백인대장의 종을 고쳐 주시다

(마 8:5-13; 요 4:43-54)

예수께서 사람들에게 이런 말씀을 다 하신 뒤에 가버나움[a]으로 가셨다. 거기에 어떤 백인대장[b]이 있었다. 그 백인대장의 종 한 사람이 병들어 거의 죽게 되었다. 그 종은 백인대장이 매우 아끼는 종이었다. 백인대장은 예수에 관한 이야기를 듣고 유대 사람 장로[c] 몇 사람을 보냈다. 예수께서 오셔서 자기 종을 살려 달라고 청하려는 것이었다. 장로들은 예수께 와서 간절히 청하였다. “백인대장은 선생님께서 도와주실 만한 사람입니다. 그는 우리 민족을 사랑하고, 우리에게 회당도 지어 주었습니다.”

그래서 예수께서 장로들과 함께 가셨다. 그 집 가까이에 이르셨을 때에, 백인대장은 친구들을 보내어 예수께 이렇게 말씀드리게 하였다. “주님, 주님께서 수고스럽게 일부러 오시지 않아도 됩니다. 저는 주님을 제 집에 모실 만한 자격이 없습니다. 그래서 저는 주님을 뵈러 갈 엄두도 내지 못하였습니다. 주님께서 말씀만 해 주십시오. 그러면 제 종이 나을 것입니다. 제 위로는 상관들이 있고 제 아래로는 부하들이 있습니다. 그래서 권한이 무엇인지 알고 있습니다. 제가 이 부하에게 ‘가라!’ 고 하면 갑니다. 그리고 저 부하에게 ‘오라!’ 고 하면 옵니다. 그리고 제 종에게 ‘이것을 하여라!’ 고 하면 합니다.”

예수께서 이 말을 들으시고 감탄하셨다. 예수께서 뒤따라오던 사람들을 돌아보고 말씀하셨다 “내가 너희 모두에게 이르는데, 이스라엘[d]에서도 이런 믿음을 본 일이 없다.”

10 그 친구들이 백인대장의 집으로 돌아가 보니, 종은 벌써 나아 있었다.

죽었던 사람을 살리시다

11 조금 뒤에 예수께서 나인이라는 마을로 가셨다. 예수의 제자들과 다른 많은 사람들이 따라갔다. 12 예수께서 성문 가까이 가셨을 때 장례 행렬이 다가오고 있었다. 죽은 사람은 어떤 홀어미의 외아들이었다. 그 고을의 많은 사람이 장례 행렬을 따르고 있었다. 13 주께서는 그 어머니를 보고 불쌍한 마음이 드셨다. 그래서 그 어머니에게 말씀하셨다. “울지 말아라.”

14 예수께서 상여로 다가가 손을 대시자, 상여를 메고 가던 사람들이 걸음을 멈추었다. 예수께서 죽은 젊은이를 향해 말씀하셨다. “젊은이여, 일어나거라!” 15 그러자 죽었던 젊은이가 일어나 앉아 말을 하기 시작하였다. 예수께서 그 젊은이를 어머니에게 돌려주셨다.

16 사람들은 모두 두려워하며 하나님을 찬양하였다. “우리에게 위대한 예언자가 나타나셨다. 하나님께서 당신의 백성을 도우려고 오셨다!”

17 예수에 대한 소식은 유대 지방과 그 둘레에 있는 모든 지역으로 퍼져 나갔다.

세례자 요한이 예수께 여쭙다

(마 11:2-19)

18 요한의 제자들이 이 모든 일을 요한에게 이야기하였다. 요한이 제자들 가운데 두 사람을 불러, 19 주께 가서 이렇게 여쭈어 보라고 하였다. “당신이 오시기로 되어 있는 그분이십니까, 아니면 저희가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?”

20 그들이 예수께 와서 말하였다. “세례자 요한이 선생님께 여쭈어 보라고 저희를 보냈습니다. 선생님께서 오시기로 되어 있는 그분이신지, 아니면 저희가 다른 분을 기다려야 하는지를 말씀해 주십시오.”

