26 아그립바가 바울에게 말하였다. “네 자신을 위해서 하고 싶은 말을 해도 좋다.”
그러자 바울은 앞으로 손을 내밀고 자신을 변호하기 시작하였다. 2 “아그립바왕 전하, 유대 사람들이 저를 고발한 일에 대해 오늘 전하 앞에서 제 자신을 변호하게 된 것을 매우 다행스럽게 생각합니다. 3 전하께서는 유대 사람의 관습과 그들이 문제 삼는 점들을 잘 알고 계시기 때문입니다. 그러므로 부디 제 말을 끝까지 들어 주시기 바랍니다.
4 모든 유대 사람은 제가 젊었을 때부터 지금까지 어떻게 살아왔는지 잘 알고 있습니다. 곧 제가 제 동족 가운데서 지내던 일과 예루살렘에서 지내던 일을 처음부터 다 알고 있다는 말입니다. 5 그들은 오래 전부터 저를 알아 왔습니다. 그들이 하고 싶은 마음만 있다면, 제가 우리 종교 가운데서 가장 엄격한 종파인 바리새파의 한 사람으로 살아왔다는 것을 증언해 줄 수도 있을 것입니다. 6 그리고 제가 지금 이 재판 자리에 서 있는 것은, 제가 하나님께서 우리 조상과 맺으신 약속에 희망을 걸고 있기 때문입니다. 7 이 희망은, 우리 이스라엘 열두 가문이 밤낮으로 열심히 하나님을 섬기면서 이루어지기를 바라고 있는 바로 그 희망입니다. 전하, 제가 지금 유대 사람들에게 고발당하고 있는 것도 바로 이 희망 때문입니다. 8 여러분은 어찌하여 하나님께서 죽은 사람을 다시 살리신다는 것을 믿을 수 없는 일로 여기십니까?
9 저도 한때는 나사렛 예수의 이름과 맞서서, 제 힘으로 할 수 있는 일은 다 해야 한다고 생각했습니다. 10 제가 예루살렘에서 한 일이 바로 그런 일이었습니다. 저는 높은 제사장들에게서 권한을 받아서 많은 믿는 이들을 감옥에 처넣었습니다. 그리고 그들을 죽일 때, 저는 그 일에 찬성하였습니다. 11 그리고 회당마다 찾아가서, 그들을 벌주고 억지로 그들의 신앙을 부인하게 하였습니다. 저는 그들에게 너무도 화가 나서, 다른 나라에 있는 도시들까지 찾아다니면서 그들을 박해하였습니다.
12 이런 일을 하고 다니던 가운데, 한번은 높은 제사장들에게서 권한과 임무를 받아 가지고 다마스커스로 가고 있었습니다. 13 오, 전하, 제가 한낮에 길을 가고 있는데, 갑자기 태양보다 더 밝은 빛이 저와 또 저와 같이 가던 사람들을 둘러싸는 것이었습니다. 14 우리는 모두 땅에 엎드렸습니다. 그리고 아람 말[a]로 ‘사울아, 사울아, 어찌하여 네가 나를 박해하느냐? 뾰족한 몰이막대기를 발로 차면, 너만 아플 뿐이다.’ 하는 목소리가 들려왔습니다.
15 그래서 제가 ‘주여, 당신은 누구십니까?’ 하고 여쭈었습니다.
주께서 대답하셨습니다. ‘나는 네가 박해하는 예수다. 16 자, 이제 일어나 네 발로 서라. 내가 네게 나타난 것은, 너를 내 일꾼으로 삼아서, 네가 나를 본 것과 내가 앞으로 네게 보여 줄 일에 대한 증인으로 삼으려는 것이다. 17 나는 너를 네 동족과 이방 사람들의 손에서 건져 주어, 이방 사람들에게 보내겠다. 18 너는 그들의 눈을 열어 진리를 보게 하고, 어둠에서 벗어나 빛으로 돌아서게 하고, 사탄의 손아귀에서 벗어나 하나님께 돌아오게 할 것이다. 그리하여 그들이 죄를 용서 받고, 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 사람들 가운데 들게 할 것이다.’
19 아그립바왕[b] 전하, 저는 그 하늘의 환상을 거스르지 않았습니다. 20 저는 먼저 다마스커스에 있는 사람들에게, 그리고 예루살렘과 온 유대 지방 사람들에게, 나아가서 이방 사람들에게 회개하고 하나님께 돌아와야 한다고 전하였습니다. 그리고 자신들의 행위로 회개한 것을 증명해야 한다고 전하였습니다. 21 바로 그 때문에 유대 사람들이, 제가 성전 뜰에 있을 때에 저를 붙들어서 죽이려고 했던 것입니다. 22 저는 오늘까지 하나님의 도움을 받았습니다. 그래서 이렇게 이 자리에 서서 낮은 사람에게나 높은 사람에게나 증언을 하고 있습니다. 저는, 예언자들과 모세가 앞으로 일어날 일이라고 말한 것 밖에는 다른 어떤 이야기도 전하지 않습니다. 23 그들이 앞으로 일어나리라고 예언한 그 일이란, 그리스도께서 반드시 고난을 겪으셔야 한다는 것과, 죽은 사람들 가운데서 처음으로 살아난 분이 되어, 우리 백성과 다른 나라 백성 모두에게 빛을 선포하시리라는 것입니다.”
