Predicación de Juan el Bautista(A)
3 En aquellos días Juan el Bautista se presentó predicando en el desierto de Judea, 2 y decía: «Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos(B) se ha acercado.(C) 3 Éste es aquel de quien el profeta Isaías dijo:
»“Una voz clama en el desierto:
Preparen el camino del Señor;
enderecen sus sendas.”»(D)
4 Juan usaba un vestido de pelo de camello, llevaba un cinto de cuero alrededor de la cintura,(E) y se alimentaba de langostas y miel silvestre. 5 A él acudía la gente de Jerusalén y de toda Judea, y de toda la provincia cercana al río Jordán, 6 y allí en el Jordán la gente confesaba sus pecados y Juan los bautizaba.
7 Cuando él vio que muchos de los fariseos y de los saduceos venían a su bautismo, les decía: «¡Generación de víboras!(F) ¿Quién les enseñó a huir de la ira venidera? 8 Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, 9 y no crean que pueden decir: “Tenemos a Abrahán por padre”,(G) porque yo les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán. 10 El hacha ya está lista para derribar de raíz a los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y echado en el fuego.(H)
11 »A decir verdad, yo los bautizo en agua en señal de arrepentimiento, pero el que viene después de mí, de quien no soy digno de llevar su calzado, es más poderoso que yo. Él los bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego. 12 Ya tiene el bieldo en la mano, de modo que limpiará su era, recogerá su trigo en el granero, y quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.»

13 Jesús fue de Galilea al Jordán, donde estaba Juan, para ser bautizado por él. 14 Pero Juan se le oponía, diciendo: «Yo necesito ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?» 15 Jesús le respondió: «Por ahora, déjalo así, porque conviene que cumplamos toda justicia.» Entonces Juan aceptó. 16 Después de ser bautizado, Jesús salió del agua. Entonces los cielos se abrieron y él vio al Espíritu de Dios, que descendía como paloma y se posaba sobre él. 17 Desde los cielos se oyó entonces una voz, que decía: «Éste es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco.»(J)

3 En aquellos días se presentó Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea. 2 Decía: «Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca». 3 Juan era aquel de quien había escrito el profeta Isaías:
«Voz de uno que grita en el desierto:
“Preparen el camino para el Señor,
háganle sendas derechas”».[a]
4 La ropa de Juan estaba hecha de pelo de camello. Llevaba puesto un cinturón de cuero y se alimentaba de langostas y miel silvestre. 5 Acudía a él la gente de Jerusalén, de toda Judea y de toda la región del Jordán. 6 Cuando confesaban sus pecados, él los bautizaba en el río Jordán.
7 Pero al ver que muchos fariseos y saduceos llegaban adonde él estaba bautizando, dijo: «¡Camada de víboras! ¿Quién les advirtió que huyeran del castigo que se acerca? 8 Produzcan frutos que demuestren arrepentimiento. 9 No piensen que podrán decir: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre”. Porque les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios es capaz de darle hijos a Abraham. 10 El hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles y todo árbol que no produzca buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
11 »Yo los bautizo a ustedes con[b] agua como señal de su arrepentimiento. Pero el que viene después de mí es más poderoso que yo y ni siquiera merezco llevarle las sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. 12 Tiene el aventador en la mano y limpiará su era recogiendo el trigo en su granero. La paja, en cambio, la quemará con fuego que nunca se apagará».

13 Un día Jesús fue de Galilea al Jordán para que Juan lo bautizara. 14 Pero Juan trató de disuadirlo.
—Yo soy el que necesita ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí? —objetó.
15 —Hagámoslo como te digo, pues nos conviene cumplir con lo que es justo —contestó Jesús.
Entonces Juan consintió.
16 Tan pronto como Jesús fue bautizado, subió del agua. En ese momento se abrió el cielo y vio al Espíritu de Dios bajar como una paloma y posarse sobre él. 17 Y una voz desde el cielo decía: «Este es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él».

3 Por aquel tiempo se presentó Juan el Bautista en el desierto de Judea. 2 En su proclamación decía: «¡Vuélvanse a Dios, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca!»
3 Juan era aquel de quien Dios había dicho por medio del profeta Isaías:
«Una voz grita en el desierto:
“Preparen el camino del Señor;
ábranle un camino recto.”»
4 La ropa de Juan estaba hecha de pelo de camello, y se la sujetaba al cuerpo con un cinturón de cuero; su comida era langostas y miel del monte. 5 La gente de Jerusalén y todos los de la región de Judea y de la región cercana al Jordán salían a oírle. 6 Confesaban sus pecados y Juan los bautizaba en el río Jordán.
7 Pero cuando Juan vio que muchos fariseos y saduceos iban a que los bautizara, les dijo: «¡Raza de víboras! ¿Quién les ha dicho a ustedes que van a librarse del terrible castigo que se acerca? 8 Pórtense de tal modo que se vea claramente que se han vuelto al Señor, 9 y no presuman diciéndose a sí mismos: “Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham”; porque les aseguro que incluso a estas piedras Dios puede convertirlas en descendientes de Abraham. 10 El hacha ya está lista para cortar los árboles de raíz. Todo árbol que no da buen fruto, se corta y se echa al fuego. 11 Yo, en verdad, los bautizo con agua para invitarlos a que se vuelvan a Dios; pero el que viene después de mí los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. Él es más poderoso que yo, que ni siquiera merezco llevarle sus sandalias. 12 Trae su pala en la mano y limpiará el trigo y lo separará de la paja. Guardará su trigo en el granero, pero quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.»

13 Jesús fue de Galilea al río Jordán, donde estaba Juan, para que éste lo bautizara. 14 Al principio Juan quería impedírselo, y le dijo:
—Yo debería ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?
15 Jesús le contestó:
—Déjalo así por ahora, pues es conveniente que cumplamos todo lo que es justo ante Dios.
Entonces Juan consintió. 16 En cuanto Jesús fue bautizado y salió del agua, el cielo se le abrió y vio que el Espíritu de Dios bajaba sobre él como una paloma. 17 Se oyó entonces una voz del cielo, que decía: «Éste es mi Hijo amado, a quien he elegido.»

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)
3 In those days John the Baptist(B) came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(C) has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[a](D)
4 John’s(E) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(F) His food was locusts(G) and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized(H) by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(I) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(J) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(K) 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(M)
11 “I baptize you with[b] water for repentance.(N) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit(O) and fire.(P) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(Q)

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(S) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(T) and he saw the Spirit of God(U) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(V) said, “This is my Son,(W) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(X)

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
