21 当耶稣和门徒们临近耶路撒冷，来到橄榄山附近的伯法其的时候，耶稣派了两个门徒， 2 对他们说：“你们到对面的村子里去，会立刻发现一头驴拴在那里，还有一头驴驹与它在一起。把它们解开，牵来给我。 3 如果有人对你们说什么，你们就说‘主需要它们，会很快把它们送来的。’”
4 这件事发生，是为要应验那藉着先知所说的话：
5 “要对锡安的女儿说
‘看哪，你的王来到你这里，
是谦和的，骑着驴——
一头小驴，
就是驴的驹子。’”[a]
6 两个门徒就去，照着耶稣所吩咐的做了。 7 他们牵来了驴和驴驹，把外衣搭在它们背上，耶稣就坐在上面。 8 有一大群人把自己的外衣铺在路上，也有人从树上砍下枝子铺在路上。 9 前行后随的人群呼喊说：
“和散那归于大卫的后裔！
奉主名而来的那一位——
是蒙祝福的！
在至高之处——和散那！”[b]
10 耶稣进了耶路撒冷，全城都轰动了，人们问：“这个人是谁？” 11 众人说：“这就是从加利利的拿撒勒来的先知耶稣。”
洁净圣殿
12 耶稣进了[c]圣殿，把所有在圣殿里做买卖的人都赶了出去。他推翻了兑换银币之人的桌子和卖鸽子之人的凳子， 13 对他们说：“经上记着：‘我的殿将被称为祷告的殿’[d]，而你们却使它成为贼窝[e]了！”
小孩子赞美耶稣
14 耶稣在圣殿里，一些瞎眼的和瘸腿的来到他面前，耶稣就使他们痊愈了。 15 祭司长们和经文士们看见耶稣所行的神迹，又见孩子们在圣殿里呼喊说：“和散那归于大卫的后裔”，就很生气。 16 他们问耶稣：“你听见这些小孩在说什么吗？”
耶稣回答他们，说：“是的，听见了[f]。难道你们从来没有读过‘从孩子和吃奶婴儿的口中，你预备了赞美’[g]这话吗？”
17 然后，耶稣离开他们，出城到伯大尼去，在那里过夜。
不结果子的无花果树
18 清晨，回城的时候，耶稣饿了。 19 他看见路边有一棵无花果树，就上前去，可是树上除了叶子，什么也找不到。于是他对那棵树说：“你永远不会再结果子了！”那棵无花果树立刻就枯萎了。
20 门徒们看见了，感到惊奇，说：“这棵无花果树怎么立刻枯萎了呢？”
21 耶稣回答他们，说：“我确实地告诉你们：你们如果存着信而不疑惑，不仅能做我对这无花果树所做的，即使对这座山说‘愿你被挪开，被丢进海里去！’事情也将成就。 22 你们在祷告中无论求什么，只要信，就必得着。”
质疑耶稣的权柄
23 耶稣进了圣殿，正教导人的时候，祭司长们和民间的长老们前来问他：“你凭什么权柄做这些事？是谁给你这权柄的？”
24 耶稣回答他们，说：“我也要问你们一个问题，如果你们回答我，我就告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。 25 约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的？是来自天上，还是来自人间呢？”
他们就彼此讨论，说：“如果我们说‘是来自天上’，他就会问我们‘那么你们为什么不相信他呢？’ 26 但如果说‘是来自人间’——我们又怕民众，因为大家都认为约翰是先知。” 27 于是他们回答耶稣，说：“我们不知道。”
耶稣就对他们说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”
两个儿子的比喻
28 “这件事你们怎么看？一个人有两个儿子，他前来对大儿子说：‘孩子，你今天到葡萄园去做工吧。’
29 “大儿子回答说：‘我不愿意去。’可是后来他悔改，就去了。 30 父亲前来对小儿子也说同样的话。
“小儿子回答说：‘主啊，我去。’可是他没有去。
31 “这两个儿子中，哪一个遵行父亲的意愿呢？”
他们回答说：“大儿子。”
耶稣说：“我确实地告诉你们：税吏和妓女要在你们的前面进神的国， 32 因为约翰来到你们这里指明义的道路，你们不相信他，而那些税吏和妓女们却相信了他。你们虽然看见了，后来还是没有悔改去相信他。
葡萄园主的比喻
33 “你们当听另一个比喻：有一个人，是一家的主人，他栽种了一个葡萄园，四面围上篱笆，里面挖了一个榨酒池，盖了一座守望楼，然后把葡萄园租给一些农夫，就出外旅行。 34 当收果子的季节近了，主人就派了奴仆们到那些农夫那里去收取他的果子。 35 但那些农夫抓住他的奴仆，打了一个，杀了一个，还用石头砸死一个。 36 主人又派别的奴仆去，比先前的更多，那些农夫也照样对待他们。 37 后来他差派自己的儿子到他们那里，说：‘他们一定会尊重我的儿子。’
38 “可是那些农夫看见他的儿子，就彼此说：‘这是继承人。来，我们把他杀了，占有他的继业！’ 39 于是他们抓住他，把他扔出葡萄园外，杀了。 40 那么，葡萄园的主人回来的时候，会怎么对待那些农夫呢？”
41 他们回答说：“他会狠狠地除灭那些恶人，把葡萄园另租给按时交果子的农夫们。”
42 耶稣对他们说：“难道你们从来没有读过这段经文吗？
‘工匠所弃绝的石头，
它已经成了房角的头块石头；
这是主所成就的，
在我们眼中实在奇妙！’[h]
43 为此，我告诉你们：神的国要从你们中间被夺走，赐给那结神国果子的人。 44 那跌落在这石头上的人，就将被破碎；这石头落在谁的身上，就会把谁砸得稀烂。”[i]
45 祭司长们和法利赛人听了耶稣的这些比喻，知道他是针对他们而说的， 46 就想拘捕他，可是怕民众，因为他们都认为耶稣是先知。

