고핫 자손이 맡은 일
4 주께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨다. 2 “레위 자손 가운데에서 고핫 갈래의 인구를 집안별 가족별로 조사하여라. 3 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에서 일할 남자의 수를 조사하여라.
4 고핫 자손이 만남의 장막에서 할 일은 더없이 거룩한 것들을 보살피는 것이다. 5 진이 이동할 때에는 아론과 그의 아들들이 성막 안으로 들어가서 칸막이 휘장을 걷어내려 그것으로 계약궤를 덮어라. 6 그리고 그 위에 고운 가죽 덮개를 얹고 또 그 위에 순청색 보자기를 덮은 다음에 채들을 제자리에 꿰어라.
7 거룩한 상 위에는 청색 보자기를 펴고 그 위에 큰 접시들과 국자들과 사발들과 부어 드리는 제물을 드리는 데 쓰는 항아리들을 올려놓아라. 상 위에 늘 차려 놓는 빵은 그대로 두어야 한다. 8 이것들 위에 진홍색 보자기를 펴고, 그 위에 다시 고운 가죽으로 만든 덮개를 얹은 다음 채들을 제자리에 꿰어라.
9 등잔대와 등잔들과 불 끄는 집게와 불똥 접시와 등잔에 채울 기름이 담긴 항아리들은 청색 보자기로 덮어라. 10 그러고 나서 그것을 고운 가죽 덮개로 싸서 들것 위에 얹어라.
11 금 제단 위에는 청색 보자기를 씌우고 고운 가죽 덮개로 덮은 다음 채들을 제자리에 꿰어라.
12 성소에서 쓰이는 모든 기구는 청색 보자기로 싸고 고운 가죽 덮개로 덮어서 들것 위에 얹어라.
13 놋쇠 제단의 경우에는 먼저 재를 다 쳐낸 다음 그 위에 자주색 보자기를 씌워라. 14 그런 다음 그 위에 제단에서 쓰는 불 옮기는 그릇들과 고기를 집는 갈고리들과 부삽들과 피를 담아 뿌리는 대접들과 같은 모든 기구를 얹어라. 그 위에 고운 가죽 덮개를 씌운 다음 채들을 제자리에 꿰어라.
15 아론과 그의 아들들이 거룩한 물건들과 그 물건에 딸린 모든 기구를 싸는 일을 다 마치고 진이 이동할 준비가 되면, 고핫 자손이 와서 그것들을 메고 가야 한다. 그들은 결코 거룩한 물건에 손을 대어서는 안 된다. 손을 대는 사람은 죽을 것이다. 고핫 자손은 만남의 장막에 있는 이런 물건들을 옮기는 일을 맡는다.
16 제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살은 불 켜는 기름과, 향기로운 향과 날마다 드리는 곡식제물과, 기름 붓는 의식에 쓰이는 기름을 책임진다. 그는 성막과 그 안에 있는 모든 것, 곧 거룩한 물건들과 거기 딸린 기구들을 책임진다.”
17 그런 다음 주께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨다. 18 “너희는 레위 사람 가운데서 고핫 갈래가 다 죽어 없어지지 않게 조심하여라. 19 그들이 가장 거룩한 물건들에 가까이 갈 때 그들이 죽지 않고 살게 하려면 이렇게 하여라. 아론과 그의 아들들이 함께 성소에 들어가서 고핫 자손 한 사람 한 사람에게 할 일과 옮겨야 할 물건을 일일이 정해 주어라. 20 고핫 자손이 안으로 들어가서 단 한 순간이라도 거룩한 물건들을 보아서는 안 된다. 그렇게 하였다가는 죽을 것이다.”
게르손 자손이 맡은 일
21 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 22 “게르손 자손의 인구도 가족별, 집안별로 조사하여라. 23 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에 딸린 일을 할 남자의 수를 조사하여라.
24 게르손 갈래의 자손들이 맡아서 해야 할 일과 옮겨야 할 것들은 다음과 같다. 25 그들은 성막에 치는 휘장들과 만남의 장막과 그 위에 치는 천막과 또 그 위에 덮는 고운 가죽 덮개와 만남의 장막 어귀에 치는 휘장과 26 뜰에 둘러 친 휘장과 성막과 제단을 둘러 싼 뜰의 문어귀에 치는 막과 거기에 딸린 밧줄과 그들의 작업 도구이다. 게르손 자손이 이것들에 관련된 일을 모두 맡는다. 27 그들이 이것들을 꾸리거나 옮길 때에는 반드시 아론과 그의 아들들의 지시를 따라서 하여야 한다. 또한 그들은 그들이 옮기는 모든 짐을 지키는 책임도 져야 한다. 28 이것이 게르손 갈래의 자손들이 만남의 장막에서 맡은 일이다. 그들은 제사장 아론의 아들인 이다말의 지시에 따라 자기들이 맡은 일을 하여야 한다.
