앞으로 있을 성전의 파괴

(막 13:1-31; 눅 21:5-33)

24 예수께서 성전을 나서서 얼마쯤 가셨을 때, 예수의 제자들이 예수의 곁으로 다가왔다. 그들은 성전 건물들을 가리키며 예수께 보시라고 하였다. 2 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “저 건물들을 잘 보아 두어라. 내가 분명히 말한다. 건물의 모든 돌이 무너져 내려, 저 돌들 가운데 어느 하나도 제 자리에 그대로 얹혀 있지 못할 것이다.”

3 그 뒤 예수께서 올리브 산[a]에 앉아 계실 때에, 제자들이 예수께 따로 와서 여쭈었다. “언제 그런 일들이 일어날지 말씀해 주십시오. 또 선생님께서 다시 오실 때와 세상[b]이 끝날 때에 어떤 징조가 나타나겠습니까?”

4 예수께서 대답하셨다. “누구에게도 속지 않도록 정신을 바짝 차려라. 5 앞으로 많은 사람이 내 이름으로 나타나서 ‘내가 그리스도다.’ 라고 말할 것이다. 그리고 많은 사람을 속일 것이다. 6 너희는 여기저기서 전쟁이 일어났다는 소식과 전쟁이 일어나리라는 소문을 듣게 될 것이다. 그러나 두려워하지 말아라. 이런 일들은 세상의 마지막 날이 되기 전에 일어나야 할 일들이다. 7 나라와 나라가 맞서 싸우고, 민족과 민족이 서로 맞서 싸울 것이다. 곳곳에 굶주림과 지진이 있을 것이다. 8 그런데 이런 모든 일들은 아기를 낳으려는 여자가 겪는 것과 같은 고통의 시작일 뿐이다.

9 그때가 되면 사람들은 너희를 통치자들에게 넘겨 갖은 고통을 당하게 하고, 너희를 죽이게 할 것이다. 너희는 나 때문에 온 세상 사람들에게 미움을 받을 것이다. 10 그때가 되면 많은 사람이 믿음을 잃고, 서로를 배신하고 미워할 것이다. 11 많은 거짓 예언자[c]들이 나타나서 많은 사람을 속일 것이다. 12 세상은 더욱 더 악해질 것이다. 그래서 사람들의 마음에서 사랑을 찾아보기 힘들게 될 것이다. 13 그러나 끝까지 굳세게 견디는 사람은 구원[d]을 받을 것이다. 14 하나님의 나라에 관한 기쁜 소식은 온 세상에 널리 알려져서, 모든 민족이 이 소식을 듣게 될 것이다. 그때에야 끝이 올 것이다.

15 예언자 다니엘이 말한 대로 ‘황폐를 일으키는 가증스러운 것’[e]이 성전에 서 있는 것을 보게 될 것이다. (이것을 읽는 사람은 이것이 무엇을 뜻하는지 알아야 한다.) 16 그때에 유대에 있는 사람들은 산으로 피해야 한다. 17 지붕 위에 있는 사람은 물건을 가지러 집 안으로 내려가지 말아라. 18 들에 있는 사람은 겉옷을 가지러 집으로 가지 말아라. 19 이런 때 아기 밴 여자들이나 젖먹이가 딸린 여자들은 불행하다. 20 너희는 겨울이나 안식일에 이런 일을 당해 피난 가는 일이 없도록 기도하여라. 21 그때가 되면 무섭고 견디기 힘든 어려움이 닥칠 것이기 때문이다. 이렇게 큰 어려움은, 세상이 생긴 때부터 이제까지 없었던 일이고 앞으로도 없을 것이다. 22 하나님께서 당신이 선택한 사람들을 위하여 그 고생하는 기간을 줄여 주지 않으시면, 살아 남을 사람이 하나도 없을 것이다. 23 그때에 누가 너희에게 ‘보라! 그리스도가 여기 있다!’ 또는 ‘아니, 여기 있다!’ 하더라도, 믿지 말아라. 24 거짓 그리스도와 거짓 예언자[f]들이 나타나서 큰 표적들과 기적[g]들을 행하여, 할 수만 있다면 하나님께서 택하신 사람들까지도 홀리려 할 것이다. 25 앞으로 일어날 일을 내가 너희에게 미리 일러 두는 것이다.

