Jesus rider in i Jerusalem på en åsna
(Mark 11:1-10; Luk 19:28-38; Joh 12:12-15)
21 När de närmade sig Jerusalem och kom till Betfage vid Olivberget, skickade han iväg två lärjungar 2 och sa till dem: ”Gå till byn som ligger framför er. Där kommer ni genast att hitta ett åsnesto stå bundet med ett föl bredvid sig. Ta dem och led hit dem, 3 och om någon frågar vad ni håller på med, så säg bara: ’Herren behöver dem och kommer snart att lämna tillbaka dem.’ ”
4 Genom detta gick det i uppfyllelse som förutsagts genom profeten:
5 ”Säg till dotter Sion[a]:
’Se, din kung kommer till dig,
ödmjuk och ridande på en åsna,
ja, på ett åsneföl.’ ”[b]
6 De båda lärjungarna gjorde som Jesus hade befallt dem och 7 tog med åsnan och fölet till honom. Sedan lade de sina mantlar på åsnorna, och Jesus satt upp. 8 Många i folkmassan bredde ut sina mantlar på vägen, och andra skar kvistar från träden och strödde ut på vägen.[c] 9 Och allt folket, både de som gick framför Jesus och de som gick efter, ropade:
”Hosianna[d], Davids Son!”
”Välsignad är han som kommer i Herrens namn!”
”Hosianna i höjden!”
10 Det blev stor uppståndelse i hela Jerusalem när han red in, och människorna frågade: ”Vem är han?” 11 Folkmassan svarade då: ”Det är profeten Jesus från Nasaret i Galileen.”
Jesus rensar templet
(Mark 11:15-19; Luk 19:45-47; Joh 2:13-16)
12 Sedan gick Jesus in i templet och drev ut alla köpmännen och deras kunder ur templet. Han välte omkull borden för dem som växlade pengar och stånden för dem som sålde duvor.[e] 13 Och han sa till dem: ”Det står skrivet: ’Mitt hus ska kallas ett bönehus.’ Men ni gör det till ett rövarnäste.”[f]
14 Nu kom många blinda och förlamade fram till honom på tempelplatsen, och han botade dem. 15 Men när översteprästerna och de skriftlärda såg dessa märkliga under och små barn som ropade på tempelområdet: ”Hosianna, Davids Son”[g], blev de upprörda och frågade honom: ”Hör du inte vad barnen ropar?” 16 ”Jo”, svarade Jesus. ”Men har ni inte läst:
’Av barns och småbarns mun
har du gjort en lovsång till dig[h]?’ ”
17 Sedan lämnade han dem och gick ut ur staden till Betania, där han stannade över natten.
Jesus förbannar fikonträdet
(Mark 11:12-14; 11:20-24)
18 När Jesus på morgonen var på väg tillbaka till staden blev han hungrig. 19 Han fick då syn på ett fikonträd vid vägen, gick fram för att se om det fanns någon frukt på det men det fanns bara blad.[i] Då sa han till trädet: ”Aldrig mer ska du bära frukt!” Och genast vissnade fikonträdet.
20 Lärjungarna blev alldeles häpna och frågade: ”Hur kom det sig att fikonträdet vissnade så fort?”
21 Då sa Jesus till dem: ”Sannerligen säger jag er: om ni tror och inte tvivlar, kan ni också göra så här med fikonträdet, och mer än så. Ni kan till och med säga till det här berget: ’Upp med dig och kasta dig i havet’ och det kommer att göra det. 22 Ni kan få vad som helst som ni ber om i era böner, om ni bara tror.”
De judiska ledarna ifrågasätter Jesus fullmakt
(Mark 11:27-33; Luk 20:1-8)
23 När Jesus hade kommit till tempelplatsen och höll på att undervisa där, kom översteprästerna och folkets ledare fram till honom. De frågade: ”Vad har du för fullmakt att göra detta, och vem har gett dig den fullmakten?” 24 Jesus sa: ”Jag vill också ställa en fråga till er. Om ni svarar på den, ska jag tala om för er vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta.” 25 ”Varifrån kom Johannes dop, från himlen eller från människor?”
De började genast diskutera med varandra och sa: ”Om vi säger att det var från himlen, så kommer han att fråga varför vi inte trodde på honom. 26 Men om vi säger att det var från människor, då kommer vi att få vara rädda för folket. Alla anser ju att Johannes var en profet.” 27 Därför svarade de till slut: ”Vi vet inte.”
Då sa Jesus till dem: ”I så fall säger inte jag heller vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta.”
Liknelsen om de två sönerna
28 ”Men vad säger ni om det här? En man hade två söner, och en dag sa han till den ene: ’Gå ut och arbeta i vingården idag.’ 29 ’Det vill jag inte’, svarade sonen, men efter ett tag ändrade han sig och gick ändå. 30 Sedan sa fadern likadant till den andre, och han svarade: ’Javisst, far, det ska jag göra.’ Men han gick aldrig. 31 Vilken av dessa två lydde sin far?” De svarade: ”Den förste naturligtvis.”