Jesus Enters Jerusalem
(Mark 11.1-11; Luke 19.28-38; John 12.12-19)
21 When Jesus and his disciples came near Jerusalem, he went to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives and sent two of them on ahead. 2 He told them, “Go into the next village, where you will at once find a donkey and her colt. Untie the two donkeys and bring them to me. 3 If anyone asks why you are doing this, just say, ‘The Lord[a] needs them.’ He will at once let you have the donkeys.”
4 So God's promise came true, just as the prophet had said,
5 (A) “Announce to the people
of Jerusalem:
‘Your king is coming to you!
He is humble
and rides on a donkey.
He comes on the colt
of a donkey.’ ”
6 The disciples left and did what Jesus had told them to do. 7 They brought the donkey and its colt and laid some clothes on their backs. Then Jesus got on.
8 Many people spread clothes in the road, while others put down branches[b] which they had cut from trees. 9 (B) Some people walked ahead of Jesus and others followed behind. They were all shouting,
“Hooray[c] for the Son of David![d]
God bless the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Hooray for God
in heaven above!”
10 When Jesus came to Jerusalem, everyone in the city was excited and asked, “Who can this be?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Jesus in the Temple
(Mark 11.15-19; Luke 19.45-48; John 2.13-22)
12 Jesus went into the temple and chased out everyone who was selling or buying. He turned over the tables of the moneychangers and the benches of the ones who were selling doves. 13 (C) He told them, “The Scriptures say, ‘My house should be called a place of worship.’ But you have turned it into a place where robbers hide.”
14 Blind and lame people came to Jesus in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were angry when they saw his miracles and heard the children shouting praises to the Son of David.[e] 16 (D) The men said to Jesus, “Don't you hear what those children are saying?”
“Yes, I do!” Jesus answered. “Don't you know that the Scriptures say, ‘Children and infants will sing praises’?” 17 Then Jesus left the city and went out to the village of Bethany, where he spent the night.