26 그러므로 ‘그리스도가 저기 광야[h]에 있다!’ 라는 말을 듣더라도, 그리스도를 찾으러 광야로 나가지 말아라. 또 ‘그리스도가 저 골방에 있다!’ 하더라도, 그 말을 믿지 말아라. 27 하늘에서 번개가 번쩍이는 것을 어디서든 볼 수 있듯이 사람의 아들도 그렇게 올 것이다. 28 주검이 있는 곳에는 독수리가 모여드는 법이다. 내가 오는 것도 그와 같이 똑똑히 볼 수 있을 것이다.

인자 예수가 다시 올 때

(막 13:24-27; 눅 21:25-28)

29 그 고난의 시기가 지나면 곧 이런 일이 일어날 것이다.

‘해는 어두워지고
달은 빛을 내지 않을 것이다.
별들이 하늘에서 떨어지고
하늘의 천체들이 흔들릴 것이다.’[i]

30 그때가 되면 하늘에는 사람의 아들이 오는 것을 알려 주는 표적이 나타날 것이다. 땅에 있는 온 민족이 슬피 울 것이다. 그들은 사람의 아들이 하늘의 구름을 타고 오는 것을 볼 것이다. 사람의 아들은 권능을 떨치며 영광에 싸여 올 것이다. 31 그리고 사람의 아들은 크게 울려 퍼지는 나팔 소리와 함께 천사들을 세상 곳곳에 보내어, 그가 택한 사람들을 불러 모을 것이다.

32 무화과나무에 대한 이야기를 듣고 배워라. 무화과나무의 가지가 연해지고 새 잎이 나기 시작하면 여름이 다가오는 것을 알 수 있다. 33 내가 일어날 것이라고 말하는 이 일들도 마찬가지이다. 이 일들이 모두 일어나는 것을 보거든, 너희는 사람의 아들이 너희의 문 앞에 다가온 줄 알아라. 34 내가 분명히 말한다. 이 모든 일은 이 시대 사람들이 살아 있을 때에 일어날 것이다. 35 하늘과 땅과 온 세상이 없어져도, 내 말은 결코 사라지지 않을 것이다.

하나님만이 마지막 때를 아신다

(막 13:32-37; 눅 17:26-30, 34-36)

36 그날과 그 시간이 언제 올지 아무도 모른다. 하늘의 천사들도 모르고 아들도 모른다. 오로지 아버지만이 아신다. 37 사람의 아들이 올 때에도 노아의 시대와 같은 일이 벌어질 것이다. 38 홍수가 나기 전에 살던 사람들은, 노아가 방주에 들어가는 날까지 먹고 마시고 장가들고 시집가고 있었다. 39 그들은 이렇게 아무것도 모른 채 있다가 홍수를 만나 휩쓸려 갔다. 사람의 아들이 올 때에도 이와 같을 것이다. 40 그때에 두 사람이 함께 밭에서 일하고 있다면, 한 사람은 데려가고 다른 한 사람은 버려 둘 것이다. 41 두 여자가 맷돌질을 하고 있다면, 한 여자는 데려가고 한 여자는 버려 둘 것이다.

42 그러므로 항상 깨어 있어라. 너희는 너희 주께서 언제 오실지 알지 못하기 때문이다. 43 이것을 알아두어라. 도둑이 언제 올지를 안다면, 집주인은 도둑이 자기 집을 뚫고 들어오지 못하게 막을 것이다. 44 그러니 너희도 준비하고 있어야 한다. 사람의 아들은 너희들이 생각지도 못한 때에 올 것이다.