21 마침 그때에 예수께서는 질병과 고통과 악령으로 시달리는 많은 사람을 고쳐 주시고, 많은 눈먼 사람들을 보게 해 주셨다. 22 예수께서 대답하셨다. “요한에게 가서 너희가 보고 들은 것을 보고하여라. 눈먼 사람이 보고, 다리 저는 사람이 걷고, 나병환자들이 낫고, 귀먹은 사람이 듣고, 죽은 사람이 다시 살아난다. 그리고 가난한 사람들에게 기쁜 소식이 전파되고 있다. 23 내가 하는 이런 일 때문에 나를 거부하지 않는 사람은 복이 있다.”

24 요한이 보낸 사람들이 돌아간 뒤에, 예수께서 사람들에게 요한에 대하여 말씀하셨다. “너희가 무엇을 보러 광야에 나갔더냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대[e]를 보러 갔었느냐? 25 아니면 무엇을 보러 갔었느냐? 좋은 옷을 입은 사람을 보러 갔었느냐? 좋은 옷을 입고 사치스럽게 사는 사람들은 궁전에 있다. 26 그러면 너희는 무엇을 보러 갔었느냐? 예언자를 보러 갔었느냐? 그렇다. 내가 너희에게 말한다. 요한은 예언자보다 더 위대한 인물이다. 27 성경에는 요한을 두고 이렇게 쓰여 있다.

‘보라
내가 너보다 앞서
내 심부름꾼을 보내리니
그가 네 앞에서 네 길을 닦을 것이다.’(A)

28 내가 너희에게 말한다. 여자의 몸에서 태어난 사람 가운데 요한보다 더 위대한 사람은 없다. 그러나 하나님 나라에서 가장 낮은 사람도 요한보다 위대하다.

29 (요한의 선포를 들은 모든 사람은, 심지어 세무원[f]들까지도 하나님의 길이 옳다고 인정하였다. 이들은 요한의 세례를 받았기 때문이었다. 30 그러나 바리새파 사람들과 율법 선생들은 요한의 세례를 받지 않음으로써, 하나님께서 자기들을 위해 세워 놓으신 계획을 거부하였다.)

31 그러니 내가 이 세대 사람을 무엇에 비길까? 이 사람들이 무엇과 같다고 할 수 있을까? 32 이 세대 사람은 장터에 앉아 있는 아이들과 같다. 한 떼의 아이들이 다른 떼의 아이들에게 이렇게 말한다.

‘우리가 너희를 위해 피리를 불어도
너희는 춤추지 않았고
우리가 슬픈 장송곡을 노래하여도
너희는 울지 않았다.’

33 너희는 세례자 요한이 와서 밥도 먹지 않고 술도 마시지 않자, ‘요한은 귀신 들렸다.’ 라고 말하였다. 34 그러나 사람의 아들이 와서 먹고 마시자, ‘보라, 저 사람은 먹보요 술꾼이요 세무원들과 죄인들의 친구이다.’ 라고 말한다. 35 그러나 하나님의 지혜가 옳다는 것은, 지혜를 받아들인 사람들에 의해서 증명된다.”

바리새파 사람 시몬

36 어떤 바리새파 사람이 예수께 음식을 대접하려고 자기 집으로 초대하였다. 예수께서 그 사람의 집에 들어가 상 앞에 앉으셨다. 37 그 마을에는 죄 많은 삶을 살아온 여자가 한 사람 살고 있었다. 그 여자는 예수께서 바리새파 사람의 집에 초대된 것을 알고는 향유[g]가 담긴 옥합[h]을 가지고 그 집으로 갔다. 38 여자는 예수의 뒤로 가서 발치에 서서 울며 눈물로 예수의 발을 적셨다. 여자는 자기 머리카락으로 예수의 발을 닦고, 예수의 발에 입을 맞추며 향유를 부었다. 39 예수를 청했던 바리새파 사람이 그것을 보고 속으로 생각하였다. “저 사람이 예언자라면, 자기에게 손댄 저 여자가 죄인이라는 것도 알았을 것이다.”

40 예수께서 그 사람에게 말씀하셨다. “시몬아, 네게 할 말이 있다.”

