디모데가 바울과 실라와 함께 가다
16 바울은 더베에 갔다가 루스드라로 갔다. 거기에는 디모데라는 제자가 있었다. 디모데의 어머니는 유대 여자로 그리스도를 믿는 이였고, 아버지는 그리스 사람이었다. 2 루스드라와 이고니온에 있는 믿는 이들이 모두 디모데를 좋게 말하고 있었다. 3 바울은 디모데를 데려가고 싶었다. 그러나 그 고장에 사는 모든 유대 사람이 디모데의 아버지가 그리스 사람이라는 것을 알고 있었기 때문에, 먼저 디모데에게 할례를 베풀었다. 4 바울 일행은 여러 도시를 두루 다니면서, 믿는 이들에게 예루살렘의 사도들과 장로들이 정한 규정을 전해 주며, 그것들을 잘 지키라고 일렀다. 5 그리하여 그곳 교회들은, 그 믿음이 점점 더 튼튼해지고 그 수가 나날이 늘어 갔다.
바울, 마케도니아로 오라는 부르심을 받다
6 바울과 그의 일행이 브루기아와 갈라디아 지방을 두루 거쳐 갔으나, 성령께서 그들이 아시아[a]에서 말씀[b] 전하는 것을 막으셨다. 7 그들이 무시아의 경계에 이르러 비두니아로 들어가려고 하였으나 예수의 영이 그것을 허락하지 않으셨다. 8 그리하여 그들은 무시아를 지나 드로아로 갔다. 9 그곳에서 바울에게 밤중에 환상이 나타났다. 어떤 마케도니아 사람이 바울 앞에 서서 “마케도니아로 건너와서 저희를 도와주십시오.” 하고 간절히 부탁하는 것이었다. 10 바울이 그 환상을 본 뒤에, 우리는 곧 마케도니아로 떠날 준비를 하였다. 그들에게 기쁜 소식을 전하라고 하나님께서 우리를 부르시는 것이라고 확신하였기 때문이다.
루디아의 개종
11 우리는 배를 타고 드로아를 떠나 곧장 사모드라게로 갔다가 이튿날 네압볼리로 갔다. 12 그리고 다시 빌립보로 갔다. 빌립보는 마케도니아의 그쪽 지방에서 아주 중요한 도시이고 로마의 식민지였다. 우리는 빌립보에서 며칠을 묵었다.
13 우리는 안식일에 성문 밖으로 나가, 유대 사람들이 모여서 기도하는 곳이 있으리라고 짐작되는 강가를 찾아갔다. 우리는 거기에 앉아서, 모여 있던 여자들에게 이야기하기 시작하였다. 14 그 가운데에는 루디아라는 여자가 있었다. 그 여자는 두아디라라는 도시 출신으로 값비싼 보라색 옷감 장사였고, 하나님을 섬기는 사람이었다. 루디아가 듣고 있는 가운데, 하나님께서 그 여자의 마음을 열어서 바울의 말을 받아들이게 하셨다. 15 루디아와 그 집안사람들이 세례를 받고 나서, 루디아가 우리를 자기의 집으로 초청하였다. 그 여자는 “저를 주를 믿는 사람으로 여기시면, 제 집에 와 계십시오.” 하고 말하며 우리를 설득하였다.
바울과 실라, 감옥에 갇히다
16 어느 날 우리는 기도하는 곳으로 가다가 점을 치는 귀신[c]이 들린 여종을 하나 만났다. 그 여종은 점을 쳐서 주인들에게 많은 돈을 벌어 주고 있었다. 17 그 여종이 바울과 우리를 따라오면서 큰 소리로 외쳤다. “이분들은 지극히 높으신 하나님의 종들입니다! 이분들은 여러분에게 구원받는 길을 전하고 있습니다!” 18 그 여종이 여러 날을 두고 그렇게 하자, 바울은 괴로운 나머지 몸을 돌려 그 귀신에게 말하였다. “내가 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 명령한다. 그 여자에게서 나가거라!” 그러자 그 귀신이 곧바로 나갔다.