선한 종과 악한 종

(눅 12:41-48)

45 어떤 주인이 길을 떠나며, 한 종에게 다른 종들을 다스리고 양식을 나누어 주는 일을 맡겼다면, 어떻게 하는 사람이 지혜롭고 믿을 만한 종이겠느냐? 46 자기가 맡은 일에 책임을 다하고 있다가 주인을 맞는 종이 아니겠느냐? 주인이 돌아와서 종이 맡은 일을 잘 하고 있는 것을 보면 그 종은 복을 받을 것이다. 47 내가 너희에게 분명히 말한다. 주인은 그 종에게 자기의 모든 재산을 맡길 것이다. 48 그러나 그 종이 악한 사람이라면 어떻게 하겠느냐? 그는 ‘우리 주인이 오래 떠나 계시네.’ 라고 생각하고, 49 자기가 맡은 종들을 때리고, 술친구들과 어울려 먹고 마실 것이다. 50 그러면 그 종의 주인은, 종이 생각지도 않은 날에, 뜻밖의 시각에 돌아와서 그의 모든 행실을 보게 될 것이다. 51 주인은 그 종을 때리고, 위선자들이 벌 받는 곳으로 내쫓을 것이다. 그곳에서 그는 슬피 울며 이를 갈 것이다.

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(B) every one will be thrown down.”

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(C) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(D) and of the end of the age?”(E)

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(F) 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(G) 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(H) There will be famines(I) and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(J) and put to death,(K) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(L) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(M) will appear and deceive many people.(N) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(O) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(P) will be preached in the whole world(Q) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(R) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[a](S) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(T) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(U) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(V)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(W) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(X) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(Y) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(Z) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(AA) of the Son of Man.(AB) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(AC)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
    and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[b](AD)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn(AE) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(AF) with power and great glory.[d] 31 And he will send his angels(AG) with a loud trumpet call,(AH) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[e] is near, right at the door.(AI) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(AJ) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AK)

The Day and Hour Unknown(AL)(AM)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.(AN) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(AO) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(AP) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(AQ) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(AR) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(AS)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(AT) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(AU) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(AV) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(AW) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(AX) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(AY) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(AZ) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(BA)

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

24 As Jesus left and was going out of the temple,(A) his disciples(B) came up and called his attention to its buildings. 2 He replied to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (C)

4 Jesus replied to them, “Watch out that no one deceives(D) you. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.(E) 6 You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[a](F) and earthquakes in various places.(G) 8 All these events are the beginning of labor pains.(H)

Persecutions Predicted

9 “Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.(I) 10 Then many will fall away, betray one another, and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets(J) will rise up and deceive many. 12 Because lawlessness(K) will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world[b] as a testimony to all nations,(L) and then the end will come.(M)

The Great Tribulation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation,[c] spoken of by the prophet Daniel,(N) standing in the holy place”(O) (let the reader understand), 16 “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 A man on the housetop[d] must not come down to get things out of his house,(P) 18 and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat. 19 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 20 Pray that your escape may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For at that time there will be great distress,[e](Q) the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again. 22 Unless those days were cut short, no one would[f] be saved. But those days will be cut short because of the elect.(R)

23 “If anyone tells you then, ‘See, here is the Messiah!’(S) or, ‘Over here!’ do not believe it.(T) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray,(U) if possible, even the elect. 25 Take note: I have told you in advance. 26 So if they tell you, ‘See, he’s in the wilderness!’ don’t go out; or, ‘See, he’s in the storerooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.(V) 28 Wherever the carcass is, there the vultures[g] will gather.(W)

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediately after the distress(X) of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth[h] will mourn;[i] and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.(Y) 31 He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet,(Z) and they will gather his elect from the four winds,(AA) from one end of the sky to the other.

The Parable of the Fig Tree

32 “Learn this lesson(AB) from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, recognize[j] that he[k] is near—at the door.(AC) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.(AD) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away,(AE) but my words will never pass away.(AF)

No One Knows the Day or Hour

36 “Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels of heaven nor the Son[l] —except the Father alone.(AG) 37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.(AH) 39 They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left.(AI) 42 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day[m] your Lord is coming.(AJ) 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time[n] the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.(AK) 44 This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.(AL)

Faithful Service to Christ

45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant,(AM) whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time?(AN) 46 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes.(AO) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and starts to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards,(AP) 50 that servant’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