시몬이 대답하였다. “예, 말씀하십시오, 선생님.”

41 “어떤 돈놀이꾼에게 빚진 사람이 둘 있었다. 한 사람은 오백 데나리온[i]을 빚지고, 또 한 사람은 오십 데나리온을 빚졌다. 42 두 사람 다 빚을 갚을 돈이 없어서 돈놀이꾼이 두 사람의 빚을 없는 것으로 해 주었다. 그러면 두 사람 가운데 누가 그를 더 사랑하겠느냐?”

43 시몬이 대답하였다. “더 많은 빚을 면제 받은 사람이겠지요.”

예수께서 말씀하셨다. “옳은 말이다.” 44 그리고 그 여자를 돌아보시며 시몬에게 말씀하셨다. “이 여자를 보라. 내가 네 집에 들어왔을 때, 너는 내게 발 씻을 물도 주지 않았다. 그러나 이 여자는 눈물로 내 발을 씻어 주고 자기 머리카락으로 닦아 주었다. 45 너는 내게 입 맞추지 않았지만, 이 여자는 내가 들어서는 순간부터 지금까지 계속하여 내 발에 입 맞추었다. 46 너는 내 머리에 기름을 발라 주지 않았지만, 이 여자는 내 발에 향유를 발라 주었다. 47 그러므로 내가 분명히 말한다. 이 여자는 많은 죄를 다 용서받았다. 이 여자가 이렇게 큰 사랑을 보이는 것으로 보아 분명한 사실이다. 그러나 용서받은 것이 적은 사람은 적게 사랑한다.”

48 그리고 그 여자에게 말씀하셨다. “네 죄는 용서받았다.”

49 그러자 예수와 함께 음식을 먹고 있던 사람들이 자기들끼리 수군거리기 시작하였다. “이 사람이 누구이기에 죄를 용서하기까지 하는가?”

50 예수께서 그 여자에게 말씀하셨다. “네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다. 평안히 가거라.”

The Faith of the Centurion(A)

When Jesus had finished saying all this(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(D)

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(E) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(F) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe(G) and praised God.(H) “A great prophet(I) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(J) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(K)

Jesus and John the Baptist(L)

18 John’s(M) disciples(N) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(O) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(P) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(Q) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way before you.’[b](R)

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(S) is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(T) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(U) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(V) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(W) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(X)(Y)

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(Z) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[c] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(AA) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(AB) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(AC) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(AD)

49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(AE) go in peace.”(AF)

Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But (C)say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under (D)authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.

When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well [a]who had been sick.

Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had (E)compassion on her and said to her, (F)“Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, (G)arise.” 15 So he who was dead (H)sat up and began to speak. And He (I)presented him to his mother.

16 (J)Then fear [b]came upon all, and they (K)glorified God, saying, (L)“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, (M)“God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(N)

18 (O)Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to [c]Jesus, saying, “Are You (P)the Coming One, or [d]do we look for another?”

20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of [e]infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

22 (Q)Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: (R)that the blind (S)see, the lame (T)walk, the lepers are (U)cleansed, the deaf (V)hear, the dead are raised, (W)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not [f]offended because of Me.”

24 (X)When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written:

(Y)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is [g]not a (Z)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors [h]justified God, (AA)having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and [i]lawyers rejected (AB)the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

31 [j]And the Lord said, (AC)“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not weep.’

33 For (AD)John the Baptist came (AE)neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come (AF)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [k]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 (AG)But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (AH)Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, (AI)“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred (AJ)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no (AK)water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no (AL)kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 (AM)You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 (AN)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

48 Then He said to her, (AO)“Your sins are forgiven.”

49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, (AP)“Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Then He said to the woman, (AQ)“Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

The Healing of a Centurion’s Slave.(A) [a]When he had finished all his words to the people, he entered Capernaum.[b] A centurion[c] there had a slave who was ill and about to die, and he was valuable to him. When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save the life of his slave. They approached Jesus and strongly urged him to come, saying, “He deserves to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us.” And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.[d] Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and, turning, said to the crowd following him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10 When the messengers returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

Raising of the Widow’s Son.[e] 11 (B)Soon afterward he journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.(C) 13 When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.(D) 16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, “A great prophet has arisen in our midst,” and “God has visited his people.”(E) 17 This report about him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region.