19 그 여종의 주인들은 자기들에게서 돈벌이할 희망이 사라진 것을 보고, 바울과 실라를 붙들어 장터에 있는 관리들 앞으로 끌고 갔다. 20 그들은 바울과 실라를 치안 판사에게 끌고 가서 이렇게 말하였다. “이 사람들은 유대 사람들로서, 우리 도시를 어지럽히고 있습니다! 21 이들은 우리 로마 시민들이 받아들이거나 실천할 수 없는 법에 어긋난 관습을 선전하고 있습니다.”
22 많은 사람이 합세하여 바울과 실라를 공격하였다. 치안 판사는 바울과 실라의 옷을 찢고 매로 때리라고 명령하였고, 23 바울과 실라를 심하게 매질하여 옥에 넣고는 간수에게 단단히 지키라고 명령하였다. 24 간수는 그 명령을 받고 두 사람을 맨 안쪽에 있는 감방에 넣고, 두 발에 나무 차꼬[d]를 채워 놓았다.
25 한밤중쯤에 바울과 실라가 기도하며 하나님께 찬미의 노래를 부르고 있었고, 다른 죄수들은 그 소리를 듣고 있었다. 26 그때 갑자기 강한 지진이 일어났다. 어찌나 심한 지진이던지 감옥이 서 있는 터가 다 흔들렸다. 곧 감옥 문들이 모두 열리고, 죄수들을 벽에 묶어 둔 사슬들이 모두 벽에서 풀려났다. 27 간수는 잠에서 깨어나 문들이 다 열려 있는 것을 보고 죄수들이 모두 달아난 줄로 알고, 칼을 뽑아 자살하려고 하였다. 28 그때 바울이 큰 소리로 외쳤다. “우리 모두 여기 그대로 있으니, 당신의 몸을 해치지 마시오.”
29 간수는 등불을 가져오라고 소리친 다음, 감옥 안으로 뛰어 들어가 무서워 떨면서 바울과 실라 앞에 엎드렸다. 30 그러고는 두 사람을 감옥 밖으로 데리고 나와서 말하였다. “두 분 선생님, 제가 구원을 얻으려면 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까?”
31 두 사람이 대답하였다. “주 예수를 믿으십시오. 그러면 당신과 당신의 집안이 구원을 얻을 것입니다.” 32 그리고 간수와 그 집안사람 모두에게 주의 말씀[e]을 들려주었다. 33 간수는 그날 밤 그 늦은 시각에 두 사람을 데려다가 상처를 씻어 주고, 그 자리에서 온 집안이 함께 세례를 받았다. 34 간수는 두 사람을 자기 집으로 데려가 음식을 대접하였다. 그리고 온 집안이 하나님을 믿게 된 것을 기뻐하였다.
35 아침이 되자 치안 판사는 “그 사람들을 풀어 주어라.” 라고 말하며 부하들을 보냈다.
36 그래서 간수는 바울에게 “치안 판사가 선생님들을 풀어 주라고 부하들을 보냈습니다. 그러니 이제 나와서 평안히 가십시오.” 하고 치안 판사의 말을 전하였다.
37 그러나 바울은 이렇게 대답하였다. “치안 판사는 아무 잘못도 없는 우리를 사람들 앞에서 매질하였습니다. 로마 시민[f]인 우리를 재판도 하지 않고 감옥에 가두었다가 이제 와서 슬그머니 풀어 주겠다는 것입니까? 결코 그럴 수는 없습니다! 그들이 직접 와서 우리를 데리고 나가라고 하십시오!”
38 부하들은 그 말을 치안 판사에게 전하였다. 치안 판사는 두 사람이 로마 시민이라는 말을 듣고 겁이 나서, 39 두 사람에게 가서 사과하였다. 그리고 두 사람을 밖으로 데리고 나와 그 도시에서 떠나 달라고 부탁하였다. 40 감옥에서 나온 바울과 실라는 루디아의 집으로 갔다. 그리고 그곳에 있던 형제들을 격려하고 길을 떠났다.

