! 우물쭈물 하다가는 그가 급습하여 우리를 치고 예루살렘주민을다죽이고말것이 다!”
15 그때그의신하들은 “왕이무엇을하 시든지 우리는 왕을 따르겠습니다” 하 고 대답하였다.
16 그래서왕은궁을지킬후 10명만 남겨두고모든가족과신하들을데리 고 즉시 성을 떠났다.
17-18 다윗은 성 어귀에 와서 잠시 발길 을 멈추고 모든 신하들과 [b]경호병들과 가드에서 그와 함께 온 600명의 군인 들을 앞서 가게 하였다.
19-20 러나왕은가드사람잇대를보 더니 이렇게 말하였다. “어째서 네가 우리와 함께 가려고 하느냐? 너는 예 루살렘으로돌아가서새왕과함께머 물러있거라. 너는망명해온외국인 이다. 이제우리는어디로가야할지 도모르는데어떻게내가어제온너 에게 우리와 함께 유랑의 길을 떠나자 고할수있겠느냐? 그러니너는네동 족들을 데리고 돌아가거라. 여호와께 서 너에게 은혜 베푸시기를 원한다.”
21 그러나 잇대는 이렇게 대답하였다. “내가살아계신여호와앞에서목숨 을 걸고 맹세하지만 죽든지 살든지 왕 이 가시는 곳이라면 어디든지 따라가 겠습니다.”
22 그러자 다윗이 “좋다. 우리와 함께 가 자” 하였다. 그래서 잇대는 자기를 따 라온 사람들과 가족들을 데리고 다윗 의 일행과 함께 갔다.
23 다윗의일행이지나갈때온예루살렘 주민이소리높여울었다. 왕도기드 론 시내를 건너가자 그의 일행은 모두 광야로 향하였다.
24 사독과 그와 함께한 레위 사람들이 하나님의 궤를 메어다가 내려놓고 아 비아달도 올라와서 모든 사람이 성에 서 다 빠져나올 때까지 기다렸다.
25 그때왕이사독에게말하였다. “하나 님의궤를다시성으로메고가시오. 만일 내가 여호와께 은총을 입는다면 그가 언젠가는 나를 돌아가게 하여 궤 와그의처소를다시볼수있도록하 실 것이오.
26 그러나여호와께서나를기쁘게여기 시지 않으시면 그가 좋으실 대로 나에 게 하도록 하시오.”
27 그러고서왕은사독에게다시말하였 다. “당신은 선견자가 아니오? 당신의 아들 아히마아스와 아비아달의 아들 요나단을 데리고 평안히 성으로 돌아 가시오.
28 내가요단강나루터에서당신의소식 을 기다리겠소. 당신은 내가 광야로 들 어가기 전에 예루살렘에서 일어나는 일을나에게알려주시오.”
29 그래서사독과아비아달은하나님의 궤를 예루살렘에 다시 메어다 놓고 그 곳에 머물러 있었다.
30 다윗이 슬피 울며 머리를 가리고 맨발 로감람산길을올라가자그와함께 가는 백성들도 머리를 가리고 울면서 그 길을 올라갔다.
31 다윗은 자기 자문관이었던 아히도벨이 압살롬의 반역에 가담했다는 말을 듣 고 “여호와여, 아히도벨이 압살롬에게 주는 조언이 어리석은 것이 되게 하소 서” 하고기도하였다.
32 다윗이 예배처가 있는 감람산 꼭대기 에이르렀을때그의신실한친구인 아렉사람후새가옷을찢고티끌을 머리에 뒤집어쓴 채 그를 기다리고 있 었다.
33-34 이때 다윗이 그에게 말하였다. “자 네가나와함께가면오히려나에게 짐이될걸세. 그러니자네는예루살 렘으로 돌아가서 압살롬에게 ‘왕이여, 내가왕의부친에게한것처럼왕을 충성스럽게 섬기겠습니다’ 하고 말하 게. 그러면 아히도벨의 모략을 꺾을 수있을것이네. 그것이자네가나를 돕는 길일세.
35-36 제사장 사독과 아비아달도 거기 있네. 자네는 왕궁에서 일어나는 일을 모조리 그들에게 말해 주게. 그러면 그들이 자기들의 아들인 아히마아스 와요나단을나에게보내그정보를 일러 줄 것이네.”
37 그래서 다윗의 친구인 후새는 그 곳을 떠나 예루살렘으로 돌아갔는데 그때 압살롬도 성으로 들어가고 있었다.

Absalom’s Conspiracy
15 In the course of time,(A) Absalom provided himself with a chariot(B) and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate.(C) Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”(D) 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land!(E) Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”
5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts(F) of the people of Israel.
7 At the end of four[a] years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord. 8 While your servant was living at Geshur(G) in Aram, I made this vow:(H) ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.[b]’”
9 The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets,(I) then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’” 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter. 12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel(J) the Gilonite, David’s counselor,(K) to come from Giloh,(L) his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.(M)
David Flees
13 A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”
14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee,(N) or none of us will escape from Absalom.(O) We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
15 The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”
16 The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines(P) to take care of the palace. 17 So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city. 18 All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites(Q) and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.
19 The king said to Ittai(R) the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner,(S) an exile from your homeland. 20 You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander(T) about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your people with you. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness.”[c](U)
21 But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”(V)
22 David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him.
23 The whole countryside wept aloud(W) as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley,(X) and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.
24 Zadok(Y) was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark(Z) of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar(AA) offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place(AB) again. 26 But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.(AC)”
27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand?(AD) Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan.(AE) You and Abiathar return with your two sons. 28 I will wait at the fords(AF) in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping(AG) as he went; his head(AH) was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up. 31 Now David had been told, “Ahithophel(AI) is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
32 When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai(AJ) the Arkite(AK) was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust(AL) on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be a burden(AM) to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,’(AN) then you can help me by frustrating(AO) Ahithophel’s advice. 35 Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.(AP) 36 Their two sons, Ahimaaz(AQ) son of Zadok and Jonathan(AR) son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”
37 So Hushai,(AS) David’s confidant, arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom(AT) was entering the city.