Jesus Puts a Curse on a Fig Tree
(Mark 11.12-14,20-24)
18 When Jesus got up the next morning, he was hungry. He started out for the city, 19 and along the way he saw a fig tree. But when he came to it, he found only leaves and no figs. So he told the tree, “You will never again grow any fruit!” Right then the fig tree dried up.
20 The disciples were shocked when they saw how quickly the tree had dried up. 21 (E) But Jesus said to them, “If you have faith and don't doubt, I promise you can do what I did to this tree. And you will be able to do even more. You can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. 22 If you have faith when you pray, you will be given whatever you ask for.”
A Question about Jesus' Authority
(Mark 11.27-33; Luke 20.1-8)
23 Jesus had gone into the temple and was teaching when the chief priests and the leaders of the people came up to him. They asked, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
24 Jesus answered, “I have just one question to ask you. If you answer it, I will tell you where I got the right to do these things. 25 Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?”
They thought it over and said to each other, “We can't say God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn't believe John. 26 On the other hand, these people think John was a prophet, and we are afraid of what they might do to us. That's why we can't say it was merely some human who gave John the right to baptize.” 27 So they told Jesus, “We don't know.”
Jesus said, “Then I won't tell you who gave me the right to do what I do.”
A Story about Two Sons
28 Jesus said:
I will tell you a story about a man who had two sons. Then you can tell me what you think. The father went to the older son and said, “Go work in the vineyard today!” 29 His son told him he would not do it, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The man then told his younger son to go work in the vineyard. The boy said he would, but he didn't go. 31 Which one of the sons obeyed his father?
“The older one,” the chief priests and leaders answered.
Then Jesus told them:
You can be sure tax collectors[f] and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you ever will! 32 (F) When John the Baptist showed you how to do right, you would not believe him. But these evil people did believe. And even when you saw what they did, you still would not change your minds and believe.
Renters of a Vineyard
(Mark 12.1-12; Luke 20.9-19)
33 (G) Jesus told the chief priests and leaders to listen to this story:
A land owner once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country.
34 When it was harvest time, the owner sent some servants to get his share of the grapes. 35 But the renters grabbed those servants. They beat up one, killed one, and stoned one of them to death. 36 He then sent more servants than he did the first time. But the renters treated them in the same way.
37 Finally, the owner sent his own son to the renters, because he thought they would respect him. 38 But when they saw the man's son, they said, “Someday he will own the vineyard. Let's kill him! Then we can have it all for ourselves.” 39 So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40 Jesus asked, “When the owner of that vineyard comes, what do you suppose he will do to those renters?”
41 The chief priests and leaders answered, “He will kill them in some horrible way. Then he will rent out his vineyard to people who will give him his share of grapes at harvest time.”
42 (H) Jesus replied, “You surely know that the Scriptures say,
‘The stone the builders
tossed aside
is now the most important
stone of all.
This is something
the Lord has done,
and it is amazing to us.’
43 I tell you God's kingdom will be taken from you and given to people who will do what he demands. 44 Anyone who stumbles over this stone will be crushed, and anyone it falls on will be smashed to pieces.”[g]
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard these stories, they knew Jesus was talking about them. 46 So they looked for a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid to, because the people thought he was a prophet.

17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

Einzug Jesu in Jerusalem
21 + Als sie sich [nun] Jerusalem näherten und nach Bethphage an den Ölberg kamen, sandte Jesus zwei Jünger 2 und sprach zu ihnen: Geht in das Dorf, das vor euch liegt, und sogleich werdet ihr eine Eselin angebunden finden und ein Füllen bei ihr, die bindet los und führt sie zu mir! 3 Und wenn euch jemand etwas sagt, so sprecht: Der Herr bedarf ihrer; dann wird er sie sogleich senden.
