항상 기도하라

18 예수님은 제자들에게 언제나 기도하고 실망하지 말아야 할 것을 가르치시기 위해서 비유를 들어 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

“어떤 도시에 하나님을 두려워하지 않고 사람을 무시하는 한 재판관이 있었다.

그리고 그 도시에는 한 과부도 있었는데 그녀는 자주 재판관에게 찾아가서 자기 원수를 갚아 달라고 애원하였다.

재판관은 얼마 동안 그녀의 간청을 들어주지 않고 있다가 마침내 이렇게 중얼거렸다. ‘내가 하나님을 두려워하지 않고 사람을 무시하는데도

이 과부가 계속 나를 성가시게 하니 내가 그녀의 간청을 들어주어야겠다. 그렇지 않으면 이 여자가 계속 와서 나를 괴롭힐 것이다.’ ”

그러고서 주님은 다시 말씀하셨다. “너희는 이 옳지 못한 재판관의 말에 귀를 기울여라.

하나님께서 직접 택하신 백성이 밤낮 부르짖는데 원수를 갚아 주시지 않고 계속 그대로 두실 것 같으냐?

내가 너희에게 말하지만 하나님이 속히 그들의 원수를 갚아 주실 것이다. 그러나 내가 다시 올 때 세상에서 믿음을 찾아보겠느냐?”

또 예수님은 자기가 의롭다고 믿고 다른 사람을 멸시하는 사람들에게 이런 비유로 말씀하셨다.

10 “두 사람이 기도하려고 성전에 올라갔는데 하나는 바리새파 사람이었고 또 하나는 세무원이었다.

11 바리새파 사람은 따로 서서 ‘하나님, 나는 다른 사람들처럼 사기꾼도 아니고 정직하지 못하거나 간음하는 사람도 아니며 또 이 세무원과도 같지 않음을 감사합니다.

12 나는 일 주일에 두 번씩 금식하며 모든 수입의 십일조를 바치고 있습니다’ 하고 기도했으나

13 세무원은 멀리 서서 감히 하늘을 우러러보지도 못하고 가슴을 치며 ‘하나님, 이 죄인을 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오’ 하고 기도하였다.

14 내가 너희에게 말하지만 이 세무원이 저 바리새파 사람보다 의롭다는 인정을 받고 집으로 돌아갔다. 누구든 지 자기를 높이는 사람은 낮아지고 자기를 낮추는 사람은 높아질 것이다.”

15 사람들이 손을 얹어 축복해 달라고 어린 아이들을 예수님께 데려오자 제자들이 보고 그 사람들을 꾸짖었다.

16 그러나 예수님은 그 어린 아이들을 가까이 부르시고 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “어린 아이들이 나에게 오는 것을 막지 말아라. 하나님의 나라는 이런 어린 아이와 같은 사람들의 것이다.

17 내가 분명히 말해 둔다. 누구든지 하나님의 나라를 어린 아이와 같이 받아들이지 않는 사람은 그 나라에 절대로 들어가지 못할 것이다.”

영원한 생명을 얻으려면

18 [a]유대인 지도자가 예수님께 “선한 선생님, 제가 무엇을 해야 영원한 생명을 얻겠습니까?” 하고 물었다.

19 그래서 예수님이 대답하셨다. “왜 나를 선하다고 하느냐? 선한 분은 하나님 한 분뿐이시다.

20 너는 [b]‘간음하지 말아라. 살인하지 말아라. 도둑질하지 말아라. 거짓 증언하지 말아라. 네 부모를 공경하라’ 고 한 계명들을 알고 있겠지.”

21 그러자 그는 “이 모든 것을 어려서부터 다 지켜왔습니다” 하였다.

22 예수님은 이 말을 들으시고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “아직도 네게 한 가지 부족한 것이 있다. 너는 재산을 다 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나눠 주어라. 그러면 네가 하늘에서 보물을 얻을 것이다. 그리고 와서 나를 따르라.”

23 그러나 그는 큰 부자였으므로 이 말씀을 듣고 몹시 근심하였다.

24 그래서 예수님은 그를 보시며 말씀하셨다. “재산이 많은 사람은 하나님의 나라에 들어가기가 정말 어렵다.

25 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 낙타가 바늘귀로 통과하는 것이 더 쉽다.”

26 사람들이 이 말씀을 듣고 “그렇다면 누가 구원받을 수 있겠습니까?” 하고 묻자

27 예수님이 “사람의 힘으로는 할 수 없지만 하나님께서는 다 하실 수 있다” 하고 대답하셨다.