24 이렇게 바울이 자기를 변호하자 베스도가 큰 소리로 말하였다. “바울아, 네가 미쳤구나! 너의 많은 학문이 너를 미치게 하는구나.”
25 바울이 대답하였다. “존경하는 베스도 각하, 저는 미치지 않았습니다. 제가 말씀드리는 것은 맑은 정신으로 드리는 참말입니다. 26 여기 계신 아그립바왕께서 이 일들에 대해서 잘 알고 계시기 때문에, 저는 거리낌 없이 전하께 말씀드립니다. 저는 전하께서 이 일을 잘 알고 계시리라 믿습니다. 이 일은 어느 한쪽 구석에서 일어난 일이 아니기 때문입니다. 27 아그립바왕 전하, 전하께서는 예언자들이 기록하여 놓은 것을 믿으십니까? 저는 전하께서 믿으신다는 것을 알고 있습니다.”
28 그러자 아그립바왕이 바울에게 말하였다. “너는 짧은 시간에 나를 설득하여 그리스도인으로 만들 수 있다고 생각하느냐?”
29 바울이 대답하였다. “짧은 시간에든 긴 시간에든, 저는 전하뿐만 아니라 오늘 제 말을 듣고 있는 모든 사람이, 저처럼 쇠사슬에 묶이는 일을 빼고는 저와 똑같이 되기를 하나님께 기도합니다.”
30 그러자 왕이 일어섰고, 총독과 버니게[c]와, 그들과 함께 앉아 있던 사람들이 자리에서 일어났다. 31 그들은 그 자리를 떠나면서 이렇게 이야기를 주고받았다. “이 사람은 사형을 당하거나 감옥에 갇힐 만한 일을 한 것이 없소.” 32 아그립바가 베스도에게 말하였다. “이 사람이 시저에게 상소하지 않았으면 풀려날 수도 있었을 것이오.”

바울의 변호
26 아그립바왕이 바울에게 말하는 것을 허락하자 바울은 손을 들어 인사를 한 후 이렇게 변명하였다.
2 “오늘 아그립바왕 앞에서 유대인들이 나를 고소한 것에 대하여 변명하게 된 것을 다행으로 생각합니다.
3 특히 왕께서 유대인들의 풍속과 문제들을 잘 아시니 내 변명을 끝까지 들어 주시기 바랍니다.
4 유대인들은 내가 어렸을 때부터 내 고향과 예루살렘에서 어떻게 살아왔는지를 다 알고 있습니다.
5 그들은 처음부터 나를 알고 있기 때문에 내가 우리 종교의 가장 엄격한 바리새파에서 생활해 왔다는 것을 얼마든지 증거할 수 있을 것입니다.
6 지금 내가 여기서 심문을 받는 것은 하나님이 우리 조상들에게 약속하신 것에 희망을 두고 있기 때문입니다.
7 이것은 우리 이스라엘 열두 지파가 밤낮 하나님을 열심히 섬기며 이루어지기를 바라는 약속입니다. 아그립바왕이시여, 나는 바로 이런 희망 때문에 유대인들에게 고소를 당하고 있습니다.
8 하나님이 죽은 사람을 살리시는 것을 어째서 여러분은 믿지 못할 일로 여기십니까?
9 나도 전에는 나사렛 예수님의 이름을 대적하는 일이라면 발벗고 나서야 할 것으로 생각하고
10 예루살렘에서 그 일을 직접 감행했습니다. 나는 대제사장들에게서 권한을 받아 많은 성도들을 감옥에 가뒀으며 또 그들을 죽이는 데에도 찬성했습니다.
11 그리고 모든 회당을 돌아다니면서 그들을 처벌하고 강제로 [a]예수님을 저주하게 했습니다. 더욱이 그들에 대하여 화가 머리 끝까지 치밀어 오른 나는 외국의 여러 도시에까지 가서 신자들을 괴롭혔습니다.
12 “이런 일로 나는 대제사장들에게서 권한과 임무를 부여받아 다마스커스로 가게 되었습니다.
13 왕이시여, 정오쯤 되었을 때 내가 길에서 보니 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 나와 내 일행을 비추었습니다.
14 우리가 모두 땅에 엎드리자 히브리 말로 ‘사울아, 사울아, 네가 왜 나를 괴롭히느냐? [b]가시 채찍을 뒷발질해 봐야 너만 다칠 것이다’ 라는 음성이 내게 들려왔습니다.
15 그래서 내가 ‘당신은 누구십니까?’ 하고 묻자 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘나는 네가 핍박하는 예수이다.
16 일어서라. 나는 이제 너를 일꾼으로 삼아 네가 오늘 본 것과 앞으로 내가 보여 줄 일을 증거하게 하려고 너에게 나타났다.