므라리 자손이 맡은 일
29 므라리 자손의 인구를 집안별, 가족별로 조사하여라. 30 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에 딸린 일을 할 남자의 수를 조사하여라. 31 그들은 만남의 장막을 옮기는 일 말고도 성막의 널빤지들과 가로 버팀대들과 기둥들과 기둥 받침들을 지키는 일도 맡아야 한다. 32 그리고 뜰 둘레에 세우는 기둥들과 기둥 받침들과 천막 말뚝들과 밧줄들과 거기에 딸린 모든 장비를 지키는 일도 그들이 맡아야 한다. 그들 각자에게 옮겨야 할 물건을 정확하게 일러 주어라. 33 이것이 므라리 갈래의 자손들이 제사장 아론의 아들인 이다말의 지시에 따라 만남의 장막에서 하여야 할 일이다.”
레위 지파 사람들
34 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 회중의 지도자들이 고핫 자손의 인구를 집안별, 가족별로 조사하였다. 35 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에 딸린 일을 할 남자를 36 집안별로 조사하니 그 수가 이천칠백오십 명이었다. 37 이들이 고핫 갈래의 자손들 가운데서 등록된 사람들로 만남의 장막에서 일할 사람들이었다. 모세와 아론은 주께서 모세를 통해 명령하신 대로 그들을 등록시켰다.
38 게르손 자손의 인구도 집안별, 가족별로 조사하였다. 39 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에 딸린 일을 하러 온 남자를 40 집안별, 가족별로 등록시키니 그 수가 이천육백삼십 명이었다. 41 이들이 게르손 자손 가운데서 등록된 사람들로 만남의 장막에서 일할 사람들이었다. 모세와 아론은 주께서 명령하신 대로 그들을 등록시켰다.
42 므라리 자손의 인구를 집안별, 가족별로 조사하였다. 43 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지 만남의 장막에 딸린 일을 할 남자를 44 집안별로 등록시키니 그 수가 삼천이백 명이었다. 45 이들이 므라리 자손 가운데서 등록된 사람들로 만남의 장막에서 일할 사람들이었다. 모세와 아론은 주께서 모세를 통해 명령하신 대로 그들을 등록시켰다.
46 이렇게 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 회중의 지도자들이 레위 사람의 인구를 집안별, 가족별로 조사하였다. 47 그들은 서른 살에서 쉰 살까지의 남자들로 만남의 장막을 옮길 때 짐을 꾸리고 그 짐들을 옮기는 일을 할 사람들이었다. 48 등록된 사람의 수가 모두 팔천오백팔십 명이었다. 49 주께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 각 사람은 해야 할 일과 옮겨야 할 짐을 배정 받았다.
이렇게 하여 주께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 그들을 등록시켰다.

Duties of the Sons of Kohath
4 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 “Take a census of the sons of (A)Kohath from among the children of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ house, 3 (B)from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting.
4 (C)“This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of meeting, relating to (D)the most holy things: 5 When the camp prepares to journey, Aaron and his sons shall come, and they shall take down (E)the covering veil and cover the (F)ark of the Testimony with it. 6 Then they shall put on it a covering of badger skins, and spread over that a cloth entirely of (G)blue; and they shall insert (H)its poles.
7 “On the (I)table of showbread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the pans, the bowls, and the [a]pitchers for pouring; and the (J)showbread[b] shall be on it. 8 They shall spread over them a scarlet cloth, and cover the same with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles. 9 And they shall take a blue cloth and cover the (K)lampstand of the light, (L)with its lamps, its wick-trimmers, its trays, and all its oil vessels, with which they service it. 10 Then they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of badger skins, and put it on a carrying beam.
11 “Over (M)the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles. 12 Then they shall take all the (N)utensils of service with which they minister in the sanctuary, put them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of badger skins, and put them on a carrying beam. 13 Also they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They shall put on it all its implements with which they minister there—the firepans, the forks, the shovels, the [c]basins, and all the utensils of the altar—and they shall spread on it a covering of badger skins, and insert its poles. 15 And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then (O)the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; (P)but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die.
“(Q)These are the things in the tabernacle of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.
16 “The appointed duty of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is (R)the oil for the light, the (S)sweet incense, (T)the daily grain offering, the (U)anointing oil, the oversight of all the tabernacle, of all that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings.”
17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 18 “Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19 but do this in regard to them, that they may live and not die when they approach (V)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and [d]appoint each of them to his service and his task. 20 (W)But they shall not go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, lest they die.”
Duties of the Sons of Gershon
21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 22 “Also take a census of the sons of (X)Gershon, by their fathers’ house, by their families. 23 (Y)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, all who enter to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting. 24 This is the (Z)service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and carrying: 25 (AA)They shall carry the (AB)curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting with its covering, the covering of (AC)badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all the furnishings for their service and all that is made for these things: so shall they serve.
