3 그렇다면, 유대 사람에게 어떤 유리한 점이 있습니까? 할례에 어떤 이로움이 있습니까? 2 예, 여러 모로 유리한 점이 많이 있습니다! 첫째는, 하나님께서 그들에게 다름 아닌 당신의 말씀을 맡기셨다는 것입니다. 3 어떤 유대 사람들이 하나님에 대한 신의를 저버렸다고 합시다. 그러나 그렇다고 하여, 하나님께서도 신의를 저버리시겠습니까? 4 결코 그럴 수 없습니다. 모든 사람이 거짓말쟁이라 하더라도 하나님께서는 진실하십니다. 성경[a]에
“하나님
당신이 말씀하시면
당신이 옳으시다는 것이 증명되고
당신이 법정에 서시면

5 우리가 저지르는 불의가 하나님의 의를 더욱 분명하게 드러냅니다. 그렇다고 해서, 우리에게 진노하시는 하나님이 옳지 않다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? (나는 지금 사람들이 논쟁하는 방식을 빌려 말하고 있습니다.) 6 결코 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 벌하실 수 없다면, 어떻게 세상을 심판하실 수 있겠습니까?
7 어떤 사람은 이런 식으로 말할지 모르겠습니다. “나의 허위가 하나님의 진실하심을 더욱 드러내서 그분께 더 큰 영광이 돌아간다면, 어찌하여 내가 여전히 죄인으로 정죄 받아야 하는가?” 8 그렇다면 아예 “선한 결과를 얻기 위해서, 악한 일을 하자.” 라는 말이 나올 만도 하지 않습니까? (사실 우리가 그런 말을 한다고 하면서 나를 헐뜯는 사람들이 있습니다.) 그렇게 말하는 사람들은 정죄를 받아 마땅합니다.
모든 사람이 죄인이다
9 그렇다면 우리가 무슨 결론을 내려야겠습니까? 우리 유대 사람이 이방 사람보다 나은 점이 있습니까? 결코 없습니다. 우리는 이미 유대 사람이나 이방 사람[b]이나 똑같이 모두 죄의 다스림 아래 있다고 말하였습니다. 10 성경에도 이런 말씀이 있습니다.
“의로운 사람은 아무도 없다. 단 한 사람도 없다.
11 하나님과 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫는 사람도 없고
하나님을 찾는[c] 사람도 없다.
12 모두가 주께 등을 돌리고
다 같이 쓸모없는 인간이 되어 버렸다.
선한 일을 하는 사람은 없다.
단 한 사람도 없다.”(B)
13 “그들의 목구멍은 열린 무덤이며
그들의 혀는 거짓말을 일삼는다.”(C)
“그들의 입술에는 독사의 독이 흐른다.”(D)
14 “그들의 입은 저주와 미움의 말로 가득 차 있다.”(E)
15 “그들의 발은 피 흘리는 일에 빠르고
16 간 데마다 파괴와 비참을 남긴다.
17 그들은 평화의 길을 알지도 못한다.”(F)
18 “그들의 눈에는 하나님을 두려워하는 기색이 없다.”(G)
19 우리는, 율법 아래 있는 사람들은 그 율법이 명하는 모든 것의 지배를 받는다는 것을 압니다. 그렇기 때문에 아무도 자랑하거나 핑계를 댈 수 없으며,[d] 온 세상 사람이 하나님 앞에서 심판을 받게 된 것입니다. 20 어느 누구도 율법을 지키는 것으로는, 하나님 앞에서 의롭다는 판결을 받을 수 없습니다. 우리는 율법을 통해서 죄가 무엇인지 알 수 있을 따름입니다.
하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 의롭게 하시는가?
21 그러나 이제 율법과는 상관없이 하나님의 의가 밝히 알려졌습니다. 그것은 율법과 예언자들이 증언하고 있는 것입니다. 22 이 하나님의 의는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해서[e] 모든 믿는 사람을 구원합니다. 유대 사람과 이방 사람 사이에 아무런 차별이 없습니다. 23 모든 사람이 죄를 지어, 하나님께서 주셨던 본래의 영광스러운 모습에 미치지 못하기 때문입니다. 24 그러나 이제는 하나님께서 모든 사람을 받아 주셨습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 거저 주시는 은혜의 선물입니다. 하나님께서는 그리스도 예수를 통하여 그들을 죄에서 해방시켜 주심으로써, 그들을 모두 받아 주셨습니다. 25 하나님께서는 죄를 용서해 주시려고 그리스도 예수를 희생 제물로 내주셨습니다. 그리하여 예수께서는 죽임을 당하시고 피를 흘리셨습니다. 그 덕분으로 사람은 믿음을 통하여 죄를 용서받습니다. 하나님께서 이렇게 하신 것은, 그리스도가 하나님의 의를 나타내는 확실한 징표가 되게 하시려는 것이었습니다. 26 그렇습니다. 하나님께서는, 그리스도가 지금 이때에 하나님 자신의 의를 나타내는 분명한 징표가 되게 하셨습니다. 이 모든 일에 있어서 하나님께서 뜻하시는 것은, 예수를 믿는 믿음으로[f] 사는 사람을 받아 주시는 바로 그 행위에 있어서 당신께서 공정하시려는 것입니다.
27 그렇다면 자랑할 근거가 남아 있습니까? 아닙니다. 전혀 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니다! 무슨 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니까? 행위를 요구하는 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니까? 아닙니다. 오히려 믿음의 관점에서 보는 법에 따라 자랑할 수 없게 되었습니다. 28 우리는 사람이, 율법이 요구하는 행위와는 상관없이, 믿음으로 받아 주심을 얻는다고 확신하기 때문입니다. 29 하나님은 유대 사람만의 하나님이십니까? 이방 사람의 하나님도 되시지 않습니까? 예, 그분은 이방 사람의 하나님도 되십니다. 30 하나님께서 믿음으로 유대 사람[g]을 받아 주신다면, 그리고 그분이 다만 한 분이신 하나님이시라면, 틀림없이 이방 사람[h]도 믿음을 통하여 받아 주실 것입니다. 31 그렇다면, 우리가 이 믿음으로 율법을 없애 버립니까? 결코 아닙니다! 오히려 우리는 율법을 든든하게 세웁니다.