4 Das ist aber alles geschehen, damit erfüllt würde, was durch den Propheten gesagt ist, der + spricht:
5 „Sagt der Tochter Zion: Siehe, dein König kommt zu dir, sanftmütig und reitet auf einer Eselin und *einem Füllen, dem Jungen des Lasttiers.“
6 Die Jünger aber gingen hin und taten, wie Jesus ihnen befohlen hatte, 7 und brachten die Eselin und das Füllen und legten ihre Kleider auf sie und setzten ihn darauf. 8 Aber die meisten unter der Volksmenge breiteten ihre Kleider auf den Weg; andere hieben Zweige von den Bäumen und streuten sie auf den Weg. 9 Und die Volksmenge, die vorausging, und die, welche nachfolgten, schrieen und sprachen:
Hosianna dem Sohn Davids! Gelobt sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn! Hosianna in der Höhe!
10 Und als er in Jerusalem einzog, kam die ganze Stadt in Bewegung und sprach: Wer ist dieser? 11 Das Volk aber sagte: Das ist Jesus, der Prophet von Nazareth in Galiläa!
Jesus vertreibt die Händler im Tempel
12 Und Jesus ging in den Tempel Gottes hinein und trieb alle hinaus, die im Tempel verkauften und kauften, und stieß die Tische der Wechsler um und die Stühle derer, die Tauben verkauften. 13 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Es steht geschrieben: „Mein Haus soll ein Bethaus heißen!“ Ihr aber habt es zu einer Räuberhöhle gemacht.
14 Und es kamen Blinde und Lahme im Tempel zu ihm, und er heilte sie.
15 Als aber die Hohenpriester und die Schriftgelehrten die Wunder sahen, die er tat, und die Kinder hörten, die im Tempel riefen und sprachen: Hosianna dem Sohn Davids! wurden sie entrüstet 16 und sprachen zu ihm: Hörst du, was diese sagen? Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ja! Habt ihr noch nie gelesen: „Aus dem Mund der Unmündigen und Säuglinge hast du ein Lob bereitet“?
17 Und er verließ sie, ging zur Stadt hinaus nach Bethanien und übernachtete dort.
Der unfruchtbare Feigenbaum, Die Macht des Glaubens
18 Als er aber früh am Morgen in die Stadt zurückkehrte, hungerte ihn. 19 Und als er einen einzelnen Feigenbaum am Weg sah, ging er zu ihm hin und fand nichts daran als nur Blätter. Da sprach er zu ihm: Nun komme von dir keine Frucht mehr in Ewigkeit! Und auf der Stelle verdorrte der Feigenbaum. 20 Und als die Jünger es sahen, verwunderten sie sich und sprachen: Wie ist der Feigenbaum so plötzlich verdorrt?
21 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr Glauben habt und nicht zweifelt, so werdet ihr nicht nur tun, was mit dem Feigenbaum geschah, sondern auch, wenn ihr zu diesem Berge sagt: Hebe dich und wirf dich ins Meer! - so wird es geschehen. 22 Und alles, was ihr gläubig erbittet im Gebet, [das] werdet ihr empfangen.
Die Vollmacht Jesu
23 Und als er in den Tempel kam, traten die Hohenpriester und die Ältesten des Volkes zu ihm, während er lehrte, und sprachen: In welcher Vollmacht tust du das, und wer hat dir diese Vollmacht gegeben? 24 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ich will euch auch etwas fragen; wenn ihr mir darauf antwortet, will auch ich euch sagen, in welcher Vollmacht ich dies tue. 25 Woher war die Taufe des Johannes? Vom Himmel oder von Menschen?
Da überlegten sie bei sich selbst und sprachen: Wenn wir sagen: Vom Himmel, so wird er uns fragen: Warum habt ihr ihm denn nicht geglaubt? 26 Wenn wir aber sagen: Von Menschen, so müssen wir die Volksmenge fürchten, denn alle halten Johannes für einen Propheten.
27 Und sie antworteten Jesus und sprachen: Wir wissen es nicht!
Da sprach er zu ihnen: So sage ich euch auch nicht, in welcher Vollmacht ich dies tue.
Gleichnis von den zwei Söhnen
28 Was meint ihr aber? Ein Mensch hatte zwei Söhne. Und er ging zu dem ersten und sprach: Sohn, mache dich auf und arbeite heute in meinem Weinberg! 29 Der aber antwortete und sprach: Ich will nicht! Danach aber reute es ihn, und er ging. 30 Und er ging zu dem zweiten und sagte dasselbe, da antwortete dieser und sprach: Ja, Herr! - und ging nicht.