27 “Aaron and his sons shall [e]assign all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, all their tasks and all their service. And you shall [f]appoint to them all their tasks as their duty. 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting. And their duties shall be (AD)under the [g]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
Duties of the Sons of Merari
29 “As for the sons of (AE)Merari, you shall number them by their families and by their fathers’ house. 30 (AF)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the service to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 31 And (AG)this is (AH)what they must carry as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting: (AI)the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, 32 and the pillars around the court with their sockets, pegs, and cords, with all their furnishings and all their service; and you shall (AJ)assign to each man by name the items he must carry. 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting, under the [h]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”
Census of the Levites
34 (AK)And Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families and by their fathers’ house, 35 from thirty (AL)years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting; 36 and those who were numbered by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These were the ones who were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all who might serve in the tabernacle of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
38 And those who were numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families and by their fathers’ house, 39 from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting— 40 those who were numbered by their families, by their fathers’ house, were two thousand six hundred and thirty. 41 (AM)These are the ones who were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all who might serve in the tabernacle of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the Lord.
42 Those of the families of the sons of Merari who were numbered, by their families, by their fathers’ [i]house, 43 from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting— 44 those who were numbered by their families were three thousand two hundred. 45 These are the ones who were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered (AN)according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
46 All who were (AO)numbered of the Levites, whom Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel numbered, by their families and by their fathers’ houses, 47 (AP)from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who came to do the work of service and the work of bearing burdens in the tabernacle of meeting— 48 those who were numbered were eight thousand five hundred and eighty.
49 According to the commandment of the Lord they were numbered by the hand of Moses, (AQ)each according to his service and according to his task; thus were they numbered by him, (AR)as the Lord commanded Moses.

4 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 2 “Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 3 (A)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, all who can come on duty, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 4 This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: (B)the most holy things. 5 When the camp is to set out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down (C)the veil of the screen and cover (D)the ark of the testimony with it. 6 Then they shall put on it a covering of goatskin[a] and spread on top of that a cloth all of blue, and shall put in its (E)poles. 7 And over the (F)table of the bread of the Presence they shall spread a cloth of blue and put on it the plates, the dishes for incense, the bowls, and the flagons for the drink offering; (G)the regular showbread also shall be on it. 8 Then they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of goatskin, and shall (H)put in its poles. 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover (I)the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, its tongs, its trays, and all the vessels for oil with which it is supplied. 10 And they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of goatskin and put it on the carrying frame. 11 And over (J)the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue and cover it with a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles. 12 And they shall take all (K)the vessels of the service that are used in the sanctuary and put them in a cloth of blue and cover them with a covering of goatskin and put them on the carrying frame. 13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 And they shall put on it all the utensils of the altar, which are used for the service there, the fire pans, the forks, the shovels, and the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles. 15 And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that (L)the sons of Kohath shall come to carry these, (M)but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things of the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.
16 “And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall have charge of (N)the oil for the light, the (O)fragrant incense, (P)the regular grain offering, and (Q)the anointing oil, with the oversight of the whole tabernacle and all that is in it, of the sanctuary and its vessels.”
17 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 18 “Let not the tribe of the clans of the Kohathites be destroyed from among the Levites, 19 but deal thus with them, that they may live and not die when they come near to (R)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them each to his task and to his burden, 20 (S)but they shall not go in to look on the holy things even for a moment, lest they die.”
21 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 22 “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses and by their clans. 23 (T)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, all who can (U)come to do duty, to do service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the clans of the Gershonites, in serving and bearing burdens: 25 (V)they shall carry (W)the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with (X)its covering and the covering of goatskin that is on top of it and the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting 26 and the hangings of the court and the screen for the entrance of the gate of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords and all the equipment for their service. And they shall do all that needs to be done with regard to them. 27 All the service of the sons of the Gershonites shall be at the command of Aaron and his sons, in all that they are to carry and in all that they have to do. And you shall assign to their charge all that they are to carry. 28 This is the service of the clans of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their guard duty is to be (Y)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
29 “As for the sons of Merari, you shall list them by their clans and their fathers' houses. 30 (Z)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, everyone who can come on duty, to do the service of the tent of meeting. 31 And (AA)this is what they are charged to carry, as the whole of their service in the tent of meeting: the frames of the tabernacle, with its bars, pillars, and bases, 32 and the pillars around the court with their bases, pegs, and cords, with all their equipment and all their accessories. And you shall (AB)list by name the objects that they are required to carry. 33 This is the service of the clans of the sons of Merari, the whole of their service in the tent of meeting, (AC)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”
34 And Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of the congregation listed the sons of the Kohathites, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 35 (AD)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting; 36 and those listed by clans were 2,750. 37 (AE)This was the list of the clans of the Kohathites, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.
38 Those listed of the sons of Gershon, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 39 (AF)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty for service in the tent of meeting— 40 those listed by their clans and their fathers' houses were 2,630. 41 (AG)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Gershon, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord.
42 Those listed of the clans of the sons of Merari, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 43 (AH)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting— 44 those listed by clans were 3,200. 45 (AI)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.
46 All those who were listed of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel listed, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 47 (AJ)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come to do the service of ministry and the service of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48 those listed were 8,580. 49 According to the commandment of the Lord through Moses they were listed, (AK)each one with his task of serving or carrying. Thus they were listed by him, (AL)as the Lord commanded Moses.