The Messengers from John the Baptist.[f] 18 (F)The disciples of John told him about all these things. John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”(G) 20 When the men came to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’” 21 At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. 22 And he said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.(H) 23 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”[g]

Jesus’ Testimony to John. 24 [h]When the messengers of John had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John.(I) “What did you go out to the desert to see—a reed swayed by the wind? 25 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine garments? Those who dress luxuriously and live sumptuously are found in royal palaces. 26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.(J) 27 This is the one about whom scripture says:

‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
    he will prepare your way before you.’(K)

28 I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 (L)(All the people who listened, including the tax collectors, and who were baptized with the baptism of John, acknowledged the righteousness of God; 30 but the Pharisees and scholars of the law, who were not baptized by him, rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

31 [i]“Then to what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?(M) 32 They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another,

‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance.
    We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(N) 35 But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

The Pardon of the Sinful Woman.[j] 36 (O)A Pharisee invited him to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table.[k] 37 Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee.(P) Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment,(Q) 38 she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages[l] and the other owed fifty. 42 Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. 47 So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love.[m] But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” 48 He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(R) 49 The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”(S) 50 But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

  5. 7:11–17 In the previous incident Jesus’ power was displayed for a Gentile whose servant was dying; in this episode it is displayed toward a widowed mother whose only son has already died. Jesus’ power over death prepares for his reply to John’s disciples in Lk 7:22: “the dead are raised.” This resuscitation in alluding to the prophet Elijah’s resurrection of the only son of a widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs 7:8–24) leads to the reaction of the crowd: “A great prophet has arisen in our midst” (Lk 7:16).
  6. 7:18–23 In answer to John’s question, Are you the one who is to come?—a probable reference to the return of the fiery prophet of reform, Elijah, “before the day of the Lord comes, the great and terrible day” (Mal 3:23)—Jesus responds that his role is rather to bring the blessings spoken of in Is 61:1 to the oppressed and neglected of society (Lk 7:22; cf. Lk 4:18).
  7. 7:23 Blessed is the one who takes no offense at me: this beatitude is pronounced on the person who recognizes Jesus’ true identity in spite of previous expectations of what “the one who is to come” would be like.
  8. 7:24–30 In his testimony to John, Jesus reveals his understanding of the relationship between them: John is the precursor of Jesus (Lk 7:27); John is the messenger spoken of in Mal 3:1 who in Mal 3:23 is identified as Elijah. Taken with the previous episode, it can be seen that Jesus identifies John as precisely the person John envisioned Jesus to be: the Elijah who prepares the way for the coming of the day of the Lord.

  10. 7:36–50 In this story of the pardoning of the sinful woman Luke presents two different reactions to the ministry of Jesus. A Pharisee, suspecting Jesus to be a prophet, invites Jesus to a festive banquet in his house, but the Pharisee’s self-righteousness leads to little forgiveness by God and consequently little love shown toward Jesus. The sinful woman, on the other hand, manifests a faith in God (Lk 7:50) that has led her to seek forgiveness for her sins, and because so much was forgiven, she now overwhelms Jesus with her display of love; cf. the similar contrast in attitudes in Lk 18:9–14. The whole episode is a powerful lesson on the relation between forgiveness and love.
  11. 7:36 Reclined at table: the normal posture of guests at a banquet. Other oriental banquet customs alluded to in this story include the reception by the host with a kiss (Lk 7:45), washing the feet of the guests (Lk 7:44), and the anointing of the guests’ heads (Lk 7:46).
  12. 7:41 Days’ wages: one denarius is the normal daily wage of a laborer.
  13. 7:47 Her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love: literally, “her many sins have been forgiven, seeing that she has loved much.” That the woman’s sins have been forgiven is attested by the great love she shows toward Jesus. Her love is the consequence of her forgiveness. This is also the meaning demanded by the parable in Lk 7:41–43.