Timoteo acompaña a Pablo
16 Llegó a Derbe y Listra, y he aquí había allí cierto discípulo llamado Timoteo[a], hijo de una mujer judía creyente, pero de padre griego. 2 Él era de buen testimonio entre los hermanos en Listra y en Iconio. 3 Pablo quiso que este fuera con él, y tomándole lo circuncidó por causa de los judíos que estaban en aquellos lugares, porque todos sabían que su padre era griego.
4 Cuando pasaban por las ciudades, les entregaban las decisiones tomadas por los apóstoles y los ancianos que estaban en Jerusalén, para que las observaran. 5 Así las iglesias eran fortalecidas en la fe, y su número aumentaba cada día.
Pablo pasa a Macedonia
6 Atravesaron la región de Frigia y de Galacia, porque les fue prohibido por el Espíritu Santo hablar la palabra en Asia. 7 Cuando llegaron a la frontera de Misia, procuraban entrar en Bitinia, pero el Espíritu de Jesús no se lo permitió. 8 Entonces, después de pasar junto a Misia, descendieron a Troas. 9 Y por la noche se le mostró a Pablo una visión en la que un hombre de Macedonia estaba de pie rogándole y diciendo: “¡Pasa a Macedonia y ayúdanos!”.
10 En cuanto vio la visión, de inmediato procuramos salir para Macedonia, teniendo por seguro que Dios nos había llamado para anunciarles el evangelio. 11 Zarpamos, pues, de Troas y fuimos con rumbo directo a Samotracia, y al día siguiente a Neápolis; 12 y de allí a Filipos, que es una ciudad principal de la provincia de Macedonia, y una colonia. Pasamos algunos días en aquella ciudad.
La conversión de Lidia
13 Y el día sábado salimos fuera de la puerta de la ciudad, junto al río, donde pensábamos que habría un lugar de oración. Nos sentamos allí y hablábamos a las mujeres que se habían reunido. 14 Entonces escuchaba cierta mujer llamada Lidia, cuyo corazón abrió el Señor para que estuviera atenta a lo que Pablo decía. Era vendedora de púrpura de la ciudad de Tiatira, y temerosa de Dios. 15 Como ella y su familia fueron bautizadas, nos rogó diciendo: “Ya que han juzgado que soy fiel al Señor, entren en mi casa y quédense”. Y nos obligó a hacerlo.

16 Aconteció que, mientras íbamos al lugar de oración, nos salió al encuentro una joven esclava que tenía espíritu de adivinación, la cual producía gran ganancia a sus amos, adivinando. 17 Esta, siguiendo a Pablo y a nosotros, gritaba diciendo:
—¡Estos hombres son siervos del Dios Altísimo, quienes les anuncian el camino de salvación!
18 Hacía esto por muchos días. Y Pablo, ya fastidiado, se dio vuelta y dijo al espíritu:
—¡Te mando en el nombre de Jesucristo que salgas de ella!
Y salió en el mismo momento.
19 Pero cuando sus amos vieron que se les había esfumado su esperanza de ganancia, prendieron a Pablo y a Silas y los arrastraron a la plaza, ante las autoridades. 20 Al presentarlos ante los magistrados, dijeron:
—¡Estos hombres, siendo judíos, alborotan nuestra ciudad! 21 ¡Predican costumbres que no nos es lícito recibir ni practicar, pues somos romanos!
22 Entonces el pueblo se levantó a una contra ellos. Y los magistrados les despojaron de sus ropas con violencia y mandaron azotarles con varas. 23 Después de golpearles con muchos azotes, los echaron en la cárcel y ordenaron al carcelero que los guardara con mucha seguridad. 24 Cuando este recibió semejante orden, los metió en el calabozo de más adentro y sujetó sus pies en el cepo.