17 내가 네 백성과 이방인들에게서 너를 구출하여 그들에게로 보내겠다.
18 이제 너는 그들의 눈을 뜨게 하여 어두움에서 빛으로, 사탄의 세력에서 하나님에게로 돌아오게 하고 나를 믿어 죄에서 용서받고 성도들이 받는 [c]하늘 나라의 축복을 받게 하라.’
19 “아그립바왕이시여, 그래서 나는 하늘의 그 환상에 거역하지 않고
20 먼저 다마스커스에서, 그 다음에 예루살렘과 온 유대에서, 그리고 이방인들에게까지 가서 회개하고 하나님께 돌아와 회개한 것을 행동으로 보이라고 외쳤습니다.
21 그러자 유대인들이 성전에서 나를 붙잡아 죽이려고 했습니다.
22 그러나 나는 하나님의 도우심을 받아 오늘도 여기 서서 높고 낮은 모든 사람들에게 예언자들과 모세가 예언한 한 가지 사실을 증거하게 되었습니다.
23 그것은 그리스도께서 고난을 당하시고 죽은 사람들 가운데서 맨 먼저 부활하셔서 이스라엘 백성과 이방인들에게 구원의 빛을 선포하시리라는 것입니다.”
24 바울이 이렇게 변명을 하자 베스도가 큰 소리로 “바울아, 네가 미쳤다. 너의 많은 학문이 너를 미치게 하고 있다” 하고 외쳤다.
25 그러나 바울은 이렇게 대답하였다. “베스도 각하, 나는 미치지 않았습니다. 맑은 정신으로 참된 진리를 말하고 있습니다.
26 이 일은 한쪽 구석에서 된 일이 아니기 때문에 내가 자신 있게 말합니다만 아그립바왕께서도 이 일에 대하여 하나도 빠짐없이 다 아실 줄 믿습니다.
27 아그립바왕이시여, 예언자들을 믿으십니까? 물론 믿으시는 줄 압니다.”
28 그러자 아그립바왕이 바울에게 “네가 [d]이 몇 마디 말로 나를 그리스도인으로 만들 것 같으냐?” 하였다.
29 그래서 바울은 “말이 적든 많든 왕뿐만 아니라 오늘 내 말을 듣는 모든 사람이 이렇게 묶인 일 외에는 다 나와 같이 되기를 하나님께 기도합니다” 하고 대답하였다.
30 그러자 왕과 총독과 버니게와 또 함께 앉았던 사람들이 일어나
31 밖으로 나가면서 “이 사람은 사형을 당하거나 갇힐 만한 짓은 아무것도 하지 않았다” 하고 서로 말하였다.
32 그때 아그립바왕은 “이 사람이 황제에게 상소만 하지 않았더라면 놓아 줄 수도 있었을 텐데” 하고 베스도에게 말하였다.

26 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”(A)
So Paul motioned with his hand(B) and began his defense: 2 “King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you(C) today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews,(D) 3 and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs(E) and controversies.(F) Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.
4 “The Jewish people all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child,(G) from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem. 5 They have known me for a long time(H) and can testify, if they are willing, that I conformed to the strictest sect(I) of our religion, living as a Pharisee.(J) 6 And now it is because of my hope(K) in what God has promised our ancestors(L) that I am on trial today. 7 This is the promise our twelve tribes(M) are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night.(N) King Agrippa, it is because of this hope that these Jews are accusing me.(O) 8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?(P)
9 “I too was convinced(Q) that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose(R) the name of Jesus of Nazareth.(S) 10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people(T) in prison,(U) and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.(V) 11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished,(W) and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.
12 “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. 13 About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. 14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice(X) saying to me in Aramaic,[a](Y) ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’
15 “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’
“ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16 ‘Now get up and stand on your feet.(Z) I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.(AA) 17 I will rescue you(AB) from your own people and from the Gentiles.(AC) I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes(AD) and turn them from darkness to light,(AE) and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins(AF) and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’(AG)
19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient(AH) to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus,(AI) then to those in Jerusalem(AJ) and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles,(AK) I preached that they should repent(AL) and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.(AM) 21 That is why some Jews seized me(AN) in the temple courts and tried to kill me.(AO) 22 But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen(AP)— 23 that the Messiah would suffer(AQ) and, as the first to rise from the dead,(AR) would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”(AS)
24 At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind,(AT) Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning(AU) is driving you insane.”
25 “I am not insane, most excellent(AV) Festus,” Paul replied. “What I am saying is true and reasonable. 26 The king is familiar with these things,(AW) and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.”
28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”(AX)
29 Paul replied, “Short time or long—I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.”(AY)
30 The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice(AZ) and those sitting with them. 31 After they left the room, they began saying to one another, “This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment.”(BA)
32 Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been set free(BB) if he had not appealed to Caesar.”(BC)

26 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:
2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:
3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.
4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;
5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God, unto our fathers:
7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.
8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?
9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.
12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,
13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.
14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.
22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.
26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.
28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.
30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:
31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.
32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.