Då sa Jesus till dem: ”Sannerligen säger jag er: tullindrivare och prostituerade ska gå före er till Guds rike. 32 Johannes kom ju och visade er rättfärdighetens väg, men ni trodde inte på honom. Tullindrivarna och de prostituerade trodde däremot på honom. Men trots att ni såg detta ångrade ni er inte och började tro på honom.
Liknelsen om mannen som arrenderade ut sin vingård
(Mark 12:1-12; Luk 20:9-19)
33 Hör nu på en annan liknelse. En jordägare planterade en vingård. Han byggde en mur runt omkring den och grävde en grop där han kunde pressa druvorna. Han byggde också ett vakttorn. Sedan arrenderade han ut vingården till några lantbrukare medan han själv reste bort. 34 När det så blev dags att skörda, sände han några tjänare till lantbrukarna för att hämta den del av skörden som var hans.
35 Men lantbrukarna tog fast tjänarna, misshandlade en, dödade en annan och stenade en tredje. 36 Då sände jordägaren dit ännu fler tjänare, men samma sak hände igen. 37 Till slut sände ägaren sin son, för han tänkte: ’Honom ska de väl ändå visa respekt för.’
38 Men när lantbrukarna fick se sonen, sa de till varandra: ’Här kommer arvtagaren. Kom så dödar vi honom och lägger beslag på den själva!’ 39 Så tog de fast sonen, släpade ut honom ur vingården och dödade honom.
40 Vad ska nu vingårdsägaren göra med dessa lantbrukare när han kommer tillbaka?” 41 Översteprästerna och folkets ledare svarade: ”Han kommer helt säkert att döda dem, och sedan arrenderar han ut vingården till andra som ger honom hans del av skörden när det är dags.”
42 Då sa Jesus till dem: ”Har ni aldrig läst i Skrifterna:
’Den sten som inte dög åt byggnadsarbetarna
har blivit en hörnsten.
Det är Herrens verk
och förunderligt i våra ögon.’[j]
43 Därför säger jag er att Guds rike ska tas ifrån er och överlämnas till ett folk som bär dess frukt. 44 Den som snubblar på den stenen blir krossad, och den som stenen faller på blir söndersmulad.[k]”
45 När översteprästerna och fariseerna hörde Jesus liknelser, förstod de att det var dem han talade om. 46 Därför ville de arrestera honom genast, men de var rädda för folket, som ansåg att Jesus var en profet.

The Triumphant Entry Into Jerusalem(A)
21 When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, on the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go over into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them.’ And he will send them immediately.”
4 All this was done to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying:
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Look, your King is coming to you,
humble, and sitting on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’[a]”
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their garments on them, and He sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their garments on the road. Others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went before Him and that followed Him cried out:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’[b]
Hosanna in the highest!”
10 When He entered Jerusalem, the entire city was moved, saying, “Who is He?”
11 The crowds said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
The Cleansing of the Temple(B)
12 Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who sold and bought in the temple and overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’[c] but you have made it ‘a den of thieves.’[d] ”
14 The blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were extremely displeased 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?”
Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read,
‘Out of the mouth of children and infants
You have perfected praise’[e]?”
17 And He left them and went out of the city into Bethany, and He lodged there.
The Cursing of the Fig Tree(C)
18 Now in the morning as He returned to the city, He became hungry. 19 When He saw a fig tree by the road, He went to it but found nothing on it except leaves. He said to it, “Let no fruit ever grow on you again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away.
20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away instantly?”
21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed, and be thrown into the sea,’ it will be done. 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, if you believe, you will receive.”
The Question of Jesus’ Authority(D)
23 When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”
24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question. If you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Where did the baptism of John come from? From heaven or from men?”
They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the people, for all hold John as a prophet.”
27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.”
Then He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go work today in my vineyard.’
29 “He answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he repented and went.
30 “Then he came to the second, and said likewise. He answered, ‘I will go, sir,’ but did not go.
31 “Which of the two did the will of his father?”
They said, “The first.”
Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, the tax collectors and prostitutes enter the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.
The Parable of the Vineyard and the Vinedressers(E)
33 “Listen to another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and built a wall around it. He dug a winepress in it and built a tower. Then he rented it to vinedressers and went into a distant country. 34 When the season of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers to receive his fruit.
35 “The vinedressers took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again, he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did likewise to them. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
38 “But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39 So they caught him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”
41 They said, “He will severely destroy those wicked men and rent his vineyard to other vinedressers who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[f]?
43 “Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing its fruits. 44 Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces. But on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”
45 When the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. 46 But as they tried to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, because they held Him as a prophet.
