헤롯 아그립바, 교회를 박해하다

12 이 무렵에 헤롯왕[a]이 교회에 속한 몇몇 사람에게 박해의 손길을 뻗쳤다. 2 그는 먼저 요한의 형제인 야고보를 칼로 죽였다. 3 그리고 유대 사람들이 이 일로 기뻐하는 것을 보고는, 서둘러 베드로도 잡아넣었다. 이 일은 누룩 없는 빵을 먹는 명절 기간에 일어났다. 4 헤롯은 베드로를 잡아서 감옥에 넣었다. 그러고는 네 명씩 짝을 지은 네 무리의 경비병들에게 베드로를 지키게 하였다. 유월절이 지나면 백성들 앞으로 그를 끌어낼 속셈이었다. 5 그리하여 베드로는 감옥에 갇혀 있었고, 교회는 베드로를 위해서 하나님께 간절히 기도하고 있었다.

베드로, 감옥을 나가다

6 헤롯이 베드로를 재판에 끌어내려는 바로 그 전 날 밤의 일이었다. 베드로는 두 개의 쇠사슬에 묶여서 두 병사들 사이에 잠들어 있었고, 문 앞에는 경비병들이 문을 지키고 있었다. 7 그런데 갑자기 주의 천사가 나타나 베드로 앞에 서자, 감방 안에 환한 빛이 가득하였다. 천사는 베드로의 옆구리를 찔러 깨우며 말하였다. “빨리 일어나라!” 그러자 베드로의 두 손목에서 쇠사슬이 벗겨졌다. 8 천사가 말하였다. “허리띠를 두르고 신을 신어라.” 베드로가 천사의 말을 따라 그대로 하였다. 천사가 다시 말하였다. “겉옷을 걸치고 나를 따라오너라.” 9 베드로는 천사를 따라 밖으로 나왔다. 베드로는 천사가 하고 있는 일이 실제로 일어나고 있는 일인 줄은 모르고, 자기가 환상을 보고 있다고 생각하였다. 10 천사와 베드로가 첫째 초소와 둘째 초소를 지나 시내로 나가는 철문 앞에 이르니, 철문이 저절로 열렸다. 둘이 밖으로 나와서 거리 하나를 지났을 때 갑자기 천사가 사라져 버렸다.

11 그제야 베드로는 정신이 들어 혼잣말을 하였다. “이제야 알겠구나. 주께서 당신의 천사를 보내셔서 나를 헤롯의 손에서 구해 주시고, 유대 백성이 내게 닥치리라고 기대하고 있던 모든 일에서 나를 구해 내셨구나.”

12 베드로는 이 사실을 깨닫고는 마가라고 하는 요한의 어머니 마리아의 집으로 갔다. 그곳에는 많은 사람이 모여서 기도하고 있었다. 13 베드로가 대문을 두드리자 로데라는 어린 여종이 나왔다. 14 로데는 베드로의 목소리를 알아듣고 너무 기뻐서 문은 열지도 않고 안으로 달려 들어가, 베드로가 문 밖에 서 있다고 알렸다.

15 사람들은 로데에게 “네가 정신이 나갔구나!” 하고 말하였다. 그래도 로데가 자기의 말이 사실이라고 우기자, 그들은 “그렇다면 베드로의 천사임이 틀림없다.” 라고 말하였다.

16 베드로가 계속해서 문을 두드리자 사람들이 문을 열었다. 그들은 정말로 베드로가 온 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 17 베드로는 손을 들어서 사람들을 조용히 하도록 한 다음에, 주께서 자기를 어떻게 감옥에서 꺼내 주셨는지 이야기하였다. 그리고 “야고보와 다른 형제들에게도 이 일을 알려 주시오.” 하고는, 그곳을 떠나 다른 곳으로 갔다.

18 아침이 되자 베드로가 없어진 일 때문에 경비병들 사이에 작지 않은 소동이 벌어졌다. 19 헤롯은 부하들을 풀어 베드로를 찾았으나 찾을 수가 없었다. 그는 경비병들을 불러 심문한 다음 그들을 사형에 처하라고 명령하였다. 그러고 나서 헤롯은 유대를 떠나 가이사랴로 내려가서 한동안 그곳에 머물렀다.

헤롯의 죽음

20 헤롯은 두로와 시돈 사람들에게 몹시 화나 있었다. 그래서 두로와 시돈 사람들은 사절단을 보내어 헤롯을 만나 보게 하였다. 그들은 헤롯의 시종인 블라스도를 설득한 다음, 그를 통해서 헤롯에게 화해를 요청하였다. 그들이 사는 지방은 왕의 영토에서 식량 공급을 받아야 했기 때문에 어쩔 수가 없었다.

21 정한 날이 되어 헤롯은 임금이 입는 곤룡포[b]를 떨쳐 입고, 보좌에 앉아서 백성들에게 연설을 하였다. 22 그러자 사람들이 외쳐 댔다. “이것은 사람의 목소리가 아니라 신의 목소리이다!” 23 곧바로 주의 천사가 헤롯을 치니, 그는 벌레들에게 파먹혀 죽고 말았다. 그가 영광을 하나님께 돌리지 않았기 때문이다.

