Het verhaal van de arbeiders in de wijngaard
20 Jezus zei: "Daarom kun je het Koninkrijk van God vergelijken met de eigenaar van een wijngaard, die 's morgens vroeg arbeiders voor zijn wijngaard ging huren. 2 Hij sprak met de arbeiders af dat ze voor een hele dag werken één zilverstuk zouden krijgen. Daarna stuurde hij hen naar zijn wijngaard. 3 Rond negen uur ging hij naar buiten. Hij zag dat er nog steeds arbeiders zonder werk op het marktplein stonden te wachten tot iemand hen zou huren. 4 Hij zei tegen hen: 'Ga ook in mijn wijngaard werken. Ik zal jullie er een eerlijk loon voor geven.' Dus gingen zij ook naar de wijngaard. 5 Rond twaalf uur en drie uur ging hij weer naar de markt en deed hetzelfde. 6 Toen hij rond vijf uur naar buiten ging, zag hij nog steeds mensen staan. Hij zei tegen hen: 'Waarom staan jullie hier de hele dag zonder werk?' 7 Ze antwoordden: 'Omdat niemand ons heeft gehuurd.' Hij zei tegen hen: 'Jullie kunnen ook in mijn wijngaard komen werken. Ik zal jullie er een eerlijk loon voor geven.'
8 Toen het avond begon te worden, riep de eigenaar van de wijngaard de opzichter. Hij zei tegen hem: 'Roep de arbeiders en betaal hun loon uit. Begin bij hen die het laatst kwamen, en eindig bij hen die het eerst kwamen.' 9 Zo kwamen de mensen die pas rond vijf uur waren komen werken het eerst. Ze kregen allemaal één zilverstuk. 10 Daarom dachten de mensen die het eerst waren komen werken, dat ze méér zouden krijgen dan zij. Maar ook zij kregen allemaal één zilverstuk. 11 Toen begonnen ze te mopperen tegen de eigenaar. 12 Ze zeiden: 'Die daar hebben maar één uur gewerkt. Toch betaalt u hun net zoveel als ons. Maar wij hebben de héle dag gewerkt, en ook in de hitte.' 13 Maar de eigenaar zei tegen één van hen: 'Vriend, ik ben helemaal niet oneerlijk tegen je. Je was het er van tevoren toch mee eens dat ik je één zilverstuk zou betalen? Neem je loon dus mee en ga naar huis. 14 Ik wil de mensen die het laatste kwamen hetzelfde betalen als jullie. 15 Ik mag met mijn geld toch doen wat ik wil? Of denk jij slecht over mij, omdat ik goed ben?'
16 Zo zullen de mensen die nu het laatst zijn, straks het eerst zijn. En mensen die nu het eerst zijn, zullen straks het laatst zijn. Want er zijn wel veel mensen geroepen, maar er zijn maar weinig mensen toegelaten."
Jezus vertelt opnieuw over zijn dood
17 Jezus ging op weg naar Jeruzalem. Onderweg nam Hij de twaalf leerlingen apart. 18 Hij vertelde hun: "We zijn nu op weg naar Jeruzalem. Daar zal de Mensenzoon gevangen genomen worden door de leiders van de priesters en de wetgeleerden. Ze zullen Hem laten doden. 19 En ze zullen Hem aan de Romeinen uitleveren. Die zullen Hem belachelijk maken, zweepslagen geven en kruisigen. Maar op de derde dag zal Hij opstaan uit de dood en weer levend worden."
Niet heersen, maar dienen
20 De vrouw van Zebedeüs kwam met haar zonen Jakobus en Johannes naar Jezus toe. Ze boog zich voor Hem neer om iets van Hem te vragen. 21 Jezus vroeg haar: "Wat wil je me vragen?" Ze zei: "Wilt U mij beloven dat mijn twee zonen naast U mogen zitten in uw Koninkrijk? De één rechts van U en de ander links van U?" 22 Jezus antwoordde: "Jullie weten niet wat jullie vragen. Kunnen jullie doen wat Ik moet doen? Kunnen jullie doormaken wat Ik moet doormaken?" Ze zeiden tegen Hem: "Dat kunnen we." 23 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Jullie zullen wel hetzelfde doormaken als Ik, maar Ik kan jullie niet beloven dat jullie naast Mij zullen zitten. Mijn Vader bepaalt wie daar mogen zitten."
24 Toen de andere tien leerlingen hoorden wat er was gebeurd, waren ze boos op de twee broers. 25 Maar Jezus riep hen bij Zich. En Hij zei tegen hen: "Jullie weten dat de mensen die over de volken regeren, heersen over de mensen. De mensen in de regeringen gebruiken hun macht. 26 Maar zo moet het bij jullie niet zijn. Als je geëerd wil worden, dien dan de anderen. 27 En als je de belangrijkste wil zijn, doe dan slavenwerk voor de anderen. 28 Want ook de Mensenzoon is niet gekomen om Zich te láten dienen, maar om Zélf te dienen. Hij is gekomen om zijn leven te geven voor de mensen. Zijn leven zal het losgeld zijn waarmee Hij heel veel mensen vrijkoopt."
Jezus geneest twee blinden bij Jericho
29 Toen ze Jericho verlieten, werden ze gevolgd door een grote groep mensen. 30 Langs de kant van de weg zaten twee mannen die blind waren. Ze riepen: "Heer, Zoon van David,[a] help ons alstublieft!" 31 De mensen werden boos en zeiden tegen hen dat ze hun mond moesten houden. Maar toen riepen ze nog harder: "Heer, Zoon van David, help ons alstublieft!" 32 Jezus bleef staan. Hij riep hen en vroeg: "Wat willen jullie dat Ik voor jullie doe?" 33 Ze zeiden tegen Hem: "Heer, maak dat we kunnen zien!" 34 Jezus had medelijden met hen. Hij raakte hun ogen aan. Onmiddellijk konden ze zien en ze volgden Hem.

- Mattheüs 20:30 Vroeger hadden de profeten gezegd dat de Redder van Israël (de 'Messias') een zoon uit de familie van David zou zijn. Daarom noemden deze mannen Hem zo.

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing [a]idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, [b]and whatever is right you will receive.’
8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they [c]complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 (A)Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(E)
17 (F)Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them, 18 (G)“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, 19 (H)and deliver Him to the Gentiles to (I)mock and to (J)scourge and to (K)crucify. And the third day He will (L)rise again.”
Greatness Is Serving(M)
20 (N)Then the mother of (O)Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.
21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine (P)may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink (Q)the cup that I am about to drink, [e]and be baptized with (R)the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to Him, “We are able.”
23 So He said to them, (S)“You will indeed drink My cup, [f]and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
24 (T)And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet (U)it shall not be so among you; but (V)whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 (W)And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— 28 (X)just as the (Y)Son of Man did not come to be served, (Z)but to serve, and (AA)to give His life a ransom (AB)for many.”
Two Blind Men Receive Their Sight(AC)
29 (AD)Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. 30 And behold, (AE)two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, (AF)Son of David!”
31 Then the multitude (AG)warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”
32 So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
33 They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” 34 So Jesus had (AH)compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.
31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.
32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