31 Wer von diesen beiden hat den Willen des Vaters getan? Sie sprachen zu ihm: Der erste.
Da spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, ich sage euch, die Zöllner und die Huren kommen eher ins Reich Gottes als ihr! 32 Denn Johannes ist zu euch gekommen mit dem Weg[a] der Gerechtigkeit, und ihr glaubtet ihm nicht. Die Zöllner und die Huren aber glaubten ihm; und obwohl ihr es saht, reute es euch nicht einmal nachträglich, so daß ihr ihm geglaubt hättet.
Gleichnis von den Weingärtnern
33 Hört ein anderes Gleichnis: Es war ein gewisser Hausherr, der pflanzte einen Weinberg, zog einen Zaun darum, grub eine Kelter darin, baute einen Wachtturm, verpachtete ihn an Weingärtner und reiste ab.[b] 34 Als nun die Zeit der Früchte nahte, sandte er seine Knechte zu den Weingärtnern, um seine Früchte in Empfang zu nehmen. 35 Aber die Weingärtner ergriffen seine Knechte und schlugen den einen, den andern töteten sie, den dritten steinigten sie. 36 Da sandte er wieder andere Knechte, mehr als zuvor; und sie behandelten sie ebenso.
37 Zuletzt sandte er seinen Sohn zu ihnen und sprach: Sie werden sich vor meinem Sohne scheuen. 38 Als aber die Weingärtner den Sohn sahen, sprachen sie untereinander: Das ist der Erbe; kommt, laßt uns ihn töten und sein Erbgut behalten! 39 Und sie nahmen ihn, stießen ihn zum Weinberg hinaus und töteten ihn.
40 Wenn nun der Herr des Weinbergs kommt, was wird er mit diesen Weingärtnern tun? 41 Sie sprachen zu ihm: Er wird die Übeltäter übel[c] umbringen und den Weinberg andern Weingärtnern verpachten, welche ihm die Früchte zu ihrer Zeit[d] abliefern werden.
42 Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Habt ihr noch nie gelesen in der Schrift:
„Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, ist zum Eckstein geworden. Das ist vom Herrn geschehen, und es ist wunderbar in unseren Augen“?
43 Darum sage ich euch: Das Reich Gottes wird von euch genommen und einem Volk gegeben werden, das dessen Früchte bringt. 44 Und wer auf diesen Stein fällt, der wird zerschmettert werden; auf wen er aber fällt, den wird er zermalmen.
45 Und als die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer seine Gleichnisse hörten, merkten sie, daß er von ihnen redete. 46 Und sie suchten ihn zu ergreifen, fürchteten aber die Volksmenge, weil sie ihn für einen Propheten hielt.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,(C) Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
4 This took place to fulfill(D) what was spoken through the prophet:
5 “Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”[a](E)
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks(F) on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet(J) from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Jesus at the Temple(K)
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying(L) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers(M) and the benches of those selling doves.(N) 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e](O) but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[f]”(P)
14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.(Q) 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,”(R) they were indignant.(S)
16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.
“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,
17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany,(U) where he spent the night.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree(V)
18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.(W)
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt,(X) not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for(Y) in prayer.”
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(Z)
23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority(AA) are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”
24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”(AB)
27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’(AC)
29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors(AD) and the prostitutes(AE) are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,(AF) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors(AG) and the prostitutes(AH) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent(AI) and believe him.
The Parable of the Tenants(AJ)
33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted(AK) a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower.(AL) Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.(AM) 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants(AN) to the tenants to collect his fruit.
35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.(AO) 36 Then he sent other servants(AP) to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.(AQ) Come, let’s kill him(AR) and take his inheritance.’(AS) 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”(AT) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,(AU) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?(AV)
43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you(AW) and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”[i](AX)
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.(AY)