28 그때 베드로가 예수님께 “우리는 모든 것을 버리고 주님을 따랐습니다” 하자

29 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내가 분명히 말한다. 하나님의 나라를 위해 집이나 아내나 형제나 부모나 자녀를 버린 사람은

30 이 세상에서 여러 갑절로 받고, 오는 세상에서는 영원한 생명을 얻을 것이다.”

31 예수님은 열두 제자를 따로 데리고 가시면서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “우리가 지금 예루살렘으로 올라가고 있으니 [c]내게 대하여 예언자들이 기록한 모든 일이 이루어질 것이다.

32 내가 이방인들의 손에 넘어갈 것이며 그들은 나를 조롱하고 모욕하고 침 뱉고

33 채찍질한 후 죽일 것이다. 그러나 나는 3일 만에 다시 살아날 것이다.”

34 제자들에게는 이 말씀의 뜻이 감추어져 있었으므로 그들은 예수님이 하시는 말씀을 하나도 이해하지 못하였다.

35 예수님이 여리고에 가까이 가셨을 때였다. 한 소경이 길가에 앉아 구걸하다가

36 사람들이 지나가는 소리를 듣고 무슨 일이냐고 묻자

37 그들은 “나사렛 예수님이 지나가신다” 하고 말해 주었다.

38 그러자 그는 큰 소리로 “다윗의 후손 예수님, 저를 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오” 하고 외쳤다.

39 앞서 가는 사람들이 그를 꾸짖으며 조용히 하라고 했으나 그는 더욱 큰 소리로 “다윗의 후손이시여, 저를 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오” 하고 외쳤다.

40 예수님은 걸음을 멈추시고 그 소경을 데려오라고 하셨다. 소경이 가까이 왔을 때

41 예수님이 그에게 “원하는 것이 무엇이냐?” 하고 물으시자 “주님, 눈을 뜨게 해 주십시오” 하고 그는 대답하였다.

42 그래서 예수님이 “오냐, 눈을 떠라. 네 믿음이 너를 낫게 하였다” 하고 말씀하시자

43 그가 곧 눈을 뜨고 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 예수님을 따라갔고 사람들은 이 광경을 보고 모두 하나님을 찬양하였다.

18 Now he was speaking a mashal to them about how it is necessary always for them to daven and not to lose chozek, [YESHAYAH 40:31]

Saying, An aza (certain) Shofet was in a certain town. Now this Shofet had no fear of Hashem nor any respect for Bnei Adam.

Now an almanah was in that town and she was coming to him saying, Grant me yashrus (justice) against my ish riv (opponent in a lawsuit). [YESHAYAH 1:17]

And for a zman (time) the Shofet was not willing. But after these things, he said to himself, If indeed Hashem I do not fear nor do Bnei Adam I respect,

Yet because this almanah (widow) causes me tzoros and is such a nudzh (pest), I will grant yashrus (justice) to her, lest in the end she may wear me out by her constant coming.

Now Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu said, Listen to what the unrighteous shofet says.

Now will not Hashem by all means do mishpat for his Bechirim crying out to him yomam valailah? Will he delay long in bringing them help? [Ex 22:23; Ps 88:1]

I say to you that Hashem will bring about their yashrus (justice) swiftly, but when the Ben HaAdam (Moshiach, DANIEL 7:13-14) comes, will he then find emunah (faith) on haaretz?

And he said this mashal also to some, who have become soimech (confident, putting their trust and being dependent) on themselves that they are tzaddikim and who are despising others. [YESHAYAH 65:5]

10 Shnei anashim (two men) went up to the Beis Hamikdash to daven, one was a Perush and the other, a moches (tax collector).

11 The Perush was standing by himself, shawkling (ritual swaying while davening), and his tefillah went like this: Adonoi, Modeh Ani that I am not like other men, swindlers, reshaim, menaafim, or even this moches.

12 I undergo a tzom (fast) twice during the week, I give the ma’aser (tithe) of everything as much as I get. [YESHAYAH 58:3, MALACHI 3:8]

13 But the moches (tax collector) stood at a distance and was not willing even to lift up his eynayim to Shomayim but was beating his chest, saying, Adonoi, rachem na al choteh kamoni! (L-rd, have mercy on a sinner like me!) [YESHAYAH 66:2; YIRMEYAH 31:19]

14 I say to you, this one, rather than the other one, went down to his bais having been made yitzdak im Hashem (justified with G-d). Because everyone lifting himself up will be brought low, but the one bringing himself low will be uplifted.