24 하나님의 말씀은 점점 더 널리 퍼지고, 믿는 사람들이 더욱 늘어 갔다.

25 바나바와 사울은 예루살렘에서 할 일을 마치고 안디옥으로 돌아갔다. 그들은 마가라고 하는 요한도 데리고 갔다.

Herod’s Violence to the Church

12 Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. 2 Then he killed James (A)the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also. Now it was during (B)the Days of Unleavened Bread. 4 So (C)when he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four [a]squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover.

Peter Freed from Prison

5 Peter was therefore kept in prison, but [b]constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. 6 And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were [c]keeping the prison. 7 Now behold, (D)an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. 8 Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.” 9 So he went out and followed him, and (E)did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought (F)he was seeing a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, (G)which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that (H)the Lord has sent His angel, and (I)has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.”

12 So, when he had considered this, (J)he came to the house of Mary, the mother of (K)John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together (L)praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her gladness she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate. 15 But they said to her, “You are beside yourself!” Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said, (M)“It is his angel.”

16 Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But (N)motioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren.” And he departed and went to another place.

18 Then, as soon as it was day, there was no small [d]stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter. 19 But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death.

And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

Herod’s Violent Death

20 Now Herod had been very angry with the people of (O)Tyre and Sidon; but they came to him with one accord, and having made Blastus [e]the king’s personal aide their friend, they asked for peace, because (P)their country was [f]supplied with food by the king’s country.

21 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. 22 And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord (Q)struck him, because (R)he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and [g]died.

24 But (S)the word of God grew and multiplied.

Barnabas and Saul Appointed

25 And (T)Barnabas and Saul returned [h]from Jerusalem when they had (U)fulfilled their ministry, and they also (V)took with them (W)John whose surname was Mark.

Herod Kills James and Imprisons Peter

12 Now at that time, Herod the king laid hands on some of those from the church to harm them.[a] 2 So he executed James the brother of John with a sword. 3 And when he[b] saw that it was pleasing to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (Now this was during the feast[c] of Unleavened Bread.) 4 After he[d] had arrested him,[e] he also put him[f] in prison, handing him[g] over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out for public trial[h] after the Passover. 5 Thus Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer was fervently being made to God by the church for him.

Peter Rescued by an Angel

6 Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards before the door were watching the prison. 7 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood near him,[i] and a light shone in the prison cell. And striking Peter’s side, he woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly!”[j] And his chains fell off of his[k] hands. 8 And the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and put on your sandals!” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me!” 9 And he went out and[l] was following him.[m] And he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but was thinking he was seeing a vision. 10 And after they[n] had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened for them by itself, and they went out and[o] went forward along one narrow street, and at once the angel departed from him.

11 And when[p] Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know truly that the Lord has sent out his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and all that the Jewish people expected!”[q] 12 And when he[r] realized this,[s] he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John (who is also called Mark), where many people were gathered together and were praying. 13 And when[t] he knocked at the door of the gateway, a female slave named[u] Rhoda came up to answer. 14 And recognizing Peter’s voice, because of her[v] joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and[w] announced that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 But they said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting[x] it was so. And they kept saying,[y] “It is his angel!” 16 But Peter was continuing to knock, and when they[z] opened the door[aa] they saw him and were astonished. 17 But motioning to them with his[ab] hand to be silent, he related to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to James and to the brothers,” and he departed and[ac] went to another place.

18 Now when[ad] day came, there was not a little commotion among the soldiers as to what then had become of Peter. 19 And when[ae] Herod had searched for him and did not find him,[af] he questioned the guards and[ag] ordered that they be led away to execution. And he came down from Judea to Caesarea and[ah] stayed there.

Herod’s Gruesome Death

20 Now he was very angry with the Tyrians and Sidonians. So they came to him with one purpose, and after[ai] persuading Blastus, the king’s chamberlain,[aj] they asked for peace, because their country was supported with food from the king’s country. 21 So on an appointed day Herod, after[ak] putting on royal clothing and sitting down on the judgment seat, began to deliver a public address to them. 22 But the people began to call out loudly,[al] “The voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down because[am] he did not give the glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and[an] died. 24 But the word of God kept on increasing[ao] and multiplying.

25 So Barnabas and Saul returned to[ap] Jerusalem when they[aq] had completed their[ar] service, having taken along with them[as] John (who is also called Mark).

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison

12 It was about this time that King Herod(A) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John,(B) put to death with the sword.(C) 3 When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(D) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(E) 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(F)

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(G)

6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(H) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel(I) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(J)

8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(K) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(L) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself(M) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(N) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”

12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(O) where many people had gathered and were praying.(P) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(Q) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(R) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(S)

16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(T) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(U) and the other brothers and sisters(V) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(W)

Herod’s Death

Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(X) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(Y) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(Z)

21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(AA) of the Lord struck him down,(AB) and he was eaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God(AC) continued to spread and flourish.(AD)

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

25 When Barnabas(AE) and Saul had finished their mission,(AF) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(AG)
