바울, 자신의 일을 변호하다
10 나 바울은, 부드럽고 너그러우신 그리스도의 이름으로 여러분에게 간청합니다. 내가 여러분과 같이 있을 때는 약하나, 여러분을 떠나 있을 때는 담대하다고 말하는 사람들이 있습니다. 2 그들은 우리가 세상의 기준에 따라 사는 줄로 생각하는 모양입니다. 내가 다시 가면 그렇게 말하는 사람들을 엄하게 대할 생각입니다. 그러나 여러분에게는 그렇게 대할 필요가 없게 해 주기를 간청합니다. 3 우리도 세상에서 살고 있습니다만, 세상 사람들처럼 속되게 싸우지는 않습니다. 4 우리는 세상 사람들이 쓰는 것과는 다른 무기를 가지고 싸웁니다. 우리의 무기는 요새라도 무너뜨릴 수 있는 하나님의 강한 무기입니다. 우리는 그 무기로 인간적인 논쟁을 무찌르고, 5 하나님을 아는 데 장애가 되는 온갖 벽을 무너뜨리고, 모든 생각을 사로잡아 그리스도께 순종하게 합니다. 6 그리고 여러분이 온전히 순종하게 되고 나면, 우리는 그때까지 순종하지 않고 있는 사람들을 벌할 준비를 갖추고 있을 것입니다.
7 여러분은 눈앞의 사실을 똑바로 보십시오. 누구든지 자기가 그리스도께 속해 있다고 확신하는 사람은, 우리도 자기 못지않게 그리스도께 속해 있다는 사실을 다시 한 번 생각해 보아야 할 것입니다. 8 주께서 우리에게 주신 권위에 대하여 내가 좀 지나칠 정도로 자랑하는 것은 아닌지 모르겠습니다. 그러나 이 권위는 여러분을 넘어뜨리라고 주신 것이 아니라 여러분을 세우라고 주신 것입니다. 그러니 내 자랑이 좀 지나쳤다 하더라도 부끄러워할 일은 아니라고 생각합니다. 9 내가 편지들로 여러분에게 겁을 주려 하는 것처럼 보이지 않기를 바랍니다. 10 어떤 사람들이 “바울의 편지는 힘이 있고 감동적이다. 그러나 그를 직접 대해 보면, 그는 약하고 말주변도 없다.” 라고 말합니다. 11 이런 사람들은, 우리가 떠나 있을 때 편지로 쓰는 말과, 여러분과 함께 있을 때 보여 주는 행동 사이에, 아무런 차이가 없으리라는 것을 알아 두어야 할 것입니다.
12 우리는 자신들을 내세우는 사람들 축에 끼어들거나 그들과 견주어 볼 생각은 없습니다. 그들은 자신들을 잣대로 하여 스스로를 재고, 자신들을 표준으로 삼아 거기에 스스로를 견주고 있으니 참으로 어리석은 사람들입니다. 13 우리는 마땅한 정도 이상으로 자랑하지 않겠습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 일에 대해서만 자랑하겠습니다. 그리고 그 일에는 여러분 가운데에서 우리가 한 일도 들어 있습니다. 14 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 가지고 맨 처음 그 먼 곳까지 여러분을 찾아간 사람들은 우리였습니다. 그러니 우리가 여러분에 대한 권위를 주장하는 것은 결코 지나친 일이 아닙니다. 15 우리는 주제넘게 다른 사람들이 한 일을 가지고 자랑하지 않습니다. 우리가 바라는 것은, 여러분의 믿음이 자라감에 따라, 우리의 활동 범위가 여러분 가운데서 점점 넓어지는 것입니다. 16 그리하여 우리가 여러분의 도시 너머에 있는 지역에 가서도 기쁜 소식을 전할 수 있기 바랍니다. 우리는 다른 사람들의 지역에 들어가서, 그들이 이미 이루어 놓은 일을 자랑할 생각은 없습니다. 17 “자랑하려는 사람은 마땅히 주 안에서 자랑하게 하십시오.”(A) 18 참으로 인정받는 사람은 자기를 내세우는 사람이 아니라, 주께서 내세워 주시는 사람입니다.

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry
10 By the humility and gentleness(A) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(B) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! 2 I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(C) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(D) 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(E) 4 The weapons we fight with(F) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(G) to demolish strongholds.(H) 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(I) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(J) to Christ. 6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(K)
7 You are judging by appearances.[a](L) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(M) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(N) 8 So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(O) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(P) I will not be ashamed of it. 9 I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(Q) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(R) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.
12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(S) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(T) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(U) with the gospel of Christ.(V) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(W) by boasting of work done by others.(X) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(Y) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(Z) in the regions beyond you.(AA) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[b](AB) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(AC) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(AD)

10 (A)I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the (B)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— 2 I beg of you (C)that when I am present I may not have to show (D)boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the (E)weapons of (F)our warfare are not of the flesh but have (G)divine power (H)to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and (I)every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to (J)obey Christ, 6 (K)being ready to punish every disobedience, (L)when your obedience is complete.
7 (M)Look at what is before your eyes. (N)If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as (O)he is Christ's, (P)so also are we. 8 For even if I boast a little too much of (Q)our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. 9 I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but (R)his bodily presence is weak, and (S)his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or (T)compare ourselves with some of those who (U)are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are (V)without understanding.
13 But we will not boast (W)beyond limits, but will (X)boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, (Y)to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. (Z)For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that (AA)as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be (AB)greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let (AC)the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is (AD)not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one (AE)whom the Lord commends.