15 Now also they were bringing to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach yeladim that he might place his hands on them. But having seen this, the talmidim were rebuking them.

16 But Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach called for them saying, Permit the yeladim to come to me and do not hinder them, for of such ones is the Malchut Hashem.

17 Omein, I say to you, whoever does not welcome the Malchut Hashem as a yeled would, may by no means enter into it.

18 And a certain one of the manhigim (leaders, one of the wealthier Baale-Battishe Jews) questioned Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, saying, Mori HaTov (Good Teacher), what mitzvah must I do to inherit Chayyei Olam?

19 And Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach said to him, Why do you call me tov? No one is tov except Hashem alone, nu?

20 You have daas of the Mitzvot. LO TINAF, LO TIRTZACH, LO TIGNOV, LO TAANEH VREIACHAH ED SHAKER, KABEID ES AVICHA VES IMMECHAH. [SHEMOT 20:12-16; DEVARIM 5:16-20]

21 And he said, In all these things I have been shomer mitzvot and frum from my kinder-yoren.

22 And having heard, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach said to him, Still one thing for you is lacking. Everything as much as you have, sell and distribute to the aniyim, and you will have otzar in Himel; and come follow me.

23 But having heard these things, he fell into agmat nefesh (grief, sadness). For he had much kesef.

24 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, when he saw him fall into agmat nefesh, said, How difficult it is for the ones having osher (riches) to enter into the Malchut Hashem. [MISHLE 11:28]

25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for an oisher (rich man) to enter into the Malchut Hashem.

26 But the ones, having heard, said, Then who is able to come to Yeshu’at Eloheinu?

27 And he said, The things impossible with Bnei Adam are possible with Hashem.

28 And Kefa said, Hinei, we have left everything to follow you.

29 And he said to them, Omein, I say to you, that there is no one who left bais or isha or achim or horim (parents) or yeladim because of the Malchut Hashem,

30 Who will not receive many times as much in this zman (time) and in the Olam HaBah, Chayyei Olam.

31 And having taken the Shneym Asar (Twelve) aside in a yechidus, he said to them, Hinei, we are making another aliyah leregel (pilgrimage) to Yerushalayim, and all the things having been written by the Nevi’im about the Ben HaAdam (Moshiach, DANIEL 7:13-14) will be fulfilled. [TEHILLIM 118:22]

32 For he (the Ben HaAdam Moshiach) will be delivered up to the Goyim and he will be ridiculed and he will be mistreated and he will be spat upon,

33 And, having laid the shot (whip) on him, they will kill him and after his histalkus (passing), on the Yom HaShlishi there will be Techiyas HaMoshiach.

34 And they had binah (understanding, comprehension) regarding none of these things, and this dvar was nistar (concealed) from them, and they had no understanding of the things being said.

35 And it came about while Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach drew near to Yericho, a certain ivver (blind man) was sitting beside the road begging.

36 And having heard a multitude traveling through, he was asking what this might be.

37 And they reported to him that Yehoshua from Natzeret is passing by.

38 And he cried out saying, Ben Dovid! Chaneni! (Have mercy on me!)

39 And the ones going past him were rebuking him that he should be silent, but he just so much the more was crying out, Ben Dovid, chaneni!

40 And stopping, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach commanded the ivver to be led to him. Having drawn near, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach asked him, What do you wish that I may do for you?

41 And he said, Adoni, that I may regain my sight.

42 And Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach said to him, Regain your sight; your emunah (faith) has brought you refuah (healing).

43 And at once he saw again and was following Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, shouting, Baruch Hashem! And all the people, who were edei reiyah (eyewitnesses) of this, shouted, Baruch HaShem!

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(A) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(B) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(C)

And the Lord(D) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(E) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(F) comes,(G) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(H) and looked down on everyone else,(I) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(J) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(K) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(L) twice a week and give a tenth(M) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(N) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(O)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(P)

The Little Children and Jesus(Q)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(R) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(S)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(T)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a](U)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(V) and you will have treasure in heaven.(W) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(X) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(Y)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(Z)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(AA) eternal life.”(AB)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(AC)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(AD) and everything that is written by the prophets(AE) about the Son of Man(AF) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(AG) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(AH) and kill him.(AI) On the third day(AJ) he will rise again.”(AK)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(AL)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(AM)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(AN) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(AO)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(AP) have mercy(AQ) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(AR)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(AS) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(AT)