God’s Judgment Defended
3 What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? 2 Much in every way! Chiefly because (A)to them were committed the [a]oracles of God. 3 For what if (B)some did not believe? (C)Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 (D)Certainly not! Indeed, let (E)God be [b]true but (F)every man a liar. As it is written:
(G)“That You may be justified in Your words,
And may overcome when You are judged.”
5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (H)(I speak as a man.) 6 Certainly not! For then (I)how will God judge the world?
7 For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say, (J)“Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their [c]condemnation is just.
All Have Sinned(K)
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that (L)they are all under sin.
10 As it is written:
(M)“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their(N) throat is an open [d]tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
(O)“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose(P) mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their(Q) feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There(R) is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 Now we know that whatever (S)the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that (T)every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become [e]guilty before God. 20 Therefore (U)by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
God’s Righteousness Through Faith
21 But now (V)the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, (W)being witnessed by the Law (X)and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all [f]and on all who believe. For (Y)there is no difference; 23 for (Z)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified [g]freely (AA)by His grace (AB)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth (AC)as a [h]propitiation (AD)by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over (AE)the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Boasting Excluded
27 (AF)Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude (AG)that a man is [i]justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since (AH)there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

God's Righteousness Upheld
3 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, (A)the Jews were entrusted with (B)the oracles of God. 3 (C)What if some were unfaithful? (D)Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! (E)Let God be true though (F)every one were a liar, as it is written,
5 But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict (I)wrath on us? ((J)I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could (K)God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, (L)why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not (M)do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.
No One Is Righteous
9 What then? Are we Jews[a] any better off?[b] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both (N)Jews and (O)Greeks, are (P)under sin, 10 as it is written:
(Q)“None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
13 (R)“Their throat is (S)an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
(T)“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14 (U)“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 (V)“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 in their paths are ruin and misery,
17 and (W)the way of peace they have not known.”
18 (X)“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 Now we know that whatever (Y)the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, (Z)so that every mouth may be stopped, and (AA)the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For (AB)by works of the law no human being[c] will be justified in his sight, since (AC)through the law comes knowledge of sin.
The Righteousness of God Through Faith
21 But now (AD)the righteousness of God (AE)has been manifested apart from the law, although (AF)the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God (AG)through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. (AH)For there is no distinction: 23 for (AI)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 (AJ)and are justified (AK)by his grace as a gift, (AL)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God (AM)put forward as (AN)a propitiation (AO)by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in (AP)his divine forbearance he had passed over (AQ)former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 (AR)Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith (AS)apart from works of the law. 29 Or (AT)is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since (AU)God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and (AV)the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