Conversión del carcelero de Filipos
25 Como a la medianoche, Pablo y Silas estaban orando y cantando himnos a Dios, y los presos les escuchaban. 26 Entonces, de repente sobrevino un fuerte terremoto, de manera que los cimientos de la cárcel fueron sacudidos. Al instante, todas las puertas se abrieron y las cadenas de todos se soltaron. 27 Cuando el carcelero despertó y vio abiertas las puertas de la cárcel, sacó su espada y estaba a punto de matarse, porque pensaba que los presos se habían escapado. 28 Pero Pablo gritó a gran voz, diciendo:
—¡No te hagas ningún mal, pues todos estamos aquí!
29 Entonces él pidió luz y se lanzó adentro, y se postró temblando ante Pablo y Silas. 30 Sacándolos afuera, les dijo:
—Señores, ¿qué debo hacer para ser salvo?
31 Ellos dijeron:
—Cree en el Señor Jesús y serás salvo, tú y tu casa.
32 Y le hablaron la palabra del Señor a él y a todos los que estaban en su casa. 33 En aquella hora de la noche, los tomó consigo y les lavó las heridas de los azotes. Y él fue bautizado en seguida, con todos los suyos. 34 Les hizo entrar en su casa, les puso la mesa y se regocijó de que con toda su casa había creído en Dios.
35 Cuando se hizo de día, los magistrados enviaron a los oficiales a decirle:
—Suelta a esos hombres.
36 El carcelero comunicó a Pablo estas palabras:
—Los magistrados han enviado orden de que sean puestos en libertad; ahora, pues, salgan y váyanse en paz.
37 Pero Pablo les dijo:
—Después de azotarnos públicamente sin ser condenados, siendo nosotros ciudadanos romanos, nos echaron en la cárcel; y ahora, ¿nos echan fuera a escondidas? ¡Pues no! ¡Que vengan ellos mismos a sacarnos!
38 Los oficiales informaron de estas palabras a los magistrados, quienes tuvieron miedo al oír que eran romanos. 39 Y fueron a ellos y les pidieron disculpas. Después de sacarlos, les rogaron que se fueran de la ciudad. 40 Entonces, después de salir de la cárcel, entraron en casa de Lidia; y habiendo visto a los hermanos, les exhortaron y luego partieron.

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas
16 Paul[a] came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named (A)Timothy, (B)the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 He was well spoken of by (C)the brothers[b] at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he (D)took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance (E)the decisions (F)that had been reached by (G)the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 (H)So the churches were strengthened in (I)the faith, and they increased in numbers (J)daily.
The Macedonian Call
6 And (K)they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but (L)the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down (M)to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul[c] had seen the vision, immediately (N)we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
The Conversion of Lydia
11 So, setting sail from Troas, we (O)made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to (P)Philippi, which is a leading city of the[d] district of Macedonia and (Q)a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13 And (R)on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate (S)to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we (T)sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, (U)who was a worshipper of God. The Lord (V)opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she was baptized, (W)and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she (X)prevailed upon us.
Paul and Silas in Prison
16 As we were going to (Y)the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had (Z)a spirit of (AA)divination and (AB)brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us, (AC)crying out, “These men are (AD)servants[e] of (AE)the Most High God, who proclaim to you (AF)the way of salvation.” 18 And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, (AG)“I command you (AH)in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And (AI)it came out that very hour.
19 But (AJ)when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and (AK)dragged them into the market-place before the rulers. 20 And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. 21 They (AL)advocate customs that are not lawful for us (AM)as Romans to accept or practise.” 22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders (AN)to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner (AO)prison and fastened their feet in (AP)the stocks.
The Philippian Jailer Converted
25 (AQ)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly (AR)there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately (AS)all the doors were opened, and (AT)everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and (AU)was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[f] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he (AV)fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, (AW)what must I do to be (AX)saved?” 31 And they said, (AY)“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you (AZ)and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them (BA)the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he (BB)was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he (BC)rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” 36 And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” 37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, (BD)uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” 38 The police reported these words to the magistrates, and (BE)they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. 39 So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and (BF)asked them to leave the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and visited (BG)Lydia. And when they had seen (BH)the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.
